There's no difference in performance on laptop vs battery. What likely happened was, when you first load up your machine, it does an index of Spotlight which takes a solid hour to complete and tanks your performance. You should get 15 minute export all the time, even on battery now that it's done.
Appreciate you pointing that out (gently), Jay. I kinda botched that part of the vid in rushing to a conclusion about why the export times would change so drastically. Didn't even think about Spotlight doing its indexing thing right after setting the computer up. Ugh. Makes me wish TH-cam would let you update a video... 😬
Congratulations. Love the smell of new hardware in the morning. My is apparently being ordered by my employer, likely to still take a month to get here. In the mean time I have gone from Magic Mouse to Magic Trackpad, as I promised. I certainly hope you are proud of yourself!
It amazes me how long it takes to get computers through employers. My wife's situation is the same. And congrats on the Magic Trackpad! Were you able to enable three-finger drag in Sys Prefs and, if so, how do you like it?
Very interesting as I’m also still editing on the 2013 MacPro trash can, getting stuff cut and out as quick as possible is an issue with increasing demands from clients. So looking forward to 2022 and new Macs
I mean, we all know who's gonna win...but by how much? At first I was a little underwhelmed by the export speeds but then I realize I made one crucial mistake... How much faster are your new MacBook Pros compared to your old Macs? In thinking about why today’s video exported so much faster than my last video: it’s possible the software I used to get the October Apple Event video from TH-cam created an incredibly resource intensive video file. I used a different app to create the Apple Event vids for *this* video, and I have a feeling the video files it created were not as resource intensive to export. 🤔
You really need to upgrade your CPU on your Mac Pro to 12 Cores - Its pretty easy to do and the CPU only costs arounds $120AUD I would love see how the Mac Pro Trash Can after the upgrade compares to the M1 - I think you will be surprised. I have 3 Mac Pro Trash Cans all with 12 Cores now since I updated all of them. They have 64 gigs Ram and D700 GPU. You Mac Pro Trash Can will be reborn again. Again would love to see another video when your Mac Pro is upgraded ^_^
@@GameRelated I’ve been looking to update my trash can Mac Pro because my issue is the apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter doesn’t charge my external SSD drive. How are you making it happen?
I have had my MacBook Pro M1 (w/16GB) for about a year, and it surprises me every time I use it, the battery life is just crazy! I too have a Late 2013 Mac Pro ( different config than yours; 6 core, Dual D500, 32GB - it is a proxmox server running several VMs).
Wow... I'm feeling pressure to upgrade from my 2013 MacPro now that I see these fast results. Thanks for this video, Matthew, especially the inserted section about plugging in! Who. Knew!
Well, I think I’m wrong about plugging in, actually. I think the culprit was an oddly encoded video made from converting Apple’s TH-cam video for the event into something I could use in my edit. The file was very resource intensive and it was causing export times on the laptop to double. Thinking about doing a follow-up vid to clarify the mistake. Thanks for watching! These computers are faaaaaaaast. 🏁
@@matthewTobrien I really hope they make a pro machine that's not completely out of reach for professionals who don't work at Disney. If they maintain the same price point as the Intel Mac Pros, I'll just stick with iMac. Heck, those new baby M1 iMacs surely blow my fully-loaded 2019 model out of the water! Anyway, congrats on the new MacBook!
i edit on a desktop 🖥 .. and u don’t know how much i’m craving fr this laptop. the convenience of taking it mobile with me will be so much helpful as a creator who travels and often comes in situations where i need to move to a different place … dream dream dream .. i even dream of this macbook 💻 now
You've got that right, Rivu. Being able to take such a portable machine with you everywhere is incredible. I'm using mine right now, and I'll be out and about in Omaha today working on a lot of scripting and writing, and I couldn't be happier to have this M1 Pro 14" MacBook Pro.
I have a 2013 Mac Pro 2tb, 128gb ram, D700 graphics and my 2020 MacMiniM1 kicks ITS ASS on MOST projects! So when the M1pro/max MacMini comes out I will sell my 2013 Mac Pro on eBay. No laptops for me as I do not like working on one (albeit I could use it just as a computer without the keyboard and display).
The big boy Mac Pro! If they do drop a Mac mini Pro it's going to be very tempting to me (especially if it can output to 4 monitors and still have some ports left over). I think I'm going to just hang on to my Mac Pro out of nostalgia and feeling like it could be a good computer if I'm ever in a position to hire someone to start helping with the channel.
