Hello Ruth, it’s Maria here. Thank you so much for featuring me in the video - I really enjoyed watching it and I hope you had fun making it too. I am really looking forward to taking part in the highland games this year and I wish you luck on your next adventure!
Not quite as sunny this year..but stayed dry.We finally got the last tent in the shed today..we had a social till late after the majority of clean up was done. You got a mention in Rick Steves travel forum today.
I am a member of the Clan Colquhoun society and as well as website designer attended the clan games at Luss each year. So watched many of the highland games in the field. Best was in the procession from car park to games field vis Luss pier on west shore of Loch Lomond. All behind a couple of pipers. No matter how maybe i have heard. The sound of the pipes brings out the proudness of being Scottish.
Hi Ruth , that was great I’ve never been to a ceilidh or a Highland Games despite living in Scotland all my life. You’re a joy to watch as your so bright cheerful and always have a smile. It was good to hear from the up and coming youngsters who are keeping the traditions alive, well done to them. 👍Looking forward to your next adventure, have a great week. 😊x
The thing which makes the Scotish Highland Games so good is how raw and honest and under produced or stage managed it is. That's so refreshing .No stupidly overblow million billion dollar stadia or stadiums . It's more like a music festival with a big focus on kaber tossing , highland dancing , tugs of war, and all the other brilliant stuff like hammer throwing and shot putting.
I remember 56lb (pound) weights (an approx 20 X 12 X 15 cm cube of iron with the cylindrical handle and semi circular cylindrical cut-out forming a hand grip in the top surface) being used with a rope tied to the handle to hold thick plastic sheeting over market stalls in Swaffham market - they were a very common sight in rural communities in the 1980's
We have many Highland Games here in Ontario Canada. I’ve been a piper since the age of 11 and have spent 50 years playing and competing at Highland Games. So much fun. Enjoying your travels.
Ruth, I just came across this video and must say that it so reminds me of the Highland Games and Gathering of the Clans at Grandfather Mountain and McRae Meadow here in the mountains of North Carolina USA. It is one of the largest gatherings in the United States and happens in July of each year. Love your travels and I cannot wait to come back to Scotland!
It's slightly amusing that you are a native Scot and just went to your first Highland Games -- I am of Scots and Irish descent living in Maryland in the US, and I have been to many Highland Games (and Irish Festivals) in my life -- not that far from home! But now I hope that you try to get to one or two a year to hang out with the friendly and motivated folk -- do some dancing and have some great food!
My favourite Highland game is Sheep Worrying. You have to walk up to a sheep and ask it some awkward questions, pose some existential dilemmas that sort of thing. If you can make the sheep frown you win a prize such as a Tunnock's Tea Cake and the sheep is offered counselling.
I am Scottish from my mother's side, and I have attended a couple of the games in Maryland (USA). I had a wonderful time. Thanks for the great vid, Ruth!❤
That was really good Ruth. You are a natural. Very entertaining. I’m happy you got to see Glencoe, and the sands of Morar are beautiful too - I hope you found time to visit Camusdarach which is (IMO) the worlds best beach where some of “Local Hero” was filmed. Keep up the good work! Cheers. Ian
Thanks very much Ian. I did explore more of that area but it was mobbed! Peak August was not the time to be there. I couldn't even get parked at the sands of Morar. I'll go back another time off season.
Awes Awesome Ruth. Great insights into this well known tradition. I attended my first ceilidh at 17 in Aviemore which was also my first ever solo holiday. Fantastic memories from that.😊
Looks great. Another superbly done presentation. Thank you. I visited the silver sands of Morar on the way to Mallaig to get the Skye Ferry. I stayed in Arisaig and had a wonderful stay. Some amazing sunsets.
A great Scottish institution! My one and only attendance at a Highland Games was as a young teenager back in 1973, when I attended the Lochaber Games in Glen Nevis. A great day out. Keep up the good work Ruth!😊
Hi Ruth! Another enjoyable video! Thank you! I know you have family in Canada so when you come visit one time you must come to the Highland Games in Fergus Ontario. Fergus has very deep Scottish roots dating back to 1833, when Settlers called it "Little Falls" because of it's scenic waterfalls. The town was incorporated in 1858 and renamed Fergus in honour of it's Scottish founder Adam Fergusson. Close to me we have castle Kilbride, a grand Victorian home of James Livingston from East Kilbride Scotland. We have many rich Scottish heritage in Canada. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
I've been to a few of the Highland games and the Edinburgh Festival love it and had some great Scottish nights out ❤😊thanks for sharing bonnie lassie xx 😀
There are many Highland Games here in North America too. What a great way to spend a couple of summer days. Thanks for this lovely survey of what they're all about. I think you covered it all! In 2000 I also had a wonderful time in Dunoon at the Cowal games and the Highland Dance championships. Those dancers are in awesome shape - very impressive.
