Much like my grandma who provided my group with cookies and a place to play. I overheard her friends asking her about whether she knows what we're doing and she basically said "Most of all I know where my kids are and what they do on a Saturday evening. DO YOU?"
      That ended the discussion.

When you said 13-15 is the age when a kid can really start believing in the tables and charts and rules, that sums it up exactly for me. I was 11 when I tried DnD the first time and it was super awkward. Fun in it's own way but awkward all the same. Years later I would be living in SUPER rural Arkansas at 14 with just my grandmother and we went into town, I had 15 minutes of free time so I ran into Hastings, and stumbled onto the Role playing Game stuff. I bought a bag of Werewolf dice and a copy of Masters of the Wild and I read that book cover to cover every day for 2 more years until I finally got invited to my first game as a teenager and I fell in love. I played 4-5 games a week, and it was the best. Now I'm lucky to find time for a game a week, and will be running one actually when I get back to America so I'm very excited I found your videos.
The end of that anecdote kind of went in a lot of directions. Anyways, great content, thanks Matt.

TBH, you really opened my eyes to some of what 4th edition has to offer. I hadn't ever tried it because I believed all the negative stuff and I'd seen some things that made me skttish. I don't think it's enough to make me want to run a 4th edition game, but that's mostly because I like 5th so much, not because I think 4th is bad anymore. I've already included some ideas from 4th in the game I'm currently running, and I introduced them by having an enemy npc use them in a fight. So, it was like a 2 for 1 bonus for last week's session. Thanks for that video, Matt!
If you like new music, check out Wintergatan. They have a TH-cam channel, too. They build some rather interesting musical implements I think you'd get a real kick out of.

This video is going alongside the 'Welcome to Dungeons and Dragons' video as one I show new players. Matt's philosophy about art and life and one's craft and how it informs his D&D game is so close to mine it is inspiring to me beyond just the DM table. Thank you Matt!

If there's one thing I really love about your channel, Matt Colville (it is not the only thing; I love MANY things about this channel), it is the respect and awareness you have for presentation in design. That's been a difficult lesson for me to learn, and you have helped to teach it.

Love the content and what you've been doing Matt. I'm 21 and have been playing D&D since I was 12/13 starting at the very tail end of 3.5. I really got into it and fell in love with the game with 4th edition (which I still love), then I played a lot of Pathfinder (which I also liked), and now starting a year or so ago with 5th edition (and it might just be my favorite edition yet). In all that time I've almost always been the DM and I absolutely love it. I have even inspired a couple of my friends & players to DM their own games. However, even with my experience I know there is ways I can improve and thats why I enjoy channels like yours. A given video may not teach me something new, but it may inspire me or to consider something I normally wouldn't. Hell, at the very least, I just find it interesting & enjoyable to listen to someone with a likeable personality talk about this hobby I adore. Anyways thanks for providing great content! I look forward to your all your future videos and wish you the best!

Matt, I wanted to thank you for investing all this time to post these great informational videos. I started playing D&D with my family when I was 8, and now that im 21, it's died down a lot, and really the only oppertunity for us to continue is if I take the mantel of DM, which is what brought me to your channel. Long story short I can't thank you enough for helping all of us understand DMing!

Just a quick thank you for all of this free content! After running my first intro game, my group are about to start my first written campaign and they are sure to (without realising it) benefit hugely from all of your advice about things like not railroading, having concurrent story arcs that continue even if the PCs don't act, skill challenges and just all the other tips and tricks. Can't wait to get them playing and see what they come up with each session. Cheers Matt :D

It is so weird to have been here long enough to think, "I hope one day Matt gets to make and release some content of his own, related to his hobby/passion." And to now be thinking, "OHMYGOSH!!! MATT IS MAKING SOMETHING AWESOME!!!"

"I guess the reason I like paladins is...it's the only class that comes with a built in narrative hook." Paladins certainly do, and it's what makes them one of the most interesting classes to me, but they're not the only one. Clerics have the same hook, but perhaps to a lesser extent in most cases, but *warlocks* have as much of a narrative hook, if not _more_ than the paladin, built in to the class, since a warlock's patron is a living, breathing entity that can come down and tell the character they have to do _this_ or _that_.

