Another tip from a cosmetic scientist: A lot of people blame aloe on flash drying when they see a product with aloe in it. But mostly, it is the charge on the cationic cream & the anionic gel. That is what usually feels like "flash drying" when you are using products. I see that people use a cream that is + charge & then they use a hair gel that is (-) charge & it feels like the gel just soaked up the water or aka flash drying. In this situation, it's not the aloe, it's the charges on the two products.
My hair hates most natural products especially ones with aloe. My skin also. But I had my suspicions about this. I tried a patch test with aloe from a plant and had no problem. I put it in my hair no problem. That told me it was one of the preservatives because I used straight aloe gel from Walmart…ewwww! Even my skin itches and reacted to it. So my blaming of the aloe was misplaced. I do use it on my hair and have a dedicated plant for it. ❤
idk if you've heard this from anyone else, or tried it yourself, but your CFG is AMAZING for dry refreshes! I put a little in my hands, emulsify, & do what I call a little finger twirl ( a very lazy finger coil on dry hair lol) on any curls that have lost their family or just started to misbehave. Then I very quickly hit those pieces w/ the diffuser & voila! it often looks even better than wash day!!💜💜💜
Mell taught me that there is a proper way to utilize aloe vera in a hair routine, PRIMARILY for permanent dye and there isn't really much used otherwise because you run the risk of flash drying, making the hair stiff to the touch and very frizzy
This explains a lot, I got an aloe Vera leave in conditioner with a brand I loved and trusted and I noticed my hair felt wiry corse and dry even though my products were hydrating, I didn’t know what was happening, then I forgot it while travelling and my hair was so much better without it that’s when I realised it was my conditioner
I use aloe vera every other day and it has helped my hair that I've noticed. I cut the plant, soak it in the water for about an hour ,drain, peel the leaf ,blend it in the blender, put in a strainer and strain it(I do this twice) add olive oil and avocado oil(about a teaspoon of each)put it in a squirt bottle and store it in the refrigerator.
I have used aloe Vera on my curly hair and it came out with very good results - my hair looked shiner, healthier and so voluminous. So, final verdict for me - it's okay for my hair :) cheers:)
So weird - my hair is high porosity due to extreme color lightening and aloe vera is the only ingredient that I have issues with. Immediate flash drying. It's manageable if it's not at the top of the list but lately it's in everything :-( Love this hair color on you omg.
Great video as always, Mel! I've been researching this quite a bit for a similar video and just never have been able to crack the "why" for flash drying with such little research studies out there on curls. Wondering if you have any thoughts on the science behind why it happens. Do you think it's too much of the "film" making the hair just feel stiff, almost like buildup?
Hi despite having high porosity hair (very dry, menopausal, course textured, 2c/3a) my hair is not great with aloe - it does cause flash drying on me. Truthfully my skin doesn't like it much either. I'm not allergic to it and in small amounts it's fine (both hair and skin), but if it's high up on the INCI list I get flash drying on the hair and sensitivity on the skin. Best wishes.
Great video Mell. I knew to stay away from the yellow liquid but not how to remove it. I use aloe from my plant for my face but didn’t try hair yet. Love the information and your humor. Hang in there with your wrist!
Happy Texture Tuesday!! I've always wondered this! I always have a problem with my low porosity hair whenever I use anything with aloe. Thanks so much!! Much love and happiness!! Xoxo 😘
Mell, could you do a video on the going back to basics for when your hair just won't behave? I try step by step following your tutorials and my hair is still stiff, dry and frizzy and never soft and shiny!
Also I hope you know how much you have helped me on my curl journey! I have spent the last while spending half my day watching and rewatching your videos and they have helped so much! Thanks for all you do!
Mel, you bring happiness and good vibes to my seriously hard life. My hair has become my only means of self care, as a solo mom to my 4 yr old with autism. It's given me self esteem, and your great attitude and scientific humor truly has helped me. Life is so hard so a little laughter while learning helps. Thank you.. ❤️
I hadn't ever thought of Aloe Vera for my hair until I received a sample for Bondi Boost. Their repair range has been game changing for my scalp and curls!
