    Good tips, I'd always wondered about that and they make sense now. and I'd like to add regarding fitting vacuum attachments at 4:02 - there is a TH-cam that shows how to use a heat gun or maybe blow dryer to heat up a plastic Perrier (or other plastic soda) bottle to make an adaptor. Just cut the cap end and bottom off the bottle to leave a tube, heat that up with the heat gun until the plastic is soft enough to form it over the end of the Planer vacuum port, the do the same for the vacuum hose end and Voila. I wish I'd seen that tip sooner because you can look for days at all the Plumbing pipe attachments and they will always be just a little too big or too small to fit, so the heat gun is the solution and it works for regular plumbing fittings as well to change their size as required.

    thanks man! hoping you can post a vid about the difference in technique or production process between the shoe set depth on the cheap ones vs the on-the-fly adjustment on the mod.

    Hey I know this video is from 2 years ago, but you're a pretty cool guy and answer this kook's questions..lol...I am about to modify an older Hitachi P20SB...its a lot cheaper to do than the Makita..I like the makita look more, but the cosst....My question is how important is it to have the fully modified planer (the DIY depth control and the moved handle/switch)? I use a Wen planer with just the shoe modification but I still get tear out...can't tell if fully modifying a Hitachi will stop that..maybe I'm jsut going too fast over the foam...either way, I plan on doing it cause of the love for everything surfing, and praying it makes my shaping better!!!

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mod planer isn’t necessary at all. I’d say the tearing is from cutting too deep and or pushing too fast. Possibly need new blades as well.

    Awesome content you are punching out man. What model is the makita planer you use? are you able to adjust it on the fly or do you find that not necessary?

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty sure it’s kp0800 from memory. I am able to adjust on the fly with the mod kit but It’s not 100% necessary

    Do you know where I can get an aftermarket knob for my Makita cordless?

  • @winder6
    @winder6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the tips was wondering what depth of cut can you get from your custom Maketa. Been using the Hitachi planer P20SB for 30 years and now it's been really hard to find parts for them liked and sub. Cool channel hope all is well Cheers

  • @kasimirhellstrom6724
    @kasimirhellstrom6724 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the great content. I bought the same Makita a while back, have not used it yet though. Do you experience any issues with static build up, and if so have you grounded the shoe of the planer or made any other modifications to it or the vacuum hose? I plan to shape EPS mostly.

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Apart from the anti static pvc pipe and slinky hose that vacuum system runs through I haven’t done any other mods to do with static.
      There is always a possibility of static charge when working with the dust particles and power tools but over the years I haven’t had any serious issues. And that’s shaping both eps and pu.
      You could probably run a grounding wire along the vac system to the planer if it was a serious concern?

    Do you just run yours with normal planer blades?

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeh man. I really want to get the shapers barrel but I can’t afford that right now. Normal blades are fine you just can’t push it too fast or it’ll tear the foam

  • @danielbonner8309
    @danielbonner8309 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ya those safety locks suck. There on most tools now. My Hitachi has a locking trigger and I added a locking trigger on my Skil. Without it your finger will go numb running the planer all day.

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      100% mate. It feels like the safety features make things worse sometimes.
      Those locking triggers must be a godsend 👌
