Kirstin has been doing whistle notes for years. Usually my girl is in the background making the key changes and bringing the power verse in. She lets others shine but she is the only member of the group to star on Broadway. She didn't even audition for the part, the producers said "We have seen your work, just show up". Lately though she has been in the spotlight more. She wrote or co-wrote more of the new original album than any other member of the group. You can't sleep on any member of the group.
I loved Matt in this video. Actually, I love Matt in all songs that he's been on since joining Pentatonix. They all got to shine in this performance and they were incredible. .
Kirstie burned this one UP!!!!!! Plain and simple..There's vid of her doing whistle notes that only birds can hear lol. PTX is very smart in letting Mitch hit the highs and Kirstin bring the power, it is so very different of an approach it becomes magical. Dude hits soprano girl brings the power. Nice reaction man!
Matt is a different type of bass than Avi. Matt is definitely more of a rhythmic bass- like a bass guitar. However, Avi is about five years older than Matt and typically bass voices don’t fully mature until age 35 or so. Matt fits perfectly into the direction PTX seems to be heading- more pop.
I don't think PTX is moving more in a pop direction. I simply think Matt's considerable talents have opened them up to more opportunities to perform additional genres. His bass lines are beautiful things that provide a stable flooring for the other singers to shine. His bass may be more subtle at times than the former bassist, but in my opinion, it seems more cohesive.
@@southernscribe1272 I respectfully disagree about their direction to pop. Their most recent album is definitely towards pop instead of classic. Also there is Attention, Blinding Lights, Break my heart, new rules, etc etc. I was complimenting him
@@lauriep2018 I didn't take offense at your comments. I was truly just voicing my opinion that the group's latest offerings don't strike me as a calculated move toward pop music, just the result of being able to perform a different type of music due to the new lineup
No believe it was only Matt. Did you notice the looks between Scott Andrew Kirsty before each solo. I believe Scott's vocals get overlooked in their songs.
Kirstin also shines when she was featured as the main vocal in a cover of “Show Yourself” (from Disney’s Frozen 2) with Voctave (an a capella vocal group).
This song is from the superhit Broadway musical (and later movie) Rent. Pentatonix recorded this for their most recent Christmas album. This is the first time they've ever performed it live, and it has basically become the official video for the studio version (which didn't have an official video). Ever since her successful solo album and acclaimed stint on Broadway, Kirstie has finally been stepping out of the shadows and shining like the brightest star in the sky. We always knew she had it in her...but it's still wonderful to see! This was nothing short of a STUNNING performance!!
This song was on their last Christmas CD released last year. This was the first time I have seen this performed by them on any medium. Kirstie was fire on this.
It's interesting how in the Sing Off, the judges were both hard on and admiring of Scott. He loves R&B and he's very much made himself into that kind of lead singer. He's naturally gifted with a phenomenal set of pipes, but the riffs and runs are his own hard work. I think the judges knew he could take it. You might want to look up some of the Sing Off episodes, DTV: see how PTX started and how far they've come. And Kirstin's skills have been blooming like whoa in the past couple of years. Maybe react to Shallow? Lovely work by all of them, but Kirstin really shines (and so does Kevin's cello).
I know this is an older comment but I wanted to agree, I think it's because their background in show choir & community theatre made them excellent at annunciation, so when they sing they're very clear (except for when they deliberately want to muddy it up like when doing a couple in Evolution of Rihanna, because it's her style). On top of that, when you're covering over people's work you want to make absolutely sure you get the lyrics spot on. What was interesting to me was how it's more noticeable with some covers over others...eg when they did Ariane Grande (both PTX and Superfruit), and you realise you've either had no clue what she'd been singing all that time or you'd been singing the wrong lyrics for years lol. But yeah, part of their talent in breathing fresh life into a song is how clearly they convey they words & it just opens the original back up to you for appreciation for how it was written.
I understand your love of Avi - he's still very much my favourite on the tracks that he's on and whenever I'm listening to the older stuff with him on it, I always find myself thinking "goddamn Avi". I think it's really important, though, to mention that Matt is an incredible bass singer in his own right. For a while after joining, there was resistance to liking him as much because Avi has such an amazing voice, both bass and singing, but their newer stuff is where he's really starting to come in to his own and not just be "the guy that replaced Avi". If you haven't already, I highly recommend listening to Attention and Feel It Still from their Top Pop Vol. I album, and you'll realise what Matt really brings to the group. Trust me - love Avi for what he did, but believe Matt is coming for the future and will kill it just as hard.

But why ask if they covered this song with Avi? The answer is no. But the thing is Matt is the new bass and he is who we should be focusing on.

I’ve heard a few people say they’ve never paid attention to the lyrics before. It must be something about Pentatonix that makes us pay attention.