My hair seems to absolutely love products that are high in aloe (the Treluxe range, Uncle Funky’s Daughter)…but my mum gets dry and brittle results from products high in coconut! Do you have a video on the effects of coconut oil, Mell? 😄
I was JUST looking for products without aloe vera and it is harder than I thought to avoid the stuff. I've used several gels/souffles/shampoos with it as a star ingredient and have ended up with drier hair and Aloe is besties with Glycerin, it would seem so that's another hard one to avoid. I live in a hard-water zone of Calif. plus in the summer it is dry and in the rainy season we're inside with the heater and it ends up also dry. I finally turned a corner by clarifying with Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Shampoo -- I'd forgot what soft hair felt like! I'm also using as leave-in conditioner either B&B's Invisible Oil (has coconut) or Davines' OI All In One Milk (hate the smell but it doesn't last). THank you for the recommendations!
Thank you for yet 🎉Another HELPFUL video! I was scrubbing my pantry, and learning from you at the same time! I’m currently using a combination of CurlSmith products and As I am Curling Jelly. However, I can’t wait to try your new Verb product!! Whoohoo! 🥳
I'm new here...and i have a cpl of questions... How do you feel about putting oil on your hair if it's dry? And do you have any fragrance free sensitive shampoo recommendations that are actually good? Like not ruining my dry fine curly hair and turning it into a dry matted not so curly mess? Thank youuuuu!
Girl I’m only 57 seconds into this video and the puns got me rolling !!! Lol. Idk how easily these came to you but great job with them !! Okay shhhh 🤫 lemme finish watching 😂😂
Lol I live for your puns. Hope you are doing okay. And as always thank you for your very informative videos! You are the real MVP of the curly community
Hi Mell. Just wanna say that I can’t thank you enough for all your wisdom and videos. I’ve been following you for a little while now and LOVE you and Amanda… and ponytail mom.. lol. You have helped me take such better care of my hair and understand it. I get compliments just about everyday from people telling me how beautiful my hair is. I owe it all to you ♥️. Thank you
Great video! My hair likes Aloe Vera in the products but I’ve never used it alone. Luckily no flash drying BUTttt…..I had a flash drying using a clay mask/wash that was pretty severe. Wondering what your thoughts are on products with clay, the different clays etc?
Are shampoos and conditioners with aloe vera (ex. Maui moisture) fine for low porosity hair? If not, what shampoo and conditioner do you recommend for low porosity curlies?
Lol aloe and me sometimes get along. Will have to reference this when I want to use something with it. Also…. The hair coloring mask!! What is it…. Yes do a video! Lol
hello everyone! I hope you can help me with this .. my hair is fine, low porosity. So, the real problem is, one side of my hair is curly ( 3a-3b curls ), while the other side is straight with a slight wave.. is there a way to fix it? It can be really frustrating :( Any advice helps! Stay safe everyone and have a great day! And Mell, hope your wrist heals soon 🤍
I’m glad mell share her information. She does mention that some low porosity hair will feel fast drying on their hair. My past experiences when I use aloe Vera with alcohol ingredients on dry hair or little damp made my hair super dry also greasy when I play wrong way after the gel and still my hair damp 😅(ya never doing that again) As for my low porosity hair it’s work fine when I style it wet hair using cream then glaze aloe Vera on top as a gel but without drying alcohol . However I experiment only indoor. if I go outside with high humidity it will not stay hold longer on my hair. At day two I have halo fizz I use aloe Vera 92% form miniso I’m glad that my hair love aloe Vera. I got scared that I have to find Aloe Vera free products. It made my hair sooooo soft with so much bounce and little shine. I have medium density and corse hair. I hope this comment help a lot of u to try whether it work or not.
My favorite line right now would have to be a curl can dream by Matrix. The best shampoo and conditioner I have ever tried for my curls 👌🏽. Boss bounce cream by Quidad. All zero aloe.
