  • The Audi A5 Coupe was to Walter De Silva, the most beautiful car he'd ever designed. But what about the rest of it?
    First generation / Mk1, Sold from 2007 - 2016. Codename B8 / 8T. Car on test is a 2015 Audi A5 Coupe S-Line Black Edition. 2.0 diesel 177bhp
    Thanks / tbf_visuals (@tbf_visuals) for camera work on this one.

      I've had a 2012 2.0 tdi model, same as reviewed, have had it eight years and keep considering changing it, but it meets my requirements and has been entirely reliable. Just service costs, timing belt changes and tires in the 80k miles that I have covered in it. It's a lovely car and I find it difficult to justify spending an extra £25/30K to upgrade to a newer version of the same car, as this would be my choice.

      Bought one with a recently swapped 1.8TFSI engine, the engine is produced in 2021 so it shouldn't have the oil ring issues the 2008-2012 and 2012-2016 had. Before this i owned an alfa romeo, every time i fixed something on that car, something else went bad. The audi has been perfectly reliable so far. Only thing to look out for is the engine really.

    I couldn't be happier with my sportback 2.0 tdi s line. Its a 2012, still like new with 44k on the clock. 35 a year road tax, tyres reasonable too. The boot is like a living room for my dog, it's everything I needed in a car. Averaging about 55mpg on motorway, am delighted I found this car over the Octavia estates I was looking at, even though its 11 years old OR IN THIS CASE 11 YEARS NEW.

    I've got a secondhand 2014 A5 S-Line TFSI with the DCT and it is incredible. It feels luxurious but also with an agressive stance and a beautiful 220hp. It's running into some minor things for its age such as dirty injectors and what not. I bought after its first major service overhaul so it's doing well. One of the few thing I don't like about it is how quiet it is, and theres not a lot of aftermarket exhaust still being made for them may just have to go custom. The stiffer suspension is not an issue unless its the plastic speed bumps in malls, but the ride height can be annoying... sitting lower than a civic and not being able to see two cars ahead is shite but the beefy breaks help just in case.

    • @JJonCars
      @JJonCars  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! The E-Class I think is technically one level above the A5 in terms of size and price when it was new. I suspect that the Audi will probably be more affordable to run and maintain, where's the E class will make an excellent cruiser, and have a more luxury focused interior. The Audi will be a bit more sporty, probably better to drive (though front wheel drive/quattro vs rear wheel). So it does depend what sort of car you want really :)
      Personally I'd have the E Class, but I've got the old version of that car right now - the CLK. You get the pillarless windows and a seatbelt butler that hands you your seatbelt in E Class and CLK, and that for me is just priceless 😄
      If you pick one, you'll have to come back and let me know. Both great cars so you should be happy with either. Thanks for watching :)

      The front struts are at an angle so you can't go off of the position of the strut tops to determine axle location

      @@JJonCars There’s a bit of caster, but not nearly enough for the engine to be behind the front axle line. Which it isn’t, not even nearly. It is a bit further back than previous boat anchor Audis with all the weight ahead of the axle. But it’s not remotely a front kid-engine car like, say, some Ferraris or even a four or eight pot BMW.

      @@flat6croc it's a front-mid layout according to Audi themselves and the contemporary motoring press. That's where my information came from, if it's wrong I guess we best take it up with them

      @@JJonCars You’re being too credulous with the marketing material if that was indeed Audi’s claim (which I doubt somewhat in any case). And there’s no way a proper outlet like, say, Autocar, described the B8 platform as front mid engine. There’s nothing to ‘take up’ with anyone. It’s just not remotely front mid engine. It would be a stretch to call a BMW E9x platform car front mid engine, and that comfortably has the engine further back than the B8 platform. Like I said, the B8 platform was improved re engine location versus previous extremely nose heavy Audis. But it wasn’t even nearly front mid installation.

    It's funny how the "image" of these cars is rock bottom, absolute chavmobile, too often seen with privacy glass and awful rimz. But it is a beautiful design and the sense of quality much higher than an equivalent 3 series coupe. By the time these things aren't naff and the design gets the appreciation it deserves, there probably won't be many left as most are already falling into poor repair due to the declining ownership profile.

      This is true. But I think there are enough out there that there will be some nice ones available in the future, it's a mass produced car after all.

    Never cared for the coupe. German Camaro. The hatchback is way better looking.

      Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. I bet if we'd do a poll and ask people to vote which version of the B8-8.5 A5 is better looking, the coupe will come on top. The coupe looks good from every angle, whereas the sportback is not so good looking from certain angles, in my opinion. I'm in the market for a low mileage 2015+ B8.5 Audi A5 Black Edition Plus coupe with the 2.0 TFSI engine and quattro, but they are very hard to come by outside the UK. Most of this spec was sold in the UK it seems, the country where the steering wheel is on the wrong side. :))
