@earlbee3196 Good price for the quality of the knife. 🤣 I'm going home to give mine a smell🤣. Thanks for getting back to me, mate. I might carry mine today. Cheers brother 👊
Nice video, My EDC for many years has been the Spartan. Nothing on it I have not used. Has got me few a FREE BEERS!!! When in a group and the cry goes up.''Anybody got a bottle opener?'' Boom boom, Cheers from Australia.
Sometimes my Spartan stares me down when i have been wearing another piece for a while, and ask in a deep voice: where the hell have you been, man? :) Just love the form factor
Cheers, Gus. They have got me working like a dog atm. But I was missing youtube, so I chucked something together. I love the wood series! Hope you're well 👊
Great video Martin, I don't have need for a corkscrew, so the Hiker is the one for me,, it's so satisfying to get them screaming sharp again, after some decent use,, ps, did you see my final message about the Schloss Burg wood,,? So glad it is around 1133, after all,, cheers,, John.
I'll go read it now. I'm terrible at checking emails. I'm always getting in trouble at work for it. Mate, that's cool that you contacted them. And I think it's good that they replied fast also. Cheers brother 👊
The Pioneer is the modern(ish) incarnation of the 1890 Soldier knife, and has the same toolset except for the can opener being modernised, and the screwdriver incorporating a bottle opener. The whole 93mm alox range - Farmer, Harvester, Rancher, Pioneer X, Farmer X etc. - are based around that. That was also the longest serving model actually issued to the Swiss Army, the Soldier 61. I hate to be pedantic but although as you rightly say the 1890 model it was initially made by other manufacturers, in 1891, just a year later, Karl Elsener's company started making them. So it was the first Victorinox, and was the first Swiss Army Knife, ile. the first one used in the Swiss Army. The 1897 model was not issued to the Swiss Army, but was an ''Offiziers- und Sportsmesser'', and was privately purchased by officers who weren't issued the 1890 Soldatenmesser (Soldier's knife). This is why to this day the Spartan, and all other 91mm celidor models have the words ''officier suisse'' stamped on the blade tang.
This is a brilliant comment, mate. I need to look into this comment. Struggling for time atm. Thanks for all the info! I'll get back to this with a good reply when I get some time. Cheers brother
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. Can I just say first... You are clearly someone like myself and enjoy the knife history! I enjoy meeting people like yourself with a love for knives. Right, I agree with you about the 1890 being the same as the pioneer. But the 1890 was not designed by Victorinox/Karl Elsner. That's why I do not class it as the first Victorinox. As we know, it was made in Solingen initially also. That was my thinking.
I added a Spartan to my collection earlier this year, just because of the fact that it's a descendant of the original SAK. And it's a great carry piece, especially during the hot months when you want something light. Awesome video, my friend!
Hi Martin, I avoided Victorinox for years I didn't want a multi blade knife, them I saw they did single blade and just a blade and one tool knives so I bought the solo was so amazed at the build quality it made me look at more I have the Alox versions except for the floral knife in purple synthetic material, absolutely some of the best value knives you can buy. Doing your research well keep it up makes the videos more interesting cheers pal.
Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it, mate! I'm with you. The single bladed Victorinox knives are cheaper than a RR. I love them. I've got one in the floral range a sheeps foot. The material is very grippy. You can pick them up at a really good price. Cheers Lewis 🍻
dab some mineral oil on that Hardwood Spartan and the grain will show more and protect it form cracking from dryness. it looks very dry. it will take a few applications to protect and condition it
Thanks for the heads up. What do you use for wood other than mineral oil. I always ask people for inspiration. I've got beeswax and boil linseed oil atm. But I've heard some cool stuff to try. Any other suggestions?
Just used my huntsman blade today to cut through a digger battery terminal, thick copper wire. Not the best tool for the job , but the side cutter was useless the hacksaw didn't work and as a sort of last resort it cut through. Just happened to have the huntsman as my beater so wasn't to worried about the blade. As it happened it sharpened no prob . Just pleased i didnt have to use my Spartan which i normally have on hand or worse my Recruit or Tourist, or god forbid my Angler. I can sacrifice my huntsman, so if i think hard use might be coming i dig out the huntsman to save the Spartan, Recruit, Tourist and Angler, in that order .
Thank you for this clever review, which included interesting historical information. The Spartan really is an efficient model, capable of most tasks in a pocket friendly size.
The Spartan and alternatively the Tinker are great SAK's for light EDC carry. Thanks for sharing and talking a wee bit about the history behind it. Take care my friend and Cheers!
@ssechres Ah, man. Feel for you, brother. Im a big family, man. There aint nothing that is more important. "Those we love don't go away. They sit beside us every day". 👊

I’ve noticed that you often do this on your videos, fantastic buddy 🙏🏻 Love the walnut, gorgeous 😍 Thanks for this one brother 😎👊🏻 Just wondered if you’re going to the Sharp show?
I really enjoy the history elements to knife collecting. Unsure if I'm going sharpe show yet. I'm not the most sociable person 😂. Might go incognito as no one has seen my face. Cheers, Sean, always appreciate your comments, mate 🫡

Yes, indeed, sir, smells like teen spirit :-)
I've had my spartan since 1982 and used it as a daily carry and it still looks as good as new
Sorry for the late reply.

A great option for a SAK carry. It covers all the basics while remaining slim. Thanks for sharing, SCK.
Thanks, TK! It's one of my favourites. 🫡 👊

Totally agree with your points. Spartan is a perfect knife! Three layer ones with scissors are even perfecter 😅
💯
Or a compact, 2 layers with scissors, but they are expensive.

Thanks, Toad. I agree with you about the tinker....I carry that one a lot. I've got one I put micarta scales on, and it looks sweet. Cheers mate 🍻
The bladesteel is X55CrMo14.
X55CrMo14 is 1.4110, brother. Ones the grade the others the number. But it's the same steel. So we are both right my friend. 🫡
It’s So ling en. I barely understood what you were saying. Solingen. It’s a city in Germany where they make knives. I’ve been there.
I know my pronunciation is terrible. I'm learning 😂. I need to improve as I like a lot of European knives.
