During my time in Fairbanks you had to be close to the mountains and during the months of Nov and Dec to have the best chances to see the Northern Lights. That was back in 87. Your home looks really wonderful; a Good first home. My favorite pastime was fishing so I was in heaven. Hope 'things' continue to go your way!
Do you have grid electricity? Generator? Solar? All? Do you have a heat source other than the wood stove? Oil, propane, natural gas, kerosene? Internet access? What type? Cell phone service? Basement? How old are you two?
Grid, just the “wood” stove but it’s actually gas. Satelite internet. Decent cell phone service, no basement but there is a crawl space for storage. We are in our early 20’s. Think I hit everything.
I’m started training in South Carolina and now in Virginia for the Army and should be back home in September. I miss home so damn much!!! Thank you for showing me home ! Y’all will love Alaska folks

Welcome to Alaska. There is almost 300 miles of trails just around Anchorage area. If you guys like getting out going for hikes, camping, fishing, etc. I would suggest getting a strong firearm and getting very well acquainted with it.
Your house is so nice. It reminds me of my parents house they had in Minnesota on the lake. The cost of living and accessibility to family in Alaska is a very similar downside for us when we moved to Hawaii. ✌

Summer is a great time to visit. The sun is definitely a little weird but a good mask or even just covering you head with a blanket seems to do the trick.
I had a layover in Minnesota, flying to Anchorage on 9/3/21. Spent only 1 partial day there & the rest in Denali. I did get to check out Talkeetna & Girdwood. 2nd time going solo. Last time, was Fairbanks last winter. How often did you have to shovel snow during the winter & what do you all do for a living to be able to live there? What realtor did you work with to do your house search? Thanks!

Mainly just Anchorage and the Valley but I have done some deals down in Kenai as well. Yes we have been there and it is great. Super good halibut fishing out of there, the spit is a nice place to check out and in late July/August there are fields of fireweed everywhere. It is a long drive from Anchorage though so I wouldn't suggest trying to do it in a day (from experience)!

We looked at Fairbanks as well but that was too far north for us and had fewer opportunities. We also looked at moving to North Carolina but decided on Alaska.
Nice video. It takes courage to move to Alaska. Long winters. Do you guys have to commute to work from outside the city and if so do the roads ever get blocked off by snow?
We live in Bear Valley so not technically outside the city. Roads are generally cleared pretty quick. We were "stuck" up at the house for the morning after we got like 14+ inches of wet heavy snow over night. We have a Jeep though which can get through most snow falls.

What kind of internet are you getting there? What are your utilities like? Hope you don't mind my questions. Hoping to make it to AK some day.
Here in Anchorage we rent this for $1,600 but that is all utilities (including internet) included. Our internet is decent but it is capped and way more expensive then down in the lower 48.
i was in the military and stationed in fairbanks. Fairbanks is the one where there is not much except mom and pop stores, walmart, and stuff. the mall is very small in fairbanks. we used to call it the hallways😂 i wish i was in anchorage😭 im in florida now im thinking about moving to colorado or anchorage
I was living in Fairbanks when they opened the first McDonald's there in the 70's. Other than Shakey's Pizza, it was the only chain restaurant in town that I remember. It was the biggest thing that had ever happened in Fairbanks, and for several years it was the highest grossing McDonald's in the world.

I lived off Upper DeArmoun for 8 years on the Hillside. Loved it, but hated having to come off the hill to go into Anchorage. Anchorage is nowhere neaar the city it used to be, very sad to see. Thats why we moved to the Valley, been here for 13 years and not going anywhere. Nice vid!
Check out the Hopper app. We used it to book our last trip to Alaska, & other vacations. It color codes (most affordable/most expensive) the month so you can plan for plane tickets better. We love it!
Would you consider Alaska a bike friendly state? We currently live in Florida but this is not as active state . No place to raise active children. We have Colorado and new York on our list for friendly active living. Would you recommend anchorage for too?
Anchorage has a ton of biking trails. Biking around the city can be done as well, there are some bike lanes and such but the focus is on trails in parks and such. I would suggest Eagle River for raising kids. Its a more family oriented town about 10 minutes away from Anchorage. Just be careful with the Bears!
Chain stores are unfortunately everywhere. Funny you love the coffee shops so much. They always look great, unfortunately I don't drink coffee. But the winter at least looks really pretty. But I can imagine it can get too much after a while.
Sophia Michelle Speaking of internet, is it solid bandwidth? Stream Netflix without difficulty? If you needed to telecommute to work, would rural Alaska internet cut it?
There is a definite bump in pay here compared to other places to make up for some of the cost of living differences. There is also the annual payment from the state for living here which helps as well.

