Hellfish has a video of a version they never finished. It muted the zombies, made them walk slowly, and gave them new attack animations. Someone actually made a mod for a mod that made the zombies walk, and another one that mutes them. Pretty impressive for a 2004 Vice City mod, San Andreas is by far the easiest (and most popular) 3D era GTA to mod.
I remember when my dad came back from Russia, after visiting his parents, that he brought young me a bootleg CD of various Racing games, and a CD with GTA stuff, it had GTA 3 Real Life mod, GTA VC Killer kip, some Vice City Russian mod that added a new island, and ofc. GTA Long Night, oh boy i can remember getting some nightmares after playing that randomly, and im glad it recently gets alot of attention from either GTA Fans, GTA Speedrunners or Informative videos like yours ^^

Not many people know it, but the burning hospital mission has a long monologue from a psycho guy that you can listen to if you don't kill him right away after you get back to the top floor. In the end he will regret his life choices and ask to be killed anyway. It's kind of funny how this part of the mission never gets mentioned anywhere, because it makes this mission whole lot more interesting than it seems at first. The monologue also explains why the guy says "I'm a beautiful butterfly" when he dies. Also, there is a small secret in a RC Helicopter mission that you can find in the coffee shop, it's a photo of Fat Albert and a bunch of other characters from the show (basically just a screenshot from one of the episodes I believe), which implies that he worked at a coffee shop at one point before zombie outbreak. The hotel mission is legit beatable without exploits (I know it because I've done that myself once). The problem comes from one simple thing - the game's physics and other systems being tied to a framerate, thanks to the old hunk of jank that is RenderWare. On older systems, where game ran a lot slower, the shotgun blasts would be perfectly timed with the zombies spawning in the hallway. It's not hard to guess that on modern systems the game is running too fast and the timings are essentially screwed up for this mission. As for the nightmare sequences, there are a few that are super rare to get, one spawns you in Escobar International and has a ghost car chasing you. Another nightmare sequence spawns you on a rooftop of a gas station from Gas Run mission, you have a sniper rifle and must kill a random dude in a station wagon before he reaches the gas station, otherwise it's a game over. The way how nightmare missions are given is unclear, and must be random. So it's a gamble most of the time which nightmare sequence you get.
The camera security system in the bank and releasing the person jailed in the VCPD bureau are both from missions in the original game. Cool to see they were reused to some degree. Nice video dude.
NGL, the zombies talking give the mod some Evil Dead vibes, with how the Deadites in that series were capable of speech even as they were horrific undead creatures.
I was thinking more of Return of the Living Dead given how they are intelligent in solving problems and are capable of speech only in Long Night they can be easily killed though in hordes can overwhelm you most of the time just like in the movie.
I think it's one of the best GTA mods I've ever played. I got it on a pirate CD from a local games store. I experienced a lot of crashes too, one did not let me proceed. I went to the internet to find a solution of a problem. I learned a lot of how computer works there. Disk defragmentation helped a lot and I finished the game

I used to download this mod a lot along with others on a website as a kid, whenever the library was open I used to go in and bypass their computer timer to play this till I had to go home … time flies by 😅
This is one of the reason why overhaul mods are so cool. With time and effort yo can completely change a game into something new. It's fantastic. Also nice use of Resident Evil music.
Honestly I got a chance to finally play this a while back. Found one of the fan fixes that makes it a bit more playable on modern systems and while there were still crashes, the mod really does hold up as one of those pretty good for the time 2005 mods. I still remember seeing the trailer for it way way back in the day that used the zombies ate my neighbours theme song.
