    Bev, if you have a large [12 ounce] can of evaporated milk on hand; just add 1&1/2 c sugar to it, boil over med-hi heat, stirring constantly until sugar is dissolved; then take off heat and let cool. Easy peasy if you have no powdered milk on hand. This is my go-to method when I am out of condensed milk.

    This is good to know; thank you! When I was little I would steal a can of Eagle Brand Milk from my mom's pantry, open it, go hide somewhere & eat the whole thing. Then I would sneak down to the neighbor's & hide the can in their trash. I can still see her searching through her pantry saying "I could swear I had a Can of Eagle Brand in here." I was a brat.

      No you were not!! My brother and i did the same thing with the powdered milk we could get our hands on...And then we would pretend it just finished an someone forgot to buy...

    Brilliant as always!! I cannot tell you how many times I have not made a recipe because I did not have a can in my pantry. However I always have powdered milk because my mom taught me it was an essential. Thank you again Mrs. Volfie!!

      +Paul KK ditto on the powdered milk...my mom would mix it 1/2 in 1/2 when I was in grade school. Since I have been on my own, my house has always had powdered milk; just in case.

    I don't think I've ever used store bought as making it is so easy and made with more pure ingredients. One thing I did notice is its cheaper to buy if you only need a little. When making several cheesecakes to freeze making this amount is sure handy. I think mine only last about a week in the frig! Thanks for sharing!

    I make my sweetened condensed milk by just adding everything to my blender, hot water, sugar and milk powder and voila it is done. I'm glad I learned this skill, it has saved us allot of money over the years.

    What kind of instant milk do you use, how big is the can or bag in grams do you use and how many quarts would I be able to make with 900 gram can? Sorry for all the questions it's just that I am very low income and trying to figure out if it would be cheaper to make my own or buy it. I live in Alabama and sweetened condensed milk is almost $3.00's a can here.

      +keepercreek I would think it too dense for safely home canning. With all that sugar in it, it should keep a long time in the fridge. I think this would be easily halved also if you didn't need that much of it around.

    • @Moonstorm0551
      @Moonstorm0551 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @learningnewrecipes9540
      @learningnewrecipes9540 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Audrey M She said if you don't have instant milk powder you can use non instant milk powder. Not really sure what the difference between the 2 are.

    • @lynhanna917
      @lynhanna917 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LEARNING NEW RECIPES instant milk powder has been "fluffed" during processing so that it dissolves faster so any recipe that calls for 1 cup of non instant milk powder you would use 2 cups of instant milk powder. The reverse is true if a recipe calls for 2 cup instant you use 1 cup non instant. To rehydrate the non you are best to do a little sprinkled over the liquid, mix until dissolved and repeat until all is mixed. First time I used the non instant I dumped it in and I had one solid clump that I could not get to dissolve.
