Please check out my playlist for psychology students. 99.9% of the questions I have received have been answered in this video, so please make sure you watch the full video. Also, check out this playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLTeQHQpDwnGYMmGIrZjpV7_KBH3zZBzhz.html Also, the main question that continues to come up is: What degree should I have to move forward? It is not about the degree, it is about the pre-requiste from the grad school you want to attend so start there.
This was super informative! I’m 27 years old, single, with no kids. I’ve been out of undergrad for almost 6 years and I’m finally at a point in my life where I know exactly what it is that I want to do. I’m motivated than ever now and now it’s time to be about it n stop talking about it! Thank you so much ❤
This was so good. I'm currently 28 years old, married with 3 children. I've waited all of this time to realize what I truly want to pursue and willing to do whatever it takes to get there. Thank you so much for this very informative, clear video!
I’m going into my graduate program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Today I had my first day and I went through some roller coaster of emotion figuring out what I really wanted to do. Watching this now is really helpful. You explained everything so well and it actually gave me more information on my upcoming steps in my career. Thank you so much for putting out your knowledge and helping out the community in more ways than one!
Im 15 in high-school and even tho based on my country i see no current path for this career i wanna takes notes so i can have a clear goal set.this video was the best choice❤
You are an inspiration! I'm very interested in psychology, and would love to work with children/families. This video helped me get started with my career. Thanks babes!!!!
So HAPPY I came across your vid. Motivating & Inspirational🙌🏼 Got my AA degree in 2016' and have always been drawn to the field of Psych. At 42 yrs young, I'm now looking into 4-year programs to FINALLY start on my undergrad🤗Many Blessings🙏🏼
I’m so happy that i stumbled upon your video! I’ve been debating what route of further education i wanted to take. I have a bachelors but did not know the steps for psych programs! Grateful for your info!
Thank for sharing your knowledge and experience. I will definitely be following your channel, as I prepare myself to embark on this journey in the next couple years.
I am currently applying for college as I am a senior this year, and I did an early college program at my highschool so when I graduate I will earn my AA in Psych and the Arts. I am excited to jump into a school where I can just do my major classes and focus early on. Watching your videos really motivates me and helps me understand where I am going in life.
Thank you for making this video! I'm 30 years old, will be 31 in a few months and I felt so weird finally deciding to go to college at such a late start. I don't have any kids. I worked corporate for 10 years and I just know in my heart it's not what I want long term. I went to nursing school when i was 21 but I did't like it so I stuck to corporate. I'm just now starting my prerequisites this summer and I feel so far behind. But I am excited for this new journey I am on.
I love your video, and I just started. It resembles what I would like to do. I always wanted to work with children, and since I have also been diagnosed with depression and anxiety. I would like to become a clinical phycology, and my career path will be a PsyD program because I do not like much research. I would like to focus more on child adoslescent therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and so on. I would like to do my dissertation to be able to be called Dr. Paola Frias. I am also in nursing school and would like to have my private practice in a future to come. ❤ I hope God can give me the strength that I need to accomplish my dream.
So happy that you were inspired by the video. Stay tuned in. I post mostly content about those who are already in the field, but I know that it is an inspiration for up and rising therapist and psychologist in the field.
Thank you so much, the presentation was informative and clarified many aspects of the differences between a PsyD and a Ph.D. Could you please discuss becoming a PhD researcher and pursuing a clinical psychology license afterward? Thank you!
I always say start with the end goal in mind. I would start with looking up what type of researcher you want to be potentially, and then compare that to the clinical services that a PsyD program could provide. A PhD can also provide clinical services, but it depends on how you want to be taught in your doctoral program in terms of the main focus. Because I did not do a research base program, I cannot speak to what is included. I just knew that I wanted to primarily focus on providing clinical and therapeutic services, therefore I chose the PsyD program. Keep in mind I still had to do a dissertation before I graduated and take multiple stats and research courses.
This was super helpful. I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I see Pedatric patients for med management, therapy, and psychiatric evals. I need to be able to complete psychological exams for a number of my patients. So I’m debating on this additional degree. Thank you for the info.
Hi Dr TK, I'm 63 and sort of retired. I'm thinking of maybe starting a 2nd career. My original career was as a Silicon Valley software engineer but I'm burned out on that. I noticed about myself that when talking to friends about their problems, I try to delve into and really understand what's going on so that I can help them. It is natural for me to really probe them in order to come up with solutions. Do you think at my age, I could have a 2nd career? It's not so much about the money for me since I'm somewhat stable right now (although extra cash never hurts). Also, I have a PhD in computer science. Do I need to do another dissertation in order to get a PhD in psychology or would grad work + training be enough? (I'm leaning towards PsyD) I would definitely appreciate hearing your point of view!