And this right here is how I got introduced to GTA Vice City. Seriously. Back in the days in my country, which is Ukraine, we were getting everything last. And a lot of stuff on the market, like video games and movies, was pirated downloaded stuff from the internet. And so, if you are buying something out there in the store, it is 100% a none licensed pirated copy of the game that you were reading about in one of the magazines. And since back then I did not had the internet, cause most of it were crap, that is how I got my own version of GTA Vice City. I simply went on buying some new games for myself and stumbled on GTA Vice City Long Night. That's right. A modded game, packed in the box like a licensed game but for a very, VERY cheap price. So I bought the game, went home and... it was not working. Game were not launching at all, giving me some error message, back then on Windows XP. And so I went back to the store where I got the game, refunded it, took back my money, got to one of my friends who had his own computer club and he simply gave me fixed version of this game. So he burned it in to one of the cheap discs that I bought, I went home, installed it and played it. And I was surprised and a bit disappointed that, this was not THE GTA game that I saw in my friend's computer club. But I played it anyway, but I never got a chance to beat it because that mission with the airplane sometimes did not worked, and other times worked but it was so hard that I just quit trying to beat it. But eventually I got actual GTA Vice City that I wanted, but it still had some mods in it. And it was called GTA Vice City Deluxe. It had modded cars, weapons, pickup objects and stuff like that. But the missions and the game itself was the actual GTA Vice City, and I played it and beat it eventually. So yeah, that is my story. p.s - Holy cow, so much memories. I didn't even know that I still remember all this until I stumbled on your video lol.
This was sold at a target store when I was a kid. Sometime 2002/early 2003. I thought it was odd that it had vice city and zombie references but no rockstar logo. There was a small time when target would somehow manage to get bootleg PC games back then next to the CDs and DVDs section. They were never in the game section
When I installed it as a kid, I remember being super scared to leave that safe area. Enough so that I stopped playing it completely. Darker weather made it really spooky for me.
I remember this mod. Back in the 2000s I was a wee lad and my neighbour asked us to install this mod he got from a pirate cd dealer. Since he didn't have Vice City at hand I brought my pirate copy and installed them both. But to our disappointment the mod was buggy. I recall that the mission where you are needed to load barrels to the car that you are dropped from a helicopter to a starting point I can't remember if it was close to the target. Anyway what is important was that the moment you are dropped from the helicopter "Dave" the soldier would start talking to himself non-stop so you couldn't do anything as the game would not give the control back to us so it was soft-locked. What a bummer but such is life. :D
i had this on a DVD back when they sold pc and ps2 disks here in Argentina, i remember not knowing how to install it so i left it, but 10 years later i found it again and played the whole 7 mods for vice city and the rip San Andreas version
Thanks for the tip btw! Got it from your last stream you did of this. Always coming in clutch with your extended knowledge of how these games tick Glad you enjoyed it! 🤘
Cant believe that is almost 20 years..I remember when I was a kid my first GTA game was Vice city. I didnt know how to play the game through but hanged around in the streets and used crazy weapons because I didnt know English at that time (I am Chinese)..And one day my classmate told me that there was such a mod that could change the whole city into a horrible zombies land..And it has its own story..That sounded alien to me...I didnt know mod things at that time.... I wondered how this mod looked like for long time..Today I saw it !! After 20 years it looks old and out date but I think it is good mod ..Dark and heavy rain cover Vice city....Challenged mission was set up..And dont forget it was launched 20 years ago!!
I remember playing this mod back in the day, I was like 7 years old. I don't remember how I was able to put my little hands in such a lost midia back in the day
I remember playing this mod summer in the mid-2000s. It was really creepy dreamlike vibe seeing a familiar city turned into this and when you tune on the radio there was only one station left and playing what I thought was a lonely sounding version of All Along the Watchtower. Does anyone know who sang that version? I looked for it back then.
This mod should be a crossed mod just from the fact that the zombies are not even zombies but people that are infected and can still talk but are just batshit insane crazies.
