The TS010 is -to this day- the most aerodynamically efficient sports prototype ever designed. Period. Better L/D ratio out of the box than even the Porsche 919 and Audi R18. It was hobbled from the start by significantly lower power than the Peugeot 905, inferior tires and minimal aero development despite being 20% better than the 905 aerodynamically. Consider this: If it had used the available Renault RS5/6 engine and the active suspension/semi-auto gearbox from the Williams FW-15C it could have easily set a sub-3:10 at Le Mans in 1993, faster than the 2017 TS050 lap record. Long live Tony Southgate!
I often wondered what it was that made the Peugeot much faster than the Toyota. Also, any idea why the Toyota abandoned the rear wheel covers for 1993?
Having lived through Group C from start to finish the 3.5L version of the sport only gives me a cold feeling, even when you can see and hear how spectacular they were. For me it was the nail in the coffin of Group C, probably as intended, as it killed the sport. At its peak we had Mercedes, Jaguar, Lancia, Ford, Aston Martin, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan and of course Porsche all running works teams at some point in time and when the 3.5L it became Peugeot, Toyota, Mercedes and Jaguar/Mazda pretty much and none of the privateers could go buy a 962 and be competitive. The best era I have seen in my 52 years, but 3.5L ruined it.
I think it's because harmonically they are inherently more complex than engines that are multiples of four. It gives v10s a character that isn't just an extrapolation of fewer cylinder, but something entirely unique.
@@myk1137 V12 engines does sounds great as well being a bit more bass-y, but the shriek of a high revving V10 engines like this TS010 and those from early 2000s F1 cars are just something else.

The car had so much downforce that a bump in the middle of that first curve off the straight broke ribs of both of Toyota’s test drivers which earned the car its nickname - “Bone Crusher”
@@unclebanga5976 That was against the actual TS010, this black one is the prototype. I always wondered why the 905 was so superior despite the Aerodynamic efficiency of the TS010, but then I got to know it had about 100hp more.
Very cool video... Not sure why they tested exactly here. Fuji would be a better spot. Not many blind corners on Circuit La Sarthe.. perhaps it was because of the first corner
If you're gonna make a story with some dialogue, you might want to turn down the car's sound to a BG level so that we can hear what you're actually saying. Not that it's a bad sound, but common!
Jets can pull higher gs but font have the bumpiness of the track to cope with. The reason why they had cracked ribs is because the car was so planted in the corner that the driver didn't need to slowdown for the turn but that bump at the turn entrance that cause the damage
Toyota has been successful in most things they've ever done. Struggling with the two most difficult things in Motorsport, F1 and Le Mans, isn't a failure. They're also the most valuable car company in the world as well. By a long way.
F1 1993 at Estoril, 5.3 gs of force as reported by Murray Walker. Probably at Spa those F1 cars pulled 5.5 or so. This car surely did similar if not more
Jesus, that first corner speed is unbelievable
5 G's
Soon after this was filmed, Andy Wallace broke 2 ribs just from driving over the bump in the middle of that corner at full speed (310kph)
My brain was like is this guy gonna send it like jimmy johnson at Watkins Glen
I was there when A1 Japan crashed, apparently fastest curve in Australia
Don’t take the Lords name in vain!
He will not let it unpunished
Car is so loud I can't hear the narrator...and I'm ok with it
I was there that day the noise of those cars was unbelievable , when they came past the grandstand the sound was insane
Steven Burke holy shit are you lucky! Sensory overload going through Turn 1 flat out!

That V10! That sound! ...THAT sound!! I think my ear's just.. climaxed.
Yep, I had an eargasm as well!!
evog35viii *OH OH OOOOOH YESSS*
Did any of y'all bring any kleenex for the ol ear lobes? 😆
Not like the trans car of today
It used to pull 4G's round that corner, and at least 2 of the drivers got rib stress fractures over the bump after 2 weeks there.
Any car that can take Turn 1 at 300km/h without lifting is incredible...

compare this to the F1 of today...I know what i'd rather go and watch!
Paul C yep t
Jesus christ that sound :O
F***ing awesome!
For 1992 footage, it actually isn't bad at all.
i cant be the only one who got the chills @3:12, right? lol
As I have said before, in many automotive related videos, 5 cylinder and V10s are the best sounding engines ever design!
Why do V10s sound better than anything else ever since the dawn of time?
I think it's because harmonically they are inherently more complex than engines that are multiples of four. It gives v10s a character that isn't just an extrapolation of fewer cylinder, but something entirely unique.

amazing through Turn 1!
The lovely and angry sound of a naturally aspirated V10.
Turni in on first corner is UNREAL
is it me or does this sound just kick the ass off modern f1 race engines? such a note!!
i was watching a video where they said this car has twice the downforce of a modern f1 car. my god that thing has some grip
Sounds incredible!! Better than F1 in 2014!
*Post-2017 cars intensify
The drivers Wallace and Ogawa both broke ribs during this testing marathon because of the force through T1
now that's a race car sound!
Geoff Lees Toyota legend with this and the TS-020 in 98/99 and still involved with them in 2015 a superb Endurance and Sportscar driver
Dude, that engine sound... :O
wow what a sound
1 word for that first corner insane!
Whoa, unbelievable quality
Thanks for sharing!
Awesome car, but 905 was exceptional.
I...I think my ears came when with that V10's engine sound oh it's amazing
Ahh my god that v10
Andy Wallace said it was the best car he ever raced.
1.09 thats freakin fast even today!
MRT Performance is that a laptime of 1min 9 seconds? I would bet it is.
“It isn’t that fast..”
“Jesus f*cking Christ..”

Glorious sound 🙌🏽

the Toyota tso010 con--- NNNNNNYYYYYAAAAAOOOOO
Wow
great video
Must have been shot on film as video then wasn't this good.
Thanks for sharing
TS actually stands for Toyota Sports. (note current TS030--Southgate had nothing to do with it...or TS020 [GT-One]) It's a nice coincidence though...
The sound is unbelievable ❤ nearly as good a the Mazda 767B 😮
That’s what I was thinking. It sounds almost like the 787b yet it’s piston powered
that, is a proper race car sound
Best sound in the world ever, forever-er
Jan Lammers at the wheel
5 valve V10, does it get better? I don't think it does.
I didn't know Robert California was involved in racing..
I've never been less upset that I can't clearly hear the narration
3:04 Is that Dave "Beaky" Sims? Can't tell with the shades on
Yes it is, used to work for Team Lotus.
Yes it is.
Nice, I wasn't expecting to see him in a Toyota testing video lol.
Dutchman Jan Lammers is a Le Mans winner 1988 behind the steering wheel at 0.20

1:57 wow
It looks like they’re taking that turn full throttle in 4-5th gear, not even easing up on the pedal. Holy smokes and this is a 1992 car?
that's because it is an F1 V10
the only car that can 1:1 with f1

Yup. Can definitely tell this is a 90's Group C car with the ridiculous V10 engine.

Final year was 93. Get your facts straight.
