I honestly think he was one of _the_ best writers and directors of the games industry. Certainly in RPGs. And his works - especially Suikoden II - were a massive inspiration to me. A great and tragic loss indeed.
When he says this is a spiritual successor to Suikoden it's because it is. This is basically the guy just left Konami and continued on making the next game in the series. There's a couple of things that I like that aren't mentioned. One is the "Allow to flee" option. If you're in a random encounter fight that you are over-leveled for, the "Run" option is swapped to "Allow to flee". Unlike "Run", which has a chance to fail, "Allow to flee" allows you to escape the battle 100% of the time. It's a handy option to have (which Suikoden also had, though it was "Let Go" instead of "Run"), as even if you don't use it just seeing "Allow to flee" is a good indicator that you're over-leveled. It can also appear if most of the party members are over-leveled, but one or two are under-leveled, making the already shortened level catch-up grind even safer as you get to pick-and-choose what battles you take on. The other is that there's a seer character that can give you hints as to where recruitable characters are, for a (small) fee. This is something that Suikoden needed and is a welcome addition. The hints are vague enough so that they don't usually tell you exactly where to go, but if you're familiar with the game you'll know from the hints. That being said, damn that fishing. One of the recruitable characters requires a specific fish and I can't for the life of me find that single. Goddamn. Fish. ANYWHERE!. The worst part is that recruiting that specific character is necessary for one branch of the castle upgrade tree. I don't regret backing this game. It's fun as hell, and a welcome Suikoden successor. Can't wait for my backer Digital OST to get released. Oh, and in terms of ProJareds' unique item? Perhaps it could be a Trade Post good or Appraisable antique.
The fish you're looking for is in a hidden fishing spot next to the ocean cavern in that area. Follow the coast to the side of that cavern and you'll find the spot. Good luck!
So, have you found any missable characters or items yet? Which, I know, would be hard to know *beforehand* since you've already got the character and all...but still. That was always a big oof for me in Suikoden.
@@jaimerivera2382 Looking at recruiting guides there's only one that's permanently missable, and they require you to get all of the other recruitable characters before a certain point near the end of the game. The advice I found is to go all-in on recruiting people after the incident with the destroyed boats (You'll know it when you get to it). After that point, you might not have access to the people you need to recruit others. The seer I mentioned will have a full list of 'hints' for optional people you can recruit at that point, so if she doesn't have any hints for you, you're good to go.
Wait, you paid the company money, they bailed on your reward, and now they're paying YOU to say nice things about the game? well that's a funny turn of events

