My deceased Father was a Master Mechanic on Caterpillars he started back in the late 30s and continued for 40 years. He knew Cat Dozers from front to back. He worked at the Ravenna Ohio Arsenal during WW 2 fixing and operating them. In 1960 when my Dad worked for a Coal Company Mom showed interest in learning to operate so Dad got her permission to be on the property on weekends to learn. Caterpillar got wind she was learning this. So about three later Cat sent a factory rep to watch her. He was greatly impressed and asked her to become a Factory Demo Operator she saw a lot of America. She was a big hit at Equipment shows. Cat paid her very well. She retired in the 1990s. They referred to Mom as CAT LADY. Dad passed in 1991 and Mom in 2000. I still have most of Dad's tools and Cat manuals of repair from D4 up to and including D9. There are lots of great references, and a lot of them have Dad's printed notes in them. These books are not for sale so don't ask.
I ran a 613C with tge elevator years ago. Some days were very interesting the jam you can get your myself in and yet how that articulating machine can get itself out of with out rolling the bowl or cab. There is NO room in the cab but for 1 person and the GC was my brother-in-law father so he rented 2 @ $10,000 a month and we had to figure out how to work them. Once we did they were a huge help on the job site, but when your learning and your hauling ass and you start bouncing and the air seat is going up n down and you try to brake but your bouncing on the brakes making it worse at same time your up n down in the air and can't tell ya how many times I've smashed the boys doing so😲! They were AC cabs brand new and we had a blast on them!!
The 660 is designed to do that, has cutting brakes to steer while the front wheels are off the ground, I've operated many variants including the 666 dual engine version.
I've hauled scrapers out of there and never knew they had the museum. The cat 660 is awesome to see in person. I've walked around and looked at it a few times
Live in the Peoria, Illinois area. All the CAT manufacturing plants were located here at one time, foundry, engine, transmission, hose, etc. All tractors were assembled in Bldg HH in East Peoria, IL. Worldwide parts distribution Morton, IL.
You know the saying: "They don't build them anymore like they used to." 😁 Fun fact: in Montana the company Big Tractor is reviving the Big Bud tractors for farmers. Yes, new Big Buds are being manufactured right now! And Welker Farms was honored to fabricate the centre pivot pins for the first new tractor. 😎🤟

5:30 that’s basically how every armoured vehicle was tested even in WW2. Since they hadn’t created the metallurgical tests that could verify an armour plate yet they just had to take every vehicle round the back of the factory and shoot them a couple times
Very interesting video. I love the old machines, heck I started out with them. My uncle had a grader, couple dozers, and tracked and wheel loaders, and most of them had pony motors. I haven't seen any videos that shows the handle that opens the exhaust valves though. I used to love those quirky gizmo's ect. I will have to check out more of your videos.
My favorite dozer is the D-9H, only because I got to run one at a strip mine. What a beast, I also saw one slide off a low boy, what a mess that made of the road.
Just returned from about my 40th visit to this great Museum. Ryan and Justin both told me about your video Aaron, great views but you know you could have spent 4 hours seeing all the equipment in the Museum and the back yard.
A few years ago I bought a Dodge Ram dually from a guy in Wales, UK, who collects old Caterpillars. He has a Restored Cat 666, dual engined scraper, and a dual D9 to push it with. Probably the only one of those combinations in the UK and/or Europe.
660 KittyCat seriously cool , that snorting Thunberg cringing V8 size of a BMC Issigonis Mini, KittyCat missed a trick by not fitting a second V8 to drive the scraper,s axle.
I work in a township and our road crew has a Caterpillar 12 F from 1970, still runs, one window is smashed and it’s missing most of the panels. Also the tires are bald.
Cat come long from start.they did lots research in canada like oilsand, logging west coast bc,coal western usa and canada.very nice fleet iron tip my hat for.😊
Cat made a 666 to it was the same except it has 2 engines one in the back alot of 660's were first 666 the same with a 651 vs 657 same except the 657 has 2 engines i don't feel that old but i have ran alot of them.
I thought that was a 650 and not a 660 I've run them all and knew the tires were way to small to be a 660 a 660 was one of the first scrappers i ran and on my second trip down the mountain i almost rolled it scared me so bad i bruised my knees from banging on the steering column from shaking i went on to run cat's for over 30 years never rolled one i had a good seat of the pants feel and i have done some of the craziest things with them tractors we had close to 200 scrappers maby around 75 dozers we had 4 D11's let's just say we had alot of equipment retired now and happy we would do jobs as big as 20 plus million cubic yards of earth and rock we built highways bridges tunnels dams housing pads i help build alot of heavy civil..
This video is pretty great. Just a bunch of old farts wandering around an old museum. It didn't really show the cable operated dozers, then hydraulic stuff became popular... tracks were popular, but if you want a big machine, you need elevated tracks.... I would definitely watch the 3 hour version of this video... just sayin.

Glad to see a Letourneau piece in this tour. Seems like that fella never quite gets the credit he deserves for his contributions to the industry.

Those scrapers are meant to do that
