    I have a custom set of Paulsons that I had made years ago. Its a 500 chip set and they are just outstanding to play with. However, because of the possibility of damage or loss. I got a cheap set of Poker Knights chips. They are kind of bland, but will work with my home games. World of difference between them for sure.

    Hello John. I used almost all your videos in my research for a new set of chips, to upgrade my first set of the aluminium dice chips. I would consider myself a regular player. After hours of research, I actually went with a set that you had not reviewed. The Lucky Horseshoe clay set. They were very inexpensive, and I am beyond impressed with the product. They have a great weight, and an awesome feel. They have a casino look with the multi color pastel scheme. The quality was great and out of 750 chips none of the inlays were damaged or misplaced and all of the chips were in perfect condition. Was just thinking you would like to do a review on these! (Unless you have and i somehow missed it). I got them for < $0.17/chip total, including shipping.

      @@josephcorrente8484 I know it's been three years since you wrote your comment, but for those reading this comment in the here and now; Discount Poker Shop was the first online retailer to offer these chips for sale and still offers them for sale at the time of me writing this comment. Since then, however, other online retailers (such as BBO Poker Tables) offer these chips as well.

    I have 2 questions:
    1) In which category would you put the desert palms?
    2) I wanted to order a set of 300, but I don't know how many chips of each denomination to buy. We usually play in 3 or 4.
    Thank you

    I have an important question for you. love these videos. for anyone who happens to care about poker chips as an interest, your reviews are incredible. but I'm about to order a nice upper middle class set of chips and something is bothering me about your Milano review. in your original Milano video, you showed how the Milanos are not flat and the stack wobbles back and forth a little. but now, in this video right here @ 4:22 you hold a stack of Milanos and press them (seemingly) perfectly flat. they don't rock back and forth like they appear to in the original review. is this a newer set of Milano? have they improved? I'm basically stuck between choosing a set of Milano or a set of Pharaoh. thanks for making these reviews!

      This is a good question. Quick answer, my sample size is too small to say with confidence but I have seen an improvement over time in ALL china clay chips. The chips in this video are a mix of all three of my Milano orders but likely newer. With chips priced at this level you risk variance. One reason I started this channel was to educate about the variables in purchasing a chip set. Unfortunately, the quality control of Milanos and Pharaohs will vary. This is also very fitting as this question also applies to some ABS chips I just purchased. Watch for more. China clay final thought, you know what you are getting into - tell us about the quality control, but don't let that stop you from enjoying them. Most people that will handle your chips won't notice, and those that do will understand variance in China clay chips. I, of all people, know the problems with my Milanos, but just last week I used them on my craps table with pride. This is the short answer, I might make a video about all this. Thanks for watching, and opening the statistical nightmare of sample sizing.

      I have a 2000 Milano set. I haven't had any "flatness" issues with them. I absolutely love them.

    I agree - the feeling of Paulson is unique and you can feel the high quality from the first grab.
    But: 9g are a little bit less heavy for me; and the edge markings looks like painted by a child. I know it's because of the production process - but a perfect chip don't only have to feel perfect, but look perfect as well. My opinion ;)

    I have sets of both Paulson and CPC customs and i honestly prefer the CPC chips over all, the Paulsons probably have a slightly better sound and the colours are awesome but the CPC set do seem to stack better and have a better feel.
    The Paulson set is the World Top Hat and Cane.
    The CPC set is on the Circle Square mould with shaped inlays.

    The "Ascona" chips are referred to a a hybrid chip. From what I gather, that means the chip is a combination of ceramic and clay? The samples are proving hard to obtain. I am curious though. It seems you can get ten of one denomination, just not one of each.

    Just got a 10 $1 chip sample from Key West... They are amazing chips. No "spinners", all have pretty much the same dimension, and they are very aesthetically pleasing. My only complaint like Hobbyphilic says is with the inlay, as the inlay is not always perfectly centered and you can probably scrape it off if you dig your nail in deep.

    • @SergeantExtreme
      @SergeantExtreme 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true. You'd destroy the entire chip before you got a Key West inlay out.

    Hi John. Thank you for all the excellent reviews. Oddly enough I don't play poker but did want nice chips to learn cool tricks like the ones they did in the movie Casino Royale. Your reviews were helpful as I didn't need "awesome" chips but did want nice, tactile feel from them. For a couple bucks I ordered the Milanos but am curious if you have thoughts about whether any particular chip might be better for that kind of thing. Thank you again!