Maybe they forgot or i am guessing projared gotten canceled before and they don't want to take any chance for it, Thankfully he always kept his "recept" and i hope they do reach out to projared, give em an item!
From him talking on streams, it seems to genuinely come from how busy Now In The 90s had them. Now he just has time to make videos other than those again.
@@aaronpitts6749 I made a character sort of like that a very long time ago in RPG Maker. The idea was that the character would have ridiculously high attack and defense, being able to dish out massive damage while taking very little damage in return, but had so few hit points that for how quickly he could take out enemies, he himself could just as quickly fall if you weren't careful. Because while your other characters might have a few hundred hit points, he might only have like 10.
Jared, you probably had a big influence on me when it comes to JRPGs, and how your reviews of SMT4 and Bravely Default back in the day led me to play some of my favorite titles that have marked me since. So, yeah. It might have just been coincidences, but thanks anyway.
It's cool to see Projared's frequent upload schedule as of late. Also, I consider myself a bit of a hard sell, but things like the idea of attendant slots and other bits of customization might just do it for me.
Thank you for the super thanks! With Nit90s wrapped up, I have much more free time to focus on this channel. I wasn't able to balance it before like I hoped.
I love this game, I kickstarted it and I don't regret it at all. My only complaint is with some of the choices made by the localizers. Really shoehorning in things for "Modern audiences" that really can take you right out of the moment. That aside, the game is fantastic and I am absolutely also pumped for the sequel, I just hope they use different localizers next time.
As someone who also backed it from the start im happy to see they kept their promise. Yoshitaka Murayama would be proud to hear all the praise this game so rightly deserves. Thank you Jared for spreading the word about this amazing game.
I'm roughly, I believe, 3/4 finished with the game. And I don't want it to end lol! Just unlocked the theater and it's insane how ALL 120 characters have voiced lines for the plays and add their own personality flare (tip: putting Larla in any role is hilarious lol) I hope, despite the unfortunate passing of Murayama (rip my goat), they still make the Eiyuden Chronicle sequel. Or Konami makes a Suikoden 6(LOOOOOL). I wish there were more JRPGs like this.
Just done playing this game and this is my favorite game I ever played on Game Pass as of now. Planning to buy this game on Steam when it goes on sale.
Eiyuden Chronicles has come a long way since its Kickstarter pitch. Just from playing the backer demo I have been satisfied with what Rabbit and Bear studios has created and cannot wait to sink my teeth into it fully. Truly it is a game for heroes.
I have it downloaded and just need to take the time to play it. I never had the chance to play a Suikoden game, so I'm psyched! R.I.P. Yoshitaka Murayama.
Alright, I'm sold. I will be checking out how intrusive the story is before purchasing, but so far so good. I've had a lot of bad luck with RPGs in recent years where the game takes the controller away from the player due to the sheer amount of pointless cutscenes and dialog, which makes me want to scream at the game to let me play. Pokémon has gotten REALLY bad about it, but I feel like this is a major trend in RPGs that THINK their story and cutscenes are really good, but the reality is the writing is generic at best, and the cutscenes nothing to write home about. All I want is good gameplay and for the game to focus on being a game, not a visual novel made by subpar writers and animators.
@@AlphaSquadZero Unfortunately the game doesn't run very well on the Switch at the moment, so I'm holding off until a patch. Plus the more I think about it and how many times I've been burned by RPGs in recent memory, I think I'll wait for a sale and also learn more about the story since I'm tired of endless dialog and "fight the gods" type stories.
Looks amazing. I wish they'd make a new Final Fantasy that was turn-based and similarly had a series of systems focused on quality of life optimizations. It's like Square Enix believes turn-based mechanics are outdated/for retro 2D titles only and are constantly trying to reinvent the action RPG to mixed results.
Holy cow, Jared, thank you for this one. I wasn't going to get this until I watched this review and you hit the nail on the head in just about everything. I have not played a traditional JRPG like this in years or even longer. I grew up with PS1 JRPGs and this was clearly inspired by them. In a weird sort of way I think they took big risks making it this traditional but it paid off big time. This will be in contention for GOTY for me. Thanks again!
I will never understand why depth of field is a thing in games. It just makes 90% of the monitor look like shit. Let's not forget that the human eye is always in full focus on the one thing you are looking at. Depth of field doesn't do the one thing people say it does. You would need an eye tracker.
I just finished eiyuden chronicles rising the other day. A bit disappointed that it's not the same gameplay as hundred heroes, but I'm still hype for this
MY MAN! I've been waiting since you first talked about backing the game back when it was open to backup! Awesome, detailed and concise review, well done Jared, love!
Got my physical copy 10 days ago and I’ve been playing it for about 37 hours now. Other than one glitch keeping me from recruiting a character (something I hope will get patched soon), I have no complaints at all.
I already backed this on Kickstarter after your video recommending it, so I'm looking forward to playing it when I get off work. This video gave me a lot of stuff to look forward to.
I am getting this game for my Birthday this week (gotta wait till payday though), but I would like to asked everyone's opinion on which version to get. I would like the Switch version because of the ability to play anywhere, of course, but I have been hearing some bad things with the gameplay. Does this change the game in any significant way that I should just get this on the PS5? Are graphics changed so much that it's not recognizable to the consoles or is it just dumbed down? I would appreciate the advice. Thank you!
No slight to 505 games, I've enjoyed a lot of what they've made, but I'm gonna need you to trust me when I say that they're still not done with Bloodstained yet and I'm confident I can wait 5 years and come see this game when it's closer to complete.
Played it and love it. As a suikoden fan I backed the hell out of this kickstarter.j over 120 characters rubes custom castle setup, this game screams suikoden essence ive have been waiting so long for this and i fell in love with it immediatley
