In this video we check out some significant tranmission damage as a result of an abused system all together. "Bang shifting" or "power shifting" has its perks situationally but eventually all things must come to an end when the abuse is too great.
Join me as we walk through this particular case and discover how certian part failure can result in different symptoms felt by the rider.

I have only ever power shifted a few times. I had an 81 kz750 with a frozen clutch, and that was the only way to test drive it. It seems easier to power shift if you rev high and with pressure on the shift lever, you let off the throttle entirely and the lever will usually move. Thanks for showing the aftermath!

power shifting is shifting while you're on the throttle, clutchless shifting done right won't damage anything
clearly, that guy didn't do a clutchless shift right
he probably just slammed it into gear without letting off the throttle in between gears

I’m glad I know this. I used to to clutchless shifting all the time, not constantly but like try to do it from time to time because my guts tells me that it is not a good idea, because if it’s designed to clutchless shift then it wouldn’t include a clutch kit to begin with. I appreciate this video man. I was taught power shifting when i got my first bike and I quickly decided it was not good. I feel like doing that for a couple weeks has caused some serious problems with my transmission. I'm scared to even know what's going on in there. I'm hoping the problem isn't the transmission, but it doesn't seem to be the clutch. It has a clanking noise accelerating in first and second gear, and slightly in third, and mostly under load while accelerating and the clutch is not engaged.

My gl1800 Goldwing lost most of its transmittion a few days back. Don't know why but it was sudden and totally unexpected. I'm now pulling off and riding in 4th gear everywhere. It lost 5th first then 1st and 2nd vanished followed by 3rd earlier today. I lost neutral and also reverse just 20 minutes ago so I literally only have 4th left. I have had five gold Wings and all of them have gone the same way. Some of them lasted over 80000 miles and some of them lasted just 80,000 miles. It is going to cost me the better part of 3 1/2 g to get fixed next month

    • @TheMotorcycleMD

I likely won’t make a specific video about it. But I personally would not spend money in an effort to machine away a problem that has been created which ultimately weakens structure of the gear.

I'd want to ask if downshifting with the clutch partially pressed is a problem as big as doing it clutchless. This question comes because I'm a relative new rider and yesterday I tried to put just one finger on the left lever as I do with the other hand on the brake. I'm not 100% sure to completely disengage the transmission/engine, because I cannot control the exact amount of pression I put on it. So, in case I'd be still in the friction zone of the cluch, my gearbox is soffering? I'm asking just for the downshifting and for completeness I manually blip the throttle in the meantime because it "sound" smoother. Am I doing something wrong for my transmission? Many many thanks.

Cody, when I purchased my 2014 Kawasaki Ninja 300 ABS SE from the original owner 3 yrs ago, I noticed something:
If I increase the RPMs past a certain amount (around 5000 RPMs) while in 1st, 2nd (and I think maybe 3rd as well), they suddenly want to jump up to redline.
It feels as though the gear is actually slipping out of its position and into Neutral.
In your expert opinion, what do think might be happening, and what is a good possible solution to fix this issue?

Using the clutch a transmission will usually last the lifetime of the bike assuming no factory defects are found. Best advice of longevity is reading the owners manual. Honda is pretty specific on what gears can be shifted at which speed. ( even though usually you’re fine just be careful from 1st to second) also make sure to use good oil and change it when needed. Magnetic drain plugs increase the life of internal bearings

Quickshifters - what is your opinion? Obviously not on vintage bikes but starting to be more common on new higher end models. I rented 3 different bikes with quickshifters, learned to keep RPM up as the system automatically adjusts RPM for next gear, cuts spark during the time of shift to take pressure off the tranny internals. As an old-timer I was very reluctant to use a quickshifter, but found it helpful getting on the freeway.

I think they are great! I’ve installed some factory made ones in Honda’s newer bikes. Electronics can speak to each other a lot quicker then manual movement of the rider in my opinion. Especially with slipper clutches and the stuff you described I see no issues with them!

I have recently got a cbr 1000 rr from 2004 whe shifted fine ran through all the gears just fine but 3rd gear would rattle alot but only with throttle closed, she didnt pop out of gear or anything just a rattle when decelerating.
I took out the transmission and found similar damage to my shiftdrum! had a big piece missing forks and teeth/dogs seem okay. What cause this? i can't imagine the mount of force needed to kick a chunk out of the shift drum. do you think it was a botched up or downshift?
