This is an unpopular opinion, but I actually prefer the newer generation. The brawls with no finish actually irritates me. I prefer someone to just get plainly outboxed for 12 rounds than brawling for 12 rounds with no finish.

Those two divisions are the welterweights of old in terms of size, in terms of caliber of fighter yea nobody today compares but we still got a lot of really good fighters at 135 and 140 today, actually the best today are at that weight (besides naoya Inoue and canelo which are both either way above or below that weight)

Majority of fighters in the past took risks and fought the best for pride, glory, legacy...which gave great iconic fights.
Today, cherry picking easy opponents has gone up through the roof which is why we rarely see great fights anymore. It's more about the benjamins than it is about legacy.

I can't think of any other fight like this. Duran had already etched his name in the history books with his work at lightweight and Leonard was the flashy undefeated Olympic gold medalist. Both of these men went on to become top 5 ATGs, and we have the privilege to watch them fight in their primes, with no asterisks surrounding the match regarding weight problems, gloves, ring size etc. Just 15 rounds of fury.

Destroyed by Hagler in "3" rds also 2 other WARRIORS Hearns could never intimidate.... Also Roberto Duran defeating the 1976 "Gold Medalist" Sugar Ray Leonard was much "BIGGER" fight Than Hears vs Leonard. Duran was older than Leonard... Also smaller being originally a natural lightweight moving up two Division two Welterweight "CHALLENGING" a much faster, bigger, stronger and Highly Regarded "Sugar" Ray Leonard. Also Roberto "Manos De Piedra" Duran fought "FEARLESSLY" Two other "GLADIATORS" Who "KNOCKED" Tommy Hearns "OUT" in Only 3 rounds.... These two Legendary Warriors were Iran " The Blade" Barkley.... And "Marvelous" Marven Hagler Two of Boxings "ÉLITE"!!!!!....Duran defeated Barkley another younger bigger and stronger Champion. And Duran also fought Valiantly "against" another bigger stronger Champion in Healer and lost (Duran fought his heart out!!!!! "Valiantly" & "Fearlessly") a decision in 15 rounds something Hearns was Unable to do. Much Respect too Tommy "The Hit Man" Hearns for thus, he is also One of Boxings "SUPER ÉLITE" Who just like Duran was not afraid too fight anyone!!!!!
However, Out of the following "Greats" I just have mentioned....."Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran" found away too "BEAT THE ODDS" Many times being at a disadvantage when he Challenged the other "Boxing Elites" this is why Duran is among the "LEGENDARY HALL OF FAME BOXING CHAMPIONS ÉLITE"...... I promised my brother I would invite him to this fight thinking it would be held at Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas (we live in Calif. 1 hr away by plane). Went to buy tickets and found out it was going to be held in Montreal, Canada - WTF!!! I bought 4 very expensive front row tickets and when we got to Chicago we missed our connecting flight and they said there's no way we can make it now. Tried to charter a single engine or twin engine plane and they said no way you'll get there on time unless u charter a lear jet, so we did. We had 4 front row tickets and there was NO WAY we were going to miss that fight. Turned out to be EXTREMELY expensive but since we were Roberto Duran's fans it was worth every penny. Duran was one of the greatest fighters of all time, if you look at it. If you look at the history, you will see that he simply did not get the recognition that he deserved. He was truly an underrated fighter, probably because he was not American, and the media especially focused more on the American Fighters back then. Also because, since he was not American, then the media wanted everybody in the United States to remember him as the No Mas fighter. Since I was a kid, I admit that I was one of the ones who saw him that way for a long time, until I educated myself about him and found out how many fights he had which was a lot and also reviewing his career. He fought some of the best fighters of the time, always went the distance and never really got hurt, even when he lost. Te saludo, manos de piedra!

But he went after the big money and moved up.Many boxing analysts consider Duran the best in fighter ever. He was so skilled in areas regular fans don’t recognize. The only fight I paid to see. Duran was feinting beautifully here. This is a master class in street fighting mixed with some VERY savvy and effective inside game.
Duran at 29 here still had that mongoose split second timing
    that made him so effective.
For this fight Duran was in SPARTAN condition against one of the best fighters this United States has produced in Ray Leonard. Duran is the ONLY man to defeat Leonard at his absolute prime.
Duran when DISCIPLINED and focused, was truly a marvel of aggression, boxing , subtle defense, killer instinct and heavy, punishing hitting. A natural born, fearless fighter.
His classic third fight with Estaban Dejesus was a clinic in disciplined agression and
    Counter punching.
As he aged and moved up in weight, the speed was not quite the same and his punches though hurtful, did not ROCK the bigger fighters such as Hagler, Robbie Simms, Iran Barkley (though he did drop Barkley)and several others. What did remain constant was his fearlessness, heart and ring smarts accumulated over 80 something fights.
I see this same fighting spirit in Manny Pacquiao today.
Win,lose or draw ,real fighters with the street in them on many levels.
Much respect to Hands of Stone, Manos de piedras!

Duran is everything they say he is and more. He’s the greatest lightweight ever. He’s a top 20 welterweight. Aside from Ali, Duran''s the best fighter of the 70s. He’s one of the best underdog fighters ever. He has 3 of the best performances I have ever witnessed vs Ray Leonard, Carlos Palomino and Hector Thompson. He’s one of the best defensive fighters ever. He’s the best defensive fighter I have ever seen in an AGGRESSIVE FIGHTER. He’s one of the best infighters ever. He’s one of the best counter punchers ever. He’s one of the strongest fighters ever for his size. He has a great chin. He’s a great puncher. He’s the best Latino fighter ever.
