  • The best skiers out there don’t always make it to the pro level. For Utah’s Marcus Caston, it took capitalizing on his big break with strong, technical skiing and making turning cool again.

    Sometimes less IS more... A lot of todays ski footage is spiny twisty stuff and personally for me clean turns and lines is what skiings about, whether is fast carving of groomed slopes, smooth turns in powder or hacking the bumps. Love this guys skiing !!

      Ski film maker Greg Stump introduced Scott Schmidt, Glen Plake and Mike Hattrup to the world in a series of ski films
      Ike The Blizzard of AAHHH’s, License to Thrill, Maltese Flamingo. Personally I owned copies of these films. I watched them again and again.Scott Schmidt was my ski hero. His style was dynamic. Now I can watch Marcus Caston ski.

    I would argue that Scot Schmidt is the best skier of all time. His smear turn style is legendary. It's beautiful, angular, and powerful. It's how people should aspire to ski (at least, I think.) I try to emulate that in my own skiing. It's pure.

    Nice vid. I think it’s laughable how little technical skill most pro skiers have these days. You can be a pro skier for your acrobatic skills, a diminished sense of self preservation, and the ability to change direction and hang on no matter what. The ski community needs more videos of skiers like this guy.

    • @projectshoe

      Jonny G a lot of good skiers out west lack quick tight turns like eastern tree skiers bc of the open bowls they bomb down, not all but some

      @@LastBreathBeaters I’d put the technical turns of the ridge skiers at my local mountain Bridget Bowl up there with anyone. There are some serious technical skiers out west.

      I agree with your assessment. Racers ski with a dynamic balance and learn to recover to stay within the gates. When they Free Ski they they are not constrained by the course and gates. They develop reflexes to recover and are very comfortable at high speed.

      well zig zagging is the beginning of the "return of the turn" I laught at all the studs on 110 underfoot floppers going straight on groomers.. or but wiggling edge to edge (still going straight)

      PhaseSkater , In total agreement with you, that’s what snowboarders do. Eff up the hill for everyone else. Cheers!

    • @TaylorPhase
      @TaylorPhase 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Howski what? Snowboarders are better for the snow than skiers. Snowboarders who suck and scrape snow can smooth out the moguls and choppy snow created by zig zagging skiers. And the advanced snowboards just leave pencil thin lines on the snow or the go straight and flat base the board and it doesn’t even leave a trail in the snow. You’d know that if you left the bunny slopes

    • @howski724
      @howski724 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      PhaseSkater no bunny slopes for me, been skiing 40+ years. I actually enjoy bump skiing, just saying snow boarders DON’T make the kind of consistent bumps, lines, skiers enjoy. Snow boarder bumps are irregular and elongated. That’s the nature of the snowboard turn. And yes they do flatten the hill, I don’t like it. Nothing like watching a snowboarder standing square to the fall line on the steps sliding straight down, board across the hill. Perfect!! But that’s the world we live in at the resorts now. Used to do most of my skiing in the back country to get away from the crowds, not so much anymore. Sounds like we have very different philosophies. It’s probably our age difference. You are a millennial snow boarder and like it flat, I’m an old school skier and like it bumpy and steep. But to say snow boards are better for the hill? That’s hilarious. You should check out Alta ski resort in Utah some day, great place to go. Oh I forgot they don’t allow snow boarding there. Hmmmm