Reaaaaaaaally chuffed for you - when you said over 3 hours I was fingers crossed for an hour, so when you said 35 mins I was like 'Wooooo!' That's game changing right there, I've been there with the whole 'overnight-delay-disappointment' and then BOOM M1! Though I'm very curious you felt the battery was the decider in the performance difference later, as Apple specifically shouted out in their presentation performance doesn't dip on battery vs plugged in (and then compared it to PC laptops that do throttle on battery). I've read MacBooks only throttle at 5% battery, so I wonder if it was that the project had had time to render, warm up or sip coffee :p Either way, super stoked to see how this unleashes you from here! I was stoked just seeing how fast FCP could open when I had my M1 MBA. Plus, your hair was on point today ;)
I thought the same thing, but I don’t know what other differences there could have been. Same 4K footage, same snippets from past Apple Events, didn’t background render it at all, didn’t export from a different drive… Gonna have to keep scratching my head on that one. 🤷🏻♂️

UPDATE: I just noticed that on footage that I was working on prior to the 10.6 update the stabilization appears in the clips but in the new footage (shot with a Sony ZV-E10) after the update, I do not get that option in the inspector.
Another option is to contact Apple's support team that's dedicated to Pro Apps like Final Cut Pro. IN the US the number is 1-800-MY-APPLE and you can let them know you did the 10.6 update to get free support. Keep in mind they may run you through a lot of the troubleshooting steps from the article I linked to in my reply to your other comment. Let me know how this resolves!
Great video. Similarly I am running a 2013 Mac Pro 6-core with the dual AMD fire Pro GPUS for work. I was also using the 2013 MacBook Pro fully loaded in the field. I too have been having similar results with those machines. And while I obviously haven't used the new M1 Pro/Max, I can say that I'm getting really fast results with the fully loaded 13in MBP with 2 tb ssd. I couldn't really edit Fuji log files on my Mac Pro, but with the M1 it flies. After Effects was a no go for me on the 15 inch. Apple is really killing it with these new machines, it's quite astounding. Thanks for this video!
You're welcome, Corwin, and I couldn't agree more. I thought we hit the ceiling with computer power, but leave it to Apple to blow by it and get everyone really excited about the Mac - possibly more than ever before. I still can't believe how fast EVERYTHING is on this computer. I got back on my Mac Pro this morning and it just felt sluggish.
Hint: Setup a NAS with Time Machine Capability (TrueNAS, Open Media Vault, etc) and you will be able to do hourly local network backups and then, when you change ur macbook, you will be able to restore it via network.
I made this same jump 2013 15" to a M1 cuz it started to die. Just a few months apart from the 14". This looks amazing. Great video. Great story. Enjoyed the whole thing.
Oh wow, thanks so much, Lucas! The 14" was well worth the wait, and I'm especially glad I held on to my 2013 15" Retina MacBook Pro for a few extra years before splurging on a new laptop. Thanks for watching!
Hi. I am not very good with computers but a friend wants to give me a macbook pro late 2013. It has been reset with mac Os big sur installed. Please can I use a final cut pro smoothly on this? Kindly reply. Thank You so much
You can! As long as you transcode any resource-intensive footage to proxy or optimized media. If you're editing 1080p or 4K H.264 or H.265 footage (most commonly used in mirrorless and DSLR cameras) you will most likely need to make lower res proxies. Maybe 720p in ProRes 422LT. This may take up slightly more space than the original media, but it'll allow for editing on your MacBook Pro. Export times are going to be long, but it can be done!
I'm going to make a somewhat uneducated response.... Metal. No matter what, our older Mac Pros are going to continue to struggle as footage gets more robust (10-bit 4-2-2 H.264). But I know next to nothing about the inner workings of Premiere to have any idea if open cl or metal are better for the application.
+matthew O'Brien How does it fair against a mac pro with comparable stats? Your mac pro has a quad-core processor however, The M1 in the 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at an 8-core CPU. If you have the 8-core processor in the mac pro Trash can, it will render faster, so would it still be that much of a difference?
Well, it was really just a fun exercise. Not meant to be a 1:1 comparison but to really help out current 2013 Mac Pro owners who are maybe hesitant to move on from that computer and jump into an M1 Mac mini or MacBook Pro.
Now that the Mac Pros go for ~$300. Do you recommend it for a daily use desktop computer for regular tasks like Safari, Microsoft Office, maybe light photoshop etc?
I do think it's a viable option, but my biggest hangup is that it doesn't support macOS beyond Monterey (I believe). I really like to try to stay current with Apple's software updates as much as possible so it's not a good fit for me, but if that isn't a priority for you the Mac Pro is more than enough power to handle basic day-to-day operations.
Haha - hoping it helps to make two per week. One regular and one Short. If I had to use the Mac Pro today instead of the new MacBook Pro today’s vid would have had to wait until tomorrow. 👎🏻
A question, do you think there's a Final Cut Pro / MacOS release where the Mac Pro 2013 works better or faster? Let's say some software update that a certain point made worst the support for the dual D300/500/700s?
I was happy for a many years with my hackintosh with i7 3770k, 32Gb ram and RX580... until one day after an update it started to be unstable... Wanted to try M1 so I grabbed a second hand M1 mac mini 8/256 to work on, while it is very good for some stuff, it really lacks raw power and ram for some others. So now i'm updating to a base Mac Studio... That should do the job 🙂
Yeah, I was never tempted to do a Hacktinosh. For me my work stuff was too high stakes to rely on something that could have potential issues. If my system went down when I had work on a deadline, I'd be in big trouble.
