    lay bird on it's back, step on wings, pull legs... it's faster and less messy.

    We do the same thing up in northern Maine! It’s crazy how similar the terrain and forests are to parts of Alaska

    You did really good first time hunting grouse. And the meal you made had me drooling. It's after 9PM here in Oklahoma, and it's to late to eat something. Watching your video actually intrigued me to hunt with my.huband for bird.....you made the cleaning look easy.
    Thanks,

    I came from a family of hunters, grouse is one of the best game birds to eat if cooked correctly. My mom was a decent cook but she didn’t cook wild game well. The birds were breaded and very dry, we didn’t know about wrapping in bacon back then.
    Once I came home to a grouse hanging on my back porch, it was gutted, i knew it was from my dad. I’d never cooked one before but I knew I didn’t want it dry like mom’s, so I made a casserole of scalloped potatoes and set the bird on top with a lid. It fell off the bone and was delicious! My dad and brother are both gone now so I rarely get to eat gaming meat, I miss it.

    After watching your method for cleaning the birds, I like my method of just standing on the wings and pulling them apart with the legs; it may leave a little edible bits behind but much faster with about the same amount left to clean up.

    Outstanding. We have their cousin that I grew up hunting in MN - the Ruffed Grouse which by appearances might be a little smaller. Just as dumb. My father is a paraplegic so can hunt from his truck. They will literally sit on the road while he backed up and did turns until he was lined up to shoot out the window. I was his bird dog ;-) Yummy though! Always just ate them fried like chicken or grilled on foil packs to keep them moist. Good stuff!!

      Lyle Orr Ruffed grouse is Pennsylvania’s state bird. I don’t see many these days.

      Cyndi - that is sad. i know here they have a 10 year cycle with a 'bump' somewhere in the middle. On the big year though they seem to be everywhere. On the off years, they are very scarce here also.

    • @Ethan-uo4fr
      @Ethan-uo4fr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They aren't necessarily "dumb," they've just evolved a distinct way of avoiding predators via camouflage. Grouse try to stay still and only fly away once you're within a few feet (for the best chances of not being noticed by predators). But as a species that has only recently been introduced to humans, and in turn unknowing that they are vulnerable when you're shooting them with a gun from thirty feet away, maybe the stupid thing is the unfair advantage that hunters have over these birds.

    Way faster that plucking and you really don't lose much meat. I like the idea for the sauce to cut the game taste from the birds. Not hardly any fat on them. What is the limit for them up there? Happy hunting.

    We called those things fool hens in Wyoming and Montana. Maryland ruffed grouse aren’t quite so easy..... Have you ever removed the breast from the ribs, put a ball of butter in the middle and wrapped them with bacon? Broil them up and the butter melts out through the breast. It’s kind of my take on Pheasant Kiev.

  • @HabeasJ

    Most people here in Idaho don't hunt them without dogs. Pretty much everyone I talk to says theres no challenge when they just sit there and stare at you

    What section of the Richardson did you stake out? If you were hunting Unit 13 Caribou I presume around Paxson and the Denali HWY?

    • @outliersoverland
      @outliersoverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On that trip we had the unit 13 tag and hunted the eastern side of the Denali for 5 days and resorted to the pipeline stretch in the general area of Paxson Lake.

      I understand your concern about safety, but here in AK is way different than the Lower 48 we don’t shoot unless we verify what we shooting first, not a bad idea, but I have been hunting for over 20 years and never seeing anyone wearing orange, not a tule up here neither.

    A French Canadian showed me an easier way - Step on the wings breast side up then pull on the legs. The breast and legs come loose. Then reach in for the heart, gizzard and liver if you want them. We also use to save a wing or two for decorating the hunt camp. Wish I was back in the land of good hunting.

    I grew up on a farm and have killed and cleaned farm raised animals, which isn't much difference. We also hunted the land for deer, pheasant, rabbits, and squirrels. We had neighbors also who hunted bear and shared with us. I understand the circle of life.

    One hour after the kill, you put the bird on its back wings wide open with one foot on each wings. Then you pull the legs. The head will go thorugh the body and all that is inside. What will be left on the ground in the breast without feathers and the wings that you cut. Et voila!

    The grouse like the gravel because they eat it and put it inside their gizzards and use it to grind down their food Ps to clean a grouse you can just step on both wings grab the legs and pull the legs and there you have it perfect breasts

  • @howardgebb7600
    @howardgebb7600 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You are aware that fish and birds both breath oxygen. One through gills, the other through lungs. Right?

  • @jessicapierce3723
    @jessicapierce3723 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just step on the wings and pull up on their legs and the breast meat just comes right on out. Way easier and quicker to do it that way.