    • @Hobbyphilic
      @Hobbyphilic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. *MY OPINION Some tricks, rolling or standing variety, do best with a sharp edge Paulson or ClassicPokerChips style of chip. Others, shuffling or flipping, really can be done with any chip. I prefer nonmetal insert. The nice thing about tricks is that you don't need 500 but can get several small stacks each stack from a different manufacturer. You could even go the Bellagio and buy ten $1 chips... You might find yourself on the road to becoming a collector of sorts. Thanks for watching, I find it fascinating to think about the poker chip world from that standpoint. I would also invite anyone with experience to chime in.

      I got the Milanos and found I like heavier chips. I see ApachePoker sells samples of the Paulsons, or perhaps I'll get some of the Claysmith 14gram chips. Thank you again for the videos and your reply!

    You have made some great videos! I've enjoyed them and learned a ton. One chip I was interested in and hoping you'd review is the Yin Yang 13.5g. There is very little info on them anywhere. The only reviews I can find are positive but they are few and far between. Do you have any experience with these chips? Thanks again for all of the videos!!

    If you could also add into the criteria longevity as well. All I'm looking for a higher quality chip that can last a lifetime and feel great in hand within the $100-130 price range. I'm not a die hard poker player, but I like to play here and there with friends. Great videos btw!
    Thanks again.

      Wow, those are all good chips. Scrolls are a solid bet. No smell, durable - if you like the ceramic feel. Milano vs Nexgen Progen - They are pretty similar except feel (texture) and smell. Milanos feel more like a clay chip but they smell like burnt plastic. Nexgen feel more like plastic but don't smell. The week point on both is the sticker inlay. I haven't noticed a difference in longevity, if anyone else has some input I'd like to read it. Nexgen are just so much less expensive... How many people you play with? If it's more than four I would seriously consider the 500 nexgens. If not, I highly recommend getting samples of the Milano and Scrolls to compare side by side. Let me know what you get, thanks for watching.

    hello, i have a important question for you. whats the number o chips that u recomend for 6 players, a set of 300 chips is ok ?

  • @patrocks24
    @patrocks24 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    $120- 500ct nexgen pro
    $113- 300ct Milano
    $119- 300ct Scrolls
    I want you personal opinion between these three chip sets? Then single out Milano and nexgen pro and tell me which would you recommend based on quality and durability between the two?
    Thanks, I would appreciate it..

    Hi John! Have a question for you. I am looking to upgrade my current Monte Carlo chip set (500). I am looking to get an above average set, and going by this video, the closest to Paulson feel and quality. Again, using this video, would i be better off with Key West, Pharaoh, or maybe even the Milano? ... PS. great video!

    • @Hobbyphilic
      @Hobbyphilic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would order a sample set of Key West and pick a sample set from your favorite China clay - Dunes clay, Milano, Majestic or Pharaoh. Having a sample set of Key West vs China clay that you can handle and feel is worth more than any advice I could give. It also gives a great insight into the world of Classic Poker Chips customs. Hope that helps, thanks for watching.

    • @TheJJodice
      @TheJJodice 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      that definitely helps, thanks! I ordered a sample set of the Pharaoh... would you say the Milano, Dunes, Majestic etc are all about the same quality/feel to these? Just going by what i see in your videos, the Pharaoh set seems to look at the very least a bit more "premium"

    • @Hobbyphilic
      @Hobbyphilic  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the material on those all feel the same. The Pharaohs are lovely and have a nice progression. Let us know what you decide.

    Thanks for the awesome videos, very helpful. I have a question to anyone based in the US. I'm heading over in late Feb, visiting San Fran then Vegas and LA. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to pick up a set somewhere but could someone give me a hand as to some recommendations as to an actual retail shop to visit to check these out?

    Hobby do you know why they stopped producing paulsons chips?

    • @Hobbyphilic
      @Hobbyphilic  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I have no insider information about that. I suspect they increased production for new casinos, like Wynn Everett, Wynn Palace etc.. and the consumer grade chips got put on the back burner. It is also possible they have new technology, materials and designs they are implementing on the consumer side. Good question, thanks for watching.

    • @Zyrial
      @Zyrial 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The completely unsubstantiated rumor is that the wide availability of consumer Paulsons online, especially on places like eBay, was devaluing the brand in the eyes of commercial clients, so Paulson ended consumer production to drive up the secondary market prices and increase the value of the brand. They make their money on casino sales, and consumer sales weren't enough to preserve when their commercial clients were complaining, if the rumor is true.
      That said, I would love to see the return of Paulson to the home market. 'Til then, we have what we have. Thanks for making these videos!

    • @SergeantExtreme
      @SergeantExtreme 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Zyrial Sounds about right: enticement through exclusivity. If you want to play with Paulsons, you have to go to a casino.