@@matthewTobrienmy hackintosh run perfect for 8 years. I know 2 professional editors working on hackintosh. It's not less stable than mac's, The problem are that updates are sometimes a pain
That's good to know. And I'd rather pay for the real thing to avoid any pain - if even basic OS updates are problematic, that's a non-starter for me. Even if it means saving a few thousand dollars. To me, because these machines are directly connected to my revenue, I'm accepting of the investment that they are because of the ROI I get. Not dogging Hacktinosh users - just not worth it for me to jump through those hoops to save that money. Plus the anxiety I'd have - even if unfounded - wouldn't be worth it for me personally. Glad it's worked out for you though!
@@matthewTobrien since apple silicone came out, hackintosh has lost a lot of interest for me. It used to be great for me to have just one machine that's a great Mac and a great PC !
Not sure if I’ll get one. I *_want_* one, but I’m sure it’s gonna start around $5k USD and I’m not sure it’s worth it when my Mac Studio handles everything perfectly. 🤷🏻♂️
@@matthewTobrien thanks, I was really interested you had a base Max. were you not tempted by the Ultra? im interested what the technical reasons for your choosing the Max were given you do big, intensive video work. did u do a video on this...?
This was helpful. So you got the base model other than upgraded ram and ssd? My 2018 Mac Pro sadly isn’t working anymore and I forgot to renew my apple care, so now I’m in the market. As usual good stuff.
I knew that if I went with the 16" I'd end up going with 64GB of unified memory and an upgraded M1 Max... I knew from early tests that the fully loaded 16" was only seeing about 2 mins of faster render time for 15 mins of H.264 4K 10-bit footage. Figured since this won't be my main machine I didn't need to spend the extra money. If I only used a laptop, though, I would have snagged the 16".
@@matthewTobrien First I thought I would go for the Max, but noticed the Max consumes more power and generates somewhat more heat, even if the extra cores are idling, without using the special performance-mode, or even when at the Pro-chip not all cores are exhausted to the 100%. I think, it could be the double memory bandwidth of the Max that consumes significantly more energy, no matter what tasks are running.
Well, and for me the faster export times with the M1 Max were just not earth shattering enough to make me pony up the extra dough to get it. I think it jumps up quickly with the M1 Pro Max because you have to start with 32GB of unified memory vs. 16GB. And then why not just make the jump to 64GB at that point? Ch-ching! Saving the major horsepower for a new Mac Pro although I have a feeling I'm going to get a "lower" configuration since my 4K workflow just isn't demanding enough to warrant spending what will most likely be over $10k for something that can play back "30 streams of 8K ProRes RAW simultaneously"... Not sure I need that kind of power. Mostly I just need all the dang ports!
Your New Mac Book Pro is the M1Pro why did you not go for the M1MAX The Max having more support for H264 and ProRes codecs, and with Processor specific to that your time could be even faster? or was it more of a 14 or 16-inch issue?
It really came down to the two things I explain in the video: 1. Cost. I don't really want to spend too much on a new laptop knowing I'm going to most likely buy a Mac Pro when one comes out. 2. Since the laptop won't be my daily driver, I didn't need to spend an extra $1k+ USD to be able to export a vid MAYBE 2 mins faster? Just wasn't worth it. And I chose 14" because of cost and because once I get a new Mac Pro I'll be using the laptop primarily for some remote editing but mostly for productivity, writing, project management, and data management on set for any client work I might have.
@@matthewTobrien Great notes, thanks for the thoughts and tips. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next. Hopefully, FCP will give us something worth holding onto the FCP system not jumping ship... But as you say they need to give us something MORE than just under the hood.
Is editing on the desktop smoother than on the MacBook 💻? How is the MacBooks timeline performance? Wondering why you only choose to export on the laptop.
It is not smoother on my desktop (the Mac Pro). It's still responsive, and I don't struggle with playback, etc. Biggest issue right now is the audio waveforms take FOREVER to redraw after a zoom or blade (an issue that came up on older Mac with the FCP 10.6 update). The MacBook Pro's timeline performance is INSANE. I export on the laptop because what takes 3 hrs on my Mac Pro only takes 15-30 minutes on my MacBook Pro. It's often the difference between whether or not a video gets posted the same day vs the next day. Thanks for watching!
Got the 16" M1 Max version, way over powered for my usage, but hoping longevity of ram and apple silicon lasts longer than my older 128Gb i5 2016 MacBook Pro I want to keep this thing for a long time!
What kind of data transfer cable did you use for your data transfer? I have an old 2013 MacBook Pro and it is taking forever to migrate the data wirelessly.
I used a Thunderbolt cable with Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. Wireless transfer is nice in theory, but any large amount of data takes FOREVER to transfer.
