Mamamoo is a kpop group and all four members are Korean. MMM has been around since 2014 and they're considered to be the vocal gold standard among girl groups. Mamamoo is one of the deepest rabbit holes in kpop. They've released several dozen group, solo and subunit albums, hundreds of songs and there are hundreds of hours of terrific live performances available on yt. Imo Mamamoo is first and foremost a live group and moomoos (Mamamoo fans) will tell you they're better live than on record.
Here are the members' names in age order from eldest to youngest with their two primary responsibilities in the group:
Solar (leader, vocals): pink outfit and fluffy hat.
Moonbyul (main rapper, performance): white headband and blue jacket. Performance is their term for dance & choreo.
Wheein (vocals, performance): red bandana headband and red & white fringed jacket.
Hwasa (vocals, rapper): green top with bra on outside, jeans.
Mamamoo often mixes several genres in their songs but the main beat in Illella is reggaeton. Illella is from their Mic On EP in 2022 and it's the last single they released as a full group, followed by the My Con world tour (a pun on Mic On), which included Asia, the Pacific Islands and the US. American moomoos had been waiting for 10 years to see them in concert and MMM joined TLC, Destiny's Child and the Spice Girls as the only girl groups to sell over 70K tickets for their debut US tour. Since returning to Seoul in the summer of 2023 they've been focusing on solo and subunit records, tours and other projects such as leader Solar venturing into musical theatre and film acting. Each member has a successful solo career as well and in 2020 they became the first group to have all members chart on Billboard as solo artists while the group was still active as a unit. In 2024 two of the members (Wheein and Moonbyul) came to the US on their debut solo American tours and Hwasa will be here in March and April during her debut solo North American tour. I'll see her in Brooklyn.
To begin your journey into the MMM rabbit hole I'd recommend their live Dingo Killing Voice session, which is a medley of some of their hits from their debut single in 2014 to their latest single when the session was filmed in 2020. Another great intro to their vocal and performance skills is the Immortal Songs Medley, which was filmed at a MMM concert in 2017. If you want to start with a guide to the group and the members I think the best single video is Why Mamamoo is the Most Underrated Kpop Group. Don't be turned off by the clickbait title - it's an excellent video essay about Mamamoo. There are a couple other guides that go into more detail about the members but they're both in two parts. I'm sure moomoos will give you plenty of song recommendations along the way. Have fun!
Mamamoo is my favorite group and in korea they are considered the best of the best live vocalists. they have over 400 videos because everything they do is awesome to unbelievable that humans can sing that well live. They also do every genre, jazz, big band, blues, pop, rock, r&b, reggaeton as you see in this video, plus include music from all areas of the world. They also have solo albums that are awesome as well. Plenty of OSTs to see. They also have youtube channels, Solar is my bias and favorite singer, she is the power belter and her Solarsido channel has a whole lot of covers to see, one of the best michael jackson man in the mirror covers, this was originally done with MJs OG backup singers and band for a charity. Most people start with their Killing Voice medley as an intro to their live vocals and songs. Most will be initially shocked by the belting, the harmonies, the vast array of genres, then I Miss U comes on and people realize just how insanely talented they are vocally.
Muy buena reacción
Pick any song, title or B-side, solo unit or group, they're all good. You may not vibe with every song, but they are all well produced and well performed. All four could/would be the main vocalist in most other groups, all four can rap and all four can dance. As a group, they have more composing and or writing credits than any other female group in K-pop. Stick to their You Tube channel for MVs. A general You Tube search often gives you an identical MV, but without subs. They rarely sub their performance videos, so that's why none on this one. Enjoy your adventure. I rarely get to see anything for the first time, except for new releases. They are all quite active in their solo work.
