I can answer Clefable! So Clefable is kind of its own thing. It doesn't have any recovery like Chansey, and it doesn't have the bulk or Speed of Snorlax and Tauros either. What it does have, though are all those moves. It's basically a paralysis supporter that you can't block easily. Thunder Wave / Body Slam / Hyper Beam / Blizzard is the usual set I've seen, but some crackheads use Mega Kick for KO ranges or Psychic to more effectively contest Gengar. It was way better pre-paraslam as the T1 Thunder Wave leads of yore would get mauled by it. These days it can still do that, but it's sort of a mid-game annoyance if that makes sense. Don't try Sing though!
Thanks so much for this! I felt bad giving Machamp and Raticate the attention I did and just not caring about Clef but it really is such an obscure mon, so I really appreciate the insight!
“Don’t try Sing though” indeed. I never really cared for sleep before, I’ve only ever played Pokémon single player and just kinda ignored most support moves. Just from watching you and Yellow, though, more specifically hearing that Sing has an accuracy of f$&@ing 55… Yeah, never doing that. Ever. Not just on Clefable.
Clefable is one of the only Gen 1 Pokémon who actually got significantly *better* over the generations, its Gen 1 move syndrome helped it a lot going into later generations where it also had options like Knock Off, Softboiled… and a whole other typing
Gen 8 clefable, machamp, and Tauros walk into a bar. Clef survives the super effective hit and pp stalls the bar with toxapex. Machamp cross chops it into 4 peices and waltzes into ru and starts mugging registeel. Touros takes damage from the stealth rocks the bar set up and gets OHKOd by talonflame immediately. Ps, you guys should crossover, maybe have played von karma do a fighting game section for the memes.
Big Yellow: Don't get worked up about E rank, I know it sucks to not see your favorite Pokemon ranked but don't get too heated about it. Me: MACHAMP E RANK BABY WE'RE MOVING ON UP, WE'RE CONSIDERED VIABLE, THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE
Welp just like charizard if you want to see the truly epic version of machamp go to another generation of competitive pokemon or idk play lower tiers being viable in OU means shit if you are a the mewtwo of a lower tier but being honest i still have no idea why machamp is in ZU/6U in RBY because it makes no sense that 2~3 tiers metagame is extremely unfriendly to it
@@matteofaccin6636 never underestimate us modern tine nerds! we’ll sweep you with tapu koko and xurkitree in an instant if you even dare press us!!!1!!1!
Seeing this reminded me of how unfortunate Bug types were in Gen 1, not to mention Pinsir's movepool being pretty terrible. A lot of Pokemon in Gen 1 had shallow movesets, but Pinsir being completely walled by Gengar, not knowing Earthquake and Rock Slide, moves it got later on, made it outclassed.
Pinsir is kinda like Aerodactyl in that if they just had a couple of more moves they could've been huge threats. If Aero had Rock Slide, it'd be a very decent pick in OU
It's honestly not actually Outclassed let's be entirely real here, the other Swordsdance users don't have the best time against Gengar either, and besides if there's still an opposing healthy Gengar around by the time you're trying to sweep with Swordsdance- you're doing it wrong.
What? He specifically called out one of Pinsir's problems being that it had _too many moves_ that you want to put on it but only 4 move slots. I get that we all want good coverage on pokemon but that doesn't seem like the issue.
20:48 - omg, that's actually hecking adorable! I can just imagine Lapras being a nurturing, patient saint waiting for Slowbro's responses to things, and Slowbro just periodically turning to Lapras to be all "ILU :B". I wish them all the best; what a heartwarming couple ;-; Also, judging from other comments, it sounds like you were under the weather -- possibly with something serious?? I'm so sorry to have been oblivious to your situation, but glad you appear to have recovered nonetheless! :
20:49 The thing that makes this even funnier is that, in later generations, they're both in the exact same 2 Egg Groups (Monster & Water 1). It's like they were made for each other!
Victreebel falling made me sad, but I do understand it. Besides, now it gets way more of a chance to shine in UU, which is already a really fun format in its own right, so hey
My main concern is that this will lead to venusaur getting outclassed again and falling to nu, again. Which means the already stablished NU will have to reacomodate itself again for the threat that venusaur will pose, which means the pokemon that were good there because of venusaur's absense will also vanish, and in turn, NU will lose the identity that took so much effort to shape.
