Even though illustrator has updated and a few places are different- I LOVE watching these videos! I am currently in school for applied graphic communications and honestly I just spend my whole weekends when I don't have school work- watching these videos and applying them to my projects.

Hello! Love your tutorials! I was wondering if you have/had made a tutorial using a background image as a background while creating the 3D text on it? similar to this model of text? VERY new and self teaching with Adobe products. Appreciate your work!
Thanks so much Jacqueline! I likely wouldn’t do this in Illustrator with a photo, but instead use something like Adobe Dimension. Here’s a tutorial that is hopefully helpful 😊

Hey Dansky, I love your work and your tutorials! quick question though, after I do the first Object > Blend, and you say to select the text layer that's behind, it selects both and won't allow me to select the layer behind. Any help would be great, thank you!

I figured this out - if you're interested for future ref' - You just need to double click instead, and you can select them individually in isolation mode 🤷♀

Hi, was wondering how you dont get the 3D effect when you copy and paste to create the reflection? Every time i try, the reflection also copies😅
this was a great tutorial. Question: when I add the overlay the colored rectangle at the end, once I choose COLOR in Transparency it disappears as long as it is over the gradated background rectangle. Yours changed color? what am I missing? I watched your tutorial 4 times and can't figure it out why my art doesn't change to a gradated color. Thanks, Judith

I was good all the way up until you blended two text words. I am working off of my iPad and it’s not allowing me to blend the text. It gives me a message that it can only blend with paths and group of paths. Any suggestions?

Hello. First time using illustrator here and I'm doing it for school. What do you press after the free distort to make the distorted element go behind the text before the blur because mine stays in the front
At the top of the screen, go to OBJECT > ARRANGE > SEND TO FRONT / SEND TO BACK 🙂

i just asked the same question. Did you get an answer? When I choose COLOR in transparency menu the overlay disappears?
I figured it out, you have to be working in RGB, not CMYK
Changing the blending mode to color at the end just makes the rectangle transparent. Not sure what I did wrong.
Would have been nice to see the layer panel open, just a little easier for me to keep up with where you were. I even slowed the video down and had a hard time keeping up. Just a noob here.

Right click it, select Arrange, select Bring to Front 👍

I don't have blend option under object. I tried looking in menus under edit but I don't see it available. How do I get it?
Which version of Illustrator are you using Melinda?
if you have cc or something like that, the blend tool is in the tools on the left - it's the icon with a solid square and two circles going from light to dark colors.
the way i did it: keep the layers deselected (it can still be as texts and not outlined), select the tool then select the layers from the back to the front ones. once they're all selected, double click on the tool icon and change the settings just like on this video!
This was more about gradients and reflections than it was about 3D.
I can me this in Inkscape.

I can never get the gradiant tool to do what you people get on your screens...you all make it look as though the colours just pop in and they don't, I only get the sliders with no colours....and nothing happems when I slide them and then they wont go away....what am I doing wrong?
Go to File --> Color Mode --> select "RGB". This spectrum has more vibrant colours and helps gradients look (and blend) much better. Regarding the gradient slider, just make sure you have the "Fill" selected at the bottom of the toolbar on the left, rather than the "Stroke", then try clicking the gradient slider to add a gradient, or click the default black/white gradient listed in the swatches panel.
@@ForeverDansky its already RGB and the fill is selected as you say. I have followed exactly as you say but I cant get a gradiant in the rectangle....I can get the gradiant colour to change in the gradiant box but nothing happens in the document, it just stays white....

@@ForeverDansky thanks so much for your quick response! I am stuck at 1:12, it is not allowing me to grab the rectangle tool, and it actually won’t let me do anything else. The screen sort of looks frozen so I closed everything out to start over and the same thing happened again. 🤷🏼♀️

Choppy as in low quality? Have you tried increasing the size a lot more?

Choppy in the sense that you can see the edges in-between each frame. So there's a visible jagged edge. Yours looked really smooth compared to mine. Mine looks like there's no anti-aliasing.
I'll try increasing the size but it's about as big as I can allow it to be for what I need. Maybe I'll try double the size then shrinking it after.

Hey Lance, is the big rectangle on top of the other layers? Does it have a colour applied to the fill (not the stroke), and is the blending mode set correctly? 🙏
I had the same issue, you have to change illustrator to rgb not cmyk
