    I think all the appliances she sells are just rebranded generic versions. I've seen that shape AirFryer and Kettle everywhere with all different brand names on it, and Drew just made a few different colors and slapped their logo on it. I can see the appeal. The colorway of these products is much more appealing than the glossy black plastic the generic versions come in.

    I believe the 3 settings are used to assert your dominance on the coffee machine.
    If you set it to Bold, the machine has to respect you more, because you're telling it how Bold you are.
    On Regular, the machine might disobey you because it doesn't think you're Gourmet enough to use it.

    Nice little review!
    My sister actually owns this machine in Black. I can say that the screen isn't hard to read on the Black coffee maker. Maybe the Green & White ones are too light in color to see the touch screen?
    My biggest gripe is when you pour the last bit of coffee out of the carafe, the lid swings loose and gets drops of coffee everywhere. Real pain to clean up the counter every time.

    • @angelwales9138
      @angelwales9138 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      if it is a colour based issue and not an individual machine issue... well that's just a flaw in how it works. If they can't make the touchscreen visible enough on lighter colours, that's an issue. either make all the touchscreen parts the same colour or make the lights brighter. Watching morgan's video and reading your comment it sounds like the idea is there, but not the quality and details, and it feels like it was just thrown together based on maybe what Drew likes, but... without the quality being cared about. Like the lid swinging loose, the colour and touch screen, the bits not being flush or fitted properly.... doesn't sound great

      You could hold your hand on top of the lid when pouring the last bit of coffee. Not ideal, but it is common on many different kettles. Also on normal teapots, where you have to hold a hand on the lid when pouring the last bit of tea.

I’m wondering if whatever happened to hers to make the plastic warped and the lid not shut fully if that messed with the screen display and mayyyybe because the screen isn’t right her coffee boldness settings were affected as well? Like maybe the screen couldn’t register what settings she was trying to set. Just a thought.

    It might be possible that you could taste the difference with a paper filter.
    All it does is probably limit the waterflow to get a higher extraction, but because these reusable filters have bigger holes the coffee just goes through the filter the same speed regardless of setting

    • @7heRedBaron
      @7heRedBaron ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A paper filter absorbs a lot of the oils from the grounds which can upset many people’s stomach’s. It will also filter out the finer grounds that will make it through the screen filters. Experienced drinkers won’t pour out the last drops out of the bottom of the pot because the worst of the coffee settles out in the bottom.

If they're signifantly brighter than those of the coffee maker, of course the display will be hard to read, because the ambient light the display reflects into your eyes or the camera will outshine the light coming from the display itself. Direct sunlight being reflected from the display would probably have the same effect. If the coffeemaker is not sitting in bright sunlight, or under filming lights, the display should a lot more readable.

      I actually like the kettle a lot for what it is. It lets you manually enter a target temperature and it has a temperature read out. Mine is within 5 degrees of what my food thermometers read so it's relatively accurate. The manual control can act as an offset to both compensate for the thermometer being slightly off and for the kettle slightly overshooting the target temperature. For example if you tell it to heat to 180, it will shut off at 180 but there is still excess heat in the hot heating element and by the time the temperature stops rising, it plateaus at about 194 so I tell it to heat to 170 and it reliably peaks at 184 which is actually 180 according to my separate food thermometers. It would be better if it just peaked at the temperature you set, but with how heating works, it would have to heat the water much more slowly and gently. It might be able to do it more aggressively if it used induction heating to heat the entire vessel instead of a conventional resistive element in the bottom to heat only from the bottom but that would drastically increase the price. For it to do this while heating as fast as it does, it would probably need software that figures things out over time and gradually learns the timing in order to predict when to shut off in order to plateau at the target temperature which seems above it's pay grade. I expect that there are kettles that can do this but they're probably much more expensive. That seems like something a "smart" kettle would do that you have to connect to your phone with Bluetooth.
      Most of the kettles I found looking around that are the same price didn't even seem to have the ability to manually enter a temperature, they only let you boil water, or if they have settings for lower temperatures like for different kinds of tea, they're just presets. You have to pay a bit more to get the same kind of temperature control features. The ones that I can find online that are about 15 to $20 more expensive that have manual temperature settings have a gooseneck, which is good for pour over, but not every brewing method benefits from a gooseneck.

Since it's branded through Walmart it's probably for Walmart coffee. I know next to nothing about the coffee brewing process but I'm trying to learn. I very well could be wrong

    • @Ron50M
      @Ron50M 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The instruction booklet should be much more informative if brands or grinds make a difference. The fit and finnish issues tell you that this is a cheap import with a "B" glued on the front, so deduct about 30% for the celebrity name and another 20% for the exclusive designer colors and you have just another inexpensive appliance. Personally I wouldn't leave it plugged in when not in use for fear of spontaneous combustion. Also, why wasn't the unreadable touch screen noticed and corrected in R&D ?

    • @auroramcbride1688
      @auroramcbride1688 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ron50M yeah it really does look like a cheaply made product I was just taking a shot in the dark guess if the booklet didn't elaborate. As for the touch screen if it's not universal may be a problem of a green product and green numbers and letters not working together and could potentially be like a little more readable on darker units but I doubt it would improve much. I'm just trying to think of all possible avenues to stretch my benefit of the doubt.