@@yourdagan you missed the entire point of my comment. You do know that the viability rankings were different when venusaur was in NU right? When venusaur ascended to UU, a lot of pokemon became better and worse as a result, others were given a chance to fill its place and perform on it's own way. The already shaped NU mategame in which Venusaur had its place suddenly became a different one once it left because of the new pokemon that now had a chance to shine. Granted, raichu was also there among others, so it won't be a complete regression, but even then, a lot of the effort that went into restructuring the metagame will be undone. Heck, maybe even poliwrath will get himself unbanned now that one of its checks has returned.
@@wertyxq3468 Because my point of concern and disagreement is on the "loss of identity", which I think is silly for the reason of the tier having no shortage of checks to it which are often underrated already. Also, it probably won't be outclassed since, if I'm not mistaken, they decided to ban Wrap in UU---so there goes Victreebel's main/only advantage.
@@yourdagan the point on the "loss of identity" was about NU losing the new identity it made after losing the one it already had at the begining, which was functional to say the least. The over abundance of firetypes in Nu will keep it in check of course, but venusaur will still be the superior choice for the roles it can fulfill, which in turn results in tiering changes that had already happened before. It can check blastoise and nidoking somewhat better than say, exeggute. And yes, I believe you are mistaken. They did not decide to ban wrap on UU, rather the combination of agility plus wrap. This was to make the annoyance of endless trapping from dragonite more manageble, while keeping UU's identity of skillfull wrap play. In my knowledge, vctreebel didn't use wrap to cheese and harass the oppenent, rather it used it instead as a method of pivoting and getting him and its teammates in a safe spot. This was what made it good in UU, and OU to an extent, and it was also what made venusaur obsolete, as the only thing it had over vic was more phys def and speed, the former not being as important considering it can already get himself in a good position thanks to wrap, and the latter not being exactly relevant as it not outspeed anything that victribeel couldn't while making it matter. So the probabilities of venu dropping again are very high, and so are the changes it will bring along with him.
You think Lapras is just ferrying Slowbro around lazily through the waters of UUBL while Slowbro’s like…wondering how big a cloud is? I’d like to think so.
If it had Thunder Wave like it did in past gens, and coupling paralysis with occasional flinch chances, it would be annoying to deal with. I'm sure there are better paraflinchers in gen 1, if not better suited to being sweepers as a whole.
This has barely anything to do with the video but the nicknames are KILLING ME. Really, they're amazing. On a more serious note, glad to see you're doing better! I've started looking forward to your uploads.
@@LuisSilva-yc5fzI was just theorizing that the Fighting type was a late addition to RBY, I wonder if Karate Chop was added to the game early as a normal type move and by the time they got around to adding Fighting types they just forgot to change Karate Chop
I guarantee that you would love NINTENDO CUP 1997 probably even more then gen 1 OU. The very first format to ever exist where Rhydon runs Blizzard, Seaking is terrifying, and Double team enables countless other Pokémon to be viable, weather it's "PP stall Muk" or lv50 Electrode useing it's speed to threaten lv55 Starmie instead of Jolteon.
@@tabhou7988 Funny enough on the Showdown the current Spotlight right now is Nintendo cup 1997 so you can even play it for yourself. Here's a basic run down of all the differences: Blizzard has a 30% chance to freeze No evasion clause No Freeze clause There is still a sleep clause No OHKO move clause Every battle is a 3v3 You bring 6 pick 3 the total level of the 3 pokemon you pick can't exceed 155 which adds several new layers to team building Fly and Dig are allowed. Those are pretty much the important notes that I can remember off the top of my head.
A real pokemon battle is 6v6, level 100 singles. VGC isn't more skill-reliant, quite the opposite, it exists as it does to make games fast paced to force an e-sport out of it - fun to WATCH, not play. Smogon singles are the true skill-test. NC just works that way (155 cap) because of Stadium mechanics, you should ALWAYS have 6 Pokes and the ONLY time a level cap makes sense is for Little Cup. I hate how they try to make Pokemon an e-sport, it's a total square peg... 6v6, level 100, singles will always be the real way to play.
@alyssarichardson2544 You have no idea what you're talking about. NC97 Literally was the first and only time a pokemon tournament actually was a televised e-sport. Gen 1 in philosophy was very different from modern pokemon games. It was built and intended to be this way in gen 1 context. I can tell you've just never played.
I never thought I’d see the day where the top 6 had some sort of shift within the viability rankings. This is huge, and makes me love Starmie so much more.
