Rhodesian Bush War - Operation Gatling (1978) - Green Leader

  • This video is my attempt at recreating the iconic bombing sequence at Westlands farm, by RhAF Canberra Bombers, Led by Squadron Leader Chris Dixon, who identified himself to Lusaka Airport tower as the famous "Green Leader" callsign. Now because there is no existing historical footage of the operation itself (that I know of), I was only able to use footage that is available on the internet. After searching around, I stumbled across this video: Rhodesian Air Force: Winged Assegais. From this channel: / memoriesofrhodesia (Hence, why there is a watermark on the top left corner of the video from the original video). Although the Canberra bomber footage from Rhodesian Air Force: Winged Assegais; is not related to the original operation. But after editing the footage and fitting the pieces together along with the radio chatter from the actual Operation Gatling, with the addition of the soundtrack. I managed to create this.

    Operation Gatling
    October 19-21, 1978
Phase 1: The first phase of the operation involved a series of airstrikes by the Rhodesian Air Force, with the use of RhAF Canberra Bombers against the ZIPRA base situated at Westlands Farm, Zambia.

Thanks for the recreation. Am fascinated by Rhodesian history. I am a black Zimbabwean who grew up in Chitungwiza. I was young during the war and the ZANU govt hid this part of history from us. They only present history from the guerillas point of view.

Is there still a substantial number of rhodesians who if given the ability and the political will to do so would they take it back by force if supported ? This is all just a thought , sheer curiosity. I’ve come to revere and respect a lot about this great story that ended with an awful betrayal . I’m sure there are many who say it can never be again , but that’s why I think it was betrayed to begin with , good men lost the will to fight , certainly not in Rhodesia but politically good men across the west have been beaten back so badly, and of course communist agents within our states helped the cause.

@@davidcummins9903 Sir. I am in my 30's. Our fathers had many sons. I know many Rhodies having grown up in Natal, where most of them have settled. Rhodesia cannot be taken back with any due ease. For now, we, the Boer, want the NC and WC provinces in South Africa to create an independent state. Many Rhodies and other English men included. A Singapore of Africa. Consolidate. Then later my son can have a braai on the banks of the Congo. The spirit of the Rhodies and Boer is very strong. The world has always underestimated us. I agree that the West is declining and few men are left. But one needs only a few dedicated, trained and disciplined men to meet the hordes.
      God bless you.

I am a Rhodesian, born in Bulawayo. I never fought in the Rhodesian war, having left the country when I was 6. I know military service, however, having been conscripted into the SADF from the then SWA. Recently I've been looking into the Rhodesian war and I can only conclude that those who fought were "super-human". Whether you take the fighting men who sometimes did several contacts per day, often outnumbered 50-1, or the techs keeping the obsolete aircraft in the air, they were amazing people. My only sadness is that the Black people of the country were on the receiving end of a racist regime. My mother told me, for example, that you could kill a farm worker and simply go to the local police station and pay a 10 Pound fine for "Killing a Kaffir". Yes, the education system for black people was, perhaps, the best in Africa, but Whites were still the upper class. Perhaps a different attitude towards the natives of Rhodesia would have resulted in a different outcome. Just my musings - - -.

I can point specifically to a former DC who went on a shooting rampage in the Mtoko area late in the war (79 or early 1980). He was apprehended - charged, and convicted of multiple counts of murder of African civilians and given a life sentence. Some 30+ years later he was released from prison by the Mugabe ZANU-PF regime
Those are real facts and you can look them up...cheers.😊