Thank you so much for the information. It has given me a sense of direction and the steps included. Will there be a video about how to form a dissertation?
Thank you. I don’t go over the dissertation process but one of my clients that’s also a psychologist has dissertation services. Check her out on Instagram. instagram.com/p/C-Xp8dZos35/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Hi, I'm a 40yr old home maker. I had master's degree in Computer science but chose to stay home to look after my son(he is 10yr old). My questions are: 1. Is it practical to become a psychologist at this age? 2. If I start my undergraduate degree now, can I balance my maternal role and study? 3. If we get to work as a psychologist, can we balance work and family? How stressful it is? Sorry if these questions are bothersome !! Trying to figure out!!
Yes. At any age, it's possible if you have the mindset of unwillingness to commit to the process. And it is a process. In my cohort when I graduated, some people were younger than me and twice my age. In terms of managing the maternal roll, I believe that is based on your support system and how you choose to set up your class schedule, internship hours when it comes, and receiving support in your household when needed. Everyone's circumstances are different. However, I went to school with plenty of women who were single parents that had children and/or were married. They managed to go to school and take care of their children. Some may even change to slow down the process in the program if personal matters get in the way. But they had a no excuse approach. I can't answer question number three because it depends on where you work. It also depends on how you define balance. What do you want your schedule to look like? This may determine where you choose to work. Also note that some jobs are great, but some people may want to create their own business, which means you are not an employee. But starting a business also takes time. School, a career, and business are a marathon. I do not have a one-size-fits-all answer because everyone's situation is very different.
Hi I’m 24 years old making the decision to return to college I want to work with children being that the early development is where it all starts. I aim to make it better before it gets worse this video is very helpful in my Decision making
Hello ❣️ I’m new to your channel! I’m about to embark on my PsyD program. What school did you attend? I have an end goal in mind, but need someone in the field to discuss my business plan with. I’m in California 🤗
Great day. The school I attended was a professional psychology school that’s no longer open. A lot of the schools closed during the pandemic because they were for profit versus a traditional for your university which are typically harder to get in and they are Phd not psyd. The biggest thing is to make sure that your school that you graduate from is APA accredited
Oh this is such a great question as it does depend on what school you want to teach at. Some schools are very selective but they may not disclose this. I think it’s time for a part 2 of this video. 😁
Man I kick myself in the rear everyday. My dream was become a psychologist since I was Young. When I moved to United States I was taking an ESL class and I still remember today as was yesterday when I told my teacher my dream. Now I am older I understand he did not mean any thing bad, but I was only 17 at that time. He said to become a psychologist you need to have a PHD. I don’t know why I took it as he told me I was not capable of obtaining a PHD. When I went to College I took psychology as one one of my Elective. I enjoy every minute of that class. I went on and got my MBA. I am super grateful I have a job but is not what I want to do😢 I am 45 and I feel I let my worries hinder me from achieving my dreams😢
Wow. What a testimony that you still rised up. Continue to operate in your genious zone and if the spirit calls integrate your love for psychology with your mba. Check out organizational psychology
Hello my dear. I am 47 and I am about to embark on this new journey of pursuing a PhD in clinical psychology. My undergrad degree is in Psychology but I became a teacher and my ex husband always discouraged me from going back to uni. Well here I am at 47, single mum of two teens taking on this new challenge, and I am feeling so good about it. Anything is possible. 🙂
I am in similar boat. I have masters in marketing and been working in hospitality sales all my life but I crave psychology. I don’t want to waste all knowledge I have in business and I’d like to combine both. Not sure how to do it yet
Please 😢dont feel bad. I'm 43 and my dream is to become a clinical psychologist if not that a license psychologist. I will not give up nor should you still😤 give up!!! When it comes to learning no age limit nor when it comes to helping others, as you would be doing in your dream field in psychology🤗.
Hello, thank you so much for the video ❤ What should I minor in with a major in psychology? I'm looking to become a clinical psychologist. It's a toss-up between biology, neuroscience, and business.
I just graduated with my MA in Human Services Counseling in Crisis Response and Trauma and just discovered that my degree isn’t compatible the VA’s LPC requirements. Now I’m looking to pursue my PhD but am unsure what to get it in because I want to counsel children/adolescents, adults, and within corrections 😭
Thanks for outlining the difference between the PsyD and PhD. I want to switch careers and become a therapist. I’d like to work with University students.
Thank you and yessss love working with students. I’m preparing for September content. What specific questions do you have. I was a professors for 20 years and my students loved chats like a case study of what grad school is REALLY like. Let me know.
Wow. What grade level do you teach? And what questions do you have about becoming a psychologist beyond the video? I’ll be doing a Q and A soon to this video.
