I got my copy a week ago and have been playing it on PS4. What did you play on, and how did you feel about it's loading times. I'm hoping that the Day 1 patch will shorten these times. I played Rising on my PS4 as well, otherwise I'd be more keen with switching consoles.
good game muddled by terrible localizers pretending to be writers butchering others work goes beyond english version too as that EN version is used as a basis for other versions so its especially danming on the product
After finishing Suikoden 1 and 2 just before this game's Kickstarter begin I've been anticipating it for a long time and I'll definitely buy it Thank you Yoshitaka Murayama for bringing this game to us
I played Suikoden II when it was new in my friend's basement when we were 12 years old. Ever since then, I've been a massive fan of Murayama's work and was KICKING MYSELF that I missed the kickstarter. Pre-ordered it on GOG as soon as I could, and been playing Eiyuden Rising to get myself hype for Hundred Heroes. It looks SO good, and the art in particular is GORGEOUS, maybe the best 2.5D style I've seen yet and the 2.5D style is probably the most beautiful style modern gaming is doing these days.
As a Suikoden series fan, this really hits hard nostalgia. I've been saving for a long time and fortunately, can afford the game. I only hope, that this wont be the only Eiyuden. I hope, it can have many more and give us throwbacks like possibly having Nowa or Seign in the party for Eiyuden 2 or something. This game really brought a smile to my face, it's like a time machine, goin' back to the good old days, and like a hug, from days past.
They've already confirmed that they are making a sequel. The kickstarter did pretty well and apparently they've made a good amount of money after it closed.
This does look like a beautiful game even with the camera blur effect. Having environmental options in games like this feel crucial and with not being bogged down my random encounters I feel that really does help promote exploration which may be better in the long run
Such a huge YES! Your video makes a lot of great points (and very important ones) why games we experienced can be timeless. When the original Suikoden games came out they took their time to build up, and with Eiyuden they continue all the party building and experimentation. So glad this game is getting its chance to shine. And thank you for mentioning Suikodens creator and his influence on this game.
I didn't even know this existed until a streamer mentioned it last night, so seeing this review today is most welcome. And I'm glad to hear the finished product is good! Definitely will be getting this
I plan to get and play this at some point. Sadly I never played the Suikoden series much (except for a bit of Suikoden I), so I have no nostalgia to hype me up for this. My mind is set on another game releasing this week, but i look forward to playing this eventually. It's sad the creator passed before seeing it released.
My wife and her friend have finally got our copies from kickstarter campaign last week and they are making their way through it as I type this comment. Definitely going to be in her top 3 favorites of all time category.
just finished replaying Eiyuden Chronicle Rising just before this game comes out and i am SO HYPED! I pre-ordered this last month and i cannot wait to play it! I loved playing the Suikoden games especially 3. It's so sad the creator passed away before he got a chance to see the release of the game but i hope he was happy with the end result.
I was already gonna buy this. This Review just made me more excited. Also your coverage of this game put it on my radar AND got me hype for it. Thank you for covering the old school jrpg niche on youtube. Your videos are great!
I like how it doesn't have a silent protagonist, so it's a bit like Suikoden 3 in that regard. Having a silent protagonist is fine, but a fully fleshed out main character like those in the Tales series tend to draw me in to the story a lot better.
Agree with your takes! Suikoden II continues to be my favorite game of all time. Eiyuden Chronicle did not unseat it but I loved it. It hits all my nostalgia in the same way. I enjoyed seeing them bring back chracter types, mechanics or tropes from Suikoden but do it a bit different. Its like a new dish from your favorite chef!
I love the game too, if I were to give it a score, id say 8/10 for me. I love how they utilized every single characters. Characters who ran theater, and art workshop to design your HQ. Then you have guild deputies good at collecting resources in a mission. I love the guild missions, it really helps with resource collection and you see the characters do it too when you visit the location where they are doing the mission. It helps with the immersion, and feel that the characters are actually doing something out there for the cause. I like that they also added a support slot for non-combatants, so we can bring characters like the shopkeepers and chef for buffs. So they can be included too during MSQ, and they say something as well. They utilized most of the characters and make them relevant. The combatants are nicely done as well because most characters have unique skills and runes and plays different. I just wish they did more. Like for example, they should utilized the enemy weaknesses more and made it easy for us the ditinguish which enemy is weak to what. Like for instant characters who do piercing attacks could have been a better party member in a dungeon with many enemies weak to piercing damages. Elemental weaknesses of enemies are also hard to distinguish as there is no assess. These could have been done better.
