Not sure why it has taken me a day to put this into thought, but I find it cool that my two favorite shows of 2024, Shogun and The Penguin, some would argue are the best of the year in general both revolve around two characters that make sacrifices with people they know to obtain power within the realm of their profession. Yoshii Toranaga is a feudal lord in Japan trying to rise up and gain the title of Shogun, while Oz Cobb is a gangster trying to be the boss and big man of all the crime in Gotham. Both sacrificed so many things including people they cared about to obtain those ranks. So fucking cool!
Great video and analysis. Lauren does deserve tremendous credit for her show running, writing and directing. As to why Matt is getting so much praise, Matt created this Universe and if reports are to be believed, pretty much created all the plot and subplot points in the series. In Breaking Bad, Vince and the entire team of writers first produced all the plot points and story for an episode, then he released one writer to write that episode, then Vince reviewed an approved the final script. Here, Matt had already developed all the major plot points (to make The Penguin a cohesive sequel to the Batman movie and prequel to the next Batman Movie). Lauren and her team (still under the guidance of Matt) than did a magnificent job of writing and executing Matt's vision.
Of course I want to be clear, I am not taking anything away from Matt, he deserves a lot of credit for building this universe and producing it well but I also just want people to realize that he didn't show run this show too. He may give notes on plot and what not but Lauren LeFrance is this shows main person. And also thank you for the kind words, appreciate it!

Ok, so I read through your points and I am going to respond reasonably so there's no confusion because I think you're misguided on several things. My issue with the ending is that Victor, being a younger and presumably stronger man, could have easily overpowered a 40-year-old's feeble grip. His death felt implausible, almost like how a toddler might succumb. He had so many options-jumping, punching, using his body weight, or even grabbing the gun from his coat. Strangling scenes are usually more convincing when the assailant is shown to have an undeniable advantage. For instance, in The Godfather, they paid close attention to detail, pinning Luca Brasi's hand against the counter to prevent him from fighting back against the rope. That level of realism was sorely missing here.
I don't know if I agree with that lol... I think Oz had a good enough grip on him and you forget Oz is a lot more stronger than you think he is. In that moment human instinct kicks in and you go for the arms instead of something else. We've seen plenty of strangle scenes in entertainment do this.

@filmobsessednerd Oz has a moral compass unlike drop head detective. Mob heads sell each other out for the shekals. Oz should've ate Sofias booty like groceries and teamed up with her.
@@TacticalShineboxno, Oz SEEMS to have a moral compass, early in the show, with the things he says, but what he DOES shows he’s a monster. Murdering Vic BECAUSE he cares about him is the final proof.
@jonbodhi it was that currupt councilman who told Oz he had to be clean during the future investigations by the mayor. Telling him his street crime and those who had dirt on him would ruin his shot a political career. Oz realized the real game of organized crime was political, and he had to think on his feet and adapt or go to prison.
Lol..... Sophia was a villain well before she went to prison the first time...... She may have not been a monster at that time but just remember, she was going to take over a Mafia family...... And when she gets released, she killed that kid in cold blood at the end of the first episode, knowing Oz was lying.......
Well, technically she was good before her dad offered her the company. For all we know she could've turned it down after rethinking it over. She became the villain once she left Arkham in my eyes.
@filmobsessednerd Are you seriously saying that a "good person" would even consider becoming the head of a Mafia family..... No .... Of course not ..... She was brought up in crime and knew all about it so much that she was happy when her dad asked her to run things..... She may have been the lesser of evils but she was never a good person
@@phillyvoodoo I think our definition of "good" within the context of this scenario is a bit skewed. I recognize that she is a part of a crime family to some degree but before she got offered the role from her dad what had she done wrong? The first flashback scene of her is doing something good at that presentation event.
@filmobsessednerd Most Mafia families in the US does thanksgiving and Christmas giveaways but that doesn't negate where the money that funded the public good they are doing..... Think about this ..... If Carmine had offered her the head position, it shows that she was fully aware of where her wealth came from but was okay with living the lifestyle and giving good PR to the crime element..... A good person would never do that..... She may not have been a monster but she was never good
maybe because I'm 37, but I feel like this is a cheap version of Tony Soprano. It feels the same as when Tony Killed Chris and and your positive feelings for him went down hill
Except Tony had a valid reason to kill Chris. He was becoming a liability. Victor, on the other hand, was actually improving at a rapid rate. He was killed through no fault of his own( well, except for the family remark. Should have listened to Link)
I cannot speak to this comparison at all as I have not seen The Soprano's so I will leave that opinion as something only up to you and the rest of the fans who have seen that show
Sopranos is my favorite show of all time, but the Penguin is definitely it's own thing. Colin payed homage to Tony Soprano with this portrayal of the character, but they're completely different stories.

He should've took Penguin in I won't disagree with that but what do you mean by "the bomb guy" who's that? The Riddler? He was taken to Arkham.
The entire movie was his arc to NOT be just ‘vengeance,’ especially when he heard one of the terrorists parroting it. In the end he becomes more about saving lives than taking‘vengeance!’
Is the voice AI?
Sigh... no it is not. That's my real voice, I get this comment a lot. There's nothing I can do to change how I sound.
@@filmobsessednerdyour voice is like AI but with a personality. I like it a lot not trying to be creepy 😂
@@Crazy_e193 lol thanks, I know a lot of big TH-camrs out there have more AI sounding voices but don't get called out for it but it's all good I get it haha
No villain here...except the politicians and police in the show.
Oh just like real life, so meta.
Huh? What are you trying to say?
@filmobsessednerd Oz has a moral compass unlike drop head detective.
Mob heads sell each other out for the shekals. Oz should've ate Sofias booty like groceries and teamed up with her.
@@TacticalShinebox i’m pretty sure the character of Oz does not have any morals given the things he does in the show to the closest of people😅
@@TacticalShineboxno, Oz SEEMS to have a moral compass, early in the show, with the things he says, but what he DOES shows he’s a monster. Murdering Vic BECAUSE he cares about him is the final proof.
@jonbodhi it was that currupt councilman who told Oz he had to be clean during the future investigations by the mayor. Telling him his street crime and those who had dirt on him would ruin his shot a political career. Oz realized the real game of organized crime was political, and he had to think on his feet and adapt or go to prison.
i liked the last of us
Me too! Loved the first season.
Ignoring the modern audience 💯
What do you mean ignoring the modern audience?
She may not have been a monster but she was never good
@@phillyvoodoo interesting... I guess from my perspective this conversation is heavy on semantics for what we define as what in context
maybe because I'm 37, but I feel like this is a cheap version of Tony Soprano.
@@thaistompyeah, Oz is WAY worse than Tony Soprano, from a very early age. If Tony had grown up in a different family, he’d have been a far different person, but Oz was ALWAYS a sociopath.
Deidre-say it with me: DEE-druh. Deedruh. Deidre. Not Dee-ay-dree. It’s a beautiful name actually. You don’t see it very much anymore.
It's a beautiful name, and I was bad at pronouncing it😅
@ No worries😆Like I said, it’s a fairly uncommon name these days and the way it looks on paper is deceptive. 😊
@@laurelsilberman5705 it's a very old timey name that you'd think came out of the 1940's or 50's