Hello. Thank you for the video. However, can you guide me that I am an international student and my goal is to be an adult psychologist can you please guide me on what should be my choice of program? Also any idea if there are any funded Psy.D program?
Thank you for your comment! It's great to hear that you're interested in becoming an adult psychologist. When choosing a program, I would recommend looking for universities that offer psychology programs with a focus on adult psychology. It's also important to consider factors like the program's accreditation, faculty expertise, and available research opportunities. As for funded Psy.D programs, they do exist, but they are less common compared to funded Ph.D. programs. It's worth researching and reaching out to universities directly to inquire about any available funding options. Good luck on your journey! Here is also a playlist I created: th-cam.com/video/Zt0Y6XZmjsg/w-d-xo.html
Hello, I just started my Psyd program. My goal is to be able to do Psychological Evaluations and assessments. Would I be able to do this once licensed?
Once you are licensed, and you have clinical supervision hours in that area, then yes. This area will require a level of expertise that you can do on your own beyond supervision. I would highly recommend that if you want to do evaluations, find experience and internship sites that will allow you to do evaluations.
I do not. Much like US programs, any transferrable credit would need to be approved from a specific institution. For example, when I transferred into the psychology doctorate program, I either have to test out of the course in order to keep the credits or I had to choose to turn in a lot of paperwork and go through a rigorous interview for specific courses to waive the credit as transferable. Some courses, I decided just to take the class over because I knew I did not retain enough information for my masters program for it to be transferable into the doctorate program. Hope this helps. :)
Your video was so helpful, every question that I have been asking you was able to answer. One question I was wondering is can you be a Psychologist and a psychiatrist at the same time.
They are two different degrees. Psychiatrist has a medical school degree and specializes in psychology. Psychologist have a doctorate in psychology and focused More on either research or services.
Thank you so much ma'am for this video. currently I m doing my bachelors in Applied psychology. Actually this is my 02nd degree. But i m 30 now is it too late to be psychologist. Just after my bachelors i m planning to do my masters too. Course being a clinical psychologist is my big dream
Hello. Thank you for great video. And I have a question. I am 33, and I started I interested in to become a psychologist or am I too "old" starting education?
Hello. Thanks for the very informative video. If I'm 30 going into grad school. How long will it take for me to become a licensed clinical psychologist?
I would like to know if once you get a license to practice clinical therapy, could you personalize your sessions with clients like going out in nature, doing hikes/runs, etc or are you stuck in a room setting?
Private pay, yes but of course your documentation and office policies have to match this. I walked around the park with clients but keep in mind their definition of confidentiality and what you can actually do with them in those environments to ensure they can still open up. Insurance may be tricky as certain panels may dictate when and how services look.
Ma'am, you are a hero! Currently in an accelerated bachelors in communications program with a focus in Psych. My advisor told me I can potentially go for my PsyD with this degree, however there are no physical schools near me that offer the graduate program. Do you know if an online program through an accredited APA school would be just as resourceful? Thank you!
It all depends on your end goal. Start with the end goal in mind. Research what job or business you want and position and what it requires. Sometimes it’s the curriculum at the school and sometimes it doesn’t matter.
I am 22 rn . This is me before watching the video. I am a bachelors deep into psychology. And at this pojnt just need help finding the gut tk apply to cljnical psych program hopefuly phd program. This is my 1st gap year and already i am stressing since i have no rec letter but im volunteering at my uni lab and a possible letter source from a professor and one from active minds But im not in school anymore....so yeah...i will comment here after i watcb this video
You can have any degree so long as you take the psychology course pre-reqs the programs ask for. It differs slightly for each program but in general classes like stats, abnormal psych, lifespan psych, and personality or social psych are ones you need to take.
Hi Dr. Tk! Thank you for the informative video and inspiring me in my ability to embark on this journey. My journey is I have a B.S. in Biology and a Masters in Teaching and Education. I am transitioning from a teacher to psychology. Do you think it is possible for me to be accepted into a doctorate program or would I have to get another Masters in Psychology before getting my PHD? My goal is to help a population of adults with mental disorders such as hoarding, OCD, or depression. Thank you!!
Your very welcome and best wishes on the future! Our field is so diverse! You can do so much! Anything is possible but you do want to check out the requirements for the program. I created an entire playlist for students and one of the videos is what to consider before applying to grad school: th-cam.com/video/Zt0Y6XZmjsg/w-d-xo.html
Hello I am 36 and my dream has always been to become a psychologist, I just moved to United States and I wonder if there’s any good online option??? Thank you so much
I never believe it’s too late. It more about are you committed to the process. Something to consider is how long it will take and can you focus during the time period to get everything done to accomplish your goals.
