I have a Compact and use it constantly. Love it!!! I've attached a Nano Clip, which lets it hang unobtrusively inside my pocket. I am a huge fan of the combo tool. Amazing scissors. The pen has saved me at work more then once...lol I got it last Christmas and am finally getting the hang of sharpening it with the Victorinox ceramic pen sharpener tool. Fantastic edc pocket knife.
I have a Spartan, a Hiker, a Compact, three Climbers, three Swisschamp, a Workchamp as well as plenty other Victorinox models... My favorite models are the 91mm ones. The exact model will depend on what I believe I'll need during the day. If I'm outdoors, a Huntsman would be better than a Climber because the former has a wood saw whereas the latter is better for urban EDC. The Compact is comparable with the Climber - the first has two and the second has three layers. It all depends on what you need at the moment. You can't go wrong with a Victorinox knife in your pocket!
To me, the scissors are mandatory. So my "baseline" sak is the Climber, rather than the Tinker/Spartan. The Compact is cool, and I carry one sometimes, but it is more limited imo, because of the combo tool. I judge everything as compared to the Climber, using it as the standard of measure. This is just imo, of course.
I've carried a succession of Tinkers every day for about 40 years. I've lost some, surrendered some, given some away, and ruined one, . One thing I've never done is broken one. If my crotch is covered, I guarantee I have a Tinker or Super Tinker tucked away somewhere..
I have an Officers model, Large Blade, small Blade, Large screwdriver blade with wire stripper, Can Opener small flat head screwdriver, Leather punch and cork screw. On the blade it says Victorinox, Switzerland Stainless Rsstfrie. The other side it says Officer Suisse Umbrella or crossbow with a plus sign. It is red, It has a Teepee with the logo Camping and the Swiss Army Shield all in silver. It was purchased for $5.00 at a yard sale. It is my EDC small knife.
2:39 The Awl! To me, this is, after the actual knife blade, the most important tool on SAKs. I would not even consider ANY SAK that does not have it! I have done hundreds of jobs/tasks etc with this tool. My favourite!
I have a classic that I carry in my back packet everywhere. I have a swiss champ for true multitool and a one handed trekker for when I need an edc where i cant carry a firearm.
I have a swiss army knife that I found...really!! It has a big and small blade, a bottle opener with a screwdriver, and that notch used to bend wire. The notch used together with the big blade is used to skin wire as well. It also has a can opener with a smaller screwdriver. Then there's tweezers and a toothpick. I like it!!!
My favorite SAK is the Fieldmaster, which is in the Tinker line. It's a Super Tinker with a saw, I believe. Assume knife! The Compact is the one I carry most in town, however.
My tinker went missing. 😢 I replaced it with a new spartan. It's too nice to carry. I think it's new old stock cause it has an older tang stamp. I have a beat up wenger comander I'm gonna use.
My favorite 91mm SAKs *3 layer Camper* - (2 blades, bottle/can openers with screwdrivers, cork screw, saw, awl/reamer) *4 layer Huntsman* - (adds hook and scissors) *5 layer Ranger* - (adds smaller flat screwdriver, chisel and metal file) *6 layer Handyman* - (adds pliers) I just love having a saw. Corkscrews > T-grip Philip's drivers. Also, I always have to add plus scales and get my pen. Favorire 58mm Rambler Manager Minichamp I wish they came in black. I also wish there were versions with a light and no pen (since my 91mm always has a pen and I replace one of the other scale tools with a firefly ferro, the light plus the displaced scale toothpick would be a perfect compliment).
No worries. Love the videos, thanks for making them. I've been seriously considering modding a Scientist or Yeoman myself. I did find a guy on eBay who'd managed to get hold of some boxed and unused Scientists but, stupidly, eBay won't allow knife sales to the UK.
What a great video! Thank you! If the holy trinity of Swiss army knives are the basic knives from which most other knives can be created by adding layers, I would remove the compact and replace it with a Bantam. I know we may have a little 85 vs 91 mm issue there though!
Hi great video, in my few knives I have ,I found a Spartan, but it does not have the toothpick and tweezers, could you put an approximate date-? Thanks Dan
I like the 84 mm size. Spartan/Tourist, Tinker/Tinker Small. The closest to a small Compact is the Waiter. No scissors, but otherwise the same. From what I understand, the Tourist and the Tinker Small, as well as the entire Evolution/Delémont have been discontinued (2023 and thereafter). Sad. The Waiter seems to survive.
lol! I know right! hahaha :) I used it in making a SAK display, it was really dense wood and I used the corkscrew for some crude gouging. Thanks for watching!
@Sporty Guy Agreed. I still carry my *Wenger Swiss Sportsman* because it is 85mm and has scissors. Why can't Victorinox repair or replace their 84mm scissors machine? Surely they make enough money in SAK revenue to justify it.
Roberts square drive some American tried to swindle Roberts so that is why we did not see as much of them here they are big in Canada and Europe Norm Aberham from this old house knows these are great !!!