Which health stores are there/ such as Whole Foods or Earth Fare? Also are there Marshalls/ TJ Max or similar? How about the quality of fresh organic food and bread ? thanks so much!
There is a health foods store called natural pantry which is very similar to a whole food or trader joes. There is not a Marhsall or TJ Max but there is a Nordstrom Rack. Fred Meyers (the local grocery store) also has a decent selection of organic/healthier food options. Hope this helps.
Hey guys! Coming to Anchorage and wondering if it's okay to do the whale cruises in the rain? I see we have a few days of rain while we are in town and just planning our days.
Assuming its just a light rain and the water isn't to choppy the tour will likely go on. I would suggest calling your tour ahead of time and packing a rain coat along with some warmer clothing. We went on a tour in July and even on a nicer day it was very cold by the glaciers. Hope this helps!

@@jordanandsoph Re: Long periods of daylight during summer... Ans: Blackout curtains or sleep masks! If you don't mind a little drive, 3 Bears Alaska is a great shopping experience. They have some Kirkland Signature (Costco) products without the parking hassle of the Dimond or DeBarr Costco stores.

I moved from alaska to texas 2 years ago and now plan to move back next year with my husband who was born and raised in alaska. A lot of other states are full of ugly, selfish people and while yes there are those everywhere including alaska i feel like there are less of those kinds of people in alaska.
I’m quite disappointed because I really want to move from Illinois to Alaska and become a conservation officer, but I currently have no money and no partner, and life goes by so fast. I feel like I’m just stuck here in Illinois, and I’ll never get my dream job.

Planning our move to Anchorage, thank you for your post. Question: how is internet in Bear Valley and who maintains the roads (I hope that isn’t a sore spot in asking but I wasn’t sure how to find out any other way.)
No problem I hope it helped! The internet isn't great, its usable and can still stream pretty much anything but very expensive and much slower compared to the lower 48. The roads in Bear Valley specifically are maintained fairly well through contractors. So far this year our road that is plowed by a contractor has been much clearer much sooner then the city roads leading out to Bear Valley. Let me know if you have any other questions!

How come you guys never talk about how much Alaska pays people to live there?? Is that something you guys are trying to hide or is it illegal to talk about?? Better yet, I heard that it is night time for several months straight, is that true?? I also heard that it is sunlight for 3 months or something like that, is that true?? Hello, these are great questions that we should probably have covered. It is true, you do get paid anywhere between $1,000 and $2,500 to live here. However, you have to live here for a full calendar year before you get it. Also this is all tied to oil taxes and lately Alaska has been hurting. Their is speculation this will eventually end at the current rate. Another point is that there is currently no state income tax, another thing that may be changing do to decreased oil production/price. Parts of Alaska are always dark in the winter. Here in Anchorage I would say the least amount of light was around 9:30 to 4PM so still over 5 hours of "sunlight". It is worthy of noting the sun never gets high in the sky and always sits pretty low in the horizon. Let us know if you have any other questions.

As someone who was born and raised here in Alaska, I'll say that villages do get hit with snow quite hard and will get freezing cold. Anchorage, on the other hand, is the states biggest city and no it's NOT true that the state stays in darkness but during the winter, daylight is very short and during summer daylight is very long
Things new comers do not know. 1. There is only about 3 days food supply any where in Alaska at any time. 2. look all around & count the number of things that is not shipped in to Alaska. There is 99.999 % of everything is shipped in to Alaska. But that is not all. 3. Alaska has the largest Mosquitos population in the all the lower 49 states together. Never leave town with out "Bug Dope". They can plug the air intake on a Cat D8 & kill the engine, by choking of the air intake filter. Most people that live in Alaska have not a clue about where they are living. 4. I would say less than 30% of the population know this info. 5. Because of the pandemic the only way to go & come to Alaska is by fly in or out or by Ship in or out. 6. the ships are booked up every summer by the end of January. Good luck till next year.
Anchorage doesn't get too cold. Rarely gets below 0 degrees Fahrenheit and is often in the 20's through winter (late October to early November). Fairbanks on the other hand is extremely cold. It isn't uncommon to reach -40.
I want to move from. Scotland to alaska! I want maybe a farm or just living as a hunter/Fisher. But I don't know how to do ANY of that as I live in a small town ;-; I also have no money as I'm a highschooler, is it a bad idea xD
No best to go with about £12000 though kid. Plus you would have to be accepted by the immigration department. So you'd need a good education and job experience 🙂.

