“Know these scales by heart, nail them in your brain, and then forget them” it sounds so strange but it’s so true. It has to become instinctual rather than something your consciously aware of. You have to learn it to a point where you look at the guitar and you see the shapes and then you can just put everything you have into the music and get lost in it because your brain understands the guitar so it’s kind of like a safety net if that makes sense. You always have another place on the guitar to go, another thing to do.

The most meaningful guitar video I've ever watched. Recognizes John's guitar playing for the psychological aspects. Plenty of Frusciante theory vids out there. This is a super complex idea/issue and you articulated it really well. Brilliant vid Dave, thanks as always.

Great video, Dave :) The feel is so incredibly important and often underestimated. The amount of love for music that comes from John when he plays just leaves me speechless. An amazing musician can completely change your life, which is what John did for me and many other people. A lot of guitarists view music as some type of competition, like how many notes you can play in one minute, which is just ridiculous. It may look impressive, but doesn't reach the soul, at least not mine. But as you said, it takes a long time to be able to shut off the brain and get completely lost in music.. I'm still far away from that moment. Can't wait for other videos, keep rocking, Dave!

Feel is definitely something that adds to playing. I can be playing blues lead and not really think about it, and it sounds okay, but as soon as I start to think about expressing some feelings through my playing it goes up a level. I often like to put some ambient effects on such as delay and close my eyes and then play a soundtrack to the images in my mind. This is definitely something that should be practised just as much as technical skills. Good video :)

I love youtube. As somebody who at 41 years old started learning the guitar again it has pointed me in the direction of Dave. Who in turn as somebody who knew who the chilli peppers were (bought BSSM in 1992) but didn't really care for them was introduced to their Guitarist John. I'm now so lucky to be discovering all John's work for the very first time and I'm amazed! Thanks Dave 👍

Thanks for another amazing video Dave ! You're the only person that can teach how to play like John, because it's so clear to see that you just have this "thing" in you. Not all guitarists can explain music in the way that you and John do it. You're just so passionate about it, you have so much love for it, and I can hear it in your every word or played note. That is a real talent. Really, Dave you're such a special person. Thank you for being here and sharing your for music and love for John with us. Sending a huge hug from Poland 😗

Top stuff. I can't help feeling that in order to get to the "zen Johnness" you have to have the solos so far down that you no longer think about what you are playing. I love the solo to "Hey" but I can't get anywhere near the expression that he has, which make you want to weep. You might want to teach this one. I will also be looking forward to the I Could Have Lied solos - perhaps his best, especially the second one, for which I have failed to find a lesson. Thank you so much. You are the MASTER!

Good commentary. I've thought John's actual "chops" are pretty middle of the road for a professional guitarist. It's his feel and musicality (and his personal style and songcraft.. and yes, the Hendrix-ish stuff mixed wit the string muting and funkiness) that makes him great.
And I 100% agree that "guitar for guitar's sake" is stupid and leaves me cold (re: the comment about Vai and his ilk). Props to those guys for tireless practice and doing what they love, but to me that's more guitar-as-athletics than it is about music. It can be impressive, or cool to see, but it's not going to change anyone's life.
I look at someone like an Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse) as similar in that there's just an ability to connect on the cellular level due to personal style and a focus on song first. He doesn't have the chops that John does, but he sees guitar as a means to an end rather than an end itself.
John himself has said this in an interview - basically that music isn't about what you can do on a piece of wood with some strings and electronics- the purpose is to connect and create something that transcends the notes/scales and isn't just an excuse to show off.

I kinda think this is where understanding theory will help. Although we will never know how he feels, we could figure out his habits. i.e. What intervals does he like to use within a scale? Does he like to jump from the I to the IV or V alot? etc...etc.

Ana Popovic, my blues guitarist, feels her music and lets her music flow too. John and Ana have the same thing: Feel and Flow. Both Rock and Blues have the same feeling and flowing. Also, I can play five Chili Peppers(maybe six cause I'm learning right now, Snow, which one of their hardest songs to master. Cool video!!!!!

Not an RHCP fan really, but this lesson is right on the money. Whatever you are playing, play what you feel. Don't just run through licks that sound cool or impress. Play a song. Songs have melody and you have to feel it. You cant teach people that because the only person who knows how they feel is themselves. I could never be a guitar teacher because besides theory, you cant teach anyone anything. Plus, I hate playing other peoples songs. Its annoying lol. Great lesson dave. love your vids as always. After your done with the john lessons you should dig into Rory Gallagher.

Hi Dave. So with feel and flow being stated and the essence of diving into solos....is John adhering to certain scale laws within the context of the chord progression or is he going free form wild all ear no scales or laws when he goes into those epic emotive solos? Opposed to Dani California which we saw was very scaled oriented

you're unbelievably talented & doing an amazing job of taking on the adventure of diving deep into guitar theory & soul theory haha.
the shear patience & dedication in making these amazing videos is just unbelievably awesome.
also, your untitled series is quittttttte moving.
so, now that I'm done barely scratching the surface on the proper respect you actually deserve, I would like to ask.
Would there be a small list of milestones you would recommend in order to improvise & create effectively?
or perhaps a soon to be video?

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you very much indeed. So happy you like my videos. :)
Milestones are a real personal thing. Ask yourself what you want of the guitar and start working towards that. Then once thats achieved ask yourself again and keep going. Like for example. You want to get better at soloing. Miles tone one would be to learn your 5 positions of the pentatonic scale. Then once you have that say you want ot start playing with more feel. And so on. I hope this helps and thank you agiain. :)

Not really. Its all the experience you pick up along the way that make you a better player. :)

Hey Dave I'm about to start a project guitar starting with a squire bullet and I'm going to make it look like and sound like john's strat. you have any tips on relicing a polyurethane finish guitar?

    • @thedavesimpson

Wear eye protection. Have a very sharpe craft knife and take your time. :)

The dust also smells terrible when you sand it off, so I can't imagine it's great to breath, I refinished a Bass VI that had polyurethane finish recently. How did the Squire Bullet project go?