In case the game's creators are reading these comments, I'm going to mention that I hadn't heard of this game before this video, but it looks good enough that I'm probably going to buy it now. An endorsement from someone who typically has good taste is more useful than just reading, "Hey, this game is a lot like Suikoden."
I love that the Pets of the Backers are in the Game..and not even Cats and Digs! I saw so far a Racoon, Bird , Panda, Bunny, Pandabear and many more..even a Chinchilla! Never seen in a JRPG before😂
I am hyped for this game and will play it. However, it should be noticed that it suffers from pretty bad localization in some areas (especially characters and how they treat the main character Nowa), you probably know the kind I mean. If you can, play the Japanese version instead of the English.
How? Are the characters like racist or something and only in the localization? Provide examples please? All the playable characters I've seen are white and they're split 50/50 between guys and girls.
I hope the "recruiting characters" thing doesn't rely on the classic "While you are in this specififc point of the main story, go back to a point of the town that you already explored before for a sidequest and since you've done it, now you can talk to McDuffy to recruit him". Or half of the hidden stuff in Trails games, pretty much.
I've heard a little about this game, but not too much. I did see some folks complaining about the localization though. Something about characters who are supporting in the original are now oddly insulting in the English version? I thought I heard a few memes got thrown in, too. Almost sounds like it's trying to be Working Designs 2.0 or something.
"You're imagining things!" "It was always that way!" "okay it is changed but it's only a little bit!" "okay it is changed alot but let me convince you that's actually a good thing!" -Disingenuous 'journos'
About point 8 : I wouldn't say the music is *bad* but comparing it to Suiko 1 and 2 was kinda unavoidable and it really doesn't soar as high I'm afraid. I played 15 hours and for now there are really no memorable tracks. Way less inspired, with no real melody that makes you go "haaa..." and not a soundtrack I'd listen to out of the game, contrary to Suiko 1 & 2's. I went to half a dozen towns and they all had the same rather bland bgm, whereas in S1 or 2 almost every city has its own banger. I hope to be proved wrong later on and it was just the beginning that was relatively weak. I have a few gripes but the game itself is great though, I can't stop playing. I've been wanting such a game for soooo long! FINALLY a JRPG that gets it. I also really love that the hero isn't mute for once, it was a big issue I had with most Suikodens. This video is an ad but the game definitely deserves it, it would be a mistake for good JRPG lovers to not grab it.
Similarly thanks to your video mentioning it years ago, I backed it as well on Kickstarter because I loved Suikoden 1 and 2, and the idea of a game similar to those with more modern ideals sounded appealing. Been very excited for the release after following the development for years, it looked and sounded so cool, and now seeing it in motion really further confirms that. Really exciting to be able to play it soon
This game totally slipped by me but I am so on board. I played Suikoden II for the first time a few years ago and wow was I ashamed I never did when the PS1 was new. Absolutely picking this game up to show my support for more turn-based RPGs lol. Thanks for these highlights Jared!
I am going to play Eiyuden Chronicles since Suikoden 2 is one of my goats. My only doubt is: can I just day 1 it or might it be better to wait for a few updates? I heard weird stuff about bugs and localization issues on the reviews. I'm not big on replaying story driven games so I want my one playthrough to be unsullied by bugged quests and gender politics injected by rogue translation teams.
Definitely bugs, at least on the Switch port. The localization thing, so far, seems to just be hate on the game because SBI may have been involved with it.
@@marcocamacho8467 I've read some quotes and seen some screenshots, it's definitely more than that. If it's just one sentence here and there then it's fine but if it's going to make me feel like I'm on Twitter it's going to ruin my experience.
Was this the game where the Localizers shit the bed? I'm from Sweden and I don't want American culture war in my Eastern fantasy. Sorry Americans, I don't care about the war, but I do care about the authentic experience the creators intended for the game.
@@slamshift6927 Fucking Correct. But I'd love it if I could escape my explosive reality in the realms of videogames. Also, we've upgraded to guns and bigger bombs now, we had this bomb that didn't detonate less than 100 meters from my house. Not even joking, one hundred percent serious - I even have streets I don't walk anymore. Not to mention that I've started seeing random police searches in the streets. Shit's great. /s
To put it bluntly - some people like elements of JRPGs that are sorely lacking in western media right now, like well written and tolerable characters & setting. So when that is taken out, this might aswell be just another generic western title wearing the skin-suit of a JRPG.
@@Coconut-219 I absolutely agree and I want to preface this with the fact that my problem isn't American Left vs American Right or anything like that, I'm completely unbiased in American sociology and I don't have time to worry about those problems, because I have my own problems. Which is why it gets very frustrating when anime, games and mangas are hi-jacked for the purpose of propaganda spreading in any direction, American politics aren't relatable to my day to day life and I wouldn't want my videogames to be localized into MY day to day problems either, because why the fuck would I want that. Now twist that up to eleven when I have to sit and get told about American problems. I swear to God you guys would roll your fucking eyes back in your skull if I localized anime to be about Swedish problems, ergo, you wouldn't give a fuck because you're not Swedish (most likely). Because why the fuck would you care about my problems? I wouldn't! And finally, WHY THE FUCK would you care about my problems in a fantasy game from another country that isn't ours or yours, I just don't fucking understand. I could get shot tomorrow, could I just fucking play a game with elves and dwarves and magic in a JRPG and not have to worry about "How America is feeling today." I care about fellow humans all across the planet, but not when I'm playing video games. Drives me up the wall, it does.