I am currently working towards becoming a mortician in Kentucky and my partner is a package handler worker at UPS. I would work on getting my embalmer and funeral director license from Kentucky switched for Alaska somehow lol and he would work for UPS in anchorage. I would like to know what you both do for work to be able to afford this place because it looks like our DREAM HOME!!! I hope you all are well and staying safe! I moved to Eagle River just north of Anchorage from Florida last year in August, 2020. A flight back home for me about 12 hours or longer, although I haven't taken that trip yet. Winter did seem to last a long time although it was my real first winter so I enjoyed it. Winter here is more beautiful than summer IMO. Me and my kids also miss Chick-fil-A so much! I disagree about one thing: there is no Dunkin Donuts in Anchorage. If you saw one, PLEASE tell me where it is!!

We notice a price jump at restaurants! The cost of living overall here is definitely higher as well, but not as bad as we thought it might be.

i was in the military and stationed in fairbanks. Fairbanks is the one where there is not much except mom and pop stores, walmart, and stuff. the mall is very small in fairbanks. we used to call it the hallways😂 i wish i was in anchorage😭 im in florida now im thinking about moving to colorado or anchorage
That is quite a change in climate!
I was living in Fairbanks when they opened the first McDonald's there in the 70's. Other than Shakey's Pizza, it was the only chain restaurant in town that I remember. It was the biggest thing that had ever happened in Fairbanks, and for several years it was the highest grossing McDonald's in the world.

I lived off Upper DeArmoun for 8 years on the Hillside. Loved it, but hated having to come off the hill to go into Anchorage. Anchorage is nowhere neaar the city it used to be, very sad to see. Thats why we moved to the Valley, been here for 13 years and not going anywhere. Nice vid!

Check out the Hopper app. We used it to book our last trip to Alaska, & other vacations. It color codes (most affordable/most expensive) the month so you can plan for plane tickets better. We love it!

Would you consider Alaska a bike friendly state? We currently live in Florida but this is not as active state . No place to raise active children. We have Colorado and new York on our list for friendly active living. Would you recommend anchorage for too?
Anchorage has a ton of biking trails. Biking around the city can be done as well, there are some bike lanes and such but the focus is on trails in parks and such. I would suggest Eagle River for raising kids. Its a more family oriented town about 10 minutes away from Anchorage. Just be careful with the Bears!
Chain stores are unfortunately everywhere. Funny you love the coffee shops so much. They always look great, unfortunately I don't drink coffee. But the winter at least looks really pretty. But I can imagine it can get too much after a while.

How is your home Internet service? Reliable? Fast?
Surprisingly we have very few issues with it. We stream quite a bit and it generally handles it well. Way more expensive then the lower 48 though.
How much does a house(or cottage) like this run for in Anchorage?

We moved from Minnesota. We moved pre-covid. I know there are a lot of restrictions not going through Canada if you plan on driving here.
how is the employment there compared to the cost of living?
There is a definite bump in pay here compared to other places to make up for some of the cost of living differences. There is also the annual payment from the state for living here which helps as well.
How much are you paying monthly. My husband and I are moving to Anchorage in march/April and it's hard to find beautiful cottages like yours!

Which health stores are there/ such as Whole Foods or Earth Fare? Also are there Marshalls/ TJ Max or similar? How about the quality of fresh organic food and bread ? thanks so much!
There is a health foods store called natural pantry which is very similar to a whole food or trader joes. There is not a Marhsall or TJ Max but there is a Nordstrom Rack. Fred Meyers (the local grocery store) also has a decent selection of organic/healthier food options. Hope this helps.

November till about April. Just outside of city limits so there is no light pollution.
Hey guys! Coming to Anchorage and wondering if it's okay to do the whale cruises in the rain? I see we have a few days of rain while we are in town and just planning our days.
Assuming its just a light rain and the water isn't to choppy the tour will likely go on. I would suggest calling your tour ahead of time and packing a rain coat along with some warmer clothing. We went on a tour in July and even on a nicer day it was very cold by the glaciers. Hope this helps!

@@jordanandsoph Re: Long periods of daylight during summer... Ans: Blackout curtains or sleep masks! If you don't mind a little drive, 3 Bears Alaska is a great shopping experience. They have some Kirkland Signature (Costco) products without the parking hassle of the Dimond or DeBarr Costco stores.

