    G'day from a sunny but cld Sydney, Australia. Thx for another great, informative video Drake...I love the red bell alarm...you could also use that for your boat alarm in case someone boards your boat while you're asleep...Sailing Nahoe had their boat alarm activated while at anchor in Victoria harbour Seychelles & two guys boarded their vessel triggering the alarm one night...Ben dashed out but couldn't catch the thieves as they'd already got back into their kayak (which had been stolen from another yacht earlier in the night) but managed to film the guys and they were arrested a few days later. The Seychelles are the last place one expects to be robbed, so they were lucky to have the alarm activated that night. We spent 3 weeks in the Seychelles and whilst asleep in our BnB one night, were robbed...the day before we'd withdrawn a large amount of cash to pay for a charter (the captain wanted USD cash for the trip) and we reckon we were spotted withdrawing the money and followed back to our BnB. This happened in 1993, so it looks like there is still a lot of petty thievery going on there. Safe travels guys.

    In commercial shipping it is called BNWAS. We have an understanding that the reset is always pushed before the first alarm. When the frist alarm sounds a few times, we know the skipper is too fatigued and at least needs company. We sail with a crew of 10 with only the skipper and an Engineer on watch. Most often the cook or the bar man gets up, and gets the skipper some coffee.

      We have one for the Engine Room on my ship if we don't answer an alarm within 5 minutes or so. We fear that alarm. It is so much louder than the general alarm.

    That product is an absolute must when on the water. I can see having that without any argument whatsoever. That protects everyone. I don't have a boat and you taught me something. Thank you. I hope you and Mo are doing well. Safe travels!

    Installed that on my boat a while ago. I was wondering when you were going to realize how loud the alarm is😂. I single hand so don’t have the second alarm. Great video.

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks S/V Della Jean! Ha! Ya, the first alarm is pretty loud. After I put the foam over it I think I got the volume level just right. But I think the 2nd alarm can still come in handy if you're single handed. I think if the engine and wind noises are loud enough, and if you're sleep deprived and exhausted enough, then you might fall asleep and not hear the first alarm go off. In that case, the 2nd alarm will definitely wake you up no matter what.

      Ah brilliant, we love having this aboard! It's pretty fantastic on coastal hops or day sails, but we would not even consider going offshore without having an alarm like this aboard. It gives peace of mind for everyone on board whether they're on watch or resting below. Cheers! -M

    Great review Drake, I had tried a while ago to find your other Watch alarm but as you say it is discontinued which is a shame. Anyway this one looks just as good. How much time between the initial alarm and the second alarm. Thanks. Andy UK

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andy, Thanks! On the Aqualarm you have 30 seconds to hit the button before the 2nd alarm goes off. On the Watch Commander it was a full minute, but we found that 30 seconds worked fine too. So far we've used the Aqualarm to sail 215 nm from Faroe to Shetland and 400 nm from Shetland to Denmark, and it has worked great. I really like how you can always see on the display how much time remains.

    What a great piece of equipment Drake - on another subject - Armaflex insulation - just what I am looking for - can you give me soome feedback - has it helped.. cheers

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. :) We love Armaflex insulation. I've installed countless 3x3 meter rolls of 32 mm thick Armaflex on our hull, from the deck to the floorboards, and also on the underside of the deck, and I think it has made a huge difference. I far prefer the version of Armaflex that has the self adhesive backing. You can stick it right on the hull, and then it becomes a part of the hull. No airspaces between the insulation and the hull, and little to no condensation. We then covered most of our Armaflex with Reflectix, or with a thin, but much stronger foam insulation to protect the Armaflex. I think it's great stuff, and worth the price. If you have any questions about it, please feel free to ask. :) - Drake

    • @DirkJacobsz
      @DirkJacobsz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drakeParagon shew thanks for that Drake. I have been looking for something to insulate the boat as we want to visit places - like you do. So want to try and keep the boat warm So excuse my ignorance..if i ask a stupid question. Does it reduce condensation The self adhesive one seems the go I have been online trying to find it to buy some- any suggestions - or can you point me in the right direction. Have also bought an Omnia oven after your recomendation thanks.

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DirkJacobsz Hi, yes it does help reduce condensation. For example, previously there were areas of the inside of our hull that were covered with strips of teak, with a small air space between the teak and the hull. In the winter, tons of condensation always formed right on the inside of the hull, and that condensations turned it into a dirty, moldy mess. I got rid of all that wood and just put up Armaflex insulation, adhered directly to the hull, and then covered that with Reflectix. And now the condensation has been mostly eliminated. Sometimes when it gets extremely cold, below freezing, then a small amount of condensation might appear on the Reflectix, but it's easily wiped up, and far less of and issue than it was before. As far as condensation goes, I think a desiccant dehumidifier can make all the difference in the world over a winter, if you're hooked up to shorepower to run it. Here in the UK, I used to be able to buy Armaflex from many different local companies, but after Brexit, it became almost impossible to find. At this point, I can only find it for sale on eBay from a distributor in Poland. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323122509693?hash=item4b3b9a377d:g:5JkAAOSwXOhaT5sx&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoCAcFdFIb4v3nKNneWLFPaXzP3GWcQxkA3F5bkdoMpqXZelMQ%2BHJvH1YrysEjWxHfbdSESqgRmq2H4ifKzdw0kb%2BZpKlhzOuK17RaG3MDh30w0vHLnUAjE7jeLwHoUvKIxKMu%2FwVVf0Z7ZOzAVir6dHUFibxxQFdbfgSwO09WM5wt8Aqt5m%2FU%2FNUdWml7ER9tW3ZjcwwHX%2F1wKrEqv3dyYo%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-DCmLSaYQ

      Hi Bill, thank you. Over this summer we are doing a lot of long distance passages and when coastal we're moving the boat a lot, so we just don't have time for a lot of video production. But in October/November we'll settle down in a winter harbor, probably in Shetland, and then I'll start up the full time editing work. Hopefully then we'll get back to at least a video a week or more to tell the story of our voyages throughout Scotland and Ireland. :) Thanks for waiting for the next season. I can't wait to tell those stories! All the best, Drake

    How this recognize other boats on the way, since it is called a wacht alarm.

    • @AndyUK-Corrival
      @AndyUK-Corrival ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn’t, it is purely to make sure the on watch crew doesn’t fall asleep or if something happens on deck the off watch crew will be alerted.