That's interesting, have you attended any of the Highland Games events in North America? I'd love to attend another Highland Games event sometime, it was such a fun weekend!
@ruthaisling Yes, I've been to Highland Games in Washington and British Columbia and a "fiddler's convention" in North Carolina. Wonderful days out (sun screen a must!), but none had the intensity of the Cowal games. Maybe it was the inclusion of the world Scottish dance championships. Also fun is the Celtic Colours festival in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, a smaller version of Glasgow's Celtic Connections. 🙂
The stretch of coastline from Glenfinnan up to Mallaig is some of the best scenery in Britain. Taking the train from Fort William to Mallaig is spectacular.
@@ruthaisling It's been many years since i was there. I forgot it's peak summer over there. So used to the Asian school year after so many years out here. They're all back in school/college here in Manila!
Love attending Here in the USA. In spite of my many trips to scotland I have yet to be on time for any in Scotland. A curious note for USA versus Scotland events. In the USA they actually sell Swords and Dirks and such and many walk around wearing them. Also, it is ok to wear clan gear without being in that clan and half the people are in Royal Stewart! A no No in the Kingdom.
I grew up in Queensland, Australia, where Highland games were part of our annual fairs, along with the local agricultural shows etc. We went every single year. After Uni in the 1980s I lived in Tokyo for 2 years and in that time made a trip to Scotland where I went to the highland games in Drumnadrochit. It was so odd to be in Scotland hearing bagpipes making me homesick for Queensland! Later I moved to the USA and fairly recently, around 2015, I went to a massed clan gathering outside Seattle. The clans paraded together playing the same song on the bagpipes and it brought years to my eyes. You either love the bagpipes or you hate them and I love them!
It looked a lovely day out Ruth and all the tartan and pipes captured the fun of it. I haven't been to a Highland Games and can only say that as a lowlander Scot I'll need to make more of an effort. Think I need to get fit for the caber tossing. Thanks for sharing.
Oh wow! The dancing in the beginning reminds me of square dancing we learned in elementary school! The Scottish games looks like a lot of fun. Nice throw Ruth!! Very fun and interesting video! It’s so beautiful there. Thank you for this post!❤
We were in Morar a couple of weeks ago (it rained...). How fab to see the community coming together. I'm a dance teacher so it was smashing to hear from Maria.
Was lucky to be in Dunoon and saw the local Cowell Games in the mid-1980s. I remember the caber toss and the wonderful sounds of mass bagpipes. From Australia 🇦🇺
@@ruthaisling yep I really did now I have to find the next Highland Games that I can get to. Looked liked you had fun! Love the history of the Highland Games. Looked like you had fun with your interviewing skills. Such a high impact history in that area. Cheers. Troy
Another great video Ruth, you are right it is great scenery in Scotland and it brings back great memories of when I was growing up in the Stirling area.....
Here in Ontario, Canada we have several Highland Games each year, the best held in the small town of Fergus. Loved seeing ‘the real thing’ with your commentary and interviews. Sunday morning with my coffee, and a new video from Ruth. Perfect!
I was hitching and hiking round scotland last year and got a ride from Mallaig and Allan is the lead piper in your clip.He said their games was in two weeks time so I hitched all the back again from Tomintoul to volunteer. Was a great day, lively folk and a family feel. At the end of the night Colin the Games chairman asked Allan how he knew me ....and then him " if you find anymore hitchikers next year pick them up too". Been watching your channel a good while, brilliant.
@@ruthaisling 2nd try....Wasn't it a lovely weekend. They take the dancing so seriously. I helped put the stage up and put myself on portaloo attendent..no wonder I have been.invited back. What youre saying is you're a soft Southern Jessie even in Scottish terms Madam! 😁 Well at least you're not a soft southern Jessie from Yorkshire England like me and I'm such a soft southerner that I live in Surrey Greater London these days. I love engaging with the small Scottish part of my blood from the Kennedy Clan and Scotland is such a wonderful place to visit; specially since it doesn't necessarily require airports and getting on budget airliner flights.
@@ruthaisling As descended 1/16th from the Macrae, aye lassie ;-) What with clan intermarriage I am cousins to most of the clans going back to King James V and long before a'that.