I moved from alaska to texas 2 years ago and now plan to move back next year with my husband who was born and raised in alaska. A lot of other states are full of ugly, selfish people and while yes there are those everywhere including alaska i feel like there are less of those kinds of people in alaska.
I’m quite disappointed because I really want to move from Illinois to Alaska and become a conservation officer, but I currently have no money and no partner, and life goes by so fast. I feel like I’m just stuck here in Illinois, and I’ll never get my dream job.

Question: how is internet in Bear Valley and who maintains the roads (I hope that isn’t a sore spot in asking but I wasn’t sure how to find out any other way.)
No problem I hope it helped! The internet isn't great, its usable and can still stream pretty much anything but very expensive and much slower compared to the lower 48. The roads in Bear Valley specifically are maintained fairly well through contractors. So far this year our road that is plowed by a contractor has been much clearer much sooner then the city roads leading out to Bear Valley. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I would love to take the photography class with my kids. We love to learn and live local as much as possible. We love to visit local organic farms from private to public venues. Any advice on living near Anchorage is greatly appreciated as we are learning the area.

How come you guys never talk about how much Alaska pays people to live there?? Is that something you guys are trying to hide or is it illegal to talk about?? Better yet, I heard that it is night time for several months straight, is that true?? I also heard that it is sunlight for 3 months or something like that, is that true?? These are the things I need to know about before I go
Hello, these are great questions that we should probably have covered. It is true, you do get paid anywhere between $1,000 and $2,500 to live here. However, you have to live here for a full calendar year before you get it. Also this is all tied to oil taxes and lately Alaska has been hurting. Their is speculation this will eventually end at the current rate. Another point is that there is currently no state income tax, another thing that may be changing do to decreased oil production/price. Parts of Alaska are always dark in the winter. Here in Anchorage I would say the least amount of light was around 9:30 to 4PM so still over 5 hours of "sunlight". It is worthy of noting the sun never gets high in the sky and always sits pretty low in the horizon. Let us know if you have any other questions.

As someone who was born and raised here in Alaska, I'll say that villages do get hit with snow quite hard and will get freezing cold. Anchorage, on the other hand, is the states biggest city and no it's NOT true that the state stays in darkness but during the winter, daylight is very short and during summer daylight is very long

We packed in as much as we could but they went way to fast!
Things new comers do not know. 1. There is only about 3 days food supply any where in Alaska at any time. 2. look all around & count the number of things that is not shipped in to Alaska. There is 99.999 % of everything is shipped in to Alaska. But that is not all. 3. Alaska has the largest Mosquitos population in the all the lower 49 states together. Never leave town with out "Bug Dope". They can plug the air intake on a Cat D8 & kill the engine, by choking of the air intake filter.
Most people that live in Alaska have not a clue about where they are living. 4. I would say less than 30% of the population know this info. 5. Because of the pandemic the only way to go & come to Alaska is by fly in or out or by Ship in or out. 6. the ships are booked up every summer by the end of January. Good luck till next year.

Anchorage doesn't get too cold. Rarely gets below 0 degrees Fahrenheit and is often in the 20's through winter (late October to early November). Fairbanks on the other hand is extremely cold. It isn't uncommon to reach -40.

No best to go with about £12000 though kid. Plus you would have to be accepted by the immigration department. So you'd need a good education and job experience 🙂.
Hello I have just found your channel and you are both ADORABLE!! My partner and I are currently in Louisville KY and we want to move to anchorage Alaska with our kitty. And my question for the both of is what do you do for a living if you don’t mind me asking. I am currently working towards becoming a mortician in Kentucky and my partner is a package handler worker at UPS. I would work on getting my embalmer and funeral director license from Kentucky switched for Alaska somehow lol and he would work for UPS in anchorage. I would like to know what you both do for work to be able to afford this place because it looks like our DREAM HOME!!! I hope you all are well and staying safe! I moved to Eagle River just north of Anchorage from Florida last year in August, 2020. A flight back home for me about 12 hours or longer, although I haven't taken that trip yet.
Winter did seem to last a long time although it was my real first winter so I enjoyed it. Winter here is more beautiful than summer IMO.
Me and my kids also miss Chick-fil-A so much!
I disagree about one thing: there is no Dunkin Donuts in Anchorage. If you saw one, PLEASE tell me where it is!!