This video speaks true it make me love RPGs again, I can't stop playing the game is so good and beautiful. I wonder what type of item Jared was going to make, still I hope he got the chance to make it.
Sorry Jared, I loved the suikoden games and this one seemed like a passion project, but the current western localization team that worked on it kind of killed it for me. Especially since this was suikoden’s creator’s last game he worked on before passing away. Just seems very tasteless. Anyways, either you play it on pc and patch it out with mods, or buy the Japanese one only. Those are the only way to play it imo.
I've been interested in this game but there is too much good stuff coming out this year I don't know what to do with myself lol. I absolutely love how beautiful the environmental design in this game looks.
Can you please explain what was put in that was so "egregious" with references to the Japanese original script to compare? No one is explaining anything they're just like "SBI this" and "woke that."
@@KrimsonKattYT Eh, I'm not big on the "SBI" or "woke" claims specifically (as in those are primarily claims against people and their intent, where my issues are against said people's work, regardless of intent), but there's a bunch of "added characterization" that wasn't there in the original, that is done in part to "round off the corners", that is to take offense to the original form and thus rewrite it according to their sensibilities, and also done in part to "give it more character", that is, adding "characterization" that did not exist in the original because they found it to bland and wanted to 'spice it up". Basically, if you're familiar with the complaints regarding semi-recent Fire Emblem localizations and how it butchered the characterization and overall tone, then you already get the general gist of it. Similarly, criticism for Working Designs-style localization in general, especially as it became known just how little respect for the originals they held. One such easy-to-reference example is when a character uses [力任せ] in the original Japanese, which translates as the concept of brute force, or more literally, "using all one's strength"; That gets localized as, "*sigh* Another muscle-brained chud." when a more accurate translation would have been just saying, "Muscle-brain." Could even include the "*sigh*" without changing the tone. Another would be when an enemy says, "Here's our secret weapon! It'll squash you flatter than a/your granny's backside!" (not a direct quote, but close enough) when in the original it was just, "Here's our secret weapon! Prepare yourselves!". There's the case with the golem where in Japanese it's just, "We did it!" "But what is this huge thing?" while in the localization goes as, "Got him!" "Are you sure it's a he?" which is probably what some are using as fuel re: "woke" and "DEI" complaints, while I just see it as the "added 'characterization' " localization problem. You can find quite a few other examples by looking up Twitter user Zakogdo, who has been cataloguing a lot of these sort of issues of localization for awhile.
Unfortunately DEI infested. This was on my must own list for this year and has been for several years; and at the last moment I discover I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Depressing.
Going through the tutorial section of the game and I'am liking it so far and waiting for it to open up more. If there are indeed 100 or more characters than it will do Suikoden proud.
The only problem is that it feels like this game was a bit vandalized in the localization process. So unless you can tank some "muscle bound chud" "wubadubdubs" and other similar shenanigans of weird localization, you'll need to wait for a fan translation mod or something like it.
That's not even bad localization. The JP script could have said things very similar. Like for "muscle bound chud" it could have said "muscle bound (insert Japanese slang that means stupid here)". In that case it would be an accurate localization. They're not going to insert Japanese slang words into an English script. For the "wubadubdub" line they may have been translating some character saying a similar nonsense word in Japanese and localized it with a similar English nonsense word. This isn't "woke", this is just a normal localization process.
I've had zero interest in Suikoden (only played enough of the first game to get Psycho Mantis to say "So, you like Suikoden?"), and if the localization is as bad as everyone else says, then it's definitely a hard pass.
I've been playing the game for 15 hours and there is no localization issue, idiots with loud voices say crap and many people are eating it, as usual...
No. He is right. So far no one has given actual proof of this bad localization. I have only seen a line of someone stating not to assume a golem's gender and that has been about it. I think people are automatically hating this because SBI may have been involved.
My japanese is intermediate at best but this game's dialogue is surprisingly easy to read. I suggest people unsatisfied about the botched localization give it a shot. It might take longer to finish the game but it beats being forced to read a character calling someone a chud.
@@summereletrohits2014 Does that one line alone really ruin the entire game for everyone? I apologize but that does seem a bit petty to miss out on a potentially good game just because of one line.
A lot of these reasons boil down to "Remember Suikoden? This game has it too." and ultimately there's 1 very good reason why not to invest: bad localization. JRPG fans know that this is a plague that's happened for decades and can singlehandedly ruin the whole game. EDIT: Just learned about Sweet Baby's involvement so game went from a "I'll play it after a dialogue patch comes out" to a solid "nope".
Growing up me and a good friend would play LOTS of suikoden and we would always reference it and inspired a lot of our DnD campaigns, so I'm very glad to see that it's spiritual scucessor has owned that claim and deserved that title. My friend has since passed 2 years ago, but I'll be playing this and be thinking of him.
Ngl, I remember when you posted your video about this kickstarter and I was excited but not sure if this would be up my alley since I love RPG’s but turn-based ones are very hit and miss for me. I don’t like the standard turn based formula and prefer when the combat has a bit more action to it, such as the Mario & Luigi RPG games! From him talking on streams, it seems to genuinely come from how busy Now In The 90s had them. Now he just has time to make videos other than those again.
Hmm. What item would Jared make? Blue Shirt Armor? A bow that fires ten arrows at once? Or perhaps an incredibly deadly throwable spoon?
How about a character with one HP named Jerd
@@projaredI had really hoped NIT90s being done was just an April Fools joke… sad that you guys didn’t get to cover FF3(6) release.