For clinical work outside the country you would need to be licensed. Once licensed you can always check the country intended on working and your board of Licensure and they will let You know what is permitted.
Hello Dr. TK I am back to school to complete my BA degree in clinical psychology. My goal is to complete my Doctorates. I would like to work in the field now to become acclimated with the field and earn living at the same time. Would you have any advice, if any, where I may seek employment while still in school? Thank you for your advice.
Thanks so much for watching the video. I would highly recommend to work in environments that mirror, the type of clients that you want to work with. For example, I knew I wanted to work with teenagers, so I sought employment in group homes, or school settings. Even if I’m not doing therapy, I just want to be around the population.
I have a question I have a doctorate in divinity but I have a masters in MFT but I wanted to add to being a clinical psychologist would I have to go back to school?
Hi Dr. TK! I will be going into a master's program this coming fall which is a research based psychology program. I was wondering if this route can still lead me to a career path of a sport psychologist/clinical psychologist concentration with a potential psychology based research master's degree?
To become a clinical psychologist requires a PHD or PSYD so check with the doctorate program you may want to attend beyond a masters degree and ask them what they would recommend for a masters program (meaning will your program serve as a good pre-req program) or will you need to take additional courses.
As an undergraduate student hoping to obtain my bachelors degree in Psych, after the doctorate/Phd programme and licensure, do you think its necessary to get a postdoc? My goal is to have my own clinic and its seems like you can easily get lost in the weeds of degrees.
You do not need a doctorate degree to have a clinical practice. But you do have to be licensed (masters or doctorate). If your masters program leads into licensure, then you will need help growing in building a business because that is definitely not taught in school. Also if you would like to do psychological testing, you would need to have a doctorate. It really depends on what type of work do you want to do in the field that would determine what type of program you enter after your bachelors. But you have to be licensed to have your own clinical practice.
I hope you see this comment I could really use some advice. I am 32 years old and have a BS in Health Science. I have been deciding if I want to go back to school and have started looking into psychology ever since my youngest child has gotten diagnosed with ASD. I am already a little nervous about the time frame it takes to finish a program but I do not want to discourage myself. However, I do not know exactly how to go about the path I want. I want to do pediatric psychology potentially working with children in hospitals on many different wards rather that’s ICU or other. I am not sure what route to take and I can only find things about child psychology online but it does not exactly align with what I want to pursue. Please help if possible.
One way is to actually go to TH-cam and type in pediatric or child psychologist and see if you can find people that have talked about the journey. I would highly encourage you to focus on content that has been published at least in the last three years if not the last 12 months. I always say to work backwards. Find someone who is doing what you want to do in working in the environment that you want to work in. And then see if they are willing to talk to you
Thanks so much for the enlightenment. However I have a question, that urgently needs answers. Can I pursue a Psy.D with a B. Sc in Biochemistry: Or do I have to do a masters first?
Hi Dr., I am finishing my last internship for my M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I am now wanting to pursue Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology. I wanted to make sure I understood your statements; does the program mainly consist of in the field practice (practicum and internship)? I have been trying to find in depth information over if the curriculum is taking a lot of classes or in the field training.
It really depends on the program. Most programs have a mixture of both, but the practicum can start at any time. For example, my practicum started in my second year and third year. We apply for internship and complete that in our fourth year. We did not have any coursework in the fourth year outside of completing our dissertation. Then you collect the rest of your hours for licensure after you graduate and then sit for the licensing exam.
Please see my psych student corner. There are videos on things to consider before going to grad school. Psychology Students Corner th-cam.com/play/PLTeQHQpDwnGYMmGIrZjpV7_KBH3zZBzhz.html
I see you’re replying to a lot of people so hopefully I get one too… like most I always wanted to do psychology… however I never switched my major. I have a bachelors in business admin. I am 30. And I just signed up for community college for an associate in psychology. I’ll be finish next year because most of my credits were accepted from my 4 yr university… I planned to get a masters then maybe a doctorate… but from what I’m seeing a doctorate is needed. I’m just wondering your suggestions I mostly want to work with adult, marriage, family. Wouldn’t mind kids either though.
It really depends on what you want to do at the end. If you want to apply my method of working backward, and I can create a video for this, I would highly recommend that you decide specifically what you want to do five years from now, then take a look at what are the requirements to get a job like that and/or create a business to serve that population in years after. Then decide which degree will help you obtain that goal. That's how I decided to become a clinical psychologist and get my doctorate degree. I initially went to the Masters program, however there is no license for a masters in clinical psychology. But there are other plenty of masters programs that would suffice. The doctorate degree helped me do testing which I loved along with secure certain positions at jobs when I first went to school. I originally did not go into a doctoral program because it "pays" more. These days, a masters with good marketing can get you paid. Let me know if this helps :)
This was such great info. I'm entering this field brand new at 39, no degree. Does it make sense to get started in this field? It seems like I may have missed my mark 😢
I was in the program with a wide range. It’s more about knowing your why related to a doctorate degree. Some do it for a specific job, option to do testing and some do it just for the title. Pick your option wisely based on being able to fully use you degree. Meaning are you all in to finish. Including licensure.
