Do NOT use WD 40 on these 6 Things!

  • Here are my TOP 6 Things to never use WD 40 on when working on a project, fishing reel, car, or DIY house hold item. WD 40 works great on somethings but we all know better in certain situations. There are usually better chemicals out there to use! There are always long term repercussions when putting chemicals on things.

If you're being attacked by a bear: spray WD40 on the bear's feet. The bear will slip giving you time to effect an escape.

#7 - don't use it on door hinges. It will remove the squeak momentarily, but it will get worse, a lot worse because any remaining oil/grease inside the hinges will be removed causing it to squeak even louder.

You forgot one Jack, don't use it around any fire, flame, or sparks. Years ago we had an old style coke machine that used electrical contacts in the change counter, some coke syrup had gotten into the changer and it wasn't working. My coworker sprayed the changer down with wd-40 and it cleaned it up nicely, but then he dropped a quarter into the machine and it practically blew the door off.

I spray it in AC condensers, let it sit for a while then turn on the AC fan mode only. The pull in air will suck in the build up into the unit and out the fan exit.

Bad knee. Had to walk a lot at work. Wore a tension bandage for years. Finally on an old mechanics advice from 20 years or so earlier, _ he said dont get that degreaser on your hands as it will pull the oils from your body joints and if you do wash your hands with wd40...it will fix your joints. So I soaked my tension bandage with wd40 as a desperate measure. My knee got warm and cozy and I never had pain for a couple of years after that one application TRUE STORY

Having made 100 of Thousands of gallons of WD-40 for years (it's the Debutanizer Bottoms, from CRU-3 at Texaco Refinery, Wilmington, Ca.) I CAN say it works on "some" things...like rust, sometimes! It will NOT conduct electricity (it's a Dielectric Liquid), and doesn't freeze at -40 Degrees (C. or F.)...!
We would ship tank cars of the stuff down to Rocket Research Laboratories, in San Diego, Ca.. (Now known as the WD-40 Company!)
(But I know SOME people that spray a rag with the stuff and "wipe-down", to keep mosquitoes away!) Yes, it really does stop the itching from bug bites! Haha!

Sorry to respond to a 1+ year old comment, but I must ask as you have the expertise in this. I have a leaky garage roof. Rain water is dripping on one of the wooden beams. Have used silicon to help plug the holes until I can get it sorted properly (it's where the screws are located, the rubber caps above on the roof must have perished). Could I spray WD40 on the wooden beam for now just to give me piece of mind? Would this help to prevent the wood from absorbing the water this preventing rot as this would simply displace the water away from the wood (as the name implies)? Many thanks.

Its better than goo gone for removing sticky residue and it will melt burnt rubber off chrome Harley exhaust (works great btw!), it also great for removing road tar (do not rub, just spray, soak with a rag, spray again, it will eventually just liquify. Again, do not rub against a painted surface for obvious reasons. Works on squeaky door hinges, squeaky anything. Some guys soak soft plastics with it - haven’t heard any scientific results either way.

I put WD40 on iron powder in an Erlenmeyer flask to use as a ferrofluid and after playing with it for about 10 minutes, the liquid started developing a burgundy colour. My best guess is that the WD40 dissolved any existing rust from the surfaces of the powder, colouring the liquid portion wet, darkened rust and thus burgundy colour. Any thoughts anyone?

Here is some trivia about WD-40. WD stands for water displacement. It has many ingredients, but basically it is "lard oil" and "kerosene". We used to use lard oil and kerosene for cutting Aluminum in the machine shop. When WD-40 come out we switched to that instead. Same stuff. No we never had any fires in the shop.

I can attest that it protect many kinds of plastics (even soft ones) without any troubles on long term. Perhaps that there is troubles with some particular plastics (like the latex with balloons), but not with all plastics.

I just need an opinion on something. I've used wd40 to clean and fix scratches on cds, with great results. Some preowns are like good as new now. The only problem is it attracts a bit of dust after a while that I have to wipe it again before playing one. I've read that wd40 shouldn't be used on polycarbonate because of hydrocarbons in the oil, they "break down" polycarbonates, and cds are made with polycarbonate plastic. I haven't found any real examples that this is the case and it just sounds like a theory. Has anyone had any experiences with this? I've read about skip doctors but they seem a bit overhyped for the cost.

using wd-40 on plastic parts is very good. it makes the plastic bendable and it doesn´t crack. it makes the plastic softer so be aware how tight u tighten yous screws into it, you may strip...

Wd-40 and fishing...bad idea. Catch a fish, cook it, ingest chemicals....not good.