Thank you for the review! I'm still waiting for copy so I I'm pretty excited as to what you've shown so far. I love Suikoden and I definitely love old-school type games. As to whether I love Octopath vs Eiyuden, I will definitely love Eiyuden more because of how large the world is and how the story is akin to what I still feel about Suikoden which is cut above the rest in terms of narrative. Got teary eyed truthfully how beautiful this game looked T_T
Im playing on PC the loading time is not as instant as i expected Overall the gameplay is pretty much ps2 era jrpg not much quality of life here but those who played suikoden 1 and 2 will probably dont mind it The only issue for me is just the loading im pretty fine with they go classic jrpg feel i played rpg since the NES days But at least i hope they improved the loading on PC
I’m seeing a lot of people angry about the translation. I’ve started it on game pass and am at the 6 months later part. There’s one comrade who is definitely annoying to me already and I can’t wait to bench her
Im getting this day just because of my love for the Suikoden series...this is great to hear that the game is great and honoring the past JRPGs and Murayama's work
For me, the favorite track hands down has to be "Flags of Brave." When it started playing part way into the Bridge Duel, it took that scene to a whole other level. It's like the "Reminiscence" of Eiyuuden Chronicles; it doesn't get played a lot, but hits hard when it does.
This game is the perfect example of HD 2D rpg for next gen instead of jumping to 3D wagon The style is perfect, i can imagine game like wild arms, valkyrie profile, star ocean in this style rather than moving to 3D
I was late to the Suikoden party being I hadn’t played the series til the 2010’s.. And it’s the reason why I found a lot of my current favs due to recommendation.. So it’s gonna be heartwarming when I get my cart as well as that Remaster when it drops
Whoa... never knew what this series was before. Heard of it, but never got into it. Thanks to your video and helpful info, im definitely going to play this
One thing that really prevented me from enjoying the game completly at the start was comparing it too much with Suikoden titles. But after a while I got immersed and really started enjoying it. I ended up having 60h within a week of play (really concerning when you think about it seriously). There are definetly some QoL improvements they could add but overall it is an amazing game that really deserves a spot on the hall of fame of JRPGs. Thank you very much Murayama-san!
I wish I could rename the main characters but yeah, you're really selling this for me and I might giving it a good look. As for whether or not it'll live up to Suikoden 2? ...Oof. That's a tall order my friend. That said, it does look promising.
Suikoden series best known for their World, Lore & History. Each series connected to each other. i hope Eiyuden Chronicles have the same World Building, which is interest me in diving into their lore.
Definitely gonna be playing this. I'm also hoping and praying that Suikoden 1/2 remaster actually releases. They have been radio silent on them since last August when they delayed them. I'm a bit concerned.
I’ve been very excited for this, and even more so after this review. It’s so pretty. The big character sprites are just like suikoden which had very tall thin sprites. I hope the switch version is good because my computers hard drive just corrupted a few days ago and restarts every 2secs 😢
My most anticipated game of all time as Suikoden is my favorite series of all time. I think I'm about a quarter of the way through, at the dungeon after the treefolk village and so far I am really enjoying the experience. Will it knock off Suikoden 2 as my favorite ever? Probably not. The characters aren't QUITE connecting on the same level that S2s did, but it's still all very, very good. I think EC is akin to Suikoden 1, actually. A great, great base for them to build upon on the already-announced sequel.
I backed the game on Kickstarter and got my copy Thursday. I’ve been playing for over 20 hours now and really enjoying it. I need to stop with the story for now and do some more recruiting.
The low encounter rate is a bug on PC. When you set the refresh rate to 60hz it doesn’t actually cap to that and will match your monitors settings. For example if your monitor is 144hz it will jump to that even though you have it set to 60 and that makes the encounter rate way lower than it is supposed to be.
I'm pretty sure the option to turn off the depth of field blur is only available for the pc version. Hopefully consoles will get it added. What I would really love is a slider for it, because I don't want to turn it off entirely. I just want to adjust the severity of it.
Can't wait to play this game! Trying to finish a few other games like Final Fantasy Rebirth, octopath travelers 2 and unicorn overlord which all will take me some time to beat.