Hey Matt, this is my first youtube comment ever, but I thought you'd be happy to know that between your advice, critical roll, Reddit DnD, and other youtube shows, I did make my own homebrew game around 6 months ago. It's been going great, characters and I have both been loving it. Now, 2 of my current 6 players are making their own games. One is an evil campaign, and one is a normal, starting with Storm King's Thunder. Thank you for the inspiration, and keep up the good work. I can't wait to watch each of your videos. I am very happy to have this hobby in my life.

Hey Matt, I knew from your language that you were nerdfighter! And you mention a bit of emulating the editing style that that the Vlogbrothers have, and my one suggestion in that regard would be that some of your cuts could be tightened up like theirs have over the years. Theres a number of cuts in your video that you could shave off perhaps an eighth of a second and it would greatly improve your flow! Keep it up though, you're easily my favorite D&D/DM channels on youtube.

I love how you, Matt, were a physics guy before you became a creator. I started out thinking I was going to be a rocket scientist in elementary school and junior high, but then I realized math got me kinda depressed and so for a while I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. In high school though, I figured out that my calling was to create art, and I started writing and sketching. Currently I'm in film school and my life consists of writing, making films, freelance videography, and DMing for a couple game groups at my college. It's inspiring to know that one of the guys I see as a creative mentor has a similar story as me. I wish you the best of luck and thank you for being willing to put yourself out there on TH-cam.

My mother also tried to get my brother and I into D&D back in the early 2000's but I was way too young and my brother was at "That Age" where he didn't really want to listen to his mom tell stories for a few hours, even if he did get to kill goblins and orcs.
Anyways, I've just started DMing in the last year and I can say your videos have helped tremendously and the first few Running The Game videos really got me on the path of running adventures for my friends and having an absolute blast.
Thanks so much for your videos, you're one of the channels I have the little notification bell on for!

I firmly believe that Matt is the version of myself that never gave up playing D&D (sans beard). Got into AD&D when it first came out and our DM mixed in elements of The Empire of the Petal Throne, played 3.5, but then fell out of playing because life. Kudos to you Matt!

Your theory about what kids think of art makes sense to me. When I listened to music, I always wondered about the crafting of music, particularly the piano/keyboard, which was something very visually telling to me. I remember sitting before the table to eat and wandering off "playing" on the edge of the table as if it was a piano while humming (even though I had no idea what I was doing). Today, I play keyboard at a band.

    • @jadewhite766
      @jadewhite766 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Similar situation, I would say though that it depends a lot on your field of interest. Cosmology and particle physics are mostly dotting i's and crossing t's, or looking at incredibly extreme edge cases, at this point, but things like nanophysics or fluid dynamics are still in their infancy/adolescence, and if you can engage with those you might well be the Newton or Feynman to that field.

Oh my god, it makes me so happy to hear you talk about the Culture series. It's probably my favourite book series of all time but always seems to be criminally overlooked by most people I've talked to, especially in the US where far less people seem to have ever even heard of it. My favourite is also Excession, tied with Use of Weapons. I'm surprised you didn't recommend starting with Consider Phlebas, given that it's the first published and the Idiran War makes up such an important part of the backdrop for the other books and it's an easy in to the series. In any case, thanks for bringing the books to the attention of your viewers.

Thank you for your passion. I am a Youth Services Librarian, and I just ran my first game of D&D yesterday with some of the teens at my library. Those five kids had a blast. We played for two hours right there in the library and as we finished they all said they couldn't wait to play again. That I felt confident enough to run this game is in large part due to you telling me again and again,"You can do it." Keep up the great work.

