Sabot Slugs vs Rifled Slugs | Does it Make a Difference?

  • Sabot Slugs vs Rifled Slugs | Does it make a difference? Rifled slugs are meant to be shot through smooth-bore shotguns and Sabot slugs through rifled shotgun barrels. If you are big game hunting with a shotgun, does it really make a difference what route you go? Does it matter if you shoot a rifled slug through a rifled barrel or a sabot through a smooth bore? We had just received the new Federal Freight Train Sabot Slugs so this was a perfect opportunity to hit the range and find out.

    My daughter wanted to try her hand at deer hunting. After she passed her Hunter Safety course, I bought her a Mossberg 500 in 20ga. It came with field and rifled bbls. I mounted a 1x-6x LPVO on it. That thing is a tack driver. Daughter figured out it got too cold during WI deer hunt so she quit after a few sits. Daddy now has a sniper shotty.

    When I bought my rifled slug barrel for my remington 870 it came with instructions that said it was made for optimum performance with remington slugger rifled slugs. At 50 yards it shot dead on. There was some coarse lead fowling but it cleaned out easily with a brush. Cheap and accurate so I never felt the need for expensive sabot slugs

    Rifled slugs wont hurt a rifled barrel. Its old fuddlore. Think about it, soft lead .38s dont damage a levergun. The lead is simply too soft to damage anything. You might get more lead fouling than you're use to, but ill take lead fouling over plastic fouling any day.

    Great video, this was something I've been curious on. Also, Kentucky Ballistics recently did a video that had similar results with the wad ended up penetrating like this. Under slow motion, you could see that a close range, the wad was still following the slug so closely that the temporary wound channel opened up by the slug allowed it to just follow along into the block.

    Hi Steve, This is about 20 years ago. My wife and I have Remington 11-87's. I bought her a fully rifled barrel right away for it and a scope that was attached to the barrel. Her parents bought me a barrel for slugs but it wasn't rifled, It did have a rifled choke. I got a scope on a B-Square mount, I think that is what it was called. My wife was to cheap, god I hope she doesn't read this, to buy the sabot rounds that were designed for her gun so we always both shot the same 2 3/4 Remington "pumpkin balls". Both shot about 3" groups at 50 yards, and about 4-5 inches at 100. She used that for about 15 years until I convinced her to switch to a muzzleloader. If you can use those where you are, I highly recommend them, they are crazy accurate and you can easily shoot 200 to 300 yards. If you can get a savage that shoots smokeless that is even better. I have one of those, I use smokeless and can shoot about 50 rounds before cleaning and it is super accurate. Anyway, good luck this season and I love the channel.

    I’ve been using a Remington 20 gauge 870 express mag with a 24” rifled barrel with 3” Remington accutips for about a decade now. I’ll never shoot a smooth bore with rifled slugs again. I killed many deer with rifled slugs and a smooth bore, but it’s not even close to damage and patterning compared to a rifled barrel with a sabot round. Great video, confirms my life experience.

      I wonder how devastating a full size slug designed to expand like a sabot would be.

    Good Stuff Steve, thanks for the informative vid!! I live in Iowa, and haven’t purchased a straight-wall rifle yet so I’m still shooting slugs. I know I’m not comfortable shooting rifled slugs through my 870 bird barrel much past 50 yards, but I can shoot Remington copper Sabots through the rifled barrel on my Mossberg 500 out to 100 yds reliably. I know my uncle has killed deer past 100 yards with rifled slugs through the rifled barrel of his 870 slug gun, but he also has a 4-8 power rifle scope attatched.

    As for rifle slugs, they make them today a little bit under bored to make them safe for medium and full chokes. This is why they aren't accurate. There are older guns with fixed chokes, sometimes shooters forget to change chokes to imp. cyl.
    I use smooth bore slug barrel with fixed choke 0.695 constriction, and it is as accurare as sabot.