It depends on the program that you wish to attend and what their policies are on admissions. You would have to contact the program directly. Not all programs have the same entry requirements. I also just posted a video on the graduate school application process. Go check it out
I did not. I worked on the weekends for retail and on campus for a few hours. During your 2nd year, there are multiple classes and you are required to work 16 hours for practicum and study.
I worked full time but not until my last year of course work. It’s possible but really hard; I had full time course work, 16-20 hours of practicum each week, full time job, AND was part of my campus’ student government….because I’m a masochist 🫠
Yes but I would highly recommend researching the curriculum and your end goals for psychology. That will determine which type of program you should consider. During the application process, I make sure to visit the campus and talk to professors that I would have 10 sure that it was a good match with my future goals
Yeah it's quite possible though it depends on the country you're, I have a degree in Educational Psychology Guidance and Counseling. But I focus more on another course, what country are you?
I have my Masters in Marriage and family therapy I am currently a Doctoral student in Advance studies in human behavior. Do I need to do a internship as a psychology
It depends. You have to check your program for what they require in terms of an internship. But to become a licensed provider in your state, the state board dictates how to accumulate those hours and how many hours you need. Every state is different which is why I don't go into detail on this video.
Hello I am your newbie subscriber! I have a question: is it possible for me to start my Pshychology career even tho i can't understand my own self. It's just, I want to help others so that they will prevent to become like me of who I am right now.
I firmly believe that you will learn about yourself in school as 50% or more of the papers you will have to write will be about your own reflections or it will come up as you are learning about the theories or tools. School for me was a reminder that we are all human and have different walks of life. We all should seek help when needed otherwise we shouldn’t tell others to do so. But never expect to be perfect to serve. We are human. Give yourself grace. 💗.
Great question. We have a full program that covers this but it does depend a n a variety of thing like niche, location, payment accepted, back office set up and honestly mindset and tenacity to get it done. Stay connected by heading to www.doctortk.com/links and get on my list through our freebie library. We will notify you when our free training comes back in January.
A Masters in clinical psychology vs Lpc are different. Lox allows you to practice while the other is a dead end. Hence a doctorate is required to practice. If your goal lpc follow the school and board requirements
4 years. Year 1-3 was coursework, practicum and dissertation writing and research. Year 4 was full time internship. They had a 5 year track which most programs do and now make it mandatory for students to finish dissertation stages before Internship as that was the biggest roadblock .
Glad I found this channel just wanted to reach out and see if Doctor TK has any advice for someone wanting to transition into the Mental Health Counseling/therapist field as well as pursue a PHD in the future...Disclaimer I currently have an Associates in emergency action from the Air force, Bachelor of Criminal Justice and a Master's in Administration Justice and security.... currently residing in Maryland. Really confused on the start of the process especially since I'm 31 married with two children, has anyone worked full time while completing the practicum and internship?
Great day. My friends did. It really depends on the schedule of internship, your home schedule and remembering that it’s temporary. Every year may be a different site. It also depends on the population. For example, while at high schools I was off during the summer months. I’ve seen people transition. I would start a year ahead of time reviewing school requirements just in case.
Hi , this video was super informative, when going to school for psychology to become a licensed psychologist but work with children is there a program that has childhood psychology or I can get my doctorate degree in general psychology and then I choose to work with children? I’m super confused. Thank you
Great day and congratulations on all your endeavors thus far. It truly depends on who you want to work for. Even if you doit temporarily. I always suggest that students work backward and look at the jobs or placements that you want to go to, and then look at what are their requirements for the degree. For example, my program was within clinical psychology, but I was still able to work within a school, but not for the school district. I worked for an agency that had a contract with a school district. So it truly depends on who you want to work with or for
Currently 32 going on 33 years old is it too late for me to become a psychologist? I feel that way because by the time I done with school I’ll be in my 40s
I’ve seen a variety of age groups and circumstances go through school. Are you committed to Finishing the marathon is the right question I would ask myself. Everyone’s capacity is different.
Great day. Can you be more specific with your question? Are you looking for career tips or can you go to graduate school with the degrees that you have. If it’s the latter, I would encourage you to look at the schools that you want to apply to, and they will have a list of requirements for courses that you would need in order to meet the minimum requirements. If it is more for career, I would look into industrial organizational psychology.