The Biker Gangs being another extra enemy is very reminiscent of Dawn of the Dead, which had something similar in one scene of the movie where a couple of Bikee Gangs want to claim the Mall for themselves. This Mod actually has a lot of Dawn of the Dead vibes! (Guess it makes sense, anything zombie related is bound to have some George Romero DNA in it XD)
I remember this mod, don't remember where I got it from, though, either a bootleg CD or a modding site. Anyway, when I installed it, I hated how overwhelming the zombies were, so I deleted it and never looked back. Watching this review, it's kind of a shame, because it genuinely looks cool.
Give it another shot! It's a fantastic mod. The zombies are very overwhelming but the story missions dull them out enough to where it's a fair fight, 'cept the last few.The open world stuff is where it gets crazy
I had the chance to play it way back when I was a kid but it always was crashing at the first level and It was really hard, this mod is really creative and full of great things that were rarely found with mods like a pieced-out story and good story telling
The vice city engine is already buggy so playing with two additional camera mods on top of Long Night is just begging it to crash constantly. Leaving a character in jail wasn't a softlock. The intent was to have optional characters; think Yuffie or Vincent in FF7. The cast of characters on the yacht could change based on the decisions you made during the game. This was all built with Barton Waterduck's Mission Builder - a fairly primitive opcode editor. There was a lot of scouring code from all the official Rockstar games, breaking backup copies of the game, and sheer force of will. There were multiple version releases of the mod. One of the earlier, buggier ones had the widest spread unfortunately. The opcode to silence the pedestrians was found while working on Defamation of Character: A Jack Thompson Murder Simulator. You should give that one a go.
Thank you so much for the insight!! And thank you for the wonderful work you did on this project, it's a testament of its time in the modding community. Plus that makes a lot more sense with the "softlock" thing I mentioned. The fact that it's a feature is something I hadn't realized so thank you for pointing that out. I figured the camera mods were definitely a big part in the crashes I had, but I still ran into quite a bit when I ran it vanilla about a year ago. I'll keep that one in mind!
Yeah, the readme file includes advice to save often. There was no way to optimize code back then so there were many ugly background layers of flag checks and loops running. For example, there's an array creating zombies at randomized XY coordinates so they don't always run in straight lines like the turf gangs in San Andreas did. Then a control switch for when that is supposed to be running or not. Cutscenes have a ton of tricks happening. A proper IDE would clear the memory instead of leaving all the little leaks that build up. Primitive times without a kofi or patreon, much less a file host for fifty megabytes or a TH-cam for a fraps trailer video.
Man i remember playing this one when i was a kid and being scared shitless because of the save menu, it had a zombie eating an infant as the background art
I remember we had a disk of this mod back in 2009-2010, and holy, I was like 9-10, and I couldn't finish the gas track mission, just dropped the game XD But the atmosphere was terrifying as hell for me
my favorite part of this mod is the radio stations, every station except V-ROCK is either static or some emergency morse code transmissions, it's very atmospheric. and the V-ROCK song covers made by the developers are both hilarious and dreadful
Hellfish has a video of a version they never finished. It muted the zombies, made them walk slowly, and gave them new attack animations. Someone actually made a mod for a mod that made the zombies walk, and another one that mutes them.

[which makes sense as prior to the wide spread of the internet 3.0 where the internet entered almost every house in some way shape or form, the only real way to play stuff like this was from flea markets, like Pokémon chaos black one of the oldest rom hack that was never fully completed by the og team it was almost always found at flea markets on sale for cheap.]
this is soo good, pretty much a guideline on how to make an open world zombie game on its basics
I wish I wasn’t too stupid to understand modding and programming. Making mods like this seems like it was a lot of fun back in the day
Wow! I haven't thought about this in a long long time! I remember watching early TH-cam and being hooked!
I used to download this mod a lot along with others on a website as a kid, whenever the library was open I used to go in and bypass their computer timer to play this till I had to go home … time flies by 😅
Dude how tf do u only have 2k subs, you deserve more with the quality of ur vids,u earned my sub,and I look forward for your new vids
This was my first ever GTA experience on PC (bought the bootleg cd as a child) and it was awesome
2:46 Oh, duuuude… Jerma reference?!?! haha 😆 SICK. You thought that’d go unnoticed??
