Watching these ancient machines reminds me of a friend whose father worked with one of the oldest steam-powered cranes in our town. When his father passed, he dedicated months to restoring the machine, not just to honor his dad but to keep a part of history alive. Seeing it in action again brought tears to everyone who remembered its legacy.
It’s exciting to look back at the 10 oldest heavy machinery in the world! These machines not only represent the beginning of industry, but also demonstrate the incredible creativity and engineering of humans decades ago.
I loved watching these old dozers & scrapers when I was growing up. I would hear the pony engines starting the D7 & D8 cats behind my house in Marshall, WI at 7:30 & I knew they were getting ready to work.
Still have an old Cat D-8 cable dozer with serial number R1937U. It has the same pony motor as the old D-6s. Without an electric starter for the pony motor, one has about a seven foot hand crank that has to reach beyond the front of the blade to crank it. It hasn't been started for over 30 years now, as newer and more easily used equipment was available. This old D-8 had great power though. I think it was originally owned by the military. It is fun to see and watch the old equipment now. I had a friend that when he was in the Seabees was driving an Euclid scraper and turned it too sharp and it turned over. That was in the early 1960s. I had a John Deere gas powered dozer from about 1958, whose owner's manual still reminded you of the danger of holding a lamp over the gas tank when filling it. Thanks for the memories.
Wow, what an incredible piece of history you’ve got there with that D-8! The hand crank story alone gives a glimpse into how tough those machines were-and the operators too! Your Seabees friend must have had some wild stories. Thanks for sharing such a vivid slice of the past!
Hd-41 was a dog only good for pushing coal ! HD 21 also not great but vetter than the 41, 21 was poorly suspended compared to a cat of same capacity, always nose down when pushing dirt ,couldn't get a horizontal grade ...cheers
I used to enjoy watching this old equipment when i was a kid. Actually it wasn't so old at that time. There was that pull type grader towed by a cat,a D8 I believe. It was quite sophisticated. It had an air cooled motor so the operator adjusted th blade with levers instead of manually with those big wheels. When our road was rebuilt. I got to see a lot of cats & scrapers as well as an elevator which was not mentioned in this video. Then there was an oldy, a caterpillar 60, which was used for land clearing.

Despite how far technology has become, these machines still have their own interesting side
yes, it was the premise for the great machines that came after