Mel can you review Virtue labs preferably the restorative shampoo conditioner and restorative mask? They also have a curl line / styling products... My hair is damaged af ❤️ your videos
Hey Mell! I have fine/medium curly hair that is very long and seems to be weighed down. Would cutting it help? Also would layers be a good option? If so what kind? Hope you are doing well and your wrist heals soon! 💖
I’ve missed Scientiffy Melly! You’re not supposed to put on aloe straight from the leaf?! 😲 Everyone I knew growing up, including me, it was go snap a leaf off & squeeze it onto the burn. I thought the irritation was the burn. Thanks for explaining all of this. If I’m using something with aloe, it needs to be low on the list. I had a spray leaf in conditioner 😁 with aloe as one of the first few ingredients & major flash dry! I had to add so much extra water to my hair. Thank you for mentioning it once when you were going through ingredients on an Amazon live. I do okay with Verb & Curlsmith seems to always do well for me. My 2 holy grails are the Miracle Shield from Curlsmith & the Manes x Mell Curl Foaming Gell from Verb. I’m not kissing up. I seriously love it. I cried when I found out you made it fragrance free. I knew it greatly reduced my chance if an allergy. You have such a heart for inclusion & those who are often forgotten. Thank you. 💜 I hope your wrist heals fast! On the Aloe for skin. Years ago my BFF, her sister, & me all were half asleep one day in their pool. We could give her SPF 100 & she’d likely burn. I now cringe at the tanning oil her sister & I would use. My BFF fell asleep with one arm up & the other with her hand on her stomach. She was wearing a 2 piece. her 1 underarm was burned & she had a handprint on her stomach. She sets foot in her grandma’s house & it was “go get an aloe leaf, now!” It was hilarious, until I got a burn. 🤦🏻♀️
As someone with dreadlocks; I use AV quite a bit. I tend to stick it in with rose water and spray it into my hair, seem to work. I buy it in a tub, but am interested in buying a plant - how long did you soak it for before using?
Hey Mel, I have to wear my hair in a hair net for work everyday and I don't know what to do with my hair. Should I braid it every day? I could wear a scarf instead of the hair net but if I do that then how do I put my hair underneath? Can you help me figure this out?
Happy texture Tuesday 😁 Ha, I was going to ask what special effect you were using to make Scientify Mell's hair darker 🤣. I have never used raw aloe on my hair but I think I will give it a try this week.
I've heard a tonne about using aloe as a styling gel or leaving it in, but whenever I do that, my hair become VERY static-y Like, even my body hair! It's just cracking and sticking to everything I still haven't been able to understand why that happens, so anyone with suggests, please comment!
I would love to do a bit on best ways to recover from flash drying! After hearing this I realized I have been suffering from this for a long time, I’ll definitely be investigating the products I am using 😅
Have you or Mel tried Curlmix products. I just watched Bianca Renee trying it out. Would love your opinion on it too. Her hair looked so good. I never tried aloe on my hair that I know off but my curls seem to hate anything with protein. My hair is a fussy thing. Lol
Hi Mell! I’ve not had flash drying from aloe vera before but did experience something that I think was that from 2 different protein free deep conditioners Twist Sunday Feels and Not Your Mother’s. I couldn’t figure it out since I didn’t find that they had much in common. It was like my hair seized up as soon as I put it on while in the shower. All I could do was rinse out and use another conditioner. Thoughts??
Hey Mel!! My hair LOVES protein but HATES aloe! Riddle me that! It gives me flash drying for sure - weirdest feeling ever lol. Thankfully it’s not an allergy because I get bored and distracted half way through the ingredients and stop reading.
Hi Mell! New to your channel. I have permed 3A 3B high porosity hair. I absolutely love my perm but still battling frizz at the top of my head that I cannot tame for the life of me. Any suggestions?
I think it's a waste of time to put natural aloe gel on my hair and skin. I just use a bottle of aloe vera gel from my local store and it's made my hair and skin super soft, and my acne has gone down a bit. I think the percentage of aloe in the product is important. Some people have said online that products with aloe listed higher up in the ingredient risk has caused irritation while products with aloe listed lower in the ingredient list works fine for them.
@@zarahlu My kids are like " it's not even funny mom! Please stop reminding it!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣I'm like " Hey! You shoosh!!!! There aren't many people like her in this world!!! You just don't get it!!! "🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
i get this 99.7% aloe gel that only has citric acid & one other preservative in it & LOVE it for my skin! I put it on my whole body (but my face & hair) immediately after getting out of the shower, THEN apply lotion & it's made a world of difference for my dry skin. But yeah, the smell is gross. To me it smells like the mustache of like an older dude with a really bushy, walrus like mustache. Sorta like an unwashed scalp+sebum+dried sweat w/a touch of rotten vegetation. haven't done the hair thing with it yet, so I can't wait to watch!
They look best when I DONT TOUCH THEM! No shellac, no nothing! The worst thing I could do to my nails that always sends me down a spiral is when I get them done at the salon and they use the nail file across my nail plate. RUINED!
Wish i could use aloe vera. I use to love the eva nyc hair cream then they changed the formula and it contained aloe vera which is a big no for me since i live in dry cold&hot climate.
