Another great video. You have progressed so much since I have started watching your video’s, many years ago 😏 Are you attending the London Gaming Market tomorrow.
Great list, unlike a lot of other Mario ranking videos it feels like you actually put effort and thought into each game rather than just repeating the majority opinion.
Especially cool to see The Lost Levels get some love as it always gets placed near the bottom by people who seem like they didn't really give it a chance.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii was the first video game I ever played. So while its not the most creative Mario game, (especially now that Wonder exists) it still holds a special place in my heart!
Handing out S-tier like candy...
Yes please more tier list videos! Zelda, Monkey Ball, Metroid, sonic. Go!
My favorite 2D Mario is Donkey Kong 94, with its 100 levels of platform puzzles, the precise control of acrobatics that will appear later in Mario 64, the risk-reward system with chono and light collectibles. More than a remake, it's a love letter to the arcade game, the father of platformers and to Mario.
I replayed the entire mainline series this year in preparation for Wonder, so it's nice to see someone else's take on the series as well.
I think, if anything, it reinforced my thoughts that the NSMB games are technically really solid in terms of level design but aren't very memorable. I was really pleasantly surprised with NSMB 2, of all games, though. It's my pick for standout of the NSMB series despite it being the most derided one due to its coin collecting gimmick (which, incidentally, I find really fun).
Glad to hear someone else enjoys New 2 as well! I feel like it’s mostly forgotten but has some of the best level designs of any Mario! Plus the coins are fun!
3 and World are definitely S tier
Finally somone who respects mario lost levels.
Great call on New Super Mario Bros. U ...definitely the best of the New series.
Love the physical tier list! Keep up the awesome videos
Amazing ranking 👏 we need super Mario land on switch online
Excellent video! I love these kinds of rankings. I may not agree with all of your choices but I understand them because you do a great job of explaining your decisions.
I would love to see more of these. One series I think would be really interesting to rank is Kirby because there's so much variety in those games. Also, Zelda!
I weirdly agree with most of this. I was a little surprised to hear you say Mario 2 USA is harder than lost levels, though. I thought the original physics were much less forgiving.
USA physics are surprisingly snappy and I found it pretty hard to adapt to it, so I found both games to be pretty difficult
I'm right there with you on Super Mario Land.
If you have a SNES the first game you should get is the Mario World + All Stars cart. Heck, if that's the only cart you have, you'll have fun for a long long time.
Kudos for going with your own instead of popular opinion.
As always, very great video Nick ! I adore the fact that your tier list is « physical » instead of on a website like others do. It gives the amazing retro vibe I’m always looking for on your channel 😀 I’m from Quebec in Canada but I as a kid, I got a gamecube US and a PAL one and always collected both version of every game. So your always the best of both worlds for me !! I will always support your channel❤
I need a bigger table for these physical lists! 😅
Great video ! Now I need more physical tier lists !
I tottally agree with the Super Mario Wonder ranking at A... I think most people are amazed by it beucase the previous entries were really not that great..
It is a fantastic game, but not to a level of Super Mario 3 or Super Mario World as some have said. I think there is some weird difficult balancy as well when we got to the special levels, those are way above the most difficult level on the normal worlds, and some have the same 5 star ranking.
As for Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 e card reader levels they have all been put onto Nintendo Online its pretty cool. Some of the levels are extremely hard.
Anyone who ranked super mario land on the same level as SMB3 and super mario world is bright guy whit great taste. It give us daisy. After all.
The super mario u deluxe for switch also include super luigi bros u
Here's my unpopular 2D mario tier list:
1 SMB 2
2 SMB World
3 New SMB
4 SMB 3
5 SMB World 2
6 SMB Wonder
7 SMB
(Up to here all the games are S or A+ tier for me)
8 SM Land 2
9 SM Land
10 Lost Levels (I think it feels more like a dlc or level pack than a new game)
11 all other "New" SMB games after the first one (I think they also seem like ports or deluxe version re-releases of the same game even the level design are very similar)
And yeh I consider World 2 a mainline Mario game as it feels much more like a Mario platformer (challenging platformers with great level design and ideas) to me than a Yoshi game or at least what the Yoshi platformers are today (charming super chill platformers)
Loved the video! Totally agree on the ranking. Would be awesome if you showed some gameplay from each of the Marios when you were talking about each game :D
On the Super Mario Bros for the NES we were blown away about how good it was & then about a year later we were like, Where's Luigi? It was so good no one noticed where his brother was! So on my cartridge for the NES on the back I have Permanent marker: "Where's the Luigi" after the Where's the Beef Commercial. Ha-Ha!! Not sure how I missed it, but I didn't know about
New Super Luigi on the Wii U. I'm going to have to get that next! Thanks again for the Retro Break!