Question from someone who isn’t too knowledgeable about RBY OU outside of the content I’ve seen on this channel. So Tauros, Chansey, and Snorlax are basically required on every competitively viable team, but what’s the mentality for picking the other three? I’m assuming you want a slot for pivoting through normal moves so a rhydon or gengar. You want a sleeper or just run sing on Chansey. And then there’s your choice of psychic type or multiple of such. Maybe you can use a tauros 2.0 like Persian. Are there team archetypes in RBY and is there an optimal final three?
There's definitely not an optimal final three, as an opposing team can potentially always have a team that has a favorable matchup against yours, so a lot of it is kind of luck dependent. That's just how it is in Pokémon in general, not just in RBY. Which Pokémon you run in those last 3 slots also depends on what moves you run on the Big Three. For example, if you use Sing Chansey, you won't need another sleeper (although you could always bring one anyway). Despite the relatively small pool of viable Pokémon in RBY, there's a lot of combinations to try out (especially when you consider the moves can vary as well), so I'd say just experiment and see what works for you.
As someone who plays the tier, the Big Three of OU have so many great matchups that you don't really need to run additional mons to cover matchups that the Big Three are weak to, so you can usually run almost any mon as long as it fulfills the specific niche your team requires. Generally though, you at least need a mon to fill the lead slot. Chansey technically works as a lead, since it has great matchups against leads that spread paralysis, but really doesn't like sleep leads like Jynx or Gengar. You don't really want to run Chansey as a lead. Besides the lead slot, you can customize the remaining slots to your heart's content. Is your team particularly weak to Electric types? Slap a Rhydon on your team and now you stonewall basically every Electric type. Want a fast Psychic type that can spread paralysis AND has great coverage? Use Starmie! Like partial-trapping and also want to switch in on a Tauros? Use Cloyster.
Tauros lax and chansey basically required Usually also a lead (usually along the lines of zam, jynx, starmie, gengar, or the occasional antimeta arcanine) tho some ppl just lead chansey which is great against para leads but bad against sleep leads Something else decently bulky like Exeggutor (imo 4th best mon) rhydon/golem, cloyster, slowbro, lapras, or occasionally articuno Last mon can either be another one from either of those lists, or either another sweeper like Persian, Victreebell (not very popular but usable) and dragonite, or something with more utility like jolteon, zapdos, hypno (rarely) moltres whichever fills whatever weaknesses your team still has best Realistically, tho in my experience in high ladder the most common are some combination of starmie, zam, exeggutor, jynx rhydon and cloyster
Technically speaking running only chansey and Tauros on para spam teams is a thing though that’s somewhat gimmicky but the idea is that you use para spreaders and mons that benifit from the speed support like a mon with a binding move or the swords dance users. Tauros still works well in such a context as it is fast enough to outspeed almost everything paralyzed but does gain a few notable things it outspeeds where as snorlax doesn’t have twave like chansey nor really benefit from the speed support like Tauros. But that’s really gimmicky and you’d probably be better off just using snorlax
@Me I’m not lol I’m just saying that it’s sad to see that it’s currently unranked Doesn’t mean it’s unusable, just that it’s how the community perceives it
I'd like to say thanks for delving so deep into this content and making it more accessible, Yellow. Both you and Plague von Karma have become some of my favorite youtubers, competitive Pokémon has so much stuff to study and discuss, it's amazing how much you guys go in depth and are just so entertaining while doing so. Cheers!
And even in the following generations, Pinsir is always passed over to Heracross, Heracross has reliable stab and Pinsir has X Scissor, And that's about it
I’m glad to see Starmie as a staple part of Gen 1’s meta, it’s one of my favorite Kanto Pokémon My all-time favorite Kanto Pokémon is Porygon though, and seeing it randomly in C rank on VR is hilarious because no one would expect it to even have a niche in OU with how low most of its stats are
Funnily enough, Porygon has a really good matchup against Snorlax. Snorlax has no way of breaking through Porygon even with a crit unless it uses Self Destruct, and Snorlax REALLY doesn't want to waste a Self Destruct on such a low value Pokemon. Having a Porygon means that you don't need to have your own Snorlax be able to deal with opposing Snorlax, so you're able to run more offensively oriented Snorlax sets without worry of being unable to deal with the opponent's Snorlax.
Porygon is clutch. If other Pokemon on your team can take down Chansey, there's not much that can beat Porygon. Toxic Recover set with Tbolt and Reflect usually does it
@@paradise808 Snorlax is too slow to catch up. And If you have or 5 exploders on your team you can potentially take down 2 or 3 of your opponents mons and start exploding and surfing and then porygon and maybe taur or Ala
18:29 this is actually how I describe ibuki oro and Ryu in third strike. Like akuma and Yang wipe the floor with these characters and are pretty significantly better because of what they have, and the fact they’re lacking big weaknesses like the mid tiers, but they would kick the shit out of everyone else if the characters above them were banned and these three were the best characters you could play as.
