Median rent $1300 oh my so scary. That;s dirt cheap!
Not anymore. We're up to 1800. Alaska isn't as outrageous as some make it out to be.
My husband was an airman in USAF in 1973. We had our daughter at Elmendorf. What I remember was being hungry and not having enough money to live on. It was a very rough place to live for young military families. Our very first apartment was Richardson Vista Apartments. I remember the biggest cockroaches I had ever seen lived in the basement of that apartment. We did not get out much to see the sights. We were living on a shoestring payday to payday. I had my 20th birthday there. I hope things are better now for young military families. We are coming back to Anchorage next summer with our daughter so she can see where she was born.
That's terrible! Those roaches must transfered in cause they freeze here now! I think the military has been taking much better care of folks now. Let me know when you all are in town and we'll meet up for coffee!
If you reside on Base, you will be fine. Best to stay on the military reserve.

I visited last year and have always wanted to move there. However it is way to far away from family in minnesota.

I was worried about the cost, but compared to NY it is pretty much the same food prices, which makes me feel better about retiring there.

"Living" in Anchorage or Alaska entails dealing with a lot of alcoholic reactionary misfits who scream about the federal government while sucking at its teat more than any other state in the union. The four years I spent there reminded me of Oscar Wilde's poem of his incarceration in Reading Gaol: "Every day was like a year--a year whose days were long!"
Thanks for posting and adding your experience. Can't say that it doesn't happen but in my years here, that is fairly rare occurrence and no different than my years living in Hotlanta.
@@KenHagler Hey Ken: Thank you for being so pleasant and conciliatory regarding my less-than-complimentary comments! My father was in the AF and we drove all the way across the continent from Portsmouth, NH, to Anchorage in our '61 Rambler American station wagon back in '67 after my father was transferred to Elmendorf. I spent three years there and the lack of light and the incessant icy mist that enveloped Anchorage throughout the winter months (not to mention the mosquitoes, midges, gnats, and no-see-ums) just wasn't my cup of meat! Instead of graduating from East in '71 as was my assumed destiny, I hitchhiked down the Alcan when I was 17, and kept going back and forth across the States until I turned 18 and enlisted in the army. Would you believe that when I had a chance to get a three month "early out" for a college admission, the ONLY school that started late enough for me to get out in time was UAA! So for another year I endured what I'd already come to loathe and at the end of my freshman year, I transferred to the University of Colorado at CS (where today I see there has been a shooting!) where I ended up using the GI Bill to get a completely worthless degree in Victorian Literature! My remaining family all live in Anchorage and I'd mention my father's name, but the real estate agency he owned (with backing from Ron Hayes, whom you may have heard of) specialized in bilking people of their property so I'm going to maintain radio silence on that one since he may very well be as infamous in Anchorage as my sisters would have me believe. Oh, I now live in the mountains in NC and have been to Atlanta enough times to never want to return there either!

I am going to move to Anchorage from the Caribbean for work in Feb 24 any advice for a couple re best places to live - more modern home with easy access to midtown. Maybe where other expats live with homes that rent for 3k to 4k?

I lived up there in the 70s, it was awesome, wouldn't live there now for anything. Total ghetto, full of crime and lowlifes compared to how it use to be.

Are you talking about property tax rates or monthly rent?