It's funny you mention how low the random encounter rate is, yet many YouTuvers bring up random encounters as an annoyance to be aware of. Sounds like you're an experienced JRPG fan & know what to expect, so just the existence of random encounters isn't an issue. Glad I watched your review to put things in perspective. Sounds like a great time! Edit: Whoa, you think it's better than Octopath Traveler 2?! 😮 That's high praise! OT2 is basically the pinnacle of modern takes on retro JRPGs for me
There is a bug where the encounter rate takes longer the higher your monitor refresh rate is above 60hz. The in-game fps seem to be bypassed by v-sync so you have to limit the fps through your gpu's settings or you can manually set your monitor's refresh rate to 60hz.
To me this is what HD 2D should strive to look like. The more SNES style like Octopath Traveler, especially straight up enhanced SNES games like FF PR games, is actually painful to my eyes due to appearing blurry on HD systems.
I wonder why physical switch is so far out? Did they not want the game to be leaked before launch, or was there a logistical problem that made it delayed
What did you play this on? It seems like the switch port is in a really rough state. I wanted to own a physical copy, but it seems like steam may be my best bet.
I pre-ordered it though I won't be able to pick up my copy until a week after release. I don't know if this is true but I think I read or heard that the plot for Suikoden II was actually what they wanted to do first but they made Suikoden I either to get some practice before making their planned game, because Konami wanted something faster then they felt they could make II right, or both. If That's true it makes sense the spiritual successor would lean more towards II. As for the army battle system the movement looks closer to II's though much smaller battlefields but the actual combat looks between units much closer to that in III. I view this as a good thing because in II there was a high chance of attacks not damaging at all, making many army battles last much longer then they needed to IMO if the player's luck was bad, while in III they usually inflicted at least some damage. One odd thing I noticed while browsing through the recruitable characters list on the wiki is there are several male characters wearing glasses (five minimum) but I haven't noticed any female characters wearing glasses in the artwork or screen shots. I wonder why?
Encounter rate is tied to frame rate btw if you lower your frame rate outside of the game you’ll get more encounters (30fps every ~20 seconds, 60 fps ~40 seconds)
Yeah there’s no way to. I didn’t notice a discrepancy until I loaded it up on my steam deck and started noticing way more encounters. I didn’t get any on my pc (I was getting framerates of over 200)
I’m not that shocked. I went over to the Eiyuden discord and people have been finding some wild ass glitches, bugs, and the game had a massive bug that wiped your progress up until two days ago. …course I can’t speak from personal experience since they botched my backer order and decided to use a t-shirt company to distribute the backer rewards…I’m a little pissed
Those reviews are weird. They take a multiplatform game and heavily lean towards only one platform for reviewing. They don't separate the overall game from the performance of one platform. I'm not one of those "reviews are bought and paid shilllssssssss" or whatever. But I really dislike unprofessional reviews.
To me, this is the true Suikoden 3. I know it doesn't share the world, and I know Murayama directed that one also. But it was an awful slog, as were 4 and 5. There's parts of this that remind me of 3. Like Nowa's home town. Certain camera transitions. Also (spoilers) and I'm not all the way through, but it seems like there might be other povs that it switches to, but it keeps it more like Suikoden 2 and not like 3's structure where you have to replay the same days. It moves at a great pace. I didn't even realize I was 10 hours in. Where Suikoden V was just begging me to quit at that point.
I enjoyed Suikoden 1 and 2 and really liked Octopath Traveller 2 so going to give this one a go after I have finished FFVII again (nearly there) and played Dragon Quest V.
@@Xygor Possibly, it's out in a few days too. It's based on an Akira Toriyama manga, it was the last project he was involved with before passing away in March. It's an action rpg very similar to the Metal Max franchise, combat and exploration is both on food and in customizable vehicles. There's also a town/city building activity with housing thrown in :D
@@Aussie_TomI was reading that manga when it got announced. I plan to get it later. I love the way his characters, and vehicles look. I don’t know if Dragon Quest can really carry on after 12 with all the people that created the games now passed, or left the company
Eiyuden is prounced with a long A sound. Not like "I". "ei" being pronounced like "I" is a Germanic pronunciation. In Japanese e is pronounced like "eh" and i is prounounced like "ih". Combining them gives an "ay" like the end of "today". It rhymes with "hey you den" Eiyuu means "Hero" in Japanese.
just started playing it and so far the visuals look great and I did preorder on the switch but it got shoved back to next month. So I just got it on gamepass and playing on my computer
This is a great game. I'll probably echo alot of people, but it is indeed alot like Suikoden, to the point where you could put certain things side by side. But, it's also like Golden Sun with its battle music and puzzle mechanics, and even a bit like Ni No Kuni II with the way the Headquarters is managed. And contrary to what people say, this is clearly NOT AN HD-2D GAME. It's a 3D game with 2D character sprites. Note that you can rotate the overworld map 360 degrees and the tilesets are not designed with any 2D art in them. There's nothing wrong with this. I just want people to understand what they're getting into with this.