Great video as always man! Really enjoy hearing your thoughts and memories with all these games
Wonder gets an S from me because I prefer short, breezier levels with tons of variety and replayability. But I haven't played every 2D entry in the series so keep that in mind :)
I played SMB2 Mario madness for the 1st time this year and was actually very impressed! While I respect the original, I thought the character selection and playstyles of madness were amazing! I wish they'd revisit concepts from that game. I'd place it next to SMB3 on A tier as they each did something unique and different than the original. Original now plays more like a B or C tier, but it's nostalgic. Good video and explanations!
Not heard of that, what changes does it make to the regular game?
@@RetroBreak Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach all jump differently (peach floats, so does Luigi but more like Yoshi does in later games) and they also removed the countdown timer which made the levels feel more "puzzle-ly".
Awesome video, thanks for the walk down memory lane
You forgot mario run
I would say Mario land 2 is better than Mario land 1 due to the better control and more uniqueness, but still pretty good list!
Objectively it is the better game, but I just prefer playing the first one because of its more fast paced levels and physics.
SMB3 will always stay at #1, and Mario Run at the bottom.
Always wanted to see a tierlist of the 2D Mario games from a TH-camr I like, awesome. :)
Any other series you’d like to see me rank in the future?
@@RetroBreak Hmmm, ranking every portable console out there.
I like the tier list format 👍 I haven’t played all of these yet, but the two revisions I would make if it was my list would be: 1) Mario Advance 4 is honestly a great port if you ask me! Maybe it’s just because it’s the version I grew up with, but it never felt squished on the GBA screen to me, and I like the visuals a lot more than the NES version of SMB3 (and probably the SNES version, too). And 2) I tend to think Mario Wonder will be remembered as an S-tier game, but like you said, it’s hard to judge fairly since it’s so new. There are a couple things I don’t love about it (a bit too easy overall, and the dialogue gets annoying), but this is probably the most fun I’ve had playing a modern video game since I got back into the hobby around 2019.
As always, a great video! Love your stuff 🤙
Super Mario Land 1 and 2 are my favourite games of all time. When GB Studio come about I started making a remake of SML1 so it looked graphically like SML2. But its a project beyond my reach I think. Hopefully someone out there reading this whose much more talented than I am who can give it the face lift it deserves!
I don’t think GB studio would be the right way to do it. The platforming physics would need so much tweaking. But good luck to anyone willing to try!
Think this is the first time i've agreed with a tier list! The mario 3 card reader levels have recently been dropped into a rom, worth a google as it may make a nice stream/vid.
I'm going to join you in controversy and agree on Mario Land 1 vs 2. SML 1 is so memorable for me, and I get more excited talking about the levels than with SML 2. I know most people prefer SML 2, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only SML 1 fan out there.
I agree the first Mario on on the original gameboy had something special to it
Great video as usual! Yes please, more tier lists and more wario(land)! A Zelda tier list would be fantastic. I agree that Super Mario Land is S tier. The only thing that bothers me a little bit is that some of the levels are "real places" like Easter island etc. which is a bit boring. By the way, you forgot Super Mario 35. 😉 It was so much fun, it was my most played Switch game for a long time.
I’ll definitely do a Zelda one sometime! :D
@@RetroBreak yay! Keeping my fingers crossed. ^^
☺
no gameplay tho.i think would make the video more interesting.
I’ll try to add some next time!
Original SMB is S all day long. 6 Golden Coins is S and many orders of magnitude better than Marioland 1. I don't know how you don't rate the GBA remakes the same as the originals. You don't see any reason to play the GBA versions? How about portability? Also SMA 4 has the extra levels (which are on Switch now). Where is Donkey Kong 94?

The cropped screen makes super mario bros deluxe impossible to view as anything other than an oddity. Bad game to play.
Mario Land 1 as S Tier is a pretty controversial choice, I think Mario Land 2 is obviously superior. I also think Yoshi's Island is at least as good as Mario World. Apart from these points, the list makes sense to me.
SMB 2 Japan: F rank. Mario Land 1: D rank. Bad bad games.
I agree with most of it, specially with Mario Maker in S tier. Making your own levels and playing challenging levels from other player was incredible.
What I don’t understand is the S tier super mario land, which is not only S tier but also above Six golden coins. Anyway, your list your rules! Ty for the video.