I once saw Highland games in a village of which I can't remember the name. It was lovely, visitors wearing kilts and drinking whiskey. Young girls dancing, and bagpipe music. I'm a sucker for bagpipe music, the Black Bear is my forever favourite.
This brings back fond memories of the Pitlochrie games 15ish years ago. We have some games in New England (US) along with a mix of other Celtic events.
The first time I heard bagpipes I stopped dead in my tracks...I was so mesmorized! Long puzzeled by my reaction, I finally did what I'd put off doing, I did some genealogy via 23andMe. Much to my surprise - part of me not - I found out I have some Scottish genes in my mix. To this day bagpipes thrill me, especially when hearing "Scotland the Brave." I watched a YT video of 'The Black Watch' perform "Scotland the Brave" and, call me crazy, but it felt like mystical tears flowed. Thanks for sharing this video. Be well - many blessings. Cheers...
I saw you toss the lumber, I was worried. I was thinking becareful, don't hurt yourself, Ruth. that sure looks heavy, unless you're secretly a super hero, in which case you would've toss that darn thing all the way to America. lol
Great video Ruth, I’ve been to Malaig several times in our van but not when the “games” was taking place unfortunately. I’m playing catch-up with your channel 10/10, cheers Mike🍷👍
Its funny what seemingly random videos the internet throws at you when you least expect - I'm the adult Highland Dancer in pink in this video 😂 Glad you had fun at the games, gutted not to be going to Mallaig Games this year, after so many years in a row
Fantastic video Ruth, the drive through Glen Coe is one of my favourites. The road out to Malaig and Morar is lovely too, did you see you see the steam train? The west coast is also famous for the silver sands of Morar. I liked how young Byron knew he was just a novice and appreciated the help of the older athletes. Well done with your caber tossing attempt, you looked quite small next to the big athletes. Can you top this video? All will be revealed.
Thanks for your lovely comment Colin! The road out to Morar was amazing, the train wasn't running at the time I was there. I'll go back another time and film more from that area.
Great fun! Where we live in Ontario, Canada, there is a large popular of people from or with Scottish, Irish, English and Welsh heritage. There are quite a few Highland Games held across the province. There is one town near our city called Fergus and it is very Scottish. They host a wonderful highland games each summer and we've been a few times. I think it has been going for over 75 years. I did a quite search and they get over 25,000 people attending each year and I don't doubt it as it is always busy. Such a fun day out. Great music, food, heavy events and more. Well done with your "toss". The athletes make it look so easy, don't they.
That was fab, just long enough while I ate my supper, you are my evening viewing atm! Great interviews you are such a natural, why are the TV companies not chasing you! Selfishly I'm glad they aren't.....yet anyway!
Every set of views is just so inviting. Some of my ancestry is Scottish, but I'd be pants at those games, but with music (brass) background, maybe I could learn the bagpipes. 😂
I did a caber toss. I was not even close. my upper spine has never been the same. At least it went forward instead of falling on me. Farquharson from Cromarty by descent, grew up in Toronto.
Beautiful views of the Highlands. The sound made by bagpipes is one of my favorite sounds because it gives me a sense of nostalgia, similar to the oboe. The plaid pattern of the traditional costume kilt is now a familiar sight as the uniform of Japanese school girls, but this is where the origins lie, and you will be surprised by the beautiful variations of the plaid pattern. This festival looks like it will be lively and fun, like a Japanese sports day.
Thank you for watching, I'm glad you like the video. Do you know that song that plays in shops before closing time in Japan? That song is also from Scotland. The tune came from a famous Scottish poet called "Robert Burns"
Hi Ruth, we were there my wife and i in june, unfortunetly there was any famous scottish game in this time of year but anyway, we have enjoyed your gorgeous country and most of all the kindness of peoples. We’ d like to come back .
Hey Ruth, another lovely video. I live about 75 miles from Glasgow Kentucky, they have highland games every year, I've not been. It's on the bucket list though.
@@ruthaisling I did just a bit of TH-cam researching Scots in early settlement of Kentucky. Scots-Irish, (Ulster Scots) were very many of the pioneers to cross the mountains into the wilderness. Ran across another factoid, that more than 27 million US citizens today have Scots-Irish heritage. Also noted that american Bluegrass Music sounds like Scottish music without the pipes, and our "Clogging" dances likely evolved from the dancing shown in your video.
You'll probably not find it in literature, but the games were the only way to train for war. Everything thing was ban from the sword to the spear. By entering for the games it means the men could train and keep fit if evern needed for battle.
Ruth san, Thank you for nice video for Highland Games. I became to know the Highland Games are held at many place in Scotland. Before I thought they are held at Bramar near Aberdeen and INverness. Do you know The highland Games are held at Kobe, my city. So many people love Scotland and enjoyed the Hightland Games.