Hi Matthew, Thanks for making these videos. Today I was comparing the export on my Macbook Pro 14" M1 Pro vs my Macbook Pro 13" Intel i7. It looks like the export on the Intel version is faster than on the M1, which is quite surprising to me. Have you done any tests in this area and what are your findings?
That definitely seems strange. But there are also so many variables that go into a head to head competition - after posting this video someone told me that most likely the issue was that my new M1 Pro was indexing while I did my export tests and that's why it was taking so long to export. Have you tried any other tests with the two notebooks and gotten more expected results?
I think it's juuuuust fine. I'm also trying to use my iPad mini with the new Sidecar app in iOS so I can put the Browser window on my iPad while I edit - that allows me to make the Preview window larger and helps me even more with my laptop editing. Unfortunately the Sidecar app freeze frequently when I'm using it with FCP. Hope I can figure it out...
Hi Matthew, this insanely embarrassing to ask but what the heck happened to Stabilization in Final Cut Pro 10.6. I upgraded to this latest version and when I needed to use stabilization in the inspector, it is not there. It does show the new Object Tracking along with all the other normal effects. I tried using the help feature in FCPX but it's outdated and no info on this issue on TH-cam or Google search. I hope your answer doesn't make me feel more of a doofus than I already feel. Thank you in advance for any input that may help with this.
I've started to, by default, follow these Final Cut Pro troubleshooting steps Apple lays out. support.apple.com/en-us/HT203477 Now, not all of them apply to every issue, but they're a good reminder of things we might often overlook when facing an issue. I can't tell you how many times just doing a restart fixes my issue. Oh that they were all that simple. The one that's most often overlooked is creating a temporary user account on your computer to see if the issue happens there. This determines if something is user-specific or system-wide. I also like to delete FCP preferences from time to time to work out the occasional quirk. Odd that stabilization isn't there, though.
is it just me or is are the M1 MacBook Pros better at H264 compression? I've been surprised every time I export at how small the files are compared to the same export setting on my 2016 mbp
I've noticed that too. My file sizes when using the TH-cam export preset in FCP are quite a bit smaller but don't seem to be any lower in quality. I'll take it!
I exorcised Adobe products from my computer long ago. I mostly used Illustrator because I do light graphics work here and there, and that app just drove me nuts. So much of it was so counter-intuitive to me. Not to mention the exorbitant cost to subscribe to a package of Adobe apps just to get access to Illustrator. That's when I discovered the Affinity suite of apps and dropped $150 on Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher, and I've been IN LOVE with those apps ever since. Paid once for them and they're so ridiculously easy to use but still incredibly powerful. I just used Publisher to layout a 40+ page Strategy Deck for a client who wanted to start a TH-cam channel. And the new laptop handles them effortlessly.
@@matthewTobrien I see. Haven't tried Affinity but agree on the hefty cost Adobe takes for the CC packaging. I work as a image retoucher and have to use the applications that my clients use, with is ~ 75% Adobe CC and 20% Capture One and 5% InDesign/Acrobat etc. Therefor the interest in Photoshop tasks. Haven't seen any other really great and thorough test of Photoshop/image editing other than exporting large amounts of files or stashing panoramas. But I imagine that the M1 Pro/Max is great even there.
Yeah, makes sense when you've got clients who rely on those Adobe file formats. I totally get it. I'm sure if I put way more effort into Illustrator I would have gotten the hang of it, but what I love about Affinity Designer is that I had to put very little effort into learning it, and for what I do (text graphics) it's soooooo easy.
What your saying about it being faster due to being plugged in makes sense... But I'm also guessing that the 1st time exports, that it is doing some rendering... And then possibly keeping those render files, which don't need to be created on subsequent exports. Does this make sense or does anyone know this to be a factor?
It made sense to me too at first, but further research indicates that Apple purposely made it so that power or no power (unless the battery is near depletion) has no effect on export times for Final Cut Pro. So I’m thinking the video file I created of the Apple Event from this October (which was present in the timeline I used to run the initial 35 min export test) is incredibly resource intensive compared to the one I made of past Apple Events and used for this video that ended up being longer but exported in only 16 mins. Further testing required…
your performance increase means you definitely needed this laptop. but other people who get only a few minutes difference coming from the m1, don't need this upgrade.
Why always new tech to old tech?? No company going to make new tech run slower than the older stuff,. An apple didn’t / won’t support older machines under FCP
This gives Mac owners who are still using older machines an idea of what kind of performance increase they can expect. As someone who had an 8 yr old MacBook Pro and an 8 yr old Mac Pro before I bought my first M1 Mac, I wanted to know just how much of a performance increase there would be to understand the depth of return on investment I'd be seeing. There weren't too many videos that showed that, so I thought I'd make my own in case there were other Mac owners like myself. Appreciate you watching!
The only other thing I can think of is this: the software I used to rip the TH-cam vid of the Apple Event created a video file that was incredibly resource intensive to deal with. The footage from Apple Events I used in this video was created using a different app. I’m gonna have to do some more testing to get to the bottom of it… Didn’t try ProRes only because I don’t upload ProRes for my TH-cam vids.