It’s so cute that tauros is the absolute best gen 1 Pokémon he may never reach that spot again but he had his time. Vileplume is one of my favorite Pokemon and I was glad to see it was at least uu if I’m not mistaken in rby ^^
@@BigYellowSilly ahh damn that’s a shame poor vileplume in later generations especially it’s so sad how him and bellosom are basically identical except bellosom gets drain punch with obviously wouldn’t help him too much but that’s basically all setting their moveset apart in some generations blind bellosom favoritism shame
@@BigYellowSilly RBY PU Vileplume is a bit like 7U Ivysaur, in that it is mainly viable / good due to being the most reliable sleep / “double powder” user in the tier, while otherwise being pretty lackluster. The only other options for a sleep users are Gastly, Poliwag, and Drowzee, which all have to use cringe Hypnosis.
Your videos about rby have gotten me interested in gen 1 OU, and going from gen 8 BSS to gen 1 OU was a very, very drastic change, but overall I have enjoyed the tier for the most part. Super cool to see the resources still getting updated after all this time
ik its kinda unrealted but you should check out pokemon type wild, it's basically street fighter and pokemon combined together, i think you'll find it interesting. Sadly i think its discontinued
gen 1 meta is actually sick. These vids helped me get off my butt and start playing it more on Showdown, and its cool to see people trying new strats after all these years. Even Porygon is seeing use now.
Good to see you’re back in good health. Don’t feel pressured to compensate for the sick time by overworking yourself to put stuff out, just go at a normal pace.
It’s sad that Pinsir got unranked, but while I can see the whole “having more desirable moves than slots” thing can be a problem, I think it’s kind of interesting. Like, I think it’s more interesting for every Pinsir you fight in OU to use different combinations of those moves potentially. I get that movesets are as subject to meta as Pokémon themselves, but I just think that issue on Pinsir could make it more able to mix things up. If anything, as much as I also get the “only one of a given species per team” rule, I think it would be interesting if you could run multiple Pinsirs, each with completely different moves on that list. Would be a fun mix up when your two copies do completely different things. I know AI trainers in the campaign do this (specifically some Elite Four members and Lance in HGSS).
I don't know. I feel not having Species Clause would tank what little usage Pinsir currently gets. Like, a lot of Pokemon fulfill similar roles to each other. Which means the best of that role will get first pick and the others may only get picked if you need more of that role. Big Yellow points this out. That the only reason people used DoDuo or Raticate was because you needed a backup Tauros you could use while preserving your main Tauros. If you could just use multiple Tauros, then you'd never ever need to use Duoduo or Raticate. The only Pokemon that would benefit from not having Species Clause, would be Pokemon that are either so powerful that it's hard to take down even one of them without requiring multiple counters and checks, or have so many different sets that just figuring out which one you're up against is half the battle and by the time you've figured it out, your counter is already been taken down. Pinsir doesn't really have any of those. It's not some serious threat where you'd want to bring multiple along. And its movesets aren't really amazing. Like, you know every Pinsir is going to have at least Swords Dance and Body Slam for sure. It can't function without it. That just leaves Hyper Beam, Slash, Submission and Seismic Toss to fill amongst 2 remaining move slots. So even if you bring multiple Pinsirs, it's not going to take long for the opponent to figure out what its remaining 2 moves are and how to counter them. Then what? If you switch to your other Pinsir, the opponent already knows why you're switching to this Pinsir and how they can capitalize.
Pinsir will always have a special place in my Heart because of the Poké Cup in Pokémon Stadium 1 I remember finishing off the final trainer with a critical slashes from my Pinsir.
RBY isn't my cup of tea to play per se (my preferred tier is ADV OU or just gen 8 randbats) but I do still love these vids!! Glad to see you've recuperated.
I was watching Notorious B.U.G. when you posted this. Seeing Pinsir gone had me worried, but hearing how it's relevance was impacted helped me understand why. With my binge solo playthroughs of Red recently... anything having to do with Gen 1 makes me happy nowadays.
I’m usually so far removed from reality when I build for OU in rby things are a lot simpler, at least when it comes to the species list, but the later I go in gen the more offbeat weirdos end up on the big stage my gen 5-7 teams often revolve around facilitating RU pokemon that happen to match up well into the tier’s staples here’s to more OU pinsir, in spite of the viability rankings!