I think the big Highland Games is at Braemar. I didn't know about the Highland Games in Kobe, I would have gone if I'd known! Maybe I'll attend it in the future sometime
Ruth san .the Highland Games in Kobe were not held from 2021, because of Covid 19. I hope it will be held next year. The weather will become harder next month in Scotland. Night become more longer. It was hard for me, when I was in Scotland. To go Pab was nice at that time. Anyway please take care for your health.
So similar, my mum is Irish and I spend a lot of time in Ireland. I visited a Scottish island yesterday and it was so similar to some of the Irish islands in the west in Connemara that I really thought I could have been in Ireland.
A lot of those events were let die away in ireland for the simple reason 82000 won't pay to see them ,Even though the GAA are supposedly an amateur association.I love Hurling and Gaelic football but they could have hung on to these events or the organisation that took over athletics could have kept them but they concentrated on olympic events and there is nothing with that either irish athletes have brought great honour to the country but they could have hung on to more of the heavy events
@@gallowglass2630 I agree the heavy events are not in Ireland but I can assure you that GAA is alive and well 🙂 There's a couple of thriving clubs near us. It was mainly the piping and dancing I was thinking about, along with the many other family and cultural ties and similarities.
Hi Ruth, did ya look for the loch morra monster 🦕and did you check out the beaches on the coastal road there to arisaig ' a couple of my stops when I'm out and about 😍👍
That was me swimming in Loch Morar in the video! The road to Arisaig was mobbed with it being peak summer holidays. Couldn't even get parked. I'll go back another time when it's less busy!
Please visit Scotland sometimes to experience a Highland Games for yourself. Noodles like ramen is not a traditional dish in Scotland but you can find Japanese and Chinese restaurants in major cities and towns like Glasgow and Edinburgh. Be prepared to pay much higher prices for ramen than you would in Japan!

I like the added feature of the interviews 👍🏼
Thank you very much, Byron and Maria were very kind to give interviews!
Cheers...
Thank you, I like the sound of bagpipes too but not too close to my ear 😂
Nearby in Alma, Michigan, there is held a Highland Games, each year. I cannot account for authenticity, but it feels convincing.
You’re lucky to have that take place near you! I really enjoyed the games.
I saw you toss the lumber, I was worried. I was thinking becareful, don't hurt yourself, Ruth. that sure looks heavy, unless you're secretly a super hero, in which case you would've toss that darn thing all the way to America. lol
Haha, if only. It was actually quite difficult to throw it!
Great video Ruth, I’ve been to Malaig several times in our van but not when the “games” was taking place unfortunately. I’m playing catch-up with your channel 10/10, cheers Mike🍷👍
If you can coincide a trip to Mallaig when the games are on it'd be good!
Its funny what seemingly random videos the internet throws at you when you least expect - I'm the adult Highland Dancer in pink in this video 😂 Glad you had fun at the games, gutted not to be going to Mallaig Games this year, after so many years in a row
I had such a good time there! What a shame you’re not going.
Wow that sounds amazing and so many people attending! Haha yeah the toss was so much harder than it looks and I was using a kids log!
That was fab, just long enough while I ate my supper, you are my evening viewing atm! Great interviews you are such a natural, why are the TV companies not chasing you! Selfishly I'm glad they aren't.....yet anyway!
Thank you so much 😊
Great video really enjoyed it 🎉
Thanks so much!
Thanks Ruth
Thanks for watching!

Hello, l am from Greece, l am looking forward to see a football game with Scotland and England, battle of the titans...😊
I am born and raised in Scotland and nah the Scottish are the Titans/Giants. While he english are more wee Nanci’s
Hello Ruth mick from Hull another lovely episode hope you are well and I will look forward to your next episode xx 😊😊
Thank you Mick!
Every set of views is just so inviting. Some of my ancestry is Scottish, but I'd be pants at those games, but with music (brass) background, maybe I could learn the bagpipes. 😂
They would be a nice instrument to be able to play!
Good show, Thank you 👍
Thank you for watching!
One of my favourite films
That's so nice of you to say, thank you!
Great video as always, wondering the Scottish wilderness and all its beauty, your beauty show through as well.
Great info and voice over.
Thank you so much!
Another excellent video Ruth - hope one day to be able to afford and have time ( full time carer for mum) to be able to visit Scotland
Thank you, that’s very kind! Yes please do visit Scotland someday, I’m sure you’ll love it! ❤️
Hello Japan! From Milwaukee Wisconsin 🇺🇲🧀🍻
When to some games back in the70s when we were on holiday.