Thanks for all your thoughts, and you’re right about the graphics! There are times you can’t pivot the camera and it’s similar to H2-2D I would say though.
Yea so I got my backer download codes for switch and PS5 and I can tell you that neither version has the graphic settings option, so you can't turn off that blurring effect. I can also report the switch version has much worse load times. ps5 loads in in 2-3 seconds and switch version seems to take 10 seconds or more every load screen. Then again I do have the OG 1st wave switch so that might be a factor. I do feel that my switch version feels a bit choppy.
im still early on in Eiyuden Chronicles, just past the tree folk area, but So far it definitely feels like a true spiritual successor to suikoden to me. It has its rough edges, theres some lag with menus and action buttons some times, and honestly the main menu screen isnt really a great layout IMO, having to constantly hit my shoulder buttons to get to the menu, then hit different buttons to navigate to the screen i want, seems over complicated. Story has been pretty fun though, it goes a LITTLE lighter than suikoden, theres more "fun" and less "tragedy" but not to the extent that it really ruins things. Mechanics are great, battle and recruitement are exactly what i would want out of a suikoden game. Character balance needs a second look, mages seem week, double slot characters seem to never be worth it, and some of the combo attacks seem to do more or less the same damage as acting on your own, so only a few special ones have seemed worth it so far. The mini games have been pretty fun so far, and im genuinely exited each time i go to progress the story. To sum it up, despite a few flaws, Best rpg ive played in quite awhile.
@Xygor I've waited so long for it, I can't take chances. 😅😅 Hard to believe this is almost celebrating the 30th anniversary of the first Suikoden. Feels like yesterday, I was hunting for obscure Stars of Destiny
@@Xygor I just got to finish the recruiting part. It just feels like Suikoden 6. I have been waiting years for a game like this. The art style and combat I enjoy. I love how crazy Francesca is. Even during combat, she yells at the enemy lol.

Great content my friend. I can't wait to get my hands on this
Hope you enjoy it!
That intro music, chefs kiss.
Yes, it’s great!
SO glad i backed this game, and looking forward to its success
You won’t be disappointed!
They must have updated the frequency in battles, because they are more frequent now than a couple per dungeon
Yes, i'm getting it, yes I'm a long time Suikoden fan and I wish and hope they make a physical copy of the artbook.
I hope so too, the art is so good!
I'm pretty sure the option to turn off the depth of field blur is only available for the pc version. Hopefully consoles will get it added. What I would really love is a slider for it, because I don't want to turn it off entirely. I just want to adjust the severity of it.
That is true, I learned later that option is only available for PC as you say.
hadn't seen this one yet, but i'll definitely be picking it up. looks fantastic
It really is!
It's out and you've beaten it? Gah!! Was hoping to be done with the project before it came out. Must resissst... through these tears 😭
I got an advanced copy
This game looks amazing so I am still pretty excited. It doesn't appear to be perfect, but what is.
Hoping you like it and review it!
i cant wait i need this game NOW RIGHT NOW
Yes you do!
Two more days but I need it NOW!!!
It’s so good!
Can't wait to play this game! Trying to finish a few other games like Final Fantasy Rebirth, octopath travelers 2 and unicorn overlord which all will take me some time to beat.
True, there’s a lot of good stuff out there!
Goddamnit why do i have to work today😂
It will be here waiting for you when you're done!
Definitely worth the wait.
Its Like what i expected from this game, i have a copy and today i start playing it
Excellent!
OT2 is basically the pinnacle of modern takes on retro JRPGs for me
Thanks, I ended up really liking the low encounter rate! And yeah it’s amazing!
The more SNES style like Octopath Traveler, especially straight up enhanced SNES games like FF PR games, is actually painful to my eyes due to appearing blurry on HD systems.
gotta turn the depth of field off
Octopath Traveler is fine. But the FF Pixel Remasters are just LAZY cash grabs.
This game is beautiful but does not run well . The menus are so sluggish
I can't wait to play this game. My only issue is that Switch users were screwed from early access via Digital Deluxe and weren't able to preorder.
