The "Step & Repeat" Trick for Creating 3D Text in Photoshop

  • In today's Photoshop tutorial we're going to create a colourful 3D type effect, which is ideal for making fun lettering pieces or quote designs. We'll start by creating a custom type layout using a ready-made font as a base, then I'll show you the clever Photoshop "Step and Repeat" trick that produces the cool faux 3D appearance.
    Vibrant colours are used throughout to really brighten up the artwork, which are enhanced with shading effects using Photoshop Layer Styles. The whole design is then finished off with subtle texturing with grainy details.
    Stick around until the end to get your hands on my Subtle Grunge Photoshop brushes so you have all the tools you need to create the effect yourself.

    That's a great effect, I like it.
    It bothers me that the drop shadow used to add colour variation to the purple extrusion is also affecting the orange background. You could expand that layer style to it's own layer, and then create a clipping mask to restrict it to the purple below, or create a layer mask to manually restrict it to the shape of the extruded parts.
    Looking at the final image, it looks like you've added some drop shadow to the extrusion layer that you didn't show in the tutorial, which sort of hides the impact.

    When I save this the repeated layers turn into an oversaturated block of colour. Any tips?

    With sharper fonts, it seems to create jagged pixel style edges. any solutions?

    First of all, nice job and technique!
    Well, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but my shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Shift+T isn't working. Everytime I press it, it just repeat the movement but don't duplicate.
    Someone have some tips for me?
    Thanks in advance!

      I was confused too at first and got really annoyed but figured it out, what I did was I pressed ctrl alt t, then moved it to the direction i want the 3d effect to go by pressing the arrow keys once. And then i pressed enter, then proceeded to pressing ctrl alt shift+t until i got what i wanted. hope this helps :)

    I get lost with the step where you copy the 100 layers! I have a windows computer and I just can’t figure it out

    • @nagendraghantasala7078
      @nagendraghantasala7078 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I too faced that issue, but I didn't stop there. I did find an alternate way to repeat the steps. But you need to do it manually. Click CTRL+J, CTRL+T, LEFT arrow, TOP arrow on the current layer. CTRL+T creates the layer copy, CTRL+T awakes the transform property, LEFT arrow and TOP arrows moves the layers. All commands one after the other which makes the newly created layer move accordingly. Based on the thickness formed you can stop the process/repetition.

      @@nagendraghantasala7078 I tried Ctrl+Alt+T > Left arrow key > Up arrow key > Enter > Ctrl+Shift+Alt+T > repeat the "Ctrl+Shift+Alt+T" (Without Alt it moved it but didn't copy the layer)