Absolute chad timing, I'm just about to head out the door and here's some great content to listen to while I'm driving and in the store shopping. Glad you're doing better!
Glad you are better man. I am glad to be learning more about Pokemon over the years. I can't wait for you to cover multiple generations again. Can I ask what are your hopes for Gen 9?
@@BigYellowSilly that's good. I'm surprised that Starmie surpassed Executor. You never bring up Executor of the big 4 when it comes to Gen 1 like FSG does, but now I'm beginning to see why.
It is so sad when your favorite drops out the ranking :( I remember when it happed to my homeboy Rotom-Wash in OU, even after Dexit deleted 2/3ds of its competitiors
Actually this vid is perfect timing! I've been theorymonning since yesterday in the ruins of alpha in showdown what if post rby evos were in rby? Like I.e rhyperior, Billsey and the like. I think it would be a neat concept porygon would finally have utility outside of stone walling snorlax with its enormous special stat and decent speed and its improved added bulk thanks to 85 hp really helps. Now for scizor and steelix I think we include their prevos typing for simplicity and don't include umbreon/espeon or any regional variats/evos. I'd like to see how these evos change rby maybe tauros will no longer be king maybe it still will who knows
Poliwrath 🤝 Pinsir *Being two badass mons with the worst types in the game but still putting up a fight because fuck tier lists.* Also good job for overcoming the virus! Also (also): 12:15 "Serve zero purpose... Outside of trying to be funny (and failing)" Relatable. Also times 3: Dumb question, but if a Pokemon is below OU can you still use it anyways? Yeah, some cool mons may not be ranked in OU anymore, but they're still OU in our hearts and we can express that through their usage.
I dig your nails homie. I have a color almost exactly like that with a bit of glitter in it, but I almost never really paint them since I'm lifting boxes all day at work so they get chipped after half a day
Im kinda sad and happy that Victreebel dropped , sad because now Venusaur will almost certainly fade away. Though I am glad that VenuCuno UU teams will have a very good upgrade with another wrapper in Vic, alongside the obligatory Tentacruel, and that's my favorite UU team. Another video idea could be theorymonning about how future gen OU staples would fare in the older gens ,like how Garchomp would fare in the icy climates of Gen 1 with the Blizzard spam.
Garchomp in Gen One OU: "I'm here to kick ass and take names... and I'm all out of-" (Starts getting Blizzard-spammed) AGGGGGH FUCK STOP THIS RIGHT NOW IT'S NOT FUNNY I SWEAR TO GOD YGUROIGROEOHYGR$UOGYIR$UOG-"
I think the simplicity of Pokémon by design is one of the big reasons I just can't get into playing competitive, things like the 4 move slots etc. really just make me think "I could just be playing something way less limiting" and while limits are what make things interesting to an extent as otherwise the meta would just be like six of the same Pokémon it's just a bit too limited to allow for as much expression as I'd want.
Good to see you’re doin better, love the content you put out and it was an instant click when I saw you upload :) Also I have no idea where else to say this but your nails look fuckin amazing

Your vids have to be some of the most well constructed and interesting in the space atm, I can't believe you don't have more subs can't wait for you to blow up !!!
first off, nice to see you recovered from The Virus second, as someone who's considering getting into RBY OU partly because of you (and partly because of Plague von Karma who keeps showing up on my reccomends), do you know any good guides for new players just getting into the tier and/or would you be interested in making one in the future? I know that your stuff is mostly based around lesser known things in certain games, but an in-depth look into RBY overall could be nice to have, given that (I assume) a lot of people could be gaining interest in the generation because of you in particular
also as someone who started liking raticate due to a crystal clear challenge where I had to do the first four gyms with a team initially composed of Rattata and Magikarp, seeing it mentioned in any way in a competitive context is a big W
If you ever want to learn the tier, you can always look for sample teams on the Smogon forums. The Smogon RBY dex is a great place to learn each mon's gameplan and movesets.
