    Having recently discovered and enjoying your channel I’m starting from the beginning and am so glad I did. I so enjoy your style of presentation and your lament of the decline of ‘pubby pubs’ in favour of ‘Farrow and Ball’ ‘gastro pubs’. Oh to go back to my late 70’s corner boozer with its public bar, saloon bar and ‘offy’.
    Anyone for a game of darts, some pork scratchings and a pint of Fullers ESB? 👍😀

    I mostly drank in the King William IV many years ago. It was still a proper pub. No gastro nonsense. I ought to revisit.

    I did all these pubs in 2016 while visiting from Canada. The White Bear was closed down at the time, glad to see that it has reopened.

    The only pub I really knew when I lived locally (Hampstead and Belsize Park, from 1968-'70) was the Rosslyn Arms, halfway down the hill yowards Belsize. I knew it because my best friend seemed to spend half his life in there. I looked it up just now and see that it closed in 2012 but was intended to open again, with a new name, on 2022. Back in the day te landlord's name was Henry, and my friend (who had no family to share with) used to spend Xmas Day in the pub, with a pork pie for Xmas lunch, commiserating with Henry, who complained that he wasn't allowed to close the pub for even one day in the year.

    Striking reflection in that window, at the flask. Always good, these pub posts. Thank you Tweedy

    Best pubs and history is a stroke of genius. Sad to see that the original Coach & Horses on Heath Street has closed. At one time that was my local.

      Thanks Jim! Yes I thought it would add colour to throw a bit of local history into the mix. Sorry to hear about your old local.

    I'm planning on visiting Hampstead tomorrow after an early kick off at QPR will give me a opportune few hours to take in the old world albeit very expensive charm of this London village and visit a couple of pubs. Had planned on doing the Holly Bush and the Duke of Hamilton but can see there are plenty more nice boozers so may well be coming back for more. Thanks for the enjoyable tour, cheers!!

    I used to go to The Duke of Hamilton a lot.

    its funny I live in north London not to far from Hampstead, and as much as i do enjoy a nice pint in the pubs around the area i some how have this gravitational pull over to the city's west side pubs
    almost as if I was once a Patron in a former life in that area

    I took the tube to Hampstead many times for a walk around it's lovely cobbled lanes followed by lunch and a pint. I remember drinking at the Flask and The Holly Bush. Good to see that the Holly Bush boasts a splendid array of hand pumps. I always walk out of a pub if it has no draught beer, or beers I don't like such as Doom Bar, Bombardier and Marston's Pedigree. I always wanted to try Jack Straw's Castle, but it closed before I could visit.

      Thanks John! Yes despite the tidal waves of cash which have repeatedly swept over Hampstead I think it still retains a lot of charm, and although the pubs (like everything else) have inevitably changed, it's still very much worth a visit, as I hopefully demonstrated in this video...

      Jack Straw's, mmmmmm.... I'd be wary of that one unless of course enjoy intimate relations with other men. well that's what it was well known for back in 80's 90's .

    It was nice to see some traditional looking streets there without all the glass and steel. Very aesthetically pleasing.
    Good luck with this latest iteration of the Tweedy brand. It’s a great idea, but it’s going to be hard work for you visiting pubs and having to drink beer in them all.

      Thank you, and you have the dubious honour of posting the first comment on the new channel! As we've often discussed, TH-cam is a curious beast and I'm not sure whether this strategy of splitting the content off into themes will ultimately bear fruit... But I found with this video I can churn out a (London) based pub video in just a few hours, so I can imagine the temptation to do rather a lot of these (given my new found unemployment status) will be quite high. I didn't want to swamp the main channel with videos like that people didn't feel they signed up for!

      @@TweedyPubs yes I will be interested to see how it goes for you. I’m conscious that my channel combines history and hiking content, but I have such a low subscriber base, I suspect it doesn’t matter (at the moment!).
      I suspect this one will do well. Broad appeal. It’s tough work, though, but I guess somebody has to do it!

      @@WC21UKProductionsLtd I'm similarly left with those two main themes (hiking and history) on my main channel, having moved the wine/pubs off to other channels. They seem very linked to me! I can't really imagine going for a walk without at least a tiny bit of historical interest along the way, even if it's just a lonely tumulus I spot on the OS map when planning the trip.

    Love Hampstead thanks for doing this! You’ll have to do one in Highgate also.

      @TweedyPubs  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good idea! Although despite living not far from there, I don't know Highgate's pubs very well, I've only really been to the Flask. Maybe a good opportunity to get to know those pubs better!

    Loving the videos - couldn't help but notice local resident Bill Oddie outside the Flask in this one! Never a big fan of Hampstead pubs -- always used to prefer Belsize Park - the Sir Richard Steele, the Washington, the Belsize Tavern - gone but not forgotten.

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow I hadn't noticed Bill Oddie until you pointed him out but yes indeed, there he is from 1:33! As I think I mentioned in the video I lived in Hampstead (actually more like Belsize Park) for a short time 20+ years ago, and I remember spotting him on the street several times back then - perhaps I had got so used to it I stopped noticing!
      I know what you mean, when I lived in the area some of those Belsize Park pubs seemed a bit more alive than the pubs of Hampstead did at that time. A definite buzz at the Richard Steele, and comedy nights etc at the Washington.

    Took my now 23 year old son for his first drink in The Duke of Hamilton when he was a week or so old...Oli Reed (and other hell-raisers) reputedly drank there back in the day so thought my son would be in good company...he now prefers the Flask when visiting his Granny in this manor...and this they call progress? Oi vey.

    Love watching your Pub tours around London… we are going to be in London in November and staying in Paddington area… don’t suppose you are doing a video of that area. We are interested in what you call ‘Pubby Pubs’. Not touristy …. We’ll keep watching just in case you come up with one…cheers 🍺

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Chris, really glad you enjoyed the videos! Thanks for the suggestion for a Paddington video. I do have at least one pub I can think of that I like in that area (The Victoria, although I haven't been for perhaps 10 years - I hope it hasn't changed too much!). So I'll do a bit of research and if I can find at least a couple more which look promising that could well be a good candidate for a future video.

    Can understand why you didn't go to the Horseshoe (Camden Brewery) but missing the The Wells Tavern seemed a bit odd. 🤔
