@@NickStewartProgrammer I've been an automotive locksmith for 40 years. We run 120 to 150 calls per week. Guess how many times we pick car locks? If you said zero you would be correct. No need to pick car locks. We use professional tools to open doors. In some odd cases to maybe to get a trunk open. It's not the trunk lock you are picking but the door to disable the alarm that's keeping the trunk from opening. Usually you can pull the lock anyway and manipulate the latch. Most guys who are using a Lishi use it to decode the lock to cut a key. To be honest we don't have time to for that being so busy. We stopped pulling locks years ago unless it's quick and easy. We pay for key codes and pass that on to the customer. They would pay the same price for our labor so it's not more money. We try to work smarter. Picking locks if you are an automotive locksmith would be a very little used skill. I impressioned locks back in day. That is an entirely different skill set. Also pretty useless on modern cars.

I suppose the biggest surprise is how recent the model is. Most of the Automotive Lishi tools seem to be only good for older model vehicles - still very common vehicles, but rarely anything under 10 years old. Picking a 2020 year Toyota is quite recent.

Lishi tools are available for almost all the latest vehicles and new ones are released as new vehicles come on the market. You'd be hard pressed to find a car on the road that doesn't have a tool available. But not all of the tools are sold on locksport websites.

This type of lock has been in use by Toyota since at least MY (Model Year) 2015, likely earlier. (Got a South American MY 2015 Corolla manufactured in late 2014 with that lock and similar keyfob -- only difference is that the middle button in mine is the trunk release instead of a panic button).
(And while I do appreciate the faint praise LPL gave this lock and the fact it put a decent fight, the fact that each wafer has only three possible cuts is... disturbing)
EDIT: Just checked my car key; the bidding seems longer, and it doesn't have the groove in the middle continuing that much (the keyway seems to end at the last wafer/position 😊)

I'm a Toyota tech. I agree that the immobilizer is going to stop attempts to drive off. Toyota actually increased the length of time and number of steps it takes us to program and cut the keys a few years ago. After some GM dealers in California were having reports of customer vehicles driven off after having service work done. Seems those techs were cutting and programming or cloning keys that were then used to steal said vehicles by other parties. We have a managers involvement in every key job now, and that goes for every Toyota dealer.

I have not had need to open a RAV4 of this year but I will assume that the system is the same as Prius and Camry of the same model set.
If you just need to open the vehicle to recover the keys or to release the child locked inside, (locking your keys in is possible if it is lower entry level model), an air wedge and basic lockout tool set is probably easier than picking.
All that aside, over the years I did AA breakdown service, we had the opportunity to buy these picks for use on callouts.
They were not supplied as a standard part of job and I never got to buy my own for financial reasons.
I did get to use a variety of pick sets that I borrowed off other drivers.
I really like these picks, they are great if there is no time pressure from the owner to get their car open and we can be left alone to practice.
If there is time pressure to open the vehicle; i.e. child trapped inside in high temperatures, the basic answer is masking tape and dot punch at best.
As LPL has stated, being able to pick this lock will get the door open. It will not bypass the antitheft systems by itself.

    • @cheesecurd100s
      @cheesecurd100s 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah wedging the door open always runs the risk of damaging it. Bending the door scratching the paint etc. I believe this is the least destructive method which i think is the point here. I also have had to replace ingition cylinders on cars where the key has been lost and it needs to be turned for that so this would save a lot of money instead of having to replace the whole assembly.

Our Rav 4 notices when the key fob is right out side the door and unlocks for you. It works on both driver and passenger side. There is a little key built into the fob incase the fob battery goes and you need to unlock the drivers door to get in. Personally that was some picking you did though. Those tools are becoming more and more complex. Back in the good old days you could pick the hand cuffs with a paper clip.

I like how LPL's "a bit more effort" + "not much of a challenge" = No F-ing way for normal people
Remember the door lock is just a deterrent, the car has multiple windows so if someone wants to get in, it WILL happen. If it is easier to replace a window than pick the car door...
THIS is why a friend of mine (who used to steal cars for a LIVING) told me the best anti theft device was the Club. Not because it was hard to pick(I seem to remember LPL opening one in a few seconds) but because the car next to yours wouldn't have one and no thief would bother with a car that was that much harder to steal. So is a Rav4 worth the effort to pick this lock? "Probably not" in the mind of the normal, run-of-the-mill car thief. Still an awesome video.

Yeah i think the point of these tools is for mechanics and locksmiths to be able to get into the vehicle with the least damage done. Seems like most of the cars stolen in my area nowadays people will snatch it with a tow truck, and if just trying to get in will smash the windows.

Mr. LPL, your channel is a must-watch for me, and I thoroughly enjoy every video you post. I do have an ask for you--could you show some picking in "real life" settings? Holding the lock in your hand or clamping it in a vice is cool, but what about a deadbolt in a door with clearance issues, or a car lock that is actually in a car door? How do those conditions impact pickability and the time it takes to pick a lock? Just wondering if you'd be willing to show your skills and techniques in those settings. Again, thank you so much for your videos, and keep up the outstanding work! Be safe, be well.

He has picked a few locks that weren't under controlled conditions(IE vid 1071) but, generally it's not considered a good idea to do so because if something goes wrong you could damage the lock internally or cosmetically.
As far as picking a lock with "clearance issues" or other environmental difficulties are concerned, I believe he stated previously that you "just deal with it".

I've commented a few times about this too. Sometimes his hands would technically be inside the door he would pick. Or when he holds a lock in his hands, that angle would never happen in real life. But I remind myself it's just for demonstration and to get the best camera angle you have to be in a controlled environment. Still, I would like to see more field trips from LPL.

Judging by the time it took the LPL to open the lock, a less talented thief will have a challenge.
