I agree with other #4 for cutting leather in strips. But I don't have a clue about the others. Looking at the number of views I calculate as of this time 314 people an hour (on average) have chosen to watch your video. And I think is fantastic when you look at the other options on here. Good series Mr. Pete.
Number 4 is used to cut leather belts or straps. Probably made by Osborne.
I can safely say I have know idea 😂 on any of them great video Mr pete .
#1 is a brake spring puller #2 is a valve spring compressor #3 i think is for the old rebuildable shock asorbers the derringer looks like a leather skive
I give up!
Hi Mr. Pete. Just saying that I personally really enjoy the what is it videos. Both question and answer portions. Will miss them if you decide not to continue with them. 🙂👍🇳🇱
At 57 , I STILL get nervous when the teacher uses reverse psychology and says “ go ahead and cheat !” 🤔
It made me nervous too. But lots of people do it and I do not mind.
@@mrpete222 in my 8th grade French class the kid sitting to my left would blatantly copy off my paper during quizzes. I could never quite figure out why his would always wind up graded as C while mine almost never had more than one wrong answer.
1 seal puller
2 valve spring compressor
3 Transmission tool used to remove speedo gear
4 leather strap cutter
#1 brake spring tool with adjustable fulcrum.
#2 valve spring compressor.
#3 truck wedge type brake spring compressor
#4 leather belt cutter.
On the lead holder pointer...you can just use 320 grit sandpaper in it. I've been an architect for 40 years. I've sharpened about 150 miles of lead in one of these. Today in these days of computers, I hardly ever pick up a pencil.
Good idea, but I will probably throw it away. Like you said we seldom pick up a pencil.
Yes and unfortunately, it’s pretty sad.
#4 maybe is for cutting strips of leather/hide reigns for example?
I give up!
I think by now you've shown just about every tool that has ever existed.
Now you're just lucky dipping parts from you auction buys and cobbling the parts into "Mystery Tools"
I can't wait to see what these really are.
Keep em coming.
#1 looks like a seal puller and the handle looks very KDish. #2 looks like a valve spring compressor. #4 looks like a leather belt cutter.
I thought KDish handle too. Maybe a seal puller???
Thanks for sharing! These old finds are always neat.
I definitely recognize some sort of seal puller and spring compressor in there.
I used to live and work not too far from you for a couple of years back in the late 1990s. I lived in Oglesby and worked in Ottawa. I always had fun boating and fishing on the Illinois River. 🙂
By the way, I definitely credit high school shop class and fiddling about the house on projects with helping me to be a better engineer in my career. The practical application skills made for better design skills, too! It makes a difference when you are the one who has to "live with" the end use of the design. Splitting vocational and college track classes was one of the worst mistakes that schools made when it came to shaping the next generation of engineers. YOU are still helping me to progress and grow, even in my 50s.
I picked up a lot of skills from working in the mining industry for several years. My degree is actually in mining engineering, although I'm in Public Works these days.
seal puller, valve depressor, tie rod unseater, belt knife
Another film in the can. Love it.
Your Starrett Pencil which has tiny jaws to grip the lead is called a Clutch Pencil. Similar pencils that do not have jaws to hold the lead are Prepelling Pencils or Mechanical Pencils. Lead holders are normally used by artists to hold much thicker leads than those used for writing.
Thank you I did not know any of that
Hey Mr Pete, #4 I believe is for cutting strips of leather. Not sure about the other things
I'm very excited to see the upcoming videos, especially to see what's in the locked cabinet. Thanks.
#2 is a valve spring compressor for an overhead cam style head. The hook slips under the camshaft and the Y shaped part compresses the spring. The L shape hook on the end went into a hole in the head to provide the fulcrum. I done remember what make head that it was. It has been close to 35 years since I used one.
Hmmm, I'm stumped. I guess that's why I like these videos, I learn something. I'm pretty sure the first Mr. Pete video that I saw was a "What Is It". I was immediately hooked.
I'll bet that #3 is for assembling a distributor of some kind. #2 is a spring compressor, who knows for what. The other two are more obvious.
The blade in the strap cutter is backwards. You cut by pulling rather than pushing. Works good with a little practice.
Mr Pete I love your what is it series. But this time you have me 100% stumped.
I am stumped on three of them. I only know what the Derringer is.
1. ?, 2. ?, 3. Some kind of pulling or spring compressing tool, 4. Strip cutting tool
Last item is for stripping leather belts to a set width. May be able to strip other stuff , such as lino. and could also double as a marking gauge!
You have me stumped on the first 3, I think the 4th is a leather strip cutter for cutting leather straps from large hides.
#1 is a paint can opener
#2 ...hmmm something you might see at a bar mitzvah??
#3 looks to be a coil spring compressor tool for struts etc
#4 a leather strip cutter
#1 is a Framus Valve puller. #2 is a Framus Valve seater.
Thx for the video! Those tools r before my time. ❤
#1 is a seal puller, used on engines and hydraulic cylinders.
Number 4 is a strap cutter. For leather or rubber belting perhaps.
I am going to guess that number 4 is a gasket cutter.
Another interesting episode, I love this series. Thank you! ♥
Glad you enjoy it!
Thanks again, Mr Pete.
thanks Mr Pete i enjoyed the video
Good morning Mr.Pete
1: rubber gasket puller? Like for pulling a large gasket over a lip?