Hope you can get it as soon as possiblle!
Physical for switch also says it releases next month? Idk if that’s just Amzn though
This looks awesome
I assure you it is!
Ok, you convinced me! i was waiting for a price drop
Been looking forward to this for years, I even helped fund it. It's a shame it's all been soured by a bad English localisation team
I like the localization!
I gotta wait til May for the physical Switch release but glad to see it'll be well worth the wait!
I think it will be!
I wonder why physical switch is so far out? Did they not want the game to be leaked before launch, or was there a logistical problem that made it delayed
Ive been gettin an itch for an old jrpg style game. Never tried suikoden either, so im excited to try this.
It’s the perfect one for that itch!
What did you play this on? It seems like the switch port is in a really rough state. I wanted to own a physical copy, but it seems like steam may be my best bet.
Steam, and it sounds like that’s the far superior version right now.
Someone else noted that, I didn’t realize it.
Yeah there’s no way to. I didn’t notice a discrepancy until I loaded it up on my steam deck and started noticing way more encounters. I didn’t get any on my pc (I was getting framerates of over 200)
Oh it's out? nice!!
Kickstarter backers were able to get both Beta access, and some physical copies arrived early. It releases publicly on April 23rd
Yep!
Let's go !! I am downloading right now ! ❤
Excellent! That's the right call!
I'm very interested and I hope it'll pay to the wait!
I Can't wait to get my hands on this game 😭😭😭🔥
It’s so good!
Dang it... it comes out next week but my budget is already allocated to Stellar Blade .... well might get it next month. Looks promising.
It sure is!
Kinda interesting Nintendo World Report gave it a 5/10 and was very critical about it.
I definitely have to disagree with them!
Have seen mostly postive reviews so far personally
they blasted the switch version which has terrible performance issues the ps and xbox versions runs fine
Those reviews are weird. They take a multiplatform game and heavily lean towards only one platform for reviewing. They don't separate the overall game from the performance of one platform. I'm not one of those "reviews are bought and paid shilllssssssss" or whatever. But I really dislike unprofessional reviews.
I just got my castle and am recruiting characters now. I'm happy with it. Although it feels like something is missing and I don't know what that is🤔
Glad you’re mostly liking it!
Right on!
this game gives me heavy Breath of Fire IV energy
I can see that from some of the graphical style.
Oh man, between this and Sandland, I'm gonna be a very busy boy.
Haven't heard of that one, should I check it out?
I can’t wait to pick it up!
You’ll love it!
I need to hurry up and clear some backlog so I can get this!
Do it!
Thanks for the info, sucks that option isn’t available outside of PC!
Suikoden 1 2 3 were my childhood ❤
Mine too! You'll love this game.
@@Xygor i bought it at 40sec of watching your video!
Also bought the older version of this game also.
Playing on the steamdeck like a champ!
I played for 13 hours straight, I haven't done that since bg3
Nice!!
Ya know what i didn't even need to watch more than 2 minutes, gonna go buy this on Switch
Great!
im still early on in Eiyuden Chronicles, just past the tree folk area, but So far it definitely feels like a true spiritual successor to suikoden to me.
Absolutely can't wait! The Xbox has been so devoid of jrpgs!!😊
Get it as soon as you can!
I’m definitely going to give it a try
I don't think you'll regret it!
The antagonist even looks like Luca Blight
The creator died? Akira Toriyama and the creator of Suikoden both died this year? This year has been rough.
Yep, and it has.
I skimmed this video to avoid surprises/spoilers, but I can't wait to fire this sucker up!
I think you’re going to like it! I only really discuss the intro at high levels because it’s part of the media kit/marketing materials.
@Xygor I've waited so long for it, I can't take chances. 😅😅
Hard to believe this is almost celebrating the 30th anniversary of the first Suikoden. Feels like yesterday, I was hunting for obscure Stars of Destiny
What a great game I am loving it!
Isn't it great? What do you like most about it so far?
@@Xygor I just got to finish the recruiting part. It just feels like Suikoden 6. I have been waiting years for a game like this. The art style and combat I enjoy. I love how crazy Francesca is. Even during combat, she yells at the enemy lol.
Having played through the game, I can only say I wish they had tried harder, and tried a few new things instead of going through the motions.
I really want to love it…but there’s something missing. Can’t pin point it yet but it’ll come to me.