Looks like a amazing machine, thanks for sharing! How is working in the timeline with M1 Pro, any studder or "shopiness"? And is it necessary to go M1 Max with 32 core GPU? Im using Sony a7SIII and really want to get away from my issues editing on 2019 Macbook Pro 16" (422 10 bit).
ZERO stutter, choppiness, or dropped frames. I've mostly edited my C300 MkII footage, but need to throws some 4K H.264 from my EOS R at it. It won't be 10-bit, but it does have a really high data rate compared to most 8-bit 4K H.264 cameras. I've edited that 10-bit 4K H.264 Sony footage before on my Mac Pro, and it just brought the entire thing to its knees. Had to optimize it just to play it back. Luckily I had the free space on my RAID to do so. Might need to pull that project out of the archive and see how it does. I'm especially curious about how fast it chews through noise reduction. Thanks for watching, Jonny!
@@matthewTobrien Thanks for the input. Yeah I think C300Mk II is easier on the system than EOS R and 10-bit from Sony. Would be interesting if you brought that H.264 timeline to your new Pro chip machine 👌 Btw, love your honesty on the channel. Watched your thoughts on Final Cut flaws, couldnt agree more. Keep it up.
Thank you! And I did do an export test with 4K H.264 from my EOS R - the M1 Pro chewed through it! 12-ish mins for the Mac Pro and just over ONE MINUTE for the M1 Pro MacBook Pro. 🔥🔥🔥
FAIR ENOUGH (M1 Chip is Excellent even compared to high end PC): You are comparing an Obsolete Technology from Intel Released in mid 2013 (9 Years ago) but apple used it for a long time over it's age (it is apple's fault not intel) just for selling point not for it's performance or stability since apple was at that time just caring about iPhone and iPad sales and don't want to create a Pro Computer for professionals and tried to make Pro users to buy iMacs (5k and PCI-e Gen 3 SSD with Thunderbolt 3 USB-C compatible 3.1 Gen 2) or in 2017 the iMac Pro which indeed consider a replacement for the Cylinder Mac Pro and it is better in most fields even eGPU is supported and up to four 5K Monitors the only downside to the 2017 iMac Pro is the internal Parts upgradability.
It is definitely not intended to be any surprise that the 14" M1 Pro is significantly faster and more efficient than the base 2013 Mac Pro. Really what I wanted to demonstrate was how this notebook could (even if temporarily) replace a 2013 Mac Pro for anyone out there still holding out hope that they can get by with their 2013 Mac Pro in their professional workflows. Although the MacBook Pro can't connect to as many peripherals as the 2013 Mac Pro, it can out-compute it sooooo much that it's worth strongly considering upgrading sooner rather than later. Appreciate you watching and giving a thoughtful comment!
Oh no! I just bought the Mac Pro (it cost $1200) without seeing any review video. Now I already regret it. Bettter I spend little bit more, and get the M1 Macbook Pro. So bad!
Yeah, the Mac Pro really lags behind the new M1 computers in export time. If you're creating content, then I'd highly recommend one of the new M1 computers. I still have my Mac Pro, though. I'm using it for a separate livestream workstation dedicated to Zoom calls and livestreaming. It's working great!
I think you can change the battery management in the settings. I check all Max tech videos and they don't mention any speed difference when they use only on battery. If i was wrong i'm sorry.
As I look into this more I’m realizing the battery most likely has nothing to do with it. It’s more likely the video files I made when converting Apple’s TH-cam videos into vids I could include in my edit. More testing required…
Curious on how your workflow will be working on an Intel-based system and exporting on Apple Silicon. Hopefully all the plugins you run on the Intel system have Rosetta support. I had issues switching back-and -forth and ultimately just settled on adopting the M1 ecosystem across all workflows. Saved me a lot of headaches.
I'm hoping to make a video explaining all of that, especially why I can't replace my Mac Pro with the new laptop entirely. Definitely want to show how I'll be handling the bulk of editing on the Mac Pro and then transferring to the laptop for export and then syncing back to my main storage for archiving. So many videos on my to-do list!
it took my old laptop 6 hours to export a 3 hour 4k video, and it took my ipad m1, 1 hour to export the same video. which is even faster than 1:1. anyway cool video. maybe you should wait for the rumored macpro, probably going to finish your project in a few minutes.
Actually your theory on why the laptop exported slower at first being on battery vs plugged in is wrong. There is something else going on because these new MacBooks (and older ones before it) would ALWAYS go full performance regardless of power adapter Vs battery.
Yeah, I definitely got it wrong. One theory was that my hard drive was still being indexed by Spotlight and that’s what impacted my Day 1 benchmark test.
@@matthewTobrien could it also be (keep in mind I’m an amateur FCPX user), that after the first export it saved some sort of render files? And then you forgot to clear out those temp files before repeating the export? Or does FCPX not work that way at all?
