Thank you for mentioning Valdis Story! I love that game. I recommend it to other metroidvania lovers, but with a cautionary message - the combat in the first hour feels a bit clunky. But it's meant to. You have an upgrade tree, and though the combat isn't great at first, it is silky smooth after a few upgrades. I'm sad that the game didn't do great commercially.
I recently purchased the Ori and the will of the wisps. I still have to replay and finish the first game, I still remember playing it on my Xbox one. Good memories

Hey man I just wanted to say thank you. Ever since you first showed me ender lilies quietus of the night I started to play metroidvanias and personally is now my favorite genre. You are my go to guy for all kinds of games. I really appreciate these kind of videos and keep it up with the great work!
I really liked bloodstained as well, it accomplished what it was trying to very well Ender lillies also really surprised me with the quality of world building and combat with a lot of variety
For me, Blasphemous is the perfect gameplay for this style of game. My skill is pretty mediocre, so something like Hollow Knight is the absolute limit of my ability. Nightmare King Grim was just about beatable after much practice, as my reaction time could barely keep up with his moveset. Blasphemous, on the other hand, is much more forgiving in terms of combat speed. It also features both a dodge and parry, which I consider a huge plus in these games. I enjoyed exploring Bloodstained, but the gameplay was mediocre at best. It feels very dated.

Montezuma's Revenge, Pitfall 2, Battle For Olympus, Rygar, Strider, Clash At Demonhead, Dark Castle, Wonder Boy III, The Goonies II. Obviously All of the Metroid and Castlevanias lol 2009: Shadow Complex 2010: Hmmm nothing really came out this year lol 2011: Cave Story+ (This one really kicked off the trend) 2012: Dust: An Elysian Tail 2013: Guacamelee! 2014: Strider 2015: Ori and the Blind Forest (I have never got around to Axiom Verge 1 or 2 yet) 2016: Owlboy 2017: Hollow Knight (but an honorable mention to: Rain World, Steamworld Dig 2 and The Mummy Demastered) 2018: The Messenger (But I just picked up Yoku thanks to your rec, Clemmy!) 2019: Blasphemous 2020: Vigil: The Longest Night 2021: Death’s Gambit: Afterlife 2022: Still deciding. I've barely touched my back catalog of Metroidvanias from last year.

The fact that ori has been developed on a toxic environment doesn't change the fact that it is by far the best metroidvania of 2019 and arguably 2015. The genre got so famous mainly thanks to ori and hk: they're both masterpieces but for very different reasons.
You might be right to put ori on the list, but is it ok to put a game on a pedestal when it got their on the backs of people that suffered. Many would jump on him for putting it on the list when it was developed in a toxic environment and would think he doesn't care or even supports that behavior because he put the game on his list.

You have cases where The Last of Us 2 won the most awards in spite of harassment going on within the studio. For me allegations are just that, allegations. I'd like to see legal action taken against them if true. Prove they exist and the severity. Anybody can make allegations on Twitter with little to no recourse
I'm really interested to try Ender Lillies, dear god Hollow Knight was my favorite, among these on the list. It's simple a MASTERPIECE, i call it as "Soulsvania" and Indie of the Indies 8D But where's Salt and Sanctuary and Lost Faith? Gotta play both still, also Momodora (i played Minoria, same Brazilian studio) and Bloodstained
My opinion is very unpopular, but I don't see Bloodstained as a masterpiece of a game they say it is. It's a very good game, but hasn't accomplished anything beyond that, and Igarashi has made much better games before. Blasphemous was definitely the best metroidvania in 2019 for me, and has mastered aspects about design, exploration, combat and boss battles with much more greatness.

in 2021 I would recommend GRIME, it is more skill based and it doesn't matter if you have all the upgrades, It will still give you a hard time if you don't know how to parry.

I'm actually playing through Infernax again with my fiance since they added the co-op DLC. Loved that game and all the different endings and secrets you could get. Also have to say 2019 was a tough choice, but I have to agree with your pick of Bloodstained instead of Blasphemous- BS was a bit more fun for me as opposed to Blasphemous had me raging more 😅 Great list!!!
WOW AT LAST YOU NOTICED VALDIS STORY: ABYSSAL CITY 0:11! This game is way better than Hollow Knight! It did not sell a lot but man this one revolutionized the entire metroidvania genre. I am wondering up to this day if Endless Fluff Games is planning to make a new sequel! This game should be your Metroidvania of the decade 2010's not by popularity and vote but by design, story, game play and concept not Hollow Knight that is way overrated and got many paid reviews just to make its status soar high! Valdis Story did not get the recognition it should have gotten since 2013. Low sales, unpopular and almost obscure, a game that is so great that this is undoubtedly a hidden gem. You said it best indie games 0:47 "and still worth the look, 10 years later".