Unrelated to the video, but have you tried the brand bhave? I just started using their products and they’re amazing! I haven’t seen a single person talk about them, I’d love to know your opinion on their products!
Cool video, Mel! All these plants and foods etc, just do not work for me in it's PURE FORM. They usually dry my hair out. As an ing. only, not to bad. It can't be high in "the list" though. Thank you for sharing ❣️ P.S. Enjoy the movie!!! I'm a horror fan, are you too?
It's a lengthy comment but please help me out :( I always feel if I strip away all the oils of my scalp my scalp over compensates by releasing a lot of oil(just likemy facial skin) and then within 2 days I'll get flakes which are somewhere between a dry flake and dandruff like it's paper thin and dry in appear but when I rub it on my palms it becomes oily also in this way my tresses are also oily From this I came to a conclusion that if a use a very stripping shampoo or even a normal gentle dandruff shampoo my scalp becomes overly oily very quick and if I use a non dandruff non stripping shampoo it to doesn't help with the flakes Also I have a lot of breakage in my hair because I avoid conditioner (becauseit makes my hair limp)and my hair becomes brittle and I have been facing breakage near the crown area since the past 2 weeks ..I am sure it's not hairfall as there is no thinking of hair or widening of scalp partitions but I really need your help to guide me through this conundrum I no longer want to sport a brushed out airy hair look and be called an upside down broom and I hate hiding my hair in a bun. My hair type is low porosity hair and it's normally has low elasticity and is dry and when I condition it, becomes a medium elasticity Scalp type I have a major doubt in dehydrated scalp that produce oily when completely stripped of everything or it is an oily scalp with minor dandruff Wearing my hair curly has been one of my biggest goals please help me Please help me You have answered me before but I still have many doubts mell
Oil and flakes together is not uncommon, you might have seborrheic dermatitis. Probably your scalp would be oily regardless of the shampoo you used. I’d try Selsun Gold, or Blue if you can’t find, and use it for a few weeks at least. Find a very light conditioner like VO5 and condition the ends of your hair and parts with breakage. Intact hair is worth some limpness in my opinion.
@@sisterursuline well I don't think I have seb dermatitis coz my scalp isn't itchy at all neither is it inflamed Also I did condition hair it became limp but my hair breakage stopped within 24 hours :)
Does anyone know what shampoo would be good for A Male with semi long curly hair ? I thought aloe vera shampoo would be good by urban hydration , thanks
I will say to the screen at least once when watching, she so crazy 😂💜 now onto aloe vera, whenever my hair is loving a product I can guarantee AV is in the first 3 ingredients.
Does flash drying cause static?
You should make a video on the use of aloe Vera! :)
So what should you do instead of you need to use a cream and gel?
Happy texture Tuesday 🤓
Hi Amanda!!! Have a great day!!! 😁💖
After this, I’m going to aloi myself today
I love your darker hair so much!!!

I'm low porosity and so is my daughter; our hair loves aloe but hates coconut oil, so I really avoid products that have it.
Any brand/product recommendations without coconut oil? Thanks!

Hey Mel, I have to wear my hair in a hair net for work everyday and I don't know what to do with my hair. Should I braid it every day? I could wear a scarf instead of the hair net but if I do that then how do I put my hair underneath? Can you help me figure this out?
Typo, the hair net is not the problem it’s the mask with elastic band that I’m concerned about
Happy texture Tuesday 😁
Ha, I was going to ask what special effect you were using to make Scientify Mell's hair darker 🤣. I have never used raw aloe on my hair but I think I will give it a try this week.
Scientiffy Melly!!!
Thanks scientify Mel❣️What’s your thoughts on fyi flax gel?
Just picked up the verb foam today can’t wait to try it
What is this color mask? It’s gorgeous!!!!!
I looked up the foaming gel and it has fragrance in the ingredient list 🤔
I LOVE your videos!!!! i am trying to recover my curls after years of bleach!! i love all your information and content.
I've heard a tonne about using aloe as a styling gel or leaving it in, but whenever I do that, my hair become VERY static-y
Like, even my body hair! It's just cracking and sticking to everything
I still haven't been able to understand why that happens, so anyone with suggests, please comment!
Lol
Hi Mell! I’ve not had flash drying from aloe vera before but did experience something that I think was that from 2 different protein free deep conditioners
Twist Sunday Feels and Not Your Mother’s. I couldn’t figure it out since I didn’t find that they had much in common. It was like my hair seized up as soon as I put it on while in the shower. All I could do was rinse out and use another conditioner. Thoughts??
