As a former Course Director of the Academy of Garden Design (Ireland, UK, Australia and the USA); I disagree with your rather blithe comments. The hard landscaping in this garden are sublime. The materials, the linkages through the yew hedges back up to where the house once stood - the epic terrace raised above the river…. This is a very special garden and your irreverence to it really says more about your gardening substance than it does about the garden itself. I’ve driven hundreds of miles to sit in this garden in peace and quiet. It’s absolutely beautiful.

Enjoyed the video. The garden doesn't look like someone loves it. It just sits there.

I agree with John's comment whole heartedly. I spent years studying Gertrude Jekyll and Marjorie Fish plantings and designs and they have stood the test of time and led the way for a lot of what we have today. The hardscaping alone could not be replicated by anyone but a multi millionaire by today's standards. Every house needs a great foundation and anyone really into good gardens would do well to study their ways and include them in what we do today. A lot of these principles have stood the test of time. I really enjoyed it.

I really loved it! I liked the Angels fishing pole plant, and the stone artwork was lovely. I liked the ancient look and how well kept and clean and manicured look to it!

What a wonderful and peaceful place. I love the turtle sculptures around the pond and the portholes on the wall. The entrance is very beautiful too. A beautiful place to visit. Thanks for sharing!

The gardens have beautiful symmetrical layers. I love the entrance, it just draws you in to discover what treasures hide behind the stone walls. Thanks for the tour.

I wouldn't have a garden like this. It' certainly looks nicer on a very sunny day.
However I enjoyed to have a look around. Thank you Rachel for sharing

Lutyens created a wonderful hardscape for Jekyll's plantings. I'm sure many of the plants she chose and how she used them were innovative at that time. ~ Yes we have an abundance of plant material nowadays. Unfortunately so many of the landscapes I encounter are poorly conceived. The most common problem is that they are too 'busy'. Using twelve different types of plants in a space where three would have been better suited. Design techniques that have met the test of time are ignored with detrimental results, in my opinion. While Heywood does lack a certain liveliness, it has the comforting, restful feel of a place where one could set out a lawn chair, novel and a cup of tea and relax on a sunny afternoon. Isn't that what gardens are for, after all?

Yes, it is quite impossible to judge an historical garden by modern standards.

Hey Rachel, I agree that the garden remains frozen in time, keeping true to its original design and form, and this would be great, were it some magnificent garden with spectacular displays of blooms and countless perennials, bushes and shrubs. But it's not..and it seems like a waste not taking this garden to its full potential, which in turn, I believe, would make it much more relevant in this day and age. Imagine what you could do with this place! They should take a page out of your book, literally...😆 Thank you for sharing, Rachel, as usual, a lovely experience. 😊

Well, I suppose the problem is that this was cutting-edge once upon a time. Now it is old fashioned. If a garden is maintained, it cannot move with the times.

I think this garden is magnificent, but the planting is tired and seems neglected. Needs some TLC but I would LOVE to have this garden and just refresh some of the planting to give it the new life it deserves.

It looks tired. As if the soil had been depleted and didn't give the plants enough nourishment to live up to their full potential. Too much bare ground showing through.

Better than sticking some ugly modern hybrid in the ground here and there and just hoping for something.
