How To Replace The Battery in a Nexus 6P

  • In this video, I demonstrate how to replace the battery in a Huawei Nexus 6P. Though the phone itself is very capable, the battery is beginning to show its age in many units, so replacement may be required. Please note that damage to the glass on the rear of the unit may occur during removal. If you are concerned about breaking it, replacement glass pieces can be obtained cheaply online.

    This is the best video on how to replace the battery on a Nexus 6P as it shows what happens if you don't get your pick down far enough and remove the screen which is what happened to me. Thanks for the video and great tip on using double sided tape to glue the screen back down.

    Good work man! I followed your video and was able to easily replace my 6Ps battery. Obviously I removed the SIM tray first. But now I have a new battery and new life to my phone. I was at under 50% battery life. Just opening an app would drop my battery by 2-4% and it wouldn't last 5 hours in standby before.

    Thank you for this video. I have had to replace my 6P battery every year since 2018 because the phone will start shutting down when it gets below 40-50% of battery charge. I had previously taken it to a shop that would charge me $70 for this, so this time I had decided to do it myself. Also, I had just successfully replaced my Sony SmartWatch 3 battery, so I felt confident that I could do this. I watched about ten different videos on how to replace the 6P battery the night before. Yours came up on my TH-cam recommendations right before I was going to start so I decided to watch it, too. None of the other videos had mentioned the danger of taking off the display. The panels on the back came off easily and the screws came out with no problems. I was especially cautious not to take off the display because of what you had said and... I pulled up the display. I tried to tamp it back in and concentrated on digging down below the level of the screen to get below the circuit board so I could pry it up. This was especially hard, even harder because of the screen having been pried up. I was finally able to replace the battery, but I could not get the phone to come back on. Or at least I could not get the screen to come back on. I think the phone was on because I got a notice on my watch that I had missed a couple of calls and using my fingerprint reader would result in a little buzz. But otherwise I'm afraid this phone is toast. I have a backup phone so I'll be switching my SIM card to it. And I'll be relying on the shop for this service from now on. I wish they would just make the phones with user-replaceable batteries like they used to.

    Great video, as others mentioned, remove the sim card first. Also, if you're having trouble getting the edge up on the camera glass or the plastic at the bottom, apply more heat. I used a heat gun(obv don't over due it. But experiment in steps) then put a straight razor blade(thin cheap kind) in the crease between the camera glass and frame and push the blade flat to create lift. When you've applied enough heat it comes up quite easily. Once you're under the glass there's no need to keep using the razor blade around the edge, stick the blade in the portion you have up, apply more heat with it wedged, and then go around with a guitar pick or plastic spreader and gradually apply more heat, and keep spreading the edge open with your tool. Just did the replacement without breaking anything and the phones working tops. Also, two suction cups really help to pull the phone from the frame. Use the suction cups to pull on both sides of the bottom corner of the phone, and then stick the pick perpendicular to the screen in to the gap you create. Did not separate the screen from the phone and didnt bend it or break it this way. Once one corner is up you just run the pick around the edge while pulling apart with the suction cups and it comes right out. Also when re assembling you can re-use the old battery tape, and also apply heat to the back of the glass and bottom piece before re installing to re set the glue that was left on both pieces. Seemed to hold well. Thanks for a great vid!

    This is why batteries should be removable. You can still make the phone waterproof. There are phones that have both removable batteries and waterproofing. This is simply built in obsolescence.

    For anyone trying this, be very careful when taking the front out.. I found that nobody really mentioned how careful you need to be. I appears most are taking the screen out but you actually need to dig really deep to get the phone from the back case. If you start lifting any of the glass/screen then stop as you'll most likely break it like I did..
    bye bye 6P..time for a new phone I guess.

    I just replaced the battery in my Nexus 6p.
    My glass panel on the back did crack, but it didn't break.
    I ordered a new glass panel when I ordered the battery, but I didn't want to wait for it to do the battery replacement since my old battery was terrible.
    My glass panel cracked at the bottom of the flash opening but stopped there.
    I just applied more heat using the iOpener and came at the glass from the other side.
    The glass came off ok but it now has a small crack.
    When I get the new glass panel, I'll swap out the old one ASAP.

    Really should have advised caution about using a card to get the battery out. You can only safely stick the card in 1/3 of the way to remove the battery. There is a ribbon cable that apparently goes to the camera. I bent mine using the card technique. That shot changes so quick you don't get to see the ribbon cable underneath. My camera is bricked now and I'm going to have to by a new phone because I bent that cable. Too bad because the new battery is great. Mind the ribbon cable behind the battery if you are going to attempt this.

    The old battery had a flat ribbon connector at top that I didn't see you remove. When you pulled out the battery your hand was covering that connector. The new battery didn't appear to have the same ribbon connector. Is it needed?

    • @Dodoid
      @Dodoid  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The three FPC ribbon cables are for the battery, and USB board (which has two). When I put the new battery in, I plugged in the battery to its connector, then later (at 4:34) plugged in the USB board connector. The old and new batteries also seem to be slightly differently constructed. One has a loop of battery cable over the top, the other has it underneath. I presume this has to do with Huawei changing how they make these (the original battery was original from the very early 6P, the new one was purchased just before the video was released).

    I guarantee everyone that the random shutting down issue will be solved after replacing the battery. You won't get original battery these days easily. So, go for some other company battery.
    Get the 3450 mah battery from Flipkart or Amazon after checking their star rating. It will cost around 9$ to 11$ only. I did that for my 3 year old Google Nexus 6p and now it doesn't shut down until below 1percent battery.
    However, do this yourself by seeing some TH-cam videos on replacing battery diy. No need to find a Google or Huawei service center for as simple thing as changing the battery.
    I love my phone very much now and I play minecraft on it daily.
    This phone is great, no doubt. But other phones too get their battery weakened after 2 to 3 years. So, do not blame your Great Nexus 6p guys.

      My camera isn't too bad, though it only does 1080p30 (it's a DSLR, so video isn't really the priority). I could maybe use a macro lens for small work like what's seen in this video (it would be particularly bad here, since the camera is very zoomed in and grainy because of it).

    • @KnurdMonkey
      @KnurdMonkey 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, that's the reason. Probably it is using a combination of optical and digital zoom. By the way... I like a lot your dumpster diving videos and stuff like that. I'd love to do that... but here in italy it's not so common to find things like that.

    • @Dodoid
      @Dodoid  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, pure optical, but zoomed in way further than that lens is really good for. The camera is also an APSC sensor as opposed to full frame, so not as much light is hitting it and the ISO has to be cranked in order to see anything, hence the grain.
      Dumpster diving is cool, as are garage sales. Expect another garage sale video coming soon, though unfortunately no dumpster diving in that one.

    First, you need a haircut. Second, I really don't feel confident that you know what you're doing considering all of the mistakes you made (however you did acknowledge them). Third. While filming, either the instructions were out of camera shot or your hair was in the way. Fourth. I think I'll pass on using your video for replacing my battery. Have a good day.