Can't use Aloe, I'm allergic to it. I suffer with flash drying and its weirdly on one side of my head😢
Hey Mel!! My hair LOVES protein but HATES aloe! Riddle me that! It gives me flash drying for sure - weirdest feeling ever lol.
Thankfully it’s not an allergy because I get bored and distracted half way through the ingredients and stop reading.
I love this color on you ❤️ ❤️ 💕
Hi Mell! New to your channel. I have permed 3A 3B high porosity hair. I absolutely love my perm but still battling frizz at the top of my head that I cannot tame for the life of me. Any suggestions?
Will you Verb product be available in the UK soon Mel?🙏🙏🙏
I think it's a waste of time to put natural aloe gel on my hair and skin. I just use a bottle of aloe vera gel from my local store and it's made my hair and skin super soft, and my acne has gone down a bit. I think the percentage of aloe in the product is important. Some people have said online that products with aloe listed higher up in the ingredient risk has caused irritation while products with aloe listed lower in the ingredient list works fine for them.
Just watched that part again!! Soooo good!!! Hahahahahahahahah! I guess I'm the one for you Mell!!! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Haha, I had to repeat it too
@@zarahlu My kids are like " it's not even funny mom! Please stop reminding it!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣I'm like " Hey! You shoosh!!!! There aren't many people like her in this world!!! You just don't get it!!! "🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I come for the hair tips. I stay for the hilarious punns! okay? So never stop being you!
i get this 99.7% aloe gel that only has citric acid & one other preservative in it & LOVE it for my skin!
Can you please make a video about your nail care 💅 Because your nails look amazing 👏
They look best when I DONT TOUCH THEM! No shellac, no nothing! The worst thing I could do to my nails that always sends me down a spiral is when I get them done at the salon and they use the nail file across my nail plate. RUINED!
I so love getting my nails all dipped and tipped, but it’s sooo bad for them. Yet I do it anyway. 🥹🤣
Wish i could use aloe vera. I use to love the eva nyc hair cream then they changed the formula and it contained aloe vera which is a big no for me since i live in dry cold&hot climate.
Loved your video, you did great using just one hand. Hope to see you soon😊
Thanks for doing this video!
My pleasure!💖
Your dark hair looks great! Tell us what color mask you used please!
Yes please
amen
I want to know too! 😊
Thank you for sharing ❣️
P.S. Enjoy the movie!!! I'm a horror fan, are you too?
It's a lengthy comment but please help me out :(
I always feel if I strip away all the oils of my scalp my scalp over compensates by releasing a lot of oil(just likemy facial skin) and then within 2 days I'll get flakes which are somewhere between a dry flake and dandruff like it's paper thin and dry in appear but when I rub it on my palms it becomes oily also in this way my tresses are also oily
From this I came to a conclusion that if a use a very stripping shampoo or even a normal gentle dandruff shampoo my scalp becomes overly oily very quick and if I use a non dandruff non stripping shampoo it to doesn't help with the flakes
Also I have a lot of breakage in my hair because I avoid conditioner (becauseit makes my hair limp)and my hair becomes brittle and I have been facing breakage near the crown area since the past 2 weeks ..I am sure it's not hairfall as there is no thinking of hair or widening of scalp partitions but I really need your help to guide me through this conundrum I no longer want to sport a brushed out airy hair look and be called an upside down broom and I hate hiding my hair in a bun.
My hair type is low porosity hair and it's normally has low elasticity and is dry and when I condition it, becomes a medium elasticity
Scalp type I have a major doubt in dehydrated scalp that produce oily when completely stripped of everything or it is an oily scalp with minor dandruff
Wearing my hair curly has been one of my biggest goals please help me
Please help me
You have answered me before but I still have many doubts mell
Oil and flakes together is not uncommon, you might have seborrheic dermatitis. Probably your scalp would be oily regardless of the shampoo you used. I’d try Selsun Gold, or Blue if you can’t find, and use it for a few weeks at least.
Find a very light conditioner like VO5 and condition the ends of your hair and parts with breakage. Intact hair is worth some limpness in my opinion.
@@sisterursuline well I don't think I have seb dermatitis coz my scalp isn't itchy at all neither is it inflamed
Also I did condition
hair it became limp but my hair breakage stopped within 24 hours :)
I watched a video that contained Aloe and red onions to use for sparse hair and rejuvenate growth. I need serious help in that department.
