And lots of seeds for a cheap price is much more realistic. In real life it'd be crazy to get a packet of carrot or cucumber seeds and only get 1 seed!!! Lol
I've always felt so weirded out that you can't replant your own stuff too. It makes sense to sacrifice a strawberry for a handful of seeds for example. Dragon quest builders worked that way.
This was an interesting episode! Great job as always, Josh! As someone trying to learn game dev and programming I liked hearing about the studio’s experiences. I really like how the game incorporated the weather system and changes in the atmosphere with the sun shifting for different seasons! It really adds a nice level of immersion to the game. I think focusing on a smaller scale next time and focusing more on the core aspects from the initial campaign for the next title may help? I feel like a lot of the initial ideas were pretty solid, and may have gotten a bit lost. Regardless, Sunnyside is definitely a unique title and worth checking out!
I bought this on PS5, and I really wish the controls worked better on the controller. It doesn't utilize the d-pad to scroll through the menu and dialog choices. It's so slow to move the cursor around with the analog stick like a mouse. It makes things feel more clunky.
I haven't bought the game yet (too many on my wishlist), but hearing about you deviating from traditional farming sims, like with the seeds and the mine checkpoints, certainly moves it up higher on my list. Please tell me you also allow us to save anytime and not just autosave when going to bed at night? I never understood why sooo many farming sims do that...
Haven't played it, so I don't know how it feels and might be wrong, but the idea of taking away the 'capitalism' aspect of farming sims (which people find fun), and trying to balance that out with making places take longer to get to (not fun), seems misguided. It doesn't really make sense for time management to be the challenge of the game in the first place, since the player is fully in control of how long days take anyway. Especially with 1-hour days being an option. There's a difference between "I have to manage my time wisely," and "I feel like this game is wasting my time." Overall, it sounds like this was way too ambitious of a project for such a small team with little to no experience prior + It feels like this game was developed more on personal ideals than what players of the respective genres actually enjoy.
I have played it and you're totally right. They took the fun out of farming and getting around anywhere is a pain. They definitely put their own ideals in the game too and force them on the player character because your character just talks without you having any say in what they say. They made farming pointless because it isn't the best way to make money in the game. So why bother farming and why bother having multiple farms? I never got to the point of having multiple farms because the game is just tedious and not fun. :(
@@mandy_was_here5382 That's sad to hear. I love the concept of this game, as it blends two of my favorite gaming genres, but it sounds like the execution of it wasn't the best 😔
It sounds like Floatopia will be free-to-play with gacha elements, though it's unclear what form they will be. I had a similar questions seeing the trailer for it wondering what the actual gameplay will be, not just shiny trailer visuals, as well as how it'd be monetized.
I loved seeing this indepth interview with the developers for Sunnyside. I've been interested for quite some time and actually bought the game on releaseday, but i haven't beaten my backlog far enough yet to try it out! Now i really want to as soon as i finished my current game though.
(commenting before the live) Well now I am invested but also concerned to know the tea. I just wishlisted the game today and started looking into reviews but there are only a handful of recent reviews out there and not much of them talk about their likes/dislikes or go into details on the whys of the game. They just describe the game and gameplay in their reviews which is repetitive. Anywho, it makes me wonder if a lot of people actually like this game or like it enough to keep playing it. So I will patiently wait for the live to get some tea 👀😄
When I was listening to the devlogs I was honestly so worried for the sunnyside devs honestly, like Iw as excited for them but when i kept hearing how much things costs I kept going. Oh no. Oh no. They are gambling on their game. xD It's good you believe in something, but don't gamble on something. Focus on making an INSANELY successful game and THEN work on a project that costs some money and even then go overboard. Heck make a stacker cat game mockup game or a mini game thing with a visual novel twist since you have an amazing writer. I think they should make a small, easy, tycoon game or something to just earn some money, a quick, simple, but good game for a couple bucks on pc/mobile that a lot of people would like. That won't take a long time and will cost little to no money. Use assets, edit assets, yes, some assets look bad, but be....cheap. Start cheap. Build off of it, it's okay. I just want them to have some money coming in, but I know they will be so so busy with sunnyside. Don't buy a lot of music or art assets. Art you might need later yeah, jelly fox is amazing, and incredible, but there are great asset packs not a lot of people use to buy affordable just make a game that will be very affordable and easy to make but just focus on it being very small but very good. Don't keep adding things to it. Obviously this is just an idea, but i feel so so bad they've gambled so much on the game. It's a HUGE project. I barely started learning/coding/godot 3d and gamedev stuff is HARD dude, it's confusing, and it will probably take me years just to learn that. They are very ambitious, and ambition is a beautiful strength. I just hope they can work on some small scale stuff, get some feedback on a demo before spending like a year or something on it to see if a large scale of people like it. if not, scrap it and make something that will get big and have a lot of interest but is small and can make a lot of money. Remember that even a $5 game adds up--and honestly easy, simple 2d graphics. There are plenty easier scale cozy games you could make. I just want them to have money coming in, I'm so worried about them tbh
I always wanted to play this game, unfortunately my PC kinda died on me when the game released and hearing the insights of the creators about this makes me more wanting to play it 😭 soon 🥲
Love the transparency you guys have with Sunnyside's development. Congrats on the game release, and all the success to future updates and projects ❤

I love those interviews with developpers. It makes me see other sides of the game and makes me want to buy it when it will go on sale
sunny side definitely seems like a hidden gem
wish all the best for all who worked on it
I love seeing the behind the scenes. This is such a good honest interview done by an amazing host ❤
It was such an interesting episode! The devs are so sweet
49:01 What an insight! Actually I was wondering where the inspiration for mixing Japanese and Western elements came from.

It's too bad about save anytime. I wish it was easier and more games could do it, even if it was just at save points like the journal.
Had my eye on this game for a long time now. Has the crash issues been fixed for console yet? I would like to own this game on Xbox.