My apologies for the confusion , when I started graduate school I was in decisive, so I did my MBA in a general track after doing some long soul searching I realize that I would like to become a psychologist. I live in New York just trying to figure out where I should start?
In the uk you need 2 years experience before you can apply to PsyD. The competition is fierce as people who already have PhD apply. To become a mental health support worker I need a car and experience so even the entry level jobs are not easy to get.
I totally agree. This is why I specifically state that I am a clinical psychologist in the United States, and in California. The psychology students have to look up in their jurisdiction what is required to become a clinical psychologist, and then create a plan to execute. Please do not get intimidated based on the competition 💕. I am an African-American woman from Compton, who scored low on standardized test in high school, and to get into graduate school. However, I’m still in the top 5% in my industry. Don’t allow your mindset, limiting beliefs, or where you come from to stir you in a direction that you are not aligned with.
Thank you very much for this video, I had a question while watching this video, is the supervision course included in the university program or not? Does that mean you don't pay extra money to the supervisor? Because in my country, the supervision course is not part of the university program and we have to pay extra money and get a supervisor after finishing our studies, which means that in my country, apart from the university tuition, we have to pay for the supervisor as well. I wanted to know Is your country the same?
Great day. Every program is different. Supervision is included in your program when you are at your practicum sites. You will typically have a class during each semester that you are in practicum to help you conceptualize cases. You will also have an assigned supervisor at your practicum and internship site. Once you graduate and you are licensed, that's where if you need additional support with an area that you were never supervised on, it is ethically your responsibility to go and seek supervision. This is only for after you get licensed.
Hi DR. TK! This may be a silly question but do you have to have college credits before you can begin? And do you have to start off by getting an associates degree first?
Hi @@FitnessBeautyForYou I am 52 and will soon complete 2 Associates, Mental health and Psychology. 2 years time went by so quick and just like that I will continue to my BA. I am considering Clinical Psychology. For me, the last 2 years flew by and it is never too late to start, if you want it that bad and I do. Goodluck
Hi mam Currently im doing my bsc in psychology and i want to be a clinical psychologist like you but i have not much idea about that But now i have an idea but still iam confused about which one was to choose phd or psyd . Can you pls tell which is better ?
Reverse engineer what you want to do with your degree to determine which would be best. For example, some jobs require one over the other but most don’t care. But you do want to find a school that is accredited as that is super important for jobs after school.
Hi Dr TK! I recently graduated with an undergrad Bsc degree in psychology, starting my masters degree in child and young adolescent mental health this september, what sort of jobs do you recommend applying for with my level of qualification as a starting point in gaining experience and working my way up? (i live in the UK) thanks! :)
I would recommend only applying to jobs that will actually enjoy as we are in the serving field so you want to feel lit up about your choice the impact you are making.
Hello Doctor, I got my BA in human development from Cal State East Bay in 20216. I'm 31 years old, no kids, not married, and a current grad student at GCU working on my master's on industrial / Organizational psych. However , my goal is to get my psych D in clinical psychology. Am I on the right track? or do I need to be in a specific emphasis?
Work from the end goal in mind. I would suggest to review and ask those in that field what schools and curriculum they needed to either get the job or business they have had. Our field is so expansive that it’s hard for me to say there is ONE way or the BEST way as it really depends on where you want to end up. For any grad program, you always want to make sure you are taking the right pre-reqs
I am not familiar with that program although I have heard of it. I would contact schools that offer the degree to see possibilities beyond school to determine if it’s a good match to where you desire to go career wise.
I am currently a clinical mental health counselor with a masters degree working under supervision for lpc. I want to be a psychologist but I do not want to go through exams to become licensed as a psychologist what can I do?
Okay so I’m slightly confused..I have my bs in psychology and I want to do clinical psychology. Do I have to get a masters degree first than a psy.D? Also do you provide like a 1:1 training for a price?
Depending on your end goal, if you want to get a doctorate, you can do a psyd and the program includes a masters degree (most of them). I do not have 1:1 training for students. I use this channel to provide education.
You have to pass your licensing exam. After that you are good. You have to see what the requirements in your state are to sit for the exam through the licensing board.
I'm currently looking into which program type to apply for. If you complete a Master's in Clinical Psychology first, can you skip part of the PhD/PsyD later (i.e. complete it in less time)? I couldn't find any specific information concerning this question online. Maybe you/anyone else reading this know(s). 🙂
Would it take less time if I already have a master in Clinical Psychology to complete the doctorate? Or is doing a master first more or less a waste of time?

Also, the main question that continues to come up is: What degree should I have to move forward? It is not about the degree, it is about the pre-requiste from the grad school you want to attend so start there.