FCP doesn't work that way - especially with my preferences. I make sure it doesn't create render files unless I tell it to and during those tests I had "background rendering" turned off.
@@matthewTobrien did you just in case in the inspector tab for the library empty out all temporary files? Anyways doesn’t matter. The important thing is, the laptop is blazing, I can confirm myself. Got the upgraded M1 Pro 14in.
Ha! Exact same thing happened w/ my MBP16 delivery. Tracking ETA was hopelessly optimistic. Instead of Mon 11/8, it was Wed 11/10, then simply never showed "out for delivery", then finally arrived Thurs 11/11. As I'm watching, I'm wondering why ON EARTH you bought a *quad-core* Mac Pro 2013 in 2018 for video work...and left it that way! Maybe that's in an earlier video... It couldn't have been a good value, even if used (hopefully it was used), but if you were going to get it anyway, at least slap an 8-, 10-, or 12-core Xeon in there! Maybe you were thinking 3 years ahead for the certain beat-down you could showcase in this video...? 😂
B&H had the quad-cores at rock-bottom prices in early 2018 (pretty much what they were selling for used on eBay but with buying new I could get AppleCare for 3 yrs). I knew the base model could handle playback of my 1080 and 4K footage from my Canon cinema cameras no problem so I wasn't worried about not getting a 6, 8 or 12-core. I know I can update the CPU family easily and cheaply, but the D300 GPUs are what really holds back the Mac Pro. Fortunately I don't need to worry about what to do with it anymore because as soon as M1 Pro/Max Mac Pros come out, the trashcan gets relegated to the storage room.
I wish I could! I literally can’t, though, because my edit bay has too many peripherals. 4 monitors, 3 RAID arrays, a sound mixer, an HDMI switcher, Ethernet connection, etc. Every USB port and 5 of 6 Thunderbolt 2 ports are being used on my Mac Pro. There’s just no way to easily put the laptop in to replace the Mac Pro.
once again a test with which compares the basic 4 core version of macpro 2013.. it's unfair, it deserves a comparison with its most powerful configuration and not its weakest
Well, the point of the test, for me, was to show Mac Pro owners (who have lesser configurations like the 4-core and 6-core) how much of a speed increase the MacBook Pro is. My position before buying the 14" was, "Well, if I'm going to invest $2600 in a new Mac to replace my Mac Pro, it had better be SIGNIFICANTLY faster in order for me to do so." When I found out it was, I wanted to make a video demonstrating that speed increase to help other Mac Pro owners like myself with their decision to buy.
@@matthewTobrien it starts with a good intention, but unfortunately the comparison is not good .. I also own a macpro 2013 6 core .. but it would have been necessary to test with the best macpro 2013 to make a real comparison.. anyway, there are other videos that do this test, is the 2013 took a slap
But that wasn't the point of my comparison. The point of my comparison was to show those who own a quad-core or 6-core Mac Pro and are thinking about replacing it with the a 14" MacBook Pro what kind of performance gains they could see with a 14" over their Mac Pro. The comparison was meant to demonstrate my dilemma with upgrading knowing other Mac owners are in the same situation as me. It's meant to be personal, not scientific.
What an exciting year this has been for the Mac ecosystem and personal computers in general. Mind blowing numbers… would the distributed rendering of compressor allow to render on the MacBook without having to manually open or transfer the file? But on the same note, why not using it as the main workstation? I assume that also for the every day work it’s also going to be considerably faster… but I see how you are aiming for a future Mac Pro, can’t wait for the performance numbers on that.
I mean, it's been a loooooong time since I've been this excited about Apple tech. I still can't get over how fast and snappy this new laptop is. It's just remarkable. I have never actually messed around with the distributed rendering in Compressor, but now that I have THREE Macs, I should see how that entire process works. And I've been hearing a lot in the comments about using this new notebook as my main workstation - I wish I could, but I just have too many peripherals to do so. On My Mac Pro all 4 USB-A ports are being used, 5 of the 6 Thunderbolt ports are occupied, and I have it connected via Ethernet. I have 4 monitors, 3 RAID arrays (one that may not be compatible with M1), an 8TB hdd backing up one of the RAIDs, a hdd dock/toaster, a USB-A 3.0 hub, an SD/microSD/CF reader, an HDMI switcher, and an audio mixer... Plus I'd have to put the laptop under my desk because all of my cable management is immovable because it's perfectly routed to the Mac Pro. My hope is a Mac mini Pro or a Mac Pro Mini will allow me to just swap out the current Mac Pro for the new machine and be easily ready to go. Still, though, I don't think the Mac mini Pro will have enough ports to make it quick 'n easy. I'll have to condense my peripherals or look at seeing if there's some devices out there (docks/hubs) that can combine a lot of what I have. The shopping never ends!