God can you imagine how different our timeline would be if x scissor existed in gen 1. Literally just bug type strength but it would have made such an insane difference
god i wish somone would make teambuilding guides for pokemon cause the game sounds sick but its fucking brutal to learn the metagame enough to build around it
It really resonates with me for some reason that you named rydon Jerry and I've been naming my obnoxious heatran and ferrothorns Jerry for several months now
Very interesting. Maybe "I can't believe they're not Doubles OU"? (Zamazenta Hero, Giratina, Necrozma Dawn Wings). 3 Doubles Ubers mons that on the surface don't seem too overpowered for Doubles OU? (2 of them are defense mons when stall doesn't work in DOU and the other seems lame)
I left a comment several months back about being mostly a VGC guy, but you and freezai have gotten me really into singles, particularly old formats and niche formats. I rly love them now, but the issue comes with finding ppl to play some of them lol. No idea where to find ppl to play gen 3 uu and such lmao
Back from my errands now, was a good video (well, audio, in this case) - now that I see your nails on the big screen, reminds me I need to paint mine, so thanks for that. Always the chad nails. Wish I could deal with any color other than black and orange!
Gems being banned out of Gen 5 makes me sad. I understand the why of Dragon Gem Boosted Draco Meteor being a problem, but I legit liked the gems as a bit of synergy witht he likes of Acrobatics and Unburden.
I can understand why they did it; npt only are gems really strong in their own right, even in the fast-and-furious Gen 5 metagame, but they also make those specific pokemon that use the synergy one-trick ponies, making them too strong with little counterplay unless you use one Trick. Too easy to slap on a team, to versatile to reliably predict, and too strong to safely counter.
The main problem I have with the ban of Gems is that ...... first I would have looked at Keldeo before Gems as Keldeo is by far the worst offender in the metagame and second ...... Reuniclus do be looking good, and I don't like it when Reuniclus do be looking good. If you also ban Reuniclus/Magic Guard then maybe we can talk, but I think it's going to become more and more centralizing again
The part that I can't stand is that gen 5 is the only generation where most of the gems even exist making them an integral part of gen 5. Its like if Amnesia was given to more Pokemon in gen 1. The move is like never used in any other game so if it ever got banned it would be a bloody tragedy
Ah yes, the flinch on Low Kick. Look, not gonna talk about Low Kick or Machamp here, just flinching. I was never interested in competitive before discovering you, but I still liked flinch, always a nice effect to get (or terrible if it happens to you). But damn, in my current XD run, once I got a Pupitar with Rock Slide, flinching became as much of a staple in my run as freaking Sandstorm is in Gen 3 OU. On both sides: the enemy flinches me (particularly with Fake Out) as much as I flinch them. My point: I always knew flinch was good, but this run has shown me just how powerful it truly is
I don't know if this would fit with the types of videos you do but I think it would be cool to look at the TM's of Gen 1 and some oddities of Pokémon learning moves you wouldn't expect or moves that are TM's that barely any Pokémon learn. 2 examples I'd bring up are the strange set of Pokémon that learn Teleport by TM and how Softboiled is a TM but it is only learned by Chansey and that one weird cat thing nobody's supposed to really have, Mew.
I really love Dodrio! Hurts to see it forgotten! But yeah, it really needed more coverage... If it got jump kick like it does in Let's Go, Dodrio would be the best fighting type in RBY! XD
Lol. That new ranking is probably the highest poor Raticate has ever been in anything. Good for it I guess. Also good to see that you seem to be feeling better already. Honestly I wasn't expecting another non-compilation video from you until next month, which would have fine as long as you were recovering well. Anyway, let us "pour one out", as they say, for Pinsir's fall though. At least it got a Mega five entire gens later, but it still does feel a bit insulting to be the worst Swords Dance user in Gen 1 even just by implication. (Especially since it's not like any of those mons save Venusaur amounted to anything otherwise.)
@@BigYellowSilly A check of Smogon shows you to be correct. Gens 3 and 4 seem to have been the kindest to Raticate before it fell down the cliff of irrelevance even more due to a power creep even Guts couldn't help stop. Still, at least it had those gens I suppose...unlike the even more scuffed Raticate-Alola. That poor Alolan thing started even more atrocious and can now only look at Obstagoon & weep in envy given it didn't even get more than one Gen before its unique typing was given to a mon infinitely better (even if one just really likes rodents). Hell, I keep forgetting that Game Freak went insane and got rid of Guts on Raticate-alola for the generally crappy ability is Hustle, though even if it had kept Guts, Obstagoon would still just be a better version of it in every way short of lacking priority. How pitiful.
Pinsir lack of coverage moves is sad. Later gens gave it Rock Slide and Earthquake to balance its moveset out. Had Pinsir carried those moves it would certainly be much more viable.
Video idea: A video taking a look at each generation, and asking the question: What is the most defining move of this generation? In other words, What move would cause the biggest change in the tierlists if completely removed from the game. Or if looking t every gen would be too big a project, you could look at a couple moves from Gen 1.
