"What is Lulu" should be restated, "Lulu is a print-on-demand company." At the very minimum, Lulu will print your book and nothing else.They offer numerous other services, however, if you want to pay more. But the fundamental price is for that first book. I've had about twenty books printed at Lulu, and in every case, I have done EVERYTHING required: completely formatted text, submitted in PDF; cover design, also in PDF; and ISBN, which I purchase elsewhere. I am shown in my books as my own publisher, and "Lulu" is nowhere printed in the book. And while they do require I purchase a proof copy, it's cheap. Some of mine cost only about $7.00. The advantage of that, of course, is that you get to spot any errors and make a revision before going public. Compare to publishers, who charge you up front hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Thanks for this breakdown, very helpful. One thing I was wondering, do you know if you can bundle a PDF with the Print book via Lulu? To answer your last question, I printed a hardcover book (premium colour) with Lulu and the quality was excellent. Yes they're a bit more expensive than some competitors (like DTRPG) but the quality is there imo.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I have used Lulu for many years and have a few clients in my group coaching who are doing advanced testing of paperback books through Lulu, Amazon and IngramSpark to see what works best.
Thank you. a question: using my ISBN can I self-publish my colouring books (not as global distribution) through Lulu and take the same book as series on KDP? similarly game with Ingram?basically having a book and selling it myself on different platforms? Is it simply a little change of format but keeping the same IBN, right?

Public Domain Novel can be sold on Lulu?
Hi, thank you so much for this update. I looked at some of these very items you mentioned before I chose to go with Lulu. I wanted to know how I can get a proof copy without publishing the book first. I think I know, but I am so unsure right now. I think that I would go through the normal process of putting in the metadata, and uploading the files, but in the "Select a Goal" section, I would choose "Print your Book" where I can upload the book to my Lulu account instead of selecting "Publish your Book", I was burned after having made the wrong color choice and I hit publish and then couldn't change things when something went wrong with the printing. Then if everything looks good, I can go back in, change the information to "Publish Your Book", review and then confirm and publish. Is my thinking correct? Please advise., thank you.
Hi, great question! I haven't ever seen a way to get a proof before going to the final step. Though, it is usually possible to make changes if you see an issue. For Lulu they require you to order a proof before you can even publish the book. So, that is already in place and they understand that mistakes can be made. So, I think they have you covered on this issue already unless I am misunderstanding. Have you checked out my checklist in the description? It breaks things down a bit as well.

How do you distribute a book onto all platforms with the same ISBN?

Thanks for your questions Justin! You can purchase an ISBN directly or just register your book under someone else's imprint. It doesn't change ownership of the book or anything. So, you have 100% control over your book whichever route you choose and don't even need to mention who it is registered under. Next, an ISBN will work for the same book given it has the same metadata, page count and type of book. That's it. Then, you can use that same ISBN on all platforms. Though, if you change any of these 3 things, that will require a new ISBN.
If I publish with Lulu, can I still submit my manuscript to a Traditional Publishing Company, specifically a University Publishing Press? If known, would Traditional Publishing Companies frown or turn down the manuscript if they know you have self published elsewhere due to possible breach of contract agreements? Trying to see the pros & cons from both Self Publish vs Traditional & perhaps the possibility of publishing with both. TIA. 😊😊
Yes, you can pursue the traditional publishing route even after self-publishing. And it's not all that rare of a process, either.

@@SelfPublishingMadeEasyNow Hi Thanks I wish they had a customer service phone number where I could speak to a Human. I wrote a book in 2010 took it off the market in 2012. The ghost writter had access to getting on there and hes no where to be found. I want to re list the book.
If you have had your amazon kdp account terminated would u still be aloud to publish thru lulu onto amazon? Amazon sent me an email saying i contacted them about a status review termination but i had never contacted them, then they sent me an email saying my kdp was still accessible but when i checked it was not and was truly terminated. The whole thing is a mess of a system over at KDP with system glitches and bot programs. So im trying to transition too Lulu after having a computer glitch disaster at amazon kdp
Hi Liny, I am so sorry to hear about your challenges with Amazon. I personally prefer IngramSpark as my second pick and then Lulu for hardcovers. Great question! It is more expensive with Lulu, but they do have a huge distribution network. So, definitely worth checking out!
I wrote my own life story/experiences that I want to publish (like 20 copies, that's it). I don't mind spending a little bit of money because this is just intended to be a gift for my family members only. Can Lulu do this or is there a better option out there.???

How long does a 'pending' title take to be prepared? I uploaded a doc x file so it would be easy to manage. When i downloaded their pre print ebook all pictures had been replaced by place holders. What's the deal with the process?

I had a couple of books on there back in 2010, and I had marked them as free. Somehow they still made a small amount of money. A little over 10 bucks I think. They wanted to send the money but before they could do that, they wanted all my tax information. I wasn't comfortable with that at the time, so I told them to keep the money. They said they couldn't do that. So I said I would make a purchase using that money, and they said they couldn't do that either. They still wanted my tax info. I deleted my account and thought that would be the end of it. They sent me emails for 10 years bugging me for the tax info. 😢 I wondered how much time and energy they wasted, but promised myself I would never use them again.
Hi John, why not just send them tax info. I have been in this loop with FindAway voices as well. Though, usually they have a solution if you talk with them and ask them what info they need and just work through the process. Let me know if you need help.

Great question! It depends upon what choices you make when placing your order. I haven't tested out all of their different options. So, I can't say which is best. Have you published your first book?

My writing is too valuable to be published. I only want my books printed. I have been looking for several years and cannot find a short run for under 30 years' wages.

Very good idea to publish your books wide. No reason not to put them on Ingram Spark in addition to Amazon.
There are so many negative reviews.
Lulu is a ripoff. They take 50% off the top just in printing fees.
The printing fees can be compensated by just raising your price. Then, it is important to look at markets Lulu hits that no one else hits. That always has to be considered when looking at any platform. Though, I would never start with Lulu as my starting platform.

You're complaining about them charging for printing? Your statement doesn't make sense. So many of you have no idea what you're talking about. Printing is comparable to Ingram.