This was super informative! I’m 27 years old, single, with no kids. I’ve been out of undergrad for almost 6 years and I’m finally at a point in my life where I know exactly what it is that I want to do. I’m motivated than ever now and now it’s time to be about it n stop talking about it! Thank you so much ❤
You got this! Let's gooooo. It is never too late. It is about mindset and commitment.

Your very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it. :)
What would you say for someone who wants to take a non traditional route via Cal Southern? What advice would you give
Thank you so much. Please let me know if there are any other questions that you have so I can create some videos to help!

This was really clear and understandable. Thank you so much.

Awesome. That is so good. Psychology opens so many doors. Not just in mental health. You would be amazed what it prepares you to do.
Thank ! This video offers alot of clarity for me ! I’m grateful God led me here!
You are so welcome
I'd love to see a video on the internship portion you mentioned. That's my next step and any information would be awesome!

Oh wow, I hope you leaned in with PsyD.

I want a PsyD in Clinical Psychology too but I’m going through the cmhc route first!
Hi, I'm a 40yr old home maker. I had master's degree in Computer science but chose to stay home to look after my son(he is 10yr old). My questions are:
1. Is it practical to become a psychologist at this age?
2. If I start my undergraduate degree now, can I balance my maternal role and study?
3. If we get to work as a psychologist, can we balance work and family? How stressful it is?
Sorry if these questions are bothersome !! Trying to figure out!!
That’s the only thing stopping me. I’m very concerned about the time away from my own kids.
@@DoctorTK Thank you so much for the response doctor TK👍. I understand the solution depends on the circumstances and there is no one solution.
I would like to do that or work with adults in general. Clinical psychology …
The best part about clinical Psychology is you can do so many things in the future. That’s why I chose it. Flexibility.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Does the prestige of your grad school matter for getting a job? Specifically I'd like to be a professor
Oh this is such a great question as it does depend on what school you want to teach at. Some schools are very selective but they may not disclose this. I think it’s time for a part 2 of this video. 😁
Hi there ! I’m 39 yrs old and wondering if it’s too late for me to go because I have never been to college before
I don’t look at age. It’s all about the goal to finish and mapping it out before you start. I would recommend starting with a college counselor.
Oh yea this is why I chose clinical
Psychology. No caps on who you can work with and where. It’s really based on your internship experience.

I’m a teacher and want to become a psychologist.
Great video, thanks for the information. Would you know how to validate credentials in the US for PHD earned overseas?
Psychologist have a doctorate in psychology and focused
More on either research or services.
Thank you so much ma'am for this video. currently I m doing my bachelors in Applied psychology. Actually this is my 02nd degree. But i m 30 now is it too late to be psychologist. Just after my bachelors i m planning to do my masters too. Course being a clinical psychologist is my big dream
Most welcome 😊 please stay connected. I love creating content. Professor at heart.
I am starting at 52 and I wish I could have at 30. Keep going!
Hello. Thank you for great video. And I have a question. I am 33, and I started I interested in to become a psychologist or am I too "old" starting education?
Great day. Not at all. As a professor I had a range of students and the one thing that all of them needed is the commitment to finish.
Thank you!
Glad I could help with motivation. I’d suggest grad schools.com
To see schools and reach to ask
For their curriculum
And What master can I choose if I want to become a Clinical Psychologist, B.A or BS?
It all depends on your end goal. Start with the end goal in mind. Research what job or business you want and position and what it requires. Sometimes it’s the curriculum at the school and sometimes it doesn’t matter.
Taking this route is it guarantee. Never mind dont answer it would be fool ful of me to sit here and say its going to be easy

What kind of undergrad and masters degree would someone need. I have an undergrad in general studies because I didn't know what I wanted to do.
Dr so if I don't have the license can't I apply for work visa in another country?
For clinical work outside the country you would need to be licensed. Once licensed you can always check the country intended on working and your board of
Licensure and they will let
You know what is permitted.

Yes to become a clinical psychologist you have to obtain a doctorate degree and get licensed in tone state.
Hi Dr.
My daughter is under graduating next year with economics major.. but want to become psychologist. Please guide 🙏🏽

Thank you for this video
Your very welcome!!!
Sc in Biochemistry:
Or do I have to do a masters first?
Each school has its own requirements. You have to contact the program you are interested in to see is you meet pre requisites
This sounds impossible to someone working at the same time, right?
Depends on your current availability. You can go part time. I have a few videos coming out this week about more deets related to the process.
@@DoctorTK Thank you!

Thanks for the reply and yes I would like that if you don’t mind
This was such great info. I'm entering this field brand new at 39, no degree. Does it make sense to get started in this field? It seems like I may have missed my mark 😢
I was in the program with a wide range. It’s more about knowing your why related to a doctorate degree. Some do it for a specific job, option to do testing and some do it just for the title. Pick your option wisely based on being able to fully use you degree. Meaning are you all in to finish. Including licensure.