As a person who got into competitive Pokémon because of your videos (mainly gen 1 and gen 4), I'd really want to see Gen 3 and 5 stuff. I'm really interested in them, but I don't know where to start. Anything you'd recommend?
BKC has some great Gen 3 vids but starting out is pretty difficult, I would look for sample teams on smogon forums and see if they have explanations so you kinda know what to do with them
Fun fact I remembered about Gen 1 and the number 81, there's 81 evolution lines in Gen 1 (if you count Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon as the same line).
You made me love Pinsir! I don't have the balls to use it in a competitive team, but I'm using one in an in-game team and I'm loving it. It's far more useful than people usually say it is.
So I just had a random thought. How much does the metagame between RBY OU and Stadium OU differ since Stadium fixed some relevant bugs such as hyper beam cooldown and focus energy properly boosting crit.
@@BigYellowSilly Thank you! it's used in the tutorial stage for the Doom Mod, "Treasure Tech" and it fits the vibe of Treasure Tech really nicely, given that it's kinda this zany Wario Land take on Doom where you play as this bukly money obsessed dopplegangar of the Doom Guy who shoulder checks and picks up and tosses Imps at each other and has a much zanier arsenal.

@@Skeloperch Earthquake too against Rhydon and Golem; won't OHKO them but will 2HKO them with a crit.

@@wertyxq3468 You are overexaggerating hard. NU is the Fire den.
I love seeing Raticate ranked, its stats are so bad but it still can sort of do something. kinda like porygon lol
If it had Thunder Wave like it did in past gens, and coupling paralysis with occasional flinch chances, it would be annoying to deal with. I'm sure there are better paraflinchers in gen 1, if not better suited to being sweepers as a whole.

Can you elaborate more on the differences it sounds cool
@@tabhou7988 Funny enough on the Showdown the current Spotlight right now is Nintendo cup 1997 so you can even play it for yourself. Here's a basic run down of all the differences:
Blizzard has a 30% chance to freeze
No evasion clause
No Freeze clause
There is still a sleep clause
No OHKO move clause
Every battle is a 3v3
You bring 6 pick 3 the total level of the 3 pokemon you pick can't exceed 155 which adds several new layers to team building
Fly and Dig are allowed.
Those are pretty much the important notes that I can remember off the top of my head.
@@terraSpark902 So, Pokemon Stadium mode?
As someone else that has no idea, I think you just summed it all up
There's definitely not an optimal final three, as an opposing team can potentially always have a team that has a favorable matchup against yours, so a lot of it is kind of luck dependent.
Tauros lax and chansey basically required
Usually also a lead (usually along the lines of zam, jynx, starmie, gengar, or the occasional antimeta arcanine) tho some ppl just lead chansey which is great against para leads but bad against sleep leads
Something else decently bulky like Exeggutor (imo 4th best mon) rhydon/golem, cloyster, slowbro, lapras, or occasionally articuno
Last mon can either be another one from either of those lists, or either another sweeper like Persian, Victreebell (not very popular but usable) and dragonite, or something with more utility like jolteon, zapdos, hypno (rarely) moltres whichever fills whatever weaknesses your team still has best
Realistically, tho in my experience in high ladder the most common are some combination of starmie, zam, exeggutor, jynx rhydon and cloyster
Glad to see that you’re feeling better Yellow ❤️

Good to see you are getting better, Yellow!
That's because Pinsir, like Scyther learn no Bug moves in gen 1. Plus Pinsir doesn't get Earthquake til gen 3
And even in the following generations, Pinsir is always passed over to Heracross, Heracross has reliable stab and Pinsir has X Scissor, And that's about it
I’m glad to see Starmie as a staple part of Gen 1’s meta, it’s one of my favorite Kanto Pokémon
My all-time favorite Kanto Pokémon is Porygon though, and seeing it randomly in C rank on VR is hilarious because no one would expect it to even have a niche in OU with how low most of its stats are
Funnily enough, Porygon has a really good matchup against Snorlax.

Good to see you’re back in good health. Don’t feel pressured to compensate for the sick time by overworking yourself to put stuff out, just go at a normal pace.
Gen 1 meta is always so fascinating. Also props for using the Bomber Man Heroes OST. Love that soundtrack.
Having more desirable moves than slots is better than the problem a lot of gen 1 pokemon have where they have no moves at all.
Pinsir will always have a special place in my Heart because of the Poké Cup in Pokémon Stadium 1 I remember finishing off the final trainer with a critical slashes from my Pinsir.

