Plumber's Arms, Duke of Wellington, Antelope, Star Tavern, Nag's Head, Grenadier, Horse & Groom, Ye Olde Mitre! An embarrassment of riches! Thank you.

Another trip down memory lane for me. I spent two years working in offices above the Victoria Coach Station and discovered all these gems. I remember the Irish landlord of The Nag's Head and how he did not like pretentious people in his pub. He served a lovely pint of Adnam's Broadside which is a favourite of mine. In the early 90's Nigel Davenport was a lunchtime regular as he lived just down the road. I purposely pretended not to recognise him as I'm sure he would not have appreciated it. I share your dislike of Gastro bars...they 're not pubs anymore as your perfect definition makes clear.

My dad worked for many years in Belgrave Square so nice reminder for me. Thank you. He used to talk about The Plumber's Arms where Lord Lucan's wife ran into after discovering the murdered nanny. Interesting aside also is that Kinnerton Street is where Ghislaine Maxwell had her mews house where the notorious photo of Prince Andrew with Virginia Giuffre was taken.

The government broad arrow (same as the convicts and all government property) is for surveying in this case.

Having a chat about the tedious days work is what pubs are for that and a pint .

I live in Southern Portugal, and love going to the old British pubs when I visit the UK 🍺🍺👍👍

I think the chap taking an interest in your filming as you walk along Groom Place is Tom Aikens, the Michelin star chef (he was a Great British Menu chef some years ago). He has a restaurant, called Muse, very near there.

That kerbside marking is a datum point. I think that they are checked and rechecked by surveyors to ensure accurate recording of levels for future reference.

11:22 The ISO metric for hauntedness is the the Yap scale and is measured with a small dog. According to the only source on this, the standard background of a central London pub is 0.2 yaps (or 200 milliyaps). One 'yap' is enough to be apparent when not being looked for.

Nice “Rivers of London” reference. Peter and Toby would be proud!

I think you will find the Grenadier was not a Fullers pub in the least in last twenty five years to my knowledge, but has stocked a Fullers beer before the GK take over 🤗🤗

I know of a tiny pub in this area, called The Fox and Hounds in Passmore St SW1, a very nice pub.

Actually millionaires and billionaires do go to pubs because the Ineos chemical company billionaire started another company making modern versions of the Land Rover Defender and named the company Grenadier after the pub where he got the idea for the vehicle.

Ye Old Mitre rules! I really don't know why anyone would live in Belgravia in small converted stables. Weird.

I'm bingeing on these vids now. Your description of the gastro pubs inhabiting the carcass of dead pubs was a perfect analogy. Is the Chelsea Potter still on the Kings Road do you know? I am from Newcastle but used to live in London in the late 80s and my first job was working in the Sacha shoe shop along from the CP on the other side of the road and we would go there after work. Happy times.

Chelsea Potter is still on the Kings Road last time I looked, which wasn’t long ago!

Inane babble and talk about tedious banal work lives! The absolute worst conversations to have to hear when you're trying ot enjoy a pint.

I've been binging all your videos and have really been enjoying your pub vids. We seem to have similar taste in pubs. The Antelope is one of my London favs.
Anyway, your points about Belgravia being surprisingly good for 'pubby pubs' despite the fact that your average millionaire would have no interest in pubs are things I agree with. A weird dichotomy there that doesn't make much sense.
Someone already mentioned the Ghislaine Maxwell connection on Kinnerton ST. but did you know you actually filmed her former house in your video as it's the one right across from the pub, number 44. Cheers!

Thanks TKP! This video feels a bit rough around the edges now compared to my newer ones - I didn't do any research beforehand and the camera work is very sloppy in places! It was actually made before I started the @TweedyPubs channel properly, and was originally on my outdoorsy channel, where it didn't really fit. At some point I am planning a return visit to Belgravia to give it the proper Tweedy Pubs treatment!

A lot of Millionaires are millionaires due to the fact of a good upbringing and or being cleverer than average, so I would very much expect them to appreciate good pubs and good beer.

Does anyone know when the Star tavern was founded?
Has it had any other names?

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I believe it was always the Star, and the earliest records I know of it are from the 1840s. The "Tavern" part might have been added later - some earlier records refer to it either as the "Star beer-house" or simply the Star.
Development of Belgravia only started in 1826, so I don't think it could be any older than that.