Maybe someone else can do a NIT90s-like series of videos.

Even more excited to play this after the video. Really happy to hear that Yoshitaka Murayama left us with one hell of a game.

If you know, you know.
Some stress relief, perhaps?
Just unlocked the theater and it's insane how ALL 120 characters have voiced lines for the plays and add their own personality flare (tip: putting Larla in any role is hilarious lol)
I hope, despite the unfortunate passing of Murayama (rip my goat), they still make the Eiyuden Chronicle sequel. Or Konami makes a Suikoden 6(LOOOOOL). I wish there were more JRPGs like this.
On gamepass for Xbox and Pc, easy way to give it a try too if you're on the fence.
Just done playing this game and this is my favorite game I ever played on Game Pass as of now. Planning to buy this game on Steam when it goes on sale.
It's great to see people covering this game. I LOVED Suikoden 1 and 2, and can't wait to play their spiritual successor!
Joke on you Jared, I backed the Kickstarter too so you don't even need to convince me!
It’s a fun series, if you like old school JRPGs you won’t be disappointed
When the Suikoden 1 & 2 remaster comes out you'll get your chance!
This looks awesome! I would never have considered it without this recommendation
Looks amazing, especially for an old fart like me, who adored Suikoden 1 and 2. Looking forward to seeing you stream this Jerd!
Thanks Jared, this video hyped me up so much, I grabbed it right off the shelf when I seen it!! 😁
Let me know how it goes, from Jared's description the game does seem scared to let you fight mobs and have them try to grind you down.
I feel this comment so hard
This is the entire reason I haven't gotten either of the sections of the remake of VII
GOTY. Lol!
I will never understand why depth of field is a thing in games.
It just makes 90% of the monitor look like shit.
Let's not forget that the human eye is always in full focus on the one thing you are looking at.
Depth of field doesn't do the one thing people say it does. You would need an eye tracker.
Thanks to your Love Letter to Eiyuden ❤🎉 i love the Gsme too. Its feels so much like a Suikoden 6 we all Deserve!
I GET A CASTLE!!!!??? SOLD
Does it come with a not-Dracula and not-Belmont, tho...
This game looks amazing! Looking forward to picking it up since the Suikoden 1&2 remasters are are still sitting without a release date on steam.
They sponsored this video? Then I hope they refunded you for whatever you backed if you didn’t get to design your item!