i dont think large yellow has talked about doubles outside of dark void
This random gen 1 meta info is what I regularly need lmao. Im glad you enjoy making these posts.
I left a comment several months back about being mostly a VGC guy, but you and freezai have gotten me really into singles, particularly old formats and niche formats. I rly love them now, but the issue comes with finding ppl to play some of them lol. No idea where to find ppl to play gen 3 uu and such lmao
Dude I love the nicknames all the pokemon you show on the video have, in fact is the main reason I subbed to your channel lol
Glad to see someone else agrees with me that Pinsir is best bug.
Nice video as always btw :)
I wish that Smogon had stuff like 7U, 8U, etc in every generation, so we can use all our favourites.
I’m impressed that raticate of all mons got voted to be ranked (even if it happens to be for E tier)
My point: I always knew flinch was good, but this run has shown me just how powerful it truly is
Also I didn't notice Slowbro but also lmfao This is so funny that he is his own tier. Absolutely spot on.
I don't know if this would fit with the types of videos you do but I think it would be cool to look at the TM's of Gen 1 and some oddities of Pokémon learning moves you wouldn't expect or moves that are TM's that barely any Pokémon learn.
2 examples I'd bring up are the strange set of Pokémon that learn Teleport by TM and how Softboiled is a TM but it is only learned by Chansey and that one weird cat thing nobody's supposed to really have, Mew.
is the music in this from that one pac-man game you can unlock in the arcade in pac-man world 2?
Big Yellow about every Pokemon I like: "bad, ugly, teacher bullied them in kindergarten"
I used to be on good terms with Slowbro but there's only so many times it can sweep my team while I don't crit it
I would love to hear your take on gen 1 pu.
What is that first song used in the video I know it but can't remember where it is from and it's driving me crazy lol
That "ShadowTimmy69" joke got me in tears bro
I really love Dodrio! Hurts to see it forgotten! But yeah, it really needed more coverage...
If it got jump kick like it does in Let's Go, Dodrio would be the best fighting type in RBY! XD
14:58 Naming your cloyster "clussy" is 4000% cursed
It's a form of physiological warfare
Gen 1 feels like the melee of pokemon
Completely fucking broken but has the most devoted player base and the weirdest tech and rankings
I love the larper voting for seaking
I'll never forget the Pinsir that I used for the lulz in Crystal. He had Strength and he put in so much work 😭
At the very least Raticate is tip tier in ADV NU if I remember correctly, but yeah the rat has had it rough lmao
Me playing Pixelmon (Minecraft mod): “Oh neat, gems. Those are going into a chest forever and never getting used.”
Big Yellow: “Gems are busted.”
damn he do be putting in hours at the Big Yellow arches
Pinsir lack of coverage moves is sad. Later gens gave it Rock Slide and Earthquake to balance its moveset out. Had Pinsir carried those moves it would certainly be much more viable.
I never would have thought to hear Pac Attack Ost in a Pokémon video
Nice video 👌👌
I have such brain rot, when the music at 17:26 started, I could only think about PM lmao
BKC has some great Gen 3 vids but starting out is pretty difficult, I would look for sample teams on smogon forums and see if they have explanations so you kinda know what to do with them
Just imagine if slowbro and only slowbro had access to belly drum in this gen, he'd be a monster
Keep up your thumbnail game, Mr. Yellow. The world needs it.
So I just had a random thought. How much does the metagame between RBY OU and Stadium OU differ since Stadium fixed some relevant bugs such as hyper beam cooldown and focus energy properly boosting crit.
"Serves zero purpose in OU outside of trying to be funny (and failing)" Got me chuckling.
also, seperate comment, but what's that song that plays after Rogue's theme when you start talking about Dodrio?
Novice/Beginner theme from the PS1 version of Pac-Attack, banger
@@BigYellowSilly Thank you! it's used in the tutorial stage for the Doom Mod, "Treasure Tech" and it fits the vibe of Treasure Tech really nicely, given that it's kinda this zany Wario Land take on Doom where you play as this bukly money obsessed dopplegangar of the Doom Guy who shoulder checks and picks up and tosses Imps at each other and has a much zanier arsenal.
Dodrio is my favorite bird, thank you for your kind words in these hard times.
Been binging these RBY videos! Be cool to see maybe an NU video or maybe some Gen II stuff! Keep it up!
I mean ngl if you can catch a win with mono poison on OU I think you do deserve a vote for being that much of a madlad.