    • @MrAranton
      @MrAranton 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ron50M I think the unreadable touch screen might be a result of the setting. It takes a lot of light to film, so there's a good chance the lights Morgan set up to be visible to the camera drown out the light from the touch screen. To make matters worse, the surface of the touchscreen seems to be reflective, so the brighter the ambient lighting is, the less readable the screen will be. In a kitchen is not also a filming studio the display is probably perfectly readable.
      And as to brands and grinds: If I designed a coffee-machine to be sold based on celebrety endorsement alone (and/or wrote the manual for it), I'd go with the assumption that the vast majority prospective buyers are not going coffee nerds and keep things simple. The whole point of a machine like this is that the customers buy the illusion - or rather delusion - that they're getting a piece of Drew Barrymore's fame by buying her kitchen appliances, and that the products must be good because her name is on them. That's why they included the water filter, the touch screen and the (based on Morgan's review) fake settings: To give the impression this is a sophisticated machine and a much bigger step up from your basic 20 buck brewer than it actually is. Customers who don't see through that are not likely bother with details about coffee making. Adding this sort of information will only confuse such customers and detract from illusion/delusion they just paid 60 bucks for.

    It is really great how optimistic and positive you are about a sub par coffee machine that a famous person put their branding on. Though as far as coffee settings go, I am guessing the machine does nothing different just a placibo affect. If you think the coffee is stronger or better via a setting then it can make your brain taste things you associate with stronger or better coffee. Maybe next time do a blind taste test?
    Regardless great video, the new camera looks to be doing a treat. Better focus and less orange now.

      i would guess anyone buying a coffee machine from a celebrity walmart brand instead of a reputable one more than likely wont do an A-B or A-B-C tasting also they are very likely to use store brand dark-medium dark pre ground coffees. So these settings being a gimmick will go unnoticed in eyes of most users.

  • @Sembazuru

    Regarding filters for drip coffee makers. I've settled for myself to prefer the basket filters. They are super cheap (a couple bucks for 200), easily disposable, and a handy inexpensive source for filter paper for other tasks.
    Regarding the three strength settings. I'd like to see the brews timed (for equal volumes of water). I'm wondering if the strength is related to how quickly it dumps water onto the grounds.
    My experience of timers in drip makers isn't to tell the coffee maker when you want your coffee pot brewed, rather when you want it to start brewing. (I think you had the timing backwards in your description.) It's up to the user to know how long the amount brewed takes at the desired strength setting and do the math themselves. The coffee makers really don't know how much water they've been given and will simply keep brewing for as long as it has water. (I suppose some have timers to keep the brewing from going on in perpetuity if someone rigs up an endless water supply, but I doubt that amount of engineering time as been put into the cheap coffee makers.)

    Oh my goodness, it’s a drip coffee machine! Those are completely unheard-of in New Zealand, we generally have espresso machines at home, or maybe a plunger.

    • @zacharyreed2347

      I know this was nearly a year ago, but is that actually the case? Do New Zealanders often have home espresso machines? I'm studying coffee cultures/customs/norms all around the world and haven't looked into New Zealand yet

    • @NZKiwi87
      @NZKiwi87 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zacharyreed2347 yes, it’s pretty normal. We’ve got a $180 Breville that we use daily for espresso. We heat a cup of milk in the microwave for 90 seconds and then add espresso and voilà :)
      Many others have plungers (I think Americans call it a French press).
      And it would be a VERY rare household in New Zealand that didn’t have a kettle. Electric jugs (as we call them) are in 99% of homes.

    You own a great coffee maker in the Bonivita. 1) It has a double walled vacuum sealed pot that doesn't require a heating pad, famous for ruining the taste of coffee, the build alone keeps the coffee warm. 2) you have highly regulated heater that brews your coffee at a "set" temperature. 3) Your machine has a "shower head" arrangement so as to first infuse, then "shower" the grinds with dispersed water. Cheap crappy machines have a heating plate that ruins the coffee if the cheap glass pot is left on it. Cheap machines dispense the water through one hole, not a shower arrangement but more a garden hose style which creates uneven wetting, channeling, and other horror show scenarios. And the cheap machines don't have a great control over the heat when brewing. As soon as I saw the heating plate and cheap glass container, I knew this machine was doomed.

    I also have this coffee maker. The top lid is interesting. It actually does stay down if you first remove the carafe, close the lid, then put the carafe back to brew. The reason it does this, from what I can tell, is when the carafe is inserted it puts pressure on the basket chamber, which in turn presses the lid up.

    Morgan, I use a bunn Velocity brewer from a few years ago purchased at Lowe's home improvement. I have worked my way through several 100 pot filters, even a six pack from Amazon of the 100 pot filters. It is only a 10 cup carafe. Glass, but I brew the coffee, and let it cool, and serve over ice, or drink it once cooled. I like the Don Francisco's Vanilla nut flavored coffee. It is good. I see the SCA likes the Bonavita, or the Technivorm. I like the ability to remove the brew container and dump out the paper filter I guess Bunn copyrighted the process. Congrats on getting the real camera to assist with your video production.
