Welcome back to BookTube and congratulations on the baby!!! There were some hot takes in here, which is always fun. Glad its been a good reading year overall for you so far though. I still have to read Tress.
Good to see you, Nick! I loved Dune Messiah too (and drooling over your deluxe edition collection). I really enjoyed Children of Dune too. It is a little strange at times, but I continue to absolutely love the world and complexities of it. If you love Libby, I'd recommend supplementing it with Hoopla. It also uses your library's catalog but often has more audiobook choices -- plus TV shows, movies, graphic novels, and ebooks. Still need to get into Dreams of the Dying. I started it the day I got it, but I am reading so many books right now... I've had that Gene Wolfe book on my TBR since 2017. I'll have to read it. Pretty much want to read everything you've talked about in this video! haha
It’s been a good year! I will definitely check out hoopla! I’ve kept my audible subscription for Book of the New Sun and Discworld stuff for now, but I can see myself canceling my membership in the near future, which if you would have told me that a few months ago I would’ve never have said that lol
Thanks Jon! We all go through slogs. I have t READ a book in like 6 months. All my stories have come from audiobooks recently. You’ll pick something up when you find what calls to you :)
Love seeing you posting again! I also adored Tress (and reading from that beautiful physical edition no doubt helped). Seems like I really need to continue Dune past bk 1! Agree on Assassin’s Apprentice maybe being a universally special read, and while I enjoyed the Farseer trilogy I’m much more hooked by Liveship Traders which I’m in the middle of now. It’s so fascinating seeing the divergence of opinions on Red Seas. I actually didn’t like Lies and then liked the sequel much more, but I could easily see people liking it less who loved Lies. I’m really sorry you didn’t connect to Empire of Silence (daggers to my heart), but it’s not really until Howling Dark that Ruocchio really comes into his own and the series becomes something truly unique and special. He was also right out of college when he published Bk 1 so for a young debut book, I think it’s still a great effort. Please keep going with it!
I had no idea about Rucchio being so young when he published his first book! But I do speak of everyone talking about how he comes into his own in his second book in my full review of Empire of Silence which I’ve already recorded and will be editing sometime this week. I also mention how he fully acknowledges how much he has taken from his favorite books and he isn’t trying to hide it or anything like terry goodkind. Also, I didn’t know about the divergence in red seas! I haven’t read any reviews on it or anything. And as far as Assassains, I fully believe that not only will fitz story grow more important to me, but Hobb as a writer as well. Lastly, I think we spoke about starting The Book of the New Sun together, but I unfortunately started it during by BookTube hiatus lol. I’m going to post that review in the next week or two as well, but it literally became my favorite of all time. Glad to hear from you again! Hope all is well!
@@NICKREADSFANTASY no worries I’m thrilled you started it and loved it so much! I’m gonna have to try it out next year after I filled up this year’s tbr with so much stuff based on commenters’ votes. I’ll look out for your reviews on the way!
Stumbled on your channel looking for fantasy recommendations; looking forward to diving into some of these. Have you ever read anything by Daniel Abraham?
I have not! But I’ve heard good things. My top sci-fi fantasy reccomendations at the moment are: 1. WizardKnight 2. Book of the New Sun 3. A Canticle for Liebowitz 4. Stormlight Archives All but the last one are cerebral reads that take attention and thought. Hope one of these inspired you! Thanks for commenting and subscribing
@NICKREADSFANTASY heck, yeah, man, I appreciate that. Yeah, You got me really curious about this Gene Wolfe fella, I'm going to see if My Library has him. I just set up libby, which is super cool too appreciate you!
You should consider reading the Green Bone Saga. The trilogy is the greatest I've ever read. Please review it after reading it. I like how you give genuine reviews.
I read Jade city. It was a solid read, and I see why people love it so much. However, for me it was just a super solid five star book. It doesn’t stand out to me as much as it does for others. I will 100% finish the series and do a series wrap up when I finish!
If you want an incredible, “bantery” friendship, and just overall awesome book, far superior to all incredible books you listed, the red rising. I’ve read almost every single book on your list, and while some of them are truly amazing, the red rising by Pierce Brownis superior by every measure. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, just read them. Not only that, each book is 10 times better than the previous, have no clue how he does it, it’s simply mind blowing .
I read red rising, great book, but didn’t blow me away like I was expecting it to. I hear the further and further into the series you get, the better it becomes. :)
@@NICKREADSFANTASY oh, no doubt! Pierce Brown “grew up” along with his books, but even the first one blew me away. Could also be because I stumbled across it while browsing Amazon looking for something to read on vacation….they might still remember me walking around the hotel looking for WiFi at 3 am! I HAD TO get the next book. But I reread them almost every year, they never lost “IT” for me ❤️
@@NICKREADSFANTASY I’m going to admit to something awful…haven’t read either. Dune I felt would be too “dated”, but the book of the new sun now I want to try 🤩 if I do, I’ll report back!
@@YaFeya13 Dune is more relevant than ever!!! I was actually going to make a video about it. As far as book of the new sun, it’s not for everyone. If you loose interest early on, I suggest listening to Alzabo soup podcast and following along with their discussions.
It is a more controversial opinion for sure, but hopefully my full review will do a better job of why I feel this way. I’ve already recorded it so it should be posted sometime next week. I would love to hear what you think of it! Have you read the rest of Sun Eater? How did you feel about the rest?
I was torn on whether or not I was going to say “as good, if not better than Dune” but am still undecided. Glad to hear someone on my same bandwagon though! Most people I hear don’t like it as much

Glad to be back! I’ll be uploading with less often while doing my away rotations, but will be consistently 2-4 times a month.

Happy to see you back, Nick! Honestly, I haven't been reading much. I'm in such a rut that I can't really get through anything.

Empire is silence is superficially similar to dune but it’s really nothing like it. I feel like you’re being too harsh by saying it’s fanfiction.