I learned a lot from you so I am going to give you a secret 🤫. For TH-cam videos, instead of exporting to YT and Facebook file, export to Apple Devices 4K or 1080. Then upload it to YT. It's much faster uploading speed. Try it and thank me later ✌️😁
Et le scandale de Apple, c’est que l’on peut même pas le mettre à jour le Mac Pro avec Ventura, un scandale scandale, écologique scandale d’un développement. Il faut les attaquer en justice pour obsolescence programmée.
use old version of final cut at mac pro also that little cute device were the most expensive thing ever now i have it and new m1 m2 is optimized so its normal that pc is faster wellcome to apple world
Too bad they made it small - WE NEED BIGGER DISPLAYS Apple like the smallest one should me 15" then 17" to 22" then we can say it's good for work. I hope in the future you don't push us to edit videos and graphics only on iPhone but I still prefer the Mac Pro 6.1 no matter what. ....in the near future I may put an M2 inside Mac Pro 6.1 to be up to date.....muhahahahahaa

Honestly the Mac Pro handles all of my TH-cam stuff pretty much no problem as far as playback goes. Sure it's not quite as snappy overall as the M1 MacBook Pro, but it's never been a huge issue. The biggest issue is export time. Plus I can't plug my new laptop in where the Mac Pro is because I have way too may peripherals I rely on in my edit bay.

@@matthewTobrien UNLIMITED POWERRRRRR!!! ⚡️⚡️
Very interesting as I’m also still editing on the 2013 MacPro trash can, getting stuff cut and out as quick as possible is an issue with increasing demands from clients. So looking forward to 2022 and new Macs
Me too! Just wish it was likely to see new Mac Pros in the first half of the year. Probably won’t see them until Oct/Nov. 😢
Congratulations Matthew! I just got my new MacBook Pro this Saturday😃 enjoy!!!
Nice! Congrats to you!
It really is remarkable - so glad to have these new Macs in my lineup!
Wait: you've been using a 2013 Mac Pro this entire time??? Wow. I assumed you would have gone iMac/iMac Pro in 2018! Props to the Trash Can!
Yessiree. Still my daily driver, too. Hoping they release a lower cost Mac Pro Mini with M1 Pro/Max next year...

You've got that right, Rivu. Being able to take such a portable machine with you everywhere is incredible. I'm using mine right now, and I'll be out and about in Omaha today working on a lot of scripting and writing, and I couldn't be happier to have this M1 Pro 14" MacBook Pro.
not a mac book pro but a mac mini m1 bought a year ago, still blown away by the speed of it.
Yeah, a few friends have gotten those and they're just ridiculously fast.

the history of the ARM chips, low power for mobile devices is fascinating. These M1 devices are phone technology, repurposed as computers.
Yup, it’s pretty remarkable. I’m still astounded when using the new laptop. It’s so incredibly fast. Just like my phone… 😊
Thank you for the video. It was incredible.
You’re welcome, Joe!
Ok i use mac pro 2013 with 8 core , 16 gb ram and fire pro d600 graphics , which would be better for premiere pro ? open cl or metal ?
I'm going to make a somewhat uneducated response.... Metal. No matter what, our older Mac Pros are going to continue to struggle as footage gets more robust (10-bit 4-2-2 H.264). But I know next to nothing about the inner workings of Premiere to have any idea if open cl or metal are better for the application.
@@matthewTobrien no problem mate , fair enough and thanks for replying 🤝
Get the Mac Studio Ultra as soon as you can. It will again blow your mind!
I've got the Mac Studio Max and it's been a game changer for my workflows and productivity.
Happy for you man! And for us too cause we will get more videos lol

A question, do you think there's a Final Cut Pro / MacOS release where the Mac Pro 2013 works better or faster?

Nope... Apple's moved on from optimizing FCP for older Intel Macs. Eventually FCP will only work on Apple Silicon...

Hi Matthew, will you be using a new M1 Mac Pro for your main computer too?
Not sure if I’ll get one. I *_want_* one, but I’m sure it’s gonna start around $5k USD and I’m not sure it’s worth it when my Mac Studio handles everything perfectly. 🤷🏻♂️
@@matthewTobrien thanks, I was really interested you had a base Max. were you not tempted by the Ultra? im interested what the technical reasons for your choosing the Max were given you do big, intensive video work. did u do a video on this...?
awesome video dude!
Thanks, Brenton!
This was helpful. So you got the base model other than upgraded ram and ssd? My 2018 Mac Pro sadly isn’t working anymore and I forgot to renew my apple care, so now I’m in the market. As usual good stuff.
Yup! Base M1 Pro with 32GB of unified memory and the 1TB SSD. Wish I would have gotten the 2TB SSD, though.
I’ve been on the fence between the 14” and the 16” as I may just want to do all my color grading on the new XDR display.
Agreed! Maybe Final Cut Max? 🤔

Ohhhh I'd say it's gonna be future proof for sure. Congrats on the new MacBook Pro! I'm loving my new one.
Also loved the box opening😀👍
Haha thanks!