Brilliant!
I did a caber toss. I was not even close. my upper spine has never been the same. At least it went forward instead of falling on me. Farquharson from Cromarty by descent, grew up in Toronto.
It’s so much harder than it looks 😂
what would I do without your fantastic videos ? Don't wish to think about that.....................................
Thank you Leslie, that's so kind!
Mull of Kintyre ✨🎶😆💞💞
Hi Ruth, we were there my wife and i in june, unfortunetly there was any famous scottish game in this time of year but anyway, we have enjoyed your gorgeous country and most of all the kindness of peoples. We’ d like to come back .
I'm glad to hear you had a nice time! There might be a Highland Games event on the next time you visit!
Super video that informed lowlander like me. Going to be in Morayshire next month. Looking to get home
Fantastic, I hope you have a great trip!
77 years old, grew up in Scotland, and never been to a Highland Games. That has to be remedied soon. I have been missing out!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who hasn't / hadn't been to one. It reminded me a lot of gala days which I see a lot in other parts of Scotland!
Another great video Ruth, very interesting!
Thanks for watching Steve!
Love your videos Ruth... keep them coming!
Thanks Bill!
love from india......nice the way of explainand, good remarks all the things ,and u r so sweet and kind heart ...thank u
That's so nice of you, thanks for watching from India, I'd love to visit your country someday
Hey Ruth, another lovely video. I live about 75 miles from Glasgow Kentucky, they have highland games every year, I've not been. It's on the bucket list though.
Thanks Mark! I am surprised to hear there is also a Glasgow in Kentucky!
@@markrenfrow9873 Wow, that's so interesting and 27 million, that is incredible!!!
Get the dude in the Glenfidich vest! And he's a proper Scottish ginger as well.... which is what you want.
😂
You'll probably not find it in literature, but the games were the only way to train for war. Everything thing was ban from the sword to the spear. By entering for the games it means the men could train and keep fit if evern needed for battle.
Ruth san, Thank you for nice video for Highland Games. I became to know the Highland Games are held at many place in Scotland. Before I thought they are held at Bramar near Aberdeen and
INverness.
Welcome to my back yard hope you enjoy and explore more of it so much more the the NC500, feel free to get intouch for a tour ha ha
What’s fab place to live!!

Excellent video, there are many similarities between this and Irish culture. Hardly surprising when you think how close we are.
So similar, my mum is Irish and I spend a lot of time in Ireland. I visited a Scottish island yesterday and it was so similar to some of the Irish islands in the west in Connemara that I really thought I could have been in Ireland.
Generally yes not sure how you can see it from the highland games
A lot of those events were let die away in ireland for the simple reason 82000 won't pay to see them ,Even though the GAA are supposedly an amateur association.I love Hurling and Gaelic football but they could have hung on to these events or the organisation that took over athletics could have kept them but they concentrated on olympic events and there is nothing with that either irish athletes have brought great honour to the country but they could have hung on to more of the heavy events
@@gallowglass2630
I agree the heavy events are not in Ireland but I can assure you that GAA is alive and well 🙂
There's a couple of thriving clubs near us.
It was mainly the piping and dancing I was thinking about, along with the many other family and cultural ties and similarities.
Yes of course the GAA is thriving. The music part reminds me of a fleadh or feis here in ireland

I wonder if any of my ancestors ever competed, I hope so.
Ceilidhs are great fun, but a Strip The Willow in a confined space can be lethal! 😂
Glen Coe's a fantastic drive, isn't it?
Glen Coe was 😍 Haha yes, I remember when I was younger sometimes having bruises on my arms the next day
It's a good old Scottish festival.
I want to experience it once.
Is there food like ramen in Scotland?
Please visit Scotland sometimes to experience a Highland Games for yourself.
Noodles like ramen is not a traditional dish in Scotland but you can find Japanese and Chinese restaurants in major cities and towns like Glasgow and Edinburgh. Be prepared to pay much higher prices for ramen than you would in Japan!
A cute woman was doing the log throwing of the Highland game (^ ^)
It was harder than it looks!
I once saw a game where you pole vaulted across a river
Oh wow, that sounds really fun to watch! Was that in Scotland too?
The Netherlands? Friesland!🇳🇱🐄🧀
No, it happened when I went on a trip to the Netherlands. I think it's the same traditional game
Thats the netherlands i think ,i know the name but i can't spell it
That man with his hand down his misses bum at 11:58 though… poor view for you 😂
😂😂😀
