      And oddly the key would open and start a surprising amount of other motorbikes and cars... Don't ask 😬

      My first car was a R31 Nissan Skyline, the aussie model ones, pretty much any one of those could be opened and started with the key from any other once they had worn in for a few years, it was laughable how easy they were to break in to.

    It still took more than 2 minutes, a specialized tool and a lot of skill. And since this lock only gives access to the interior of the car, but there's still the chip for the alarm and immobilizer, that's pretty much good enough. Most car thieves will either pick a different car, or just smash in one of the windows.

      This does not stop a smashed window. Cars have locks and many cars now have alarms systems that check for the key-chip when unlocked and alarm if jimmy'd open, most thieves can't unlock the cars silently and KNOW this so most thieves DO NOT TRY to be quiet, they simply try to be FAST which means SMASH a window or try to jimmy the lock quickly and get what you came for and go.
      Leaving the trunk open, windows down, door open, glove-box open - those things may help it look like your car has already been sacked but may also drain your battery and serve as an invitation to use the vehicle as a trash-disposal unit. Open-window on the street means drinks and cigarette butts get tossed in by your typical a-hole testing his aim and proving his "rebelliousness". *shrug*

The easy, quick job should be like 20-40 bucks and then some taxes, of course. It's like getting charged 700 dollars at an autoshop to have a snap-on fender replaced for your jeep, and the fender itself costs about 100-200 dollars, but the replacement itself takes less than a minute.

      @Kevin Of course. But, there are plenty of trades out there that charge a ridiculous amount of money for a fairly simple and easy task. For example, my wife accidentally put diesel in my car a few years back (all the handles for every pump were green), but it didn't reach the lines or engine yet. So, I had it towed to a shop to have the fuel tank drained. They wanted to charge me 800 dollars. I said no. I took it back and drained it myself with no prior experience, and all I needed was one ratchet and a socket and about 10 minutes of my time. The only skill I needed was the ability to turn a ratchet.

    Bypassing the lock cylinder does not disable the alarm, though. There is a transponder receiver in the door handle that pings the transponder in the factory key. If there is no reply, the alarm remains active. So, as soon as you operate the door handle on the bypassed door, the alarm will sound and cannot be silenced unless you have a transponder-enabled key and re-lock the door with it, or put it in the ignition. Cool video, but still only helpful if the car keys are locked inside or the battery is dead. The alarm system has a separate sealed-lead-acid battery that can keep it going for days after the main 12V battery is dead or removed.

      There's no separate battery for the alarm. Im pretty sure the alarm wont go off if the key blade is used, its there in case the fob or keyless go system fails. There's main systems battery and then the aux battery for eco start/stop. No way you'll steal the car without very sophisticated equipment that gets a signal from the fob and copies it. This will take long enough to decide to run or smash the window though.

    Mercedes actually use this type of door lock on all of their cars and vans. Maybe trucks too, but I'm not sure. In fact, they have been using this door lock with that type of key for over 20 years now.
    I own 2 and the keys are very similar. I've never used the metal keys to unlock the doors, but here is a tip to make sure your door lock functions smoothly. Spray silicone spray into the keyhole once, or twice a year, to keep everything lubricated. Basic maintenance, same as lubricating window tracks to avoid stressing the window regulators.

    • @ExplizitDuester
      @ExplizitDuester 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer ballistol over silicone spray. I had a 22 years old 3-series and the locks were a little bit sticky and sometimes didn't lock. after treating the locks the locks funtioned like new.
      same with door hinges, show them some love (and grease) and they work way longer (and don't rust)

    Admittedly it’s a pretty good lock considering it took a pro 3 minutes to get in with the right tool. So you have to have the tool, know the car uses this specific type of lock, and then proceed to pick it without being caught. Pretty good id say. And it takes skill still.

    Years ago I had a mate who locked his keys in his car (Mitsubishi Colt).I gave him my set of keys (Toyota Celica) and told him give them a try. Given the age of the vehicles, I said it could be possible that his lock was worn enough to accept another key.
    I was right.
    He came back and held up a brass key on my key ring, and asked me what it was for. It was a key to my mums house! lol
    About a year later, someone broke a rear quarter window to get into his car. Stole a hand full of change and a mix tape. He was more upset at loosing the mix tape than the change or even tne window.

    Old Mercedes from 80's you could kick the bumper hard and it would unlock the doors because it thought it was in an accident. Old Dodge neon you could pull the whole lock core out of the door by cutting a tennis ball perfectly in half and using it like a suction cup. Good stuff.

    I have one of these in my Merc (it's an old CLK, not the S-class, but they are the same)..
    The key only allows you access to the inside of the car, does NOT let you start it, and in the soft-top (= convertible) models is actually redundant; its' ONLY function realistically is
    1) open the main door or the boot if the battery is dead or has been disconnected (Mercs batteries are in the boot, not the engine compartment, and the latch cannot be 'pressed' open if the electrics are dead as it is power assisted)
    2) actually to LOCK the glove compartment and the boot, if/when you drop the car off at the mechanic's or valet's, as you can leave the fob with them (to start the engine drive the car etc) while at the same time preventing access to any personal stuff CDs etc you've left in the car..the fob does not open these.
    The ignition has been an infra-red transmitter since the mid-90s, the physical key is there to protect at most your sunglasses and maybe your jacket in the boot! It doesn't need to be high security..
    Germans know what they are doing, no-one has ever accused them of under-engineering anything! 🤣

    Most companies just use the same type of locks for all their models and even brands. I know a friend of mine once worked at a garage, they had a Ferrari parked outside of which the key was lost or something, so they tried the key of a Fiat Cinqueciento (Ferrari was still owned by Fiat back then) of a similar build date and they could just open it with that to move it out of the way. Not start it oufcourse because of the transponder, but still.

    I've tested many of these types of cars. If the manual key is used to unlock the door, as soon as you do so the electronics will re-lock it instantly. i.e. you cannot use the manual key to unlock it. The manual key is only used if the car battery drains flat and nothing else works.
    Due to this, it doesn't have to be very pick resistant.

    • @BrianSu
      @BrianSu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can unlock it with the manual key if the keyfob is within range. it doesn't require battery to be detected. Remember all car keys have built in immobiliser chip that must be present to start the car, they are powered by radio waves from the car.

    There is an old story about a plumber who is called to fix a blocked pipe. He goes under the house with a pipe wrench with the owner following. He takes the pipe-wrench and whacks the pipe which frees the blockage. He writes out a bill for $200. The owner complains that he only whacked the pipe with a wrench. The plumber takes back the bill and revises it: Whacking pipe with wrench, $2. Knowing where to whack pipe with wrench, $198. So it is with good locksmiths.