@3:15 at first I thought he was saying that they put Swiss Army knives in 1936 Cadillacs but he means the Phillips head screw first appeared in 1936 Cadillacs.
About 40 years ago I bought a “officer” model. It says “officer suisse “ at the base of the main blade. I would like to get one for my grandson. Any idea where I can get one? Google found none. Thanks.
Usually, when the emblem is on the back there is going to be an ad on the front scale. They started putting the parcel hook and around 1992 so I would say it is older than that
I am a subscriber who enjoys your videos and collect SAKs. A quick point however’ the combo tool does not LOCK at 90 degrees it is actually called a “half stop”. Great video however
For 2 reasons, I like red. 1. It's nostalgic and takes me back to my Boy Scouts years that I remember fondly. 2. EVERYONE knows what a Swiss Army Knife is when it's red and they don't bat an eye at it. Makes my life easier since I'm a gymnastics coach. Lol
I watched this 3 times and still was completely confused when you were comparing the knives. Many of us do better if you do one knife at a time thoroughly then go back and reference any comparative points.
I also bought the so-called best china made swisschamp clone.I laughed when the Ebay claimed it was just as usefull......lol.5 bucks for a POS knife.Well.........is good enough for a toolbox I guess....but don't get stranded on a deserted island with it
Good evening Mister Dan, for more precision in your great commented presentations in the base of Swiss genious you should know that the first spartan released version of the original SAK 84 was a „Standard““ (1897 to 1972). All 84s and all 91s were just Standards small (always 84s first, because of the material Risk at that time/. Switzerland was very poor and the people collected the horseapples from the street for „attirer“their own gardens and shared every carrot) and Standards big(91). There was no toothpick or tweezer housing inside. Additional orders of rich customers had never influence on the Easy way of live in the German part of Switzerland until now. A Schweizer Taschenmesser is a two layer Standard in 84 or 91mm. It’s a climber, a Huntsman or „ a newer one with pliers, how you mention it (that’s good). A climber without all. Perhaps there is a toothpick or a scissor (we use the singular „Schere“), but it’s a Schweizer Taschenmesser. Sometimes our Spartan (released as Spartan and Tourist in 1973 with scaletools and ring) looks like a Wenger Mammouth or a shelf in the Walmart, but a Victorinox is in the german speaking part of Europe a Schweizer Taschenmesser (your pronouncing by the way is perfect). And a Wenger is at least a Taschenmesser. Even in the extended Dry- aquarium-Vitrine in our Kinderzimmer. Other Taschenmesser -Brands we don‘t know in Europe, and we ignore them already before we start to think about them. Even the high-nose Germans, like me, have a deep respect to the Swiss creators of the SAK ( we never use this word and just want to be with you) . We ( the Europeans) respect this mechanical precision and basic colourchoice of Switzerland forever. It‘s love. But just for the Tourist and the Sportsman. The Tinker we hate. No place for the Hilti. The Spartan is too big. Not enough place for the lighter and the Labello close to the Asthma-Spray. Especially in the Lewi‘s 501. A problem since the Indepandance day. The Classic we never mention. It‘s for women. The mine is red. Since the third quarter of 1972 ( unofficial release) The Standard has a keyring and scaletools. In Ibach ( spoken E-Ba(and now the sound of the spitting Di Caprio on the Titanic) all Standards or Standards small called Modell 234 and Modell 234k , independant of scaletools. The “k” means “Klein”, the german word for small. A Standard S not exists. The Swiss people in the german part of Swiitzerland don’t accept English as the world‘s language. For them it‘s German. Reduce to the max. All you need is your personal nickname for a „Tourist“ and the Modell number 234k. You can use this Number in the same way like you use the word „tourist“. The Sportsman you can call „234k with file“ like you use the expression „Tourist with file“. It‘s not a Namegame, Dan. It‘s true. „Give me a tourist or a sportsman, and I save the world“. Great. Many thanks for this maniac moment in your video. I have a 234ka in my Jeans. It‘s a Tourist with scaletools and the grey Hilti in the corkscrew. And you? German spoken: twohundredthirty4khey English spoken: „the twothreesomthingwith a khey or an a““ or something with toothpick or Climber. I cannot remember. I thought it‘s a 234k for short and the scaletools are extra „a“. But I don’t know. We need a Victoria catalog. „ So up to you, which language you choose. The French will understand everything. Hola Italia! Thanks for all your help on my way in the micro valley , and all the best from Thailand on your screen. All the luck for you allone, Sir Dan! Cu
Hey Swiss Army Dan, nice video and interesting content. I think it would be great if you would show your face from time to time in one or another video. You are a sympathetic person which I like listening to. One important question is always: Would you like to share a room with that person? If you say no, like for Donald Trump, then the case is clear. But if you say yes, like for John F. Kennedy, you win a good experience. When watching your videos it's almost like being in the same room with you and enjoying to talk about a hobby. That is why a little more personal information, not everything, would make your show even better! It would be very interesting for example, how you started your hobby and why you built up such an extraordinary big collection of knifes. Yours Konstantin