90215 is great. "Cinema" into "Leave It" is a great 1-2!
Thanks for the great literary suggestions. I just picked up your book Priest and am digging it.
The Tomb of Horrors is a truly awful adventure.
Also, thanks for your videos. I've been playing D&D since I was 14 (almost 30), and always feel reinvigorated or like I'm learning/thinking about something in a new way in my DMing when listening/watching you. My relatively new players also use your series as a guide and are already trying their hand at DM/GMing soon. I'd say you're definitely successful in making it approachable, but more importantly doing so while showing others that it can be a rich artistic experience.

A note on the editing comment you made when talking about the vlogbrothers from someone at film school hoping to become an editor: I like your current editing style. It feels much more natural and makes your jump cuts less noticable. Jump cuts can be jarring and sometimes they work but they're easy to make them look bad. Keep doing what you're doing.

Matt, you are so eloquent and such a wonderful speaker. I find your videos to be totally fascinating and tend to focus my attention on your words to a degree I do not with other YT videos. Really terrific oration.

Thanks for making these videos. Because of finding you on reddit I started watching Critical Role and now I just finished my third session as DM for a group of coworkers! Running them through "Against Cult of the Reptile God". Biggest challenge has definitely been curbing their murder hobo tendencies.

Iain Banks' "Use of Weapons", and Murakami's "Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World" are my 2 most recommended books to other people. Great authors with such vivid imaginations and such great storytelling styles that really bring their world's to life.

Great video Matt! Lots of fun stories to hear.
However, I would like to point out that Narnia does actually have quite a few strong female characters, assuming by strong you mean well-written and powerful in their personality. While the first book has a timid little girl and a by the book girl for its main female characters, later books like the Magician's Nephew( my favorite, so many great characters and interesting concepts) and the Silver Chair are a little stronger in their personalities. Perhaps the best example would be Aravis from The Horse and His Boy, who takes a lot of action to get out of a marriage that her father had arranged in a grab for power. Then again, she isn't exactly a character that would be appealing to a young girl since she is rather rude to the main character for most of the book.
Anyway, thanks for the great content and congrats on 50,000 subscribers.

I think this video made me realise that now is the right time for me to hit the bell for your videos. I value your opinion on most everything you talk about and I'm more tuning into your videos for you rather than just the topic. I hadn't heard it out into words before. Thank you for what you do, it gets me excited to build my worlds

Hey Matt, congrates on reaching 50,000. I discovered you in December and I have just made it throigh the 4 live play stream videos. I enjoyed them but I can appreciate why you stopped.
Btw one of the first cassettes (remeber those) I ever listened to to the point it started wearing out was the selftittled Genesis albumn with Home by the Sea.

    Hey Matt,
Thought I'd recommend one of my favorite authors. L.E. Modesitt Jr. is a fantasy/sci-fi writer who has a very deep interest in his books having realism and exploring shades of gray. Ethics and morality come up in his books very often, and all of his magical systems are rooted in what could be realistically feasible. I think you would enjoy his writing. I would recommend "Haze" or "The Ethos Effect" for a sci-fi book, and "Imager" or "The Magic of Recluce" for his fantasy books (my preferences are in the stated order for each genre).
Loved the video! Hope we can see more Q&A soon!

Another fantastic video, Matt. And speaking as a fellow aging professional writer/D&D player/prog nerd (who had a similar epiphany upon first hearing Wind and Wuthering), you should *definitely* get into Gentle Giant.

Just about to DM a group for the first time, Matt! I've been playing for 2 years but even though I really enjoy worldbuilding, acting and the idea of GMing, it's always seemed quite daunting to me and I've never gotten the chance. It still does a little, but your videos have helped quite a bit in helping me see what needs to be done in DMing and planning accordingly, as well as giving me the confidence to just go out and start something.
Admittedly I'm a little anxious, as not only am I starting this with no DMing experience, but only one of the players has played before too, but hopefully it'll all work out! My players have wanted to try characters more complex than just those out of the standard PHB, including a Goblin and a human in dog form. Generally my response so far has been to allow them to do it, so long as it's balanced with the other players and I know exactly what's going on.
Anyways, thanks so much for making this channel and helping new DMs like me try to start out. It would be enough if your videos were just entertaining, but they're quite useful as well.