This is one of the reason why overhaul mods are so cool. With time and effort yo can completely change a game into something new. It's fantastic. Also nice use of Resident Evil music.
This mod was really cool. It even reminds me of the original Dawn of the dead movie
The Fighting Hell Fish Sound Like Opposite The Freaking Opposite Grandpa Homer Simpson From The Simpson Cartoon Show Cartoon Universe 🇺🇸💪🏻⚓️🪖👽🛸
This is seriously very cool. The jank almost makes it feel like a weird backrooms version of VC
I like the little sound clips and effects you edited in. Most youtubers make them too loud or play into them too much so the restraint is nice
This mod have a secuel called Liberty City Long Night, you should try it :D
nice vid btw
It's on my list! Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
I’m surprised no one mentioned the pause screen background photo
Mod looks to offer Romero’s Day of the Dead vibes. Very cool, and great video too!
The YT algorithm really likes this video, no matter how much I refresh this still pops up. I guess I'll watch.
Yeah YT really just said "it's time" with this one. Really happy though, one of my favorite videos I've worked on so far. Hope you enjoy!
YOOOO ASHES 2063 SOUNDTRACK LETS GOOOO
i remember when i used to search eveywhere because i didnt know what was a mod back then, but now im creating my own mod, its hard if you ask me.
Are you modding vice city?
as a teen back then, the story for being a mod is top notch and captures the GTA writing
man i really thought this was an official game when i found this game in YT when i was still a child
We should email the developers of this mod to make another GTA long night zombie mod.
i had this on a DVD back when they sold pc and ps2 disks here in Argentina, i remember not knowing how to install it so i left it, but 10 years later i found it again and played the whole 7 mods for vice city and the rip San Andreas version
22:25 I'm getting Deja Vu :O
Great video :)
Thanks for the tip btw! Got it from your last stream you did of this. Always coming in clutch with your extended knowledge of how these games tick
Glad you enjoyed it!
God Left 4 Dead is still such a good game.
Man, that intro music hit me on the nostalgia bone... I miss L4D2 so much.
I have a feeling that you will review sindacco chronicles
Maybe.. 👀
This is totally the inspiration of Dead RIsing.
Brooooo i remember when fhis released! Was good times trying to get it to run. Even back then it crashed constantly.
its wild how the questlines are unique, love the decoy part, its simple but soemthign never been done in a GTA game.
Doesn’t matter where you put it the l4d theme goes hard
Agreed.
The zombies are very overwhelming but the story missions dull them out enough to where it's a fair fight, 'cept the last few.The open world stuff is where it gets crazy
oh wow! people still remember this
I had the chance to play it way back when I was a kid but it always was crashing at the first level and It was really hard, this mod is really creative and full of great things that were rarely found with mods like a pieced-out story and good story telling
Did you work with hellfish back in the day?? Bro i thought you guys completely disappeared off the face of the world
I like how these zombies have the gtavc npc animation and you can really smell them
Man i remember playing this one when i was a kid and being scared shitless because of the save menu, it had a zombie eating an infant as the background art
when a mod back in 2005 looks better and has more soul than most games from the modern era
I remember we had a disk of this mod back in 2009-2010, and holy, I was like 9-10, and I couldn't finish the gas track mission, just dropped the game XD
But the atmosphere was terrifying as hell for me
these conversion mods especially the san andreas ones are sooo dope
For the last mission it sounds like the stoner told the commander he has a plan and the commabders line is him going "oh you do, do ya?"
this is actually good
Rip Dave :(
OH NEVERMIND! WHAT A MAD LAD
my favorite part of this mod is the radio stations, every station except V-ROCK is either static or some emergency morse code transmissions, it's very atmospheric. and the V-ROCK song covers made by the developers are both hilarious and dreadful