    Steve you have to know the rifling on the rifled slug does not do whay you think,
    Foster slugs are made stable by their weight distribution, by beeing nose heavy they don't need spin to be stable,
    What we call rifling on those slug is there to make them safer to shoot throught a choke
    You also have to know that all foster slugs are not equal on penetration, the ones you had are pretty much jacketed and won't expand and penetrate very well, that make them a good choice for something like bear defence, but they are not the most popular foster slugs, a lot of them are made of pure lead and are going to expand violantly and will penetrate a lot less
    I think you should do a follow up video to show your audience that type of foster slugs too

    go watch some high speed videos of rifled slugs in smooth bores. What it really does is allow the rifling to conform to different size bores and help improve overall performance. If you notice there is a ring at the back that creates a gas’s seal and the rifling helps keep it centered in the bore. In order for a rifle slug to spin in a smooth barrel it would have to cut into the barrel to generate that spin. If a bullet(most bullets) that is designed to fully engage a rifle barrel doesn’t ruin a barrel. Then why would a slug (rifles slug) that makes even less contact? there’s a lot of misinformation regarding shotguns.

      Generally smooth bore barrels don't have iron sights on them, but you are correct. It is flat out easier to aim with iron sights on a rifled barrel vs a bead on a smooth bore.

    Rifled slugs were actually designed to crush down to fit through different sized chokes before interchangeable chokes became a thing and they added the twist to the rifling to help with aerodynamics and bullets flight but the rifling is made of soft lead to crush down to fit through a fixed full choke so it won’t hurt to shoot it through a rifled barrel you’ll just need to spend extra time cleaning it

    Rifled slugs. The rifling is to allow the slug to compress through a choke, not for rotation. The shock wave coming off the nose prevents any air induced force on the rifling. It's common misconception.

    The rifling on the slugs is NOT there to impart spin, and usually does not do so, its there so the slugs can compress when going thru a choke or choked barrel.

    • @harrypeterson9287
      @harrypeterson9287 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      If that were the intention, why not have straight grooves on the slug? Taofledermaus proved that they do in fact spin. With a modified choke I can hit a paper plate at 100 yards, with the cylinder bore tube they're all over the place at 100.

      @harrypeterson9287 That's interesting, my shotgun with a cylinder bore shoots great?? I can put 5 slugs on a paper plate at 100 yards, it probably helps my shotgun has front and rear sights? Idk and the slugs on taufledermaus did spin, like I said usually they will not. I can find plenty of high speed video to prove my point as well. And the groves in the slugs are there for compression not to impart spin, if they do great, but the shape and weight forward design of the slugs is what actually stabilizes it in flight, not spin. And I have no idea what your talking about spoomer? I know this from actual facts, not anecdotal evidence that occasionally they will spin some, for the most part they DO NOT SPIN look into it, there is way more film of them not spinning, in fact the only reason I said that they MIGHT was because of that tauflader video, because of the dozens of high speed videos I've seen that is the ONLY one where spin is imparted. Look then come back and tell me I'm wrong, I'll wait.

    • @wymonwatson1309
      @wymonwatson1309 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @craigparker4108 Never saw whatever your talking about, contact a manufacturer or better yet watch 10 videos of slugs leaving a smooth bore barrel, the only time I've ever seen a slugs spin was one taufleder video, all the rest I can find there is no spin, also they are designed to fly stable with NO SPIN STABILITY. Go watch some more videos, one video is anecdotal 10 is evidence.

    • @wymonwatson1309
      @wymonwatson1309 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      These rifling grooves were mostly cosmetic, as they did not really impart much spin to the slug at all as it went through the barrel. A recent video was done that shows that the rifled slugs do indeed have some rotation, but it is very little and probably does not actually do much regarding accuracy. The main purpose, other than making the customer "feel like" his slugs would spin, was to allow the slugs to be swedged through any size choke. The manufacturers of the slugs could not know for sure what choke would be used by the customer, so they put these grooves on the slugs to allow them to swedge through any normal choke."

      Yes, was about to say the same thing. The stability comes from its front end weight design etc. Also omitted here is the type of choke used as it makes a difference. Cylinder or 1/4 are the 2 best options. Anything else can affect the accuracy of a rifled slug.

    On full pass through vs captured in the animal it really all depends on use. Thin skinned lightly haired animals like deer, I'll can go either way just depends what bullets I want to use. But, something furry like a bear that will soak up blood and make it hard to trail in dense wet timber like here in AK I want 2 holes. The exit holes always bleed more than entrance holes as far as I've seen so a pass through is better in my mind. As well in said situation I prefer low on body shots so blood isnt pooling and filling the cavity when at the onset and instead is going on the ground. I figure its like a 5 gallon bucket spilling red paint, would you prefer the trail made by a hole near the top of the bucket or one in the bottom of the bucket from where the animal was standing when you shot? 🤷‍♂️😆