I'm gonna get my hands on this soon
I purchased this game based on this video. I loved it. Thank you Jared.
Single player rpg with a season pass? That's a pass alright.
The OST , Story and the Variety of Characters. This is what made Suikoden really great
you can tell Jared didn't get to write the whole script....
I kickstartered this baby and can't wait for my stuff to come!
I'll just wait for the patch fixes, thanks.
Got my physical copy 10 days ago and I’ve been playing it for about 37 hours now. Other than one glitch keeping me from recruiting a character (something I hope will get patched soon), I have no complaints at all.
The graphics are gorgeous and the classic JRPG relents look incredible! 🤩 Great review!
*elements, lol. Typing too fast!
Thank you!
I was excited for this. I enjoyed Rising, and wanted to see the full game! I never played Suikoden, but this intrigued me.
He got paid for this
I love that the Pets of the Backers are in the Game..and not even Cats and Digs! I saw so far a Racoon, Bird , Panda, Bunny, Pandabear and many more..even a Chinchilla! Never seen in a JRPG before😂
Why does that chick look like Sailor Moon? Lol. I'm sold on this game though. Huge fan of Suikoden and the ps1 era rpgs.
She's literally a "magical girl" wizard. Complete with "magic cutie shot"
Backed this game immediately once I found out about it - Order of the Archivists baby, let's go!!! This game is phenomenal ☺️
It is like that.
couple of them are behind annoying mini games also. shits whack
This is like all the best parts of all the best JRPG's put into one game... I'm sold.. I'm getting it..
You should read the user reviews first instead of buying it because of a sponsored video.
Thank you for reminding me that this exists, I had legitimately forgotten. It caught my eye in that one direct!
I'm absolutely loving it so far. soooo much charm.

Woo finally! I've been waiting since you told us about this game! ❤
Ugh I heard it’s really iffy on Switch ☹️ guess I’ll wait for patches
The second I saw the adorable raccoon named Melon with the yellow bow around his neck in the first town, I was sold.
This game is heavily sponsored by content creators…almost ad nauseam as raid shadow legends
That, plus 505, means it's super untrustworthy
Low hanging fruit joke incoming in 3... 2... 1:
"If only they spent the sponsorship budget on a better localization studio"

Was this the game where the Localizers shit the bed? I'm from Sweden and I don't want American culture war in my Eastern fantasy. Sorry Americans, I don't care about the war, but I do care about the authentic experience the creators intended for the game.
You got bigger concerns, like the alarming number of grenade attacks that make even Americans say "Hold up, grenades?!"

I will once they either fire the localizers and re-translate it, or a fan translation patch comes out to fix the egregious BS that was put in.
Thank you for this video I would of never found out about this game without it and it looks just like my kind of game

Rest In Peace Yoshitaka Murayama

@@armorvil Or maybe you're the one eating crap
Also there's a world map, and it's big!
Can't believe that wasn't one of the reasons. World maps are a rarity in RPGs these days.

My friend has since passed 2 years ago, but I'll be playing this and be thinking of him.
One of the few good reviews of this I've seen, a bit skeptical about the legitimacy of the review
Maybe because this isn't a review.
I mean it's got nearly a 80 on Metacritic if you care about such things, seems like it's getting good reviews.
it's getting consistent 7-9s. "one of few good reviews" is objectively not true

Now I just hope the switch version is actually good since I hear it has problems but I also hear a big patch is coming for it soon enough 😅
