In the early 2000s the world had sent a strong message to the Minnesota Twins that they weren't wanted. A championship a decade ago was worth nothing in the face of cold hard cash. Minnesota knew darn well that it wanted its Twins, but the rest of the nation needed a wakeup call. They needed someone to lead the charge, to bring heart to the faithful.
And right on schedule, right on time, came the Hometown Hero, and for the next fifteen years, the Twins would be Mauer's team.

He was one of the nicest guys to ever play the game. Justin Morneau and Joe made a great duo. Justin with an MVP and a runner up and probably could have been on in 2010 if he didn't get hurt on a freak accident. Joe had a great year in 2009. The only problem I have is that he didn't catch in that many games. Apparently 2 of the 3 years he won a gold glove, the catchers in the league weren't that good. He only played a career high at catcher in 2008 with 139. He only played 4 other years over 100 games at catcher. He played a career high of 125 games at 1st base. And last but not least, he didn't win one game out of 10 playoff games! And he only had 1 rbi and 1 run in those 10 playoff games. That is why i couldn't believe he made it to the Hall of Fame. His 1st year of his huge contract, he got hurt. And only played a handful of games at catcher the next couple years. So how can you say he was a catcher when he couldn't lead them to one win in the playoffs!! Mark Grace was just as good if not better when he played for the Chicago Cubs and the Arizona
Diamondbacks, even to help Arizona to a World Series title! And he is not in!! Nice guys we need. But it is hard to justify Mauer getting in, especially on the 1st ballot!

@@charlieh3510 When I think HOF catchers I think Johnny Bench, Yogi Berra, Mike Piazza, Ivan Rodriguez, and those level of players. Mauer isn't one of these guys. But again, the bar is lowered as the years go by. Scott Rolen is an example of a guy who was good, but compared to the HOF standards of the previous generations he falls short.
In Mauer's case, he gets votes for "character" or whatever you want to call it, and that does count for the voters. It really shouldn't, but its also why McGuire, Sosa, and Bonds are not in....lack of character. We care about this now...long ago, no one did. The next year he had nine home runs, never hit more than 11 the rest of his career. He was good, but not great. I'm sure his injuries derailed things, but that's also a HOF criteria - did you play a lot? He played 15 years but missed a lot of games during that stretch.

@@charlieh3510 You can get injured in any position. Biggio moved from catcher to infield and was very protective for many years at the end of his career. Mauer signed a huge contract and was mediocre the rest of his career hurting the Twins. Gary Carter had a much better career and won a WS and it took him 6 years to get in the HOF.

@@jonathonhappel the contract didn’t hurt the Twins. The owner LET the contract hurt the Twins. Holding that against Joe is juvenile

2nd best offensive catcher of all time to Mike Piazza + 3 gold gloves. Top 5 overall catcher to ever play the game.
He's a shoo-in HOFer for those who know ball.
People always judge catcher careers like they're just as long as other positions, which is foolish. A 10 year span hitting .323/.405/.469 is up there with the very best catcher careers of all time.
