For those wanting a overall on this video. (I own one of these cars making 350+whp and 166k miles. so I give some of my own thoughts)
Delete the emissions. Install a down pipe (catted or not catted is your choice. The catted just helps with diesel smell outside the car). Delete swirl flaps (they fail and will kill the motor). Tune the car for the deletes (I recommend Malone). Replace the Harmonic Balancer (they do fail or already did on your car). Replace the Thermostat and water pump at 100k (operating coolant temps will be around 190F or 85-90C. Vacuum lines need to be done often (mileage depends on driving behaviors) watch tune my euro's video for tips). Change your air filter out (you know you've not done it so do it). Replace the Glow plug module and glow plugs at the same time (trust me...about every 80k miles average). Run the oil you want (if deleted) otherwise run the OEM recommended oil due to ash on DPF. Change your fuel filter every 10-15k miles.
Another note. You should be using the North American BMW Diesel owners page on facebook. We have tons of documentation for reference materials as well as tuner reviews and lots of helpful people.
He says to drive the car hard. Its a diesel. Truck diesel motors rely on load (towing). So with a diesel car it helps to get above 2k rpm once in a while. Driving above 2k rpm the car moves out like a rocket so be cautious doing this in wet or cold environments.

HtownDCT anywhere between 40+mpg on road trips and as low as 28mpg city. Average for mine was 35mpg with spirited pulls during commutes. I have now sold this car and moved on to a 2015 Chevy SS. Didn’t have the desire to spend $8000 on maintenance costs for what was needed. Had my transmission blow the E clutch for 5th gear. Service your transmission regularly and that won’t happen. I bought mine with higher miles so it was too late

I have a 335d. Since owning it in the span of 2 years I have change harmonic balancer, (water pump, thermostat, belts, and pulleys ), (glow plugs and controller), motor mounts, (Transmission and Deferential Oil), and the usual maintenance. Right now @ 160k miles, it still runs like new.

I did the same maintenance and love the car. But I got the 200mi warning and had to park the car for almost six months. Just had a tune done and I am in the process of removing the swirl flaps. Can’t wait to drive my baby again. Never thought I would love diesels so much.

Mine is on 298,000. Totally reliable in the last 12 years. I do look after it, services early, every 10k. Gearbox Transmission serviced every 100k . I did the timming chain at 200k but they said it was still in good shape. Never gonna sell it. I have the original engine, turbos and gearbox. But i upgraded the diff to an LSD for better traction. It makes a big difference, huge improvement.
I recomend a full emmision delete to stop dpf cat egr getting bunged up with black carbon soot. Plus a remap. Mine is running about 330 hp 480lbs. It can produce a bit more power but i backed off for durability because the exhaust temps were too high. i get high 30s mpg in town and mid 50s mpg on the highway. Can do over 500 miles per tank on a long highway run. Great car.
I tried an F30 and the new G21. Steering feel and driver interaction has been removed. Plus the G21 steering tech interferes if you cross the white line in the road trying to pass a cyclist. So for me I prefer the driving experience of an E91 chassis. So I paid off the balloon payment and kept it. Maybe ill buy another one. Im thinking to add a 335i for fun and keep using 335d as my daily.

Mines now on 336,000. 2010 330d 245hp stock 1 turbo model now tunned to 330hp. I service it early every 10k regardless of what the onboard computer sayes which is 18 to 20k. Gearbox at 100k 180k 260k and last month.
I did all the emmisions and swirl flap deletes. balancer. After watching this video ill do the
    Vacum lines
    Glow plug controler.
Fuel consumption is sensitive to tyre choice and a stock 330d 6spd manual is much lighter and more efficient than a heavy 335d auto. About 10mpg.
On Bridgestone Turanza's early 2010s and before emission delete & remap low 30s mpg in town mid 40s highway. Then....
With remap and emmision delete, high 30s mpg in town mid 50s mpg highway. Then.... In 2018...
Switched to Michelins. Tried Cross climate + and 2 in Winter (Both are great in snow ice mud), E.Primacy (poor in wet or bumpy roads) and Primacy 4+ in Summer, incredible difference compared with tyres from 10 years ago.... Much less roll resistance friction.
40s mpg in Town, mid 60s mpg on the highway is possible if you cruise gentley in top gear 55 to 65 mph.
Does anyone have advice on the timming chain ? After 336,000 miles should i change them ? Its a big job over $2000.
Mine has just over 330 hp and 480lbs torque. Can pull 6th gear all the way past 160 mph but you are getting close to red line.
I highly recommend birds bmw B1 dynamics kit with an LSD. If you can handle a neutral car then also their anti roll bar kit. Best $5k you will spend on the car. Ride quality, traction and body control are transformed. At some point the 3rd gen 2000s tech turbo will need replacing so ill upgrade it to one of the latest GTD 5th gens. These spool up from 1250 rpm and are good for 360hp 520lbs + all from 1 turbo.

If you live in countries like Sweden, however, you cannot remove the particle filter because in Sweden there is a car inspection on cars. Once a year, one of the things that is checked is what comes out of the exhaust pipe. Result there may be a driving ban on the car Or a re-inspection

My 2 cents worth. With respect to the gearbox, based on experience I would change out the mechatronic sleeves every 80,000 miles as these will compress with the heat, irrespective of how often you change the oil, they will simply not seal as well as they do when new. If you change them every 80K then you won't get into a situation where at 100-120K (which I did) you find you need to replace the seals effectively halfway between an 80K and 160K transmission service and will be spending money on more on another new filter and transmission oil (expensive).