Hi Matthew,
Thanks for making these videos.
Hey, thank for the awesome review.
I have a question. Editing in Final cut pro using 14in screen, is it ok? Because im thinking about getting the 14in
I think it's juuuuust fine.
Lets cound the number of times he said the word 'PRO' XD
Not to mention “Pro” appears FOUR times just in the title for this vid… 😬🤣
I‘m waiting for my new M1 Max to replace my 2016 MBP. More than thrilled! But seriously how insane will the Apple silicon Mac Pro be?!
I've started to, by default, follow these Final Cut Pro troubleshooting steps Apple lays out.
support.apple.com/en-us/HT203477
Now, not all of them apply to every issue, but they're a good reminder of things we might often overlook when facing an issue.
@@matthewTobrien thank you so much for your response. I appreciate it. I will try your suggestions.
is it just me or is are the M1 MacBook Pros better at H264 compression? I've been surprised every time I export at how small the files are compared to the same export setting on my 2016 mbp
I've noticed that too. My file sizes when using the TH-cam export preset in FCP are quite a bit smaller but don't seem to be any lower in quality. I'll take it!
Great video! Some Photoshop comparisons between your old Macs and the new M1 Pro would be nice!
I 100% agree.
3 Hours is crazy for a render time! The battery should not affect the results unless they are running low. Have you tried exporting to prores?
The only other thing I can think of is this: the software I used to rip the TH-cam vid of the Apple Event created a video file that was incredibly resource intensive to deal with.
The footage from Apple Events I used in this video was created using a different app.
I’m gonna have to do some more testing to get to the bottom of it…
Didn’t try ProRes only because I don’t upload ProRes for my TH-cam vids.
@@matthewTobrien haha great, crazy fast. And most important is no stutter in the timeline, I hope 🙏
I am way more interested in timeline performance and actual editing. Can you speak to that?
This video was cool.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Thank you. I need to update my mac… Again.
Hope I don’t have to (or want to) for at least 5 yrs!
What are the spec’s on your 14”
Base M1 Pro (8-core CPU, 14-core GPU), 32GB unified memory, 1TB SSD. I wish I would have upgraded to the 2TB SSD, though.
Dang!!!!
I mean, it's just crazy, man. It's crazy!
I wonder how it would compare to a trash 2013 model with 12 core 2.6 64gb ram?
Me too! Wish I had one I could test it on. I'm sure it would be an improvement but I don't think it would be an insane difference.
I want that exact same color in the 16 inch.
16" is 🙌🏻
it took my old laptop 6 hours to export a 3 hour 4k video, and it took my ipad m1, 1 hour to export the same video. which is even faster than 1:1. anyway cool video. maybe you should wait for the rumored macpro, probably going to finish your project in a few minutes.
I can’t imagine the speeds of the new Mac Pro… ⚡️⚡️⚡️
So, how long until you try making it your main machine? 😌
Excellentes informations. Merci d'avoir partagé!
once again a test with which compares the basic 4 core version of macpro 2013..
it's unfair, it deserves a comparison with its most powerful configuration and not its weakest
🔥🔥🔥
I don’t think that comparing the M1 MacBook Pro to the entry level trash pro does any justice. I’d like to see it compared to the maxed out trash pro
Agreed. I wish I had one. My buddy Nick had one but he traded it in to Apple to get the 2019 Mac Pro. Thanks for watching, though!
You can upgrade the Mac Pro’s CPU to give it an extra life
True! The 12-core would be fun to add to it, but I just don't think I'd ever turn the old Mac Pro on again...
I learned a lot from you so I am going to give you a secret 🤫. For TH-cam videos, instead of exporting to YT and Facebook file, export to Apple Devices 4K or 1080. Then upload it to YT. It's much faster uploading speed. Try it and thank me later ✌️😁
Yes! I've seen this. I'm going to give it a try on my next video. Appreciate you nudging me!
put the paper back on the keyboard before closing it.
Excellent suggestion. I ended up getting a cloth keyboard cover thingy to protect the screen. 👍🏻
Et le scandale de Apple, c’est que l’on peut même pas le mettre à jour le Mac Pro avec Ventura, un scandale scandale, écologique scandale d’un développement. Il faut les attaquer en justice pour obsolescence programmée.
Be nice if vms worked.
I'm drawing a blank on "VMS"... 😬
@@matthewTobrien so is that a you know what vms are or ?
I'm drawing a blank on what VMS is. I probably know it, but my brain isn't figuring it out.
@@matthewTobrien okay I’m sorry, vms are virtual machines
@@matthewTobrien okay I’m sorry, vms are virtual machines, like running windows 10 through a virtual machine on a Mac OS or Mac hard
use old version of final cut at mac pro also that little cute device were the most expensive thing ever now i have it and new m1 m2 is optimized so its normal that pc is faster wellcome to apple world
Wow
Exactly.
Lol your from omaha. I am from lincoln!! Good video
Thanks, Ron!