Aeterna Noctis F.I.S.T. Environmental Station Alpha Metroid Dread are a few I'd say are better than at least half the games on this list still I agree everything named was at least good
I'm sure I must be missing something, but Hollow Knight just never stuck with me. Maybe I'll get it on my next try, but as of now, it just doesn't really grab me.
I know how it is, i tried 2 times and gave up, then in the 3 time, i decided to push foward, the game improves alot after you get the dash and double jump.
Dead cells is another faster paced CV-like along with rogue legacy that's quite good, still ori is well worth the play, it's one of the best one's I've played.
I fully agree that Hollow Knight should be 2017 Metroidvania of the year but not metroidvania of the decade 2010's. I did not fell in love with this metrdoivania but man this is a good game. I give this 7 Stars Out Of 10! There are many bad game design choices from the indie developers. There too many to say so I will skip that part. What I really like about this game is the amount of exploration, back tracking and secret places where at one, you need a charm and mostly just destroy flimsy walls to get to the other side. Bossess are hard and some are annoying but that is the challenge. Lots of DLCs to keep you hooked BUT IT IS NOT A MASTERPIECE! I have a feeling that many of its reviews to make it look like a masterpiece are paid reviews. I am awaiting for the release of its sequel Hollow Knight: Silk Song. I hope it releases this February of 2024. Better gloomy graphics, brighter lighting and effects, I hope the music is better and sound effects and Hornet controls much faster than Hollow Knight.

Bloodstain is an excellent choice on this list. I see a lot of people diss you for choosing it over blasphemous but I don't really think when they chose blasphemous, they're enjoying it as a soullike than a metroidvania game. If it was a soulslike list, I would agree with them but this is not.
Personally, I think Blasphemous just a better game. Too much of Bloodstained is just busywork grinding, farming random crap from mobs. Typical for Japanese games, but I prefer a well-paced experience to spending 20 hours collecting miscellaneous junk from mobs.

To me , Bloodstain embrace the legacy of the past castlevania : have fuck ton of skill , weapon category , have huge map to explore , can be OP later on , simple plot which we can follow and relate . People complain about metroidvania game need to be more difficult , more impactful plot , need to be darker , be more like dark souls , but it was the other way around , dark souls series took inspiration from metroidvania , just look at how much interconnected all of the map is in darksouls . I think Bloodstain is excellent game on it own , when i want to find a friendly casual , easy to play game , i would choose Bloodstain , when i want to get buttfucked , challenging game with deep plot , i would return to Bloodborne hahaha

Blasphemous is #2 on my favourite 2D metroidvania list. Even thought the morbid setting isn't to my taste, the overall game is just exceptional.

I stand by Salt & Sanctuary.
I'm sure I must be missing something, but Hollow Knight just never stuck with me. Maybe I'll get it on my next try, but as of now, it just doesn't really grab me.
I know how it is, i tried 2 times and gave up, then in the 3 time, i decided to push foward, the game improves alot after you get the dash and double jump.

Yeah, the pacing of the early game is definitely the biggest weak point. Especially considering how easy it is to go in a different direction.

Dead cells is another faster paced CV-like along with rogue legacy that's quite good, still ori is well worth the play, it's one of the best one's I've played.

I fully agree that Hollow Knight should be 2017 Metroidvania of the year but not metroidvania of the decade 2010's. I did not fell in love with this metrdoivania but man this is a good game. I give this 7 Stars Out Of 10! There are many bad game design choices from the indie developers. There too many to say so I will skip that part. What I really like about this game is the amount of exploration, back tracking and secret places where at one, you need a charm and mostly just destroy flimsy walls to get to the other side. Bossess are hard and some are annoying but that is the challenge. Lots of DLCs to keep you hooked BUT IT IS NOT A MASTERPIECE! I have a feeling that many of its reviews to make it look like a masterpiece are paid reviews. I am awaiting for the release of its sequel Hollow Knight: Silk Song. I hope it releases this February of 2024. Better gloomy graphics, brighter lighting and effects, I hope the music is better and sound effects and Hornet controls much faster than Hollow Knight.

Bloodstain is an excellent choice on this list. I see a lot of people diss you for choosing it over blasphemous but I don't really think when they chose blasphemous, they're enjoying it as a soullike than a metroidvania game. If it was a soulslike list, I would agree with them but this is not.
Personally, I think Blasphemous just a better game. Too much of Bloodstained is just busywork grinding, farming random crap from mobs. Typical for Japanese games, but I prefer a well-paced experience to spending 20 hours collecting miscellaneous junk from mobs.
@@LSB001 That's what i'm talking about , all the thing you said is soulslike , and blasphemous is well crafted in it too . To me , Bloodstain embrace the legacy of the past castlevania : have fuck ton of skill , weapon category , have huge map to explore , can be OP later on , simple plot which we can follow and relate . People complain about metroidvania game need to be more difficult , more impactful plot , need to be darker , be more like dark souls , but it was the other way around , dark souls series took inspiration from metroidvania , just look at how much interconnected all of the map is in darksouls . I think Bloodstain is excellent game on it own , when i want to find a friendly casual , easy to play game , i would choose Bloodstain , when i want to get buttfucked , challenging game with deep plot , i would return to Bloodborne hahaha

The only thing I said is that it was better paced.
Bloodstained is full of typical JRPG grinding that adds nothing to the game, and is there purely for padding.
