I just rewatched yesterday to give the movie another chance because I did stop watching it years ago due to that annoying child. Luckily, the director came out with another great film, The Nightingale in 2018, so I figure I'd try again. The movie makes a spectacular turn where the mother transforms into the Babadook and the child has to combat the demon inside her. Of course this demon is a metaphor for a nervous breakdown and each character has to battle their personal demons to reach sanity once more. Most movies would have ended dark with the mother being really possessed and eventually killed. Instead the director shows that you can survive these psychological wounds and make some kind of peace with it. Truly a classic!