2: not even a guess
3: for pressing valve seats?
4: leather cutter. For making strips
Hi Mr Pete, keep on filming.
Another great one. Thank you
I cheated but I still don't know the purpose of the sliding piece
Good like always and more coming. I chuckled and wrung my hands together. : - )
Thanks!, from a frequent viewer that really enjoys both the A & B parts of the “What is it” series. Count me in the 25% that know what item 4 is.
loving the Mystery Tool episodes,,,,,,,talk you Lyle....
You're killing me on the bench. I go to TH-cam every five minutes to see if you made the video yet. Lol
Hi David. Thanks to you and Tom for doing the lifting. The auction video will be on Saturday. And the cabinet of Dr. Caligari will be on Sunday.
I successfully picked the lock in less than 15 seconds. Of course it’s a simple lock.
#4 is a leather strap cutter
I am stumped, but hope you will continue the what is it series.
Hi Mr. Pete. I have watched your videos for a while and now while I am waiting around for my new knee replacement to “cure”, I am able to watch quite a bit. Always fascinating. As a septuagenarian woodworker, I would call item 4 a marking gauge. From the comments it appears specific to leather cutting. But similar principles. Hope you keep posting these great What Is It? Series. Thanks. Bill C
👍👍👍
At auction, I acquired a wall mounted Boston hand crank Pencil sharpener. Kerosene freed it up, and evaporust cleaned the rust off the body. It's a nice addition to the layout space in the shop.
Boston brand was the best
Mr. Pete!! Hi from Nacogdoches, TX. Your “What is It” series is great!!
Thank you very much much
I'm just guessing, but item number 4 looks like it might be some kind of cobbler's or leatherworker's tool. If that's what it is, I'd like to see somebody using one.
I love these mystery tools. They are fun. Keep them coming!
1 is brake spring puller. KD or Lisle I bet
2 is valve spring compressor
3 is an air brake spring compressor
4 is a strop or belt cutter for cutting leather
no clue for this WII?.... maybe a henweigh (?)
Yes I think I watch all of your videos
😁😁
Number three looks like it could possibly be a spring compressor for motorcycle shock springs
I recognize the red or orange handle on number one; I think Thexton used that same handle but it's possible that other companies used the same handle. I have no idea what the tool is used for though other than is appears to lift something. I have no idea what two and three are. Four is a leather cutting tool and I have one.
Morning Lyle
I can only identify one of the items shown in the table and that’s an orange insulated mug for hot or cold beverages.
1 is a KD Seal and Pilot Bearning puller 2824
I've seen the first 3 but must admit I've never used them, so i don't know what they do.
#1 i a slide hammer with a hook for grabbing internal edges
# 4 looks like it is used for cutting leather straps.
#3 appears to be a spring compressor. What spring?
Item # 4 looks like a leather cutting tool, maybe a belt cutter.
I think it's some kind a spring remover or compressor
No.4 used to cut leather into straps or belts.
I have no idea what any of those items are
2 valve spring compressor
Item #4 is a leather strap cutter.
#1 seal puller. Not a clue on the rest
4 is for cutting belts
#4 maybe a marking gauge??
The lead pointer I use a lot is an Alvin. About the size of a lip stick which has a very small blade mounted inside, parallel to the lead. A small cup which screws on the end catches the graphite.
👍
#2 glass cutting tool
#3 spring compressor
#4glass cutting tool
Thanks Lyle...
Fiber tile scribe
Rotten youtube! This video has been up 7 days and just now they put it in my que.
I am surprised you got it at all
Number one is a seal puller and it was used to drag the seal pups up the beach when they were clubbing seals. 😁
That’s a good one. Best sworn I’ve heard in a long time.
Sadly I tried to give you a link to a much better quality version of your SouthBend instructions under that 'please help' video and now all my comments disappear. Testing if the same happens on this video. sigh.
Search for mill_index and wswells and you might find it
Even replies seem to get zapped if I even try and give clues. double sigh. Ahhh Technology
🖖
#4 is definately a leather strap cutter, i have one still but made of wood and adjustable knife blade. #3 obviously is for compressing something so I'm guessing it's for shocks?
I guessed #1 was some kind of inside retaining ring puller, but cheated and found out it's still available and worth $119.
#4 I could see how it was used, but on what material, I did not know.
#2 and 3 were probably made by Cal-Van or Lisle, but no idea what there for. Thanks, Mr Pete
#1 seal puller, that roll pin must help with the pulling, its a nice one tho. other 2 not sure last one maybe a grout cutter
Number 4 looks like an Osborne strap cutting too. It is used to cut leather into strips of various sizes. 1-3, parts for the scrap pile?
Have a good day.
where is 95b?
I just filmed it today
No 4 is a leather strap cutter. Traditional design but pretty poor at doing the job. I threw mine out and bought a much better type.
3-spring compressor
4- metal or glass scribe
#4 is for cutting strips of leather. No idea on the rest of the tools.
Item # 1 is a seal puller of some kind.
#4 is a leather strap cutter...
Do u still got your lock picking tools?
The answer is in this video that will be released on Sunday.
What’s in the mystery tool cabinet?
Abe Lincoln's pistol is a leather striper. It allowed you to cut strips of leather to certain widths.