Mine is a 2010 model. Hes right about the emissions delete. On mine we did a triple delete of the EGR and hollowed out the internals of the dpf and the cat. So if the saftey engineer takes a look it appears to be there. But they are empty. With this setup a tune is needed. I have over 350hp and over 450lbs torque. Which is enough for the transmission. Also important is fitting an LSD. This makes a big difference.
I do my oil and filter changes halfway. Not at 18k like bmw says but at 9k miles. And the oil is always dirty and black and thick like treacle.
Another important thing for longevity are the gearbox and diff oil and filters. I do mine either at 100,000km or every 5 years. And my mechanic always checks everything for leaks at the services.
What i have not done yet is the timming chain. Does anyone know when does that need to be done ? Im on 268,000 and love the car. I want it to last forever.

Nice Vid. Bought mine in 2015 with 95k miles on it. I'm kind of a super commuter, Western Pennsylvania to Chicago quite often. It's over 270k miles now. I wish I could have done the ABC delete back then but had different priorities. Now the DPF is intolerable so we are getting rid of that and tuning it. Waiting on parts. Yes, I am putting thousands into a car with 270k on it. Planning to run it forever if I can. Agree with most of what you brought up. I've run Castrol full synthetic and change oil every ~13k miles (whatever was recommended). Another thing I do is run PS Diesel Kleen, every other tank in the summer and every tank in the winter. Other problems I've had along the way were just normal wear and tear. Its been a fantastic car and if I ever total it I'll buy another.

Just got a 2012 X5D with 100k miles, no idea about its maintenance history. Driving it back to Tx from Fl I opened up the Torque app on my phone and saw coolant was only getting to 160F. Swapped thermostat and did oil change and air filter the next weekend. I used Rotella T6 since I use it for all my cars, but didn't know about the soot buildup issue running that oil with being deleted, so thanks for the tip. I'll switch to Euro Pennzoil Platinum 5w40 until I get deleted which will hopefully happen later this year.

    • @sullygtx9350
      @sullygtx9350 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@OzzieMozzie777 The environment in which the engine is running as well as other factors have a large impact on how well and long something can operate for. The engine now makes another 100hp and 150tq from factor specs after a tune. That's as well as 110° Texas heat make oil break down much faster so running a higher viscosity is beneficial to me. I now use Valvolie blue 5w40 synthetic and change it every 5k miles. Soot buildup on the oil is a big problem with the M57, so unless you are running a secondary oil filter system you should keep the oil change intervals around the 5k mile mark. Most M57s with bearing issues are going extended intervals.

The Malone tune is about 1000. The delete parts are about 300 bucks for a vrsf down pipe, 120 for a bimmer tune egr delete, 50 for a bimmer tune swirl flap delete. You will need to cut open the scr to remove the cat and weld shut. Labor costs can vary but in the bmw diesel groups there are mechanics that can do it.

I can confirm all of that after owning a 535d and a 525d for a total of 12 years. But keep in mind that DPF delete is not legal in EU Countries. Also the AGR (forgot the american name... Exhaust oil something)? has to stay on. So... If you want to go the legal way, clean or replace those parts, when ever you feel that they impact the performance of your car. Because all the carbon that they should let out of the engine will stay inside and clog up the engine.

Fantastic video! You are right on target with your list. How do remember all the points and commentary while you're driving? You'd make a good priest! I have a 2010 335d with 155k miles. After getting a bunch of emission-related codes and an engine malfunction light (in yellow, thank God!), I limped home. I had the car towed to BPC in Raleigh, NC. They're doing the delete, engine mounts, rear control arm, MOTUL (this is their recommended brand) oil change, rear control arm, and a few other things. I love this car--bought it new for 40K out the door. They tell me the carbon build up isn't bad, but I am leaning towards a walnut blast and new vacuum lines and swirl delete. What do you think? Also, since BMW and my local mechanic stood by the lifetime trans fluid recommendation of BMW, I'm wondering if it's too late to change the fluid?

Hey Gato, i'm from nova scotia. Just subscribed but have been watching your channel for a long time. You are very knowledgable with cars. I have a 2017 type r (bought new) and a e90 2006 bmw 330i manual (had it for 10 years). The beemer is my daily and it has 250000kms (around 150000 miles) - its a great car. However lately, there has been a drain on the battery and 2 separate mechanics have not been able to figure out what's causing the drain . Haven't been able to start it in the morning when it's cold (I'm in canada!) and I just keep a battery charger on it overnight now. Any thoughts on this? thanks

      Hi buddy,
Yes you will pass. But does your saftey / emissions inspector also check if the Cat / DPF and EGR are still present ?
I got mine hollowed out internally just in case he ever checked. Instead of swaping for a de cat down pipe.
The effect is sharper throttle response and much more bottom end punch / torque especially if you ask the tunner to focus on that area. 1200 rpm and up. In stock form its after 1600 rpm.
Also a small improvement in noise and exhaust volume. Not much but maybe 10 to 15 % more as a best guess.