Can an international student directly do psy.D as well?
It depends on the program that you wish to attend and what their policies are on admissions. You would have to contact the program directly. Not all programs have the same entry requirements. I also just posted a video on the graduate school application process. Go check it out
@@DoctorTK Thankyou ❤️
can you work full time and do the doctoral program?
Thank you for this video. Can someone consider a career switch into educational psychology from International Relations B.A to a Master's to PhD?
Masters in Psychology conversion and PhD in Psychology I mean
Yes but I would highly recommend researching the curriculum and your end goals for psychology. That will determine which type of program you should consider. During the application process, I make sure to visit the campus and talk to professors that I would have 10 sure that it was a good match with my future goals
Yeah it's quite possible though it depends on the country you're, I have a degree in Educational Psychology Guidance and Counseling. But I focus more on another course, what country are you?
Hey please help me out
My question
Is it compulsory to complete graduation from canada only to get license in future???
I’m not sure I understand your question.
I have my Masters in Marriage and family therapy
I am currently a Doctoral student in Advance studies in human behavior.
How long would it take to open up my own personal/private clinic/storefront and what is the process ? @Doctor TK
I’m confused I was told that my masters program would provide me with LPC licensure and that I didn’t need a phd/psyd
A Masters in clinical psychology vs Lpc are different. Lox allows you to practice while the other is a dead end. Hence a doctorate is required to practice. If your goal lpc follow the school and board requirements
How long did it take you to complete your psychologist program?
So it truly depends on who you want to work with or for
@@DoctorTK thank you so much I will do just that 🩷
Hi Dr. May I know which school did u phd /psy in us?
Currently 32 going on 33 years old is it too late for me to become a psychologist? I feel that way because by the time I done with school I’ll be in my 40s
I’ve seen a variety of age groups and circumstances go through school. Are you committed to Finishing the marathon is the right question I would ask myself. Everyone’s capacity is different.
Any advice for someone who has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and an MBA?
Thank you for the reply =)
When you apply to have a job psychologist in school or hospital, do psychologist need vaccine to hired?
I’m not sure about vaccine. I’ve had a private practice for 10 years.
This is a very good question.
Thank you so much
Hi DR. TK!
This may be a silly question but do you have to have college credits before you can begin? And do you have to start off by getting an associates degree first?
To get a doctorate you need a bachelors at minimum
@@DoctorTK thanks for replying
Hi @@FitnessBeautyForYou I am 52 and will soon complete 2 Associates, Mental health and Psychology. 2 years time went by so quick and just like that I will continue to my BA. I am considering Clinical Psychology. For me, the last 2 years flew by and it is never too late to start, if you want it that bad and I do. Goodluck
Hi mam
Currently im doing my bsc in psychology and i want to be a clinical psychologist like you but i have not much idea about that
But now i have an idea but still iam confused about which one was to choose phd or psyd .
Hello, can I do a Master and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology with a Bachelor in Theology?
I am not familiar with that program although I have heard of it. I would contact schools that offer the degree to see possibilities beyond school to determine if it’s a good match to where you desire to go career wise.
I am currently a clinical mental health counselor with a masters degree working under supervision for lpc. I want to be a psychologist but I do not want to go through exams to become licensed as a psychologist what can I do?
Great day. Tk become a psychologist and practice you have to get licensed. Licensing to protect the public and to ensure you practice ethically.
@@DoctorTK thank you
Okay so I’m slightly confused..I have my bs in psychology and I want to do clinical psychology.
Can someone with a masters in mental health counseling apply for a phd or psy. d program?
What drew you to choose psychiatry vs psychology?
I’m 39 is it too late?
Nope. Half of my cohort was over 35. It’s more about commitment to finish than it is age.
Is it possible to get licensed as a clinical psychologist after graduating from online psyd program at Cal Southern University in California?
You have to pass your licensing exam. After that you are good. You have to see what the requirements in your state are to sit for the exam through the licensing board.
@@DoctorTK Thank you for taking the time to reply back. Appreciate it!
I'm currently looking into which program type to apply for. If you complete a Master's in Clinical Psychology first, can you skip part of the PhD/PsyD later (i.e. complete it in less time)? I couldn't find any specific information concerning this question online. Maybe you/anyone else reading this know(s). 🙂
If you want to do non clinical work yes. If you want to do therapy, you have to get a doctorate if in clinical psychology
Would it take less time if I already have a master in Clinical Psychology to complete the doctorate? Or is doing a master first more or less a waste of time?
Thank you! And you're so beautiful ;)
